As the end of the school year approaches many of us might be turning our attention towards the summer, considering the plans we may have for vacations, summer jobs, travel or maybe even, just relaxing. Besides the emphasis on a vacation or relaxing though, we might also consider that for a number of young people in our church, a new life is just beginning. This June, Chloe Chambers, Cassie Wheeler, Ry- der Brooks, Maddie Elliot and Alex Walker will all graduate from High School, and Kristi West from Dental Hygienist school. All of these students have accomplished something very important: they have acquired the knowledge and training to go from their former lives and into a new life. This new life might entail further education or a new job or even, leaving their former homes and fami- lies and embarking on a new life in an entirely new place. So as we consider and honor these graduates, it also seems timely to consider the similarities be- tween graduating from school to begin a new life and graduating from our former selves to begin new lives as people of faith. Whereas graduation from school usually happens only once or twice in our life-times, the prospect of graduating from our former selves and into the spiritual identity that God intends, might happen many times through- out the tug-of-war of life. In each of the Gospels, Jesus proclaims that “new Life” exists for those who follow Him. Jesus tells us that we can “inherit a new life”, that we can move “out of death and into new life”, that He Himself is “the Bread of Life” and the “Resurrection and the life” for those who believe. 170 E. All we have to do is say yes to God, yes to the sac- rifice that Jesus made for us and, yes to the plans that God has created for our futures – plans that are just waiting for us. And what about those plans? Well, just like the hopes that each one of our graduates may have for a better life, God also has plans for our future, in the gospel of John, Jesus says: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come so that you may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10) God wants all of us to have an abundant and purpose filled life. So, as we honor these stu- dents who are embarking on new life, may we all continue to seek the abundant life that God offers. One of my favorite scriptures regarding new life comes from the Apostle Paul where he writes in Romans: “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4) Each one of these graduating students is about to embark on a new life of their own, but for each one of us that has faith in Jesus; we are offered new life every day. THE CALLING TO SERVE AS AN ELDER

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your par-ticipation in the gospel from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Je-sus” (Philippians 1:3-6) Although these verses from Paul’s introduc-tion in his letter to the Philippians is “theologically” considered an expression of gratitude from Paul to that specific church, I have seen these very words used in rela-tionship to the training and developing of those who accept the calling to serve as Elders or Deacons in the local church. As we consider this very serious and de-manding calling, which many say yes to, let us think about the foundation that serving as an Elder or Deacon rests upon. Paul tells us that he was praying for those who are willing to participate in the gospel. This is the first aspect that we could consider: the fact that those who serve as Elders and Deacons are willing to participate, and in his letter, Paul thanks those who respond in this way. Consider the population of any church: about 80% of the people who attend do just that – they attend. There is nothing wrong with that, in fact, it is fantastic that people attend. However, the other 20% of the church is made up of those people who have responded to the call to serve in a va-riety of ways, and as Paul thanked those members of the church in Philippi, I thank all of you who serve here in Lebanon! The other issue that Paul addresses con-cerns the one main thing that holds most people back from deciding to begin serving the church – “Oh, I am not a good enough Christian” or “I don’t know enough scrip-ture” or “I have not been to Seminary or

had any other religious training”. Paul pointedly affirms those who have answered the calling to serve with these words: “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6) These verses tell us that, even though we may not have the skills or the experience, that doesn’t mean that we can’t answer the calling to serve our church! There is an old saying about this situ-ation that goes like this: “Does God call the quali-fied or does He qualify the called?” It is up to us to answer the call, and then it is up to God and the power of the Holy Spirit to mold and make us in His image so that we may become qualified to serve. All you need to do is say yes when God calls, then get out of His way and let Him begin the process of developing in you the skills that He has already placed there. By Frank Moloney
