Carson-Newman hopes to avoid a fourth consecutive loss when the Eagles pay a visit to Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Brevard is seeking its second straight split with the Eagles after taking a win at Holt Fieldhouse last February. In the teams’ first meeting last month, the Tornados got 27 points from Demarcus Threatt and 12 from Miles Leathers, but no other Brevard player scored more than five points.

Carson-Newman took control with a 31-9 run over eight first-half minutes. Brevard climbed back into contention by hitting 11 of its first 13 shots after halftime, but another big Eagles’ run sealed the win. Brevard will need a third scorer, perhaps Alex Moe or a resurgent Stevie Williams, to help Threatt and Leathers carry the load.

The Eagles are Division II’s second-most accurate shooting team and have the South Atlantic Conference’s leading scorer, Charles Clark, pacing the offense, but have struggled to a sixth-place position in the league standings after a league tournament championship a season ago. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Since 1961, there have been only 10 matchups of the top two teams in the nation. On Saturday, the 11th meeting of No. 1 and No. 2 will take place as the top two teams in the Mountain East Conference face off. Alaska-Fairbanks’ win over Western Oregon last Thursday opened the door for this matchup, as Wheeling Jesuit moved up to No. 1 for the first time in school history and West Liberty also moved up a spot to second heading into Saturday’s showdown at West Liberty. It will be the first meeting between the top two teams in the poll since top-ranked Findlay beat LIU Post in the 2009 Elite Eight quarterfinals and first in a regular season game in 17 years, when Kentucky Wesleyan beat No. 1 Southern Indiana in 1999. Lincoln Memorial, who posted an impressive road win over last week’s No. 6 Queens (N.C.), moved up a spot to third and Augustana did likewise to fourth. Fairmont State jumped two spots to fifth, giving the MEC three of the top five teams in this week’s poll. Western Oregon’s loss dropped it to sixth, while MSU Moorhead, Bellarmine and Kentucky Wesleyan all moved up to complete the top 10. The next five includes the two teams that made the biggest jump in the poll this week, beginning with No. 11 Ashland as the Eagles went up 11 spots. The biggest jump came with No. 14 Midwestern State, who made an eight-spot advance this week to come in after No. 12 Queens (N.C.) and No. 13 Chico State. Saginaw Valley State is 16th this week, followed by West Chester, Wisconsin-Parkside, UC San Diego and Eckerd. The final five teams in this week’s poll are Saint Anselm, Angelo State, Barry, California Baptist and Cal Poly Pomona. Saint Anselm and Cal Baptist both returned to the top 25 this week. This is also the week where conference tournaments are getting underway around the NCAA Division II ranks, beginning Feb. 23 with the CIAA Tournament. The NCAA will release its second set regional rankings on Wednesday, Feb. 24. Among this week’s top games: #21 Saint Anselm at So. New Hampshire, Tuesday #17 West Chester at Kutztown, Wednesday #20 Eckerd at #23 Barry, Saturday #14 Midwestern State at Cameron, Saturday #1 Wheeling Jesuit at #2 West Liberty, Saturday

REGIONAL UPDATE

The Eagles were picked to finish second • in the preseason rankings after upset-ting Lincoln Memorial to win the 2015 SAC Championship but are currently sixth in the league standings.Carson-Newman has a knack for late-• game heroics. Zac Pangallo’s buzzer-beating three completed a 21-point comeback at Newberry on Jan. 24. The Eagles eventually lost to Tusculum last Wednesday, but forced overtime when Carson Brooks made a free throw and missed the second with two seconds left. Josh Rogers grabbed the rebound and fed Charles Clark in the corner for a fadeaway three as time expired.

ABOUT CARSON-NEWMAN

ABOUT BREVARD

DID YOU KNOW?

Jefferson City was originally known as Mossy Creek from its origins in 1788 until the consolidation of three towns into one in 1901. Mossy Creek, the body of water for which the area was named, was mostly inundated by Cherokee Lake in 1941. Former football coach “Frosty” Holt was credited with saying, “You know, it gets foggy on Mossy Creek,” a saying that was the inspiration for a book title chronicling the history of Carson-Newman athletics and the Eagles’ “foggy grey” football uniforms.

With his next made free throw, • Omar El Diraroui will meet the minimum for inclusion in Brevard’s NCAA record book. His current 80.6-percent mark at the line would rank fourth in a single season.Demarcus Threatt• and Miles Leathers lead the SAC in total minutes.Leathers• is ranked second in the league in defensive rebounding and fourth in overall reboundingThreatt• ’s 194 field goals made are sec-ond in the SAC and 34th in Division II.Leathers• is 22nd among active Division II players with 162 career steals.Since Jan. 25, Brevard has raised its • field goal percentage from eighth to fifth in the SAC and is now third in the NCAA era (45.7 percent).

BREVARD’S LAST GAME C-N’S LAST GAME THE LAST MEETINGCATAWBA 85, BREVARD 74February 20, 2016 SALISBURY, N.C. – Brevard was unable to pick up a victory in its final road contest of the year despite the fourth 30-point effort of the season from Demarcus Threatt. The junior guard played all 40 minutes in the 85-74 Catawba (11-15, 9-11 SAC) victory, connecting on a season-best 10 of 12 free throw attempts and nine of his 19 shots from the field to lead all scorers. He also notched a career-high seven rebounds to lead the Tor-nados. Threatt’s supporting cast struggled on Saturday af-ternoon, however, with Omar El Diraoui the only other double-digit scorer. El Diraoui continued a recent resur-gence, scoring at least nine points for the fourth time in the last six contests and contributing five rebounds to tie for second on the team. The Tornados (5-21, 4-16 SAC) fell behind early as Catawba scored the game’s first eight points, but the Indians were unable to maintain their advantage for long. Brevard tied the game on a Threatt triple eight minutes in and took the lead on its next possession. The Tornados reached their largest lead at the 8:46 mark of the half, building a six-point advantage on an El Diraoui jumper that capped a 20-6 run. Catawba chipped away at the lead until the hosts regained an advantage they would not relinquish five minutes later. Past the midway point of the second half, Catawba’s lead only dipped below 10 points on two oc-casions, including when Evan Dunham knocked down a 15-foot jumper to draw the Tornados within five points inside the final minute. The Tornados would get no closer, however, as the Indians made all six of their free throws down the stretch to reach their 11-point margin. Catawba was paced by 27 points from Jameel Tay-lor and 16 off the bench from Rakeen Brown. Julian Sampah notched 14 points and a game-high 11 re-bounds. While Brevard improved its accuracy from the field by 17 percentage points to 46.7 percent in the sec-ond half, the Indians were 56.0 percent (14-for-25) from the field over the final 20 minutes to reach 48.1 percent for the game. Catawba outpaced Brevard 32-24 in the paint and led 29-19 in bench points, with Brown and El Diraoui providing the majority of the bench support. Threatt and Moe each tallied three assists for Brevard, while Threatt led all players with three steals.

WINGATE 81, CARSON-NEWMAN 60February 13, 2016 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (14-12, 10-10 South Atlantic Conference) struggled to make shots while Wingate (19-7, 15-5 SAC) knocked down 11 threes to spoil Carson-Newman’s senior day 81-60 Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The teams swapped leads six times and were tied six times in the game’s first 16 minutes. However, Wingate closed the first half on a 13-3 run before opening the second half on an 11-2 spurt from which Carson-Newman would not recover. “I was pretty pleased with our first 16 minutes of play, but we had some players who turned the ball over late that created quick dunk opportunities for them,” head coach Chuck Benson said. “They had such an unbelievable burst of momentum going into the half that it really carried into the second half. It’s frustrating to be so incapable of taking care of the basketball at this point in the season. Guys have to step up and make the play, and we’re not doing that at this point in the season.” The Eagles were held 37.9 percent shooting, the third game below 40 percent this season for one of the nation’s most efficient offenses. Meanwhile, Wingate, a team aver-aging 44 percent from the field on the season, drilled 50.8 percent of its shots and 11-of-29 threes. The 11 made threes mark the fourth time this season Wingate has hit 10 or more triples. Of Carson-Newman’s last nine opponents, eight have nailed at least 10 threes. The Bulldogs percentages would have been higher, but Wingate went the final 3:34 of the game without scoring. “They are tough and physical defensively,” Benson said. “They have a toughness we don’t possess. We didn’t have the poise in this game today to handle when we think we’re being fouled and the whistle’s not blown. You saw our guys get frustrated when they thought there should have been a whistle. We didn’t handle poise in that regard because how we respond to that is something we can control. We suc-cumbed to that tonight.” Carson-Newman had a trio of players score 11 points in Carson Brooks (Knoxville, Tenn.), Mason Bates (Cookeville, Tenn.) and Sawyer Williams (Owenton, Ky.). Williams, normally efficient on the low blocks, was held to 4-of-13 shooting. He averaged 62 percent from the field coming in. Charles Clark (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) narrowly hit double-digits for a 31st consecutive game. He had 10, also on 4-of-13 shooting. Mike Baez led Wingate with 22 points. The freshman was averaging 31 percent shooting from three coming into the contest, but went off, burying 6-of-8 threes and 8-of-10 field goals. Isiah Cureton added 16 points, with 14 coming after halftime. Kerigan Farley and Keith Griffin each had 10. Carson-Newman coughed it up 14 times, 12 of which were live-ball Wingate steals. The Bulldogs converted 10 of those steal into points to finish with 20 points off turnover to 11 for the Eagles. “We have to continue with the processes that have been in place that have won us a bunch of games,” Benson said. “We’ll give our guys the scout and prepare and it’ll be upon them to execute. We all have a role in this thing. No one’s role is any greater than the others. Coaches have to coaches, players have to play, managers have to manage, radio guys have to do radio. If everyone doesn’t do their job, then we’ve got a problem. We need to have a stronger, de-termined effort to do their job that it leads to a performance worthy of a win.”

CARSON-NEWMAN 87, BREVARD 60January 6, 2016 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Brevard appeared to be every bit defending SAC Championship winner Carson-Newman’s equal through the first eight minutes of Wednesday night’s game at Holt Fieldhouse. Then the Eagles’ offense heated up. Carson-Newman’s 31-9 run spanning over eight minutes of the first half proved to be the difference in the Eagles’ 87-60 victory in South Atlantic Conference action. The win was not without its tense moments, howev-er. Brevard (2-12, 1-7 SAC) carried the momentum from Evan Dunham’s buzzer-beating layup into the second half, opening the frame by shooting an astounding 84.6 percent (11-for-13) from the field in the first 12 minutes. The Tornados closed the gap to as few as 12 points be-fore Carson-Newman (8-7, 4-5 SAC) slammed the door with a 20-5 run over the final 7:32. Demarcus Threatt led all scorers with 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting, including a career-best four three-point field goals. The junior guard outdueled the Eagles’ Charles Clark, who led Threatt by 0.4 points per game for second in the conference in scoring coming into the contest but managed just 12 points on the evening. Miles Leathers scored 12 points and was the only other Tornado in double figures. The senior forward needs 11 rebounds to become the only Brevard player to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, and 100 steals in a career. Omar El Diraoui paced the Tor-nados in rebounding for the second time this season, pulling down seven boards to finish one shy of matching his career high. Brevard was unable to take advantage of Carson-Newman’s tendency to turn the ball over, forcing the second-fewest turnovers of any Eagles’ opponent this season. The Tornados were outpaced 22-11 in points off turnovers and saw Carson-Newman build a 29-9 ad-vantage in bench points. The Eagles shot 55.9 percent (19-for-34) in the first half on their way to claiming a 47-27 halftime advan-tage, knocking down eight triples and dishing out 16 of their 25 assists in the first 20 minutes. Carson-Neew-man shot 57.6 percent for the game and made 12 of 43 shots from beyond the arc. Brevard’s second-half comeback attempt gathered steam into the middle stages of the half as the Torna-dos’ run ballooned to 10-2, but a pair of missed free throws was followed by a Zack Pangallo layup to stretch the Eagles’ lead back to 14 with 7:32 to play. After Bre-vard misfired on just its third field goal of the half, Pan-gallo extended the lead again with a triple to snuff out the Brevard run. The Eagles had four players finish in double figures led by 16 points from forward Sawyer Williams. The ju-nior finished 7-for-10 from the field, raising his career 61.0-percent shooting clip that ranked sixth among ac-tive Division II players entering the game.
