Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: In our modern world there are so many forces against God’s Plan for Marriage. Below you will find a recent talk Our Holy Father Pope Francis gave on the Sacrament of Marriage. I hope you find it informative and helpful. Have a Blessed week. Fr. Harrigan Pastor Pope urges US Catholics to ‘bear witness’ to natural marriage amid attacks PHILADELPHIA, PA, August 5, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) -- Pope Francis is urging American Catholics facing an unprecedented cultural and political assault on marriage to continue to “bear witness” to marriage as a “life-long covenant of love and fidelity between a man and a woman.” “Elevated by the Savior to the dignity of a sacrament, marriage is, in the Creator’s plan, a natural institution, a life-long covenant of love and fidelity between a man and a woman, directed to their perfection and sanctification, and to the future of our human family,” said the pope. “Today, when the institution of marriage is under attack from powerful cultural forces, the faithful are called to bear witness to this basic truth of biblical faith and natural law, which is essential to the wise and just ordering of society,” he communicated in a letter to the Knights of Columbus on the occasion of their 133rd Supreme Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The message was addressed to the Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and was signed on the pope’s behalf by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. "Today, when the institution of marriage is under attack from powerful cultural forces, the faithful are called to bear witness to this basic truth of biblical faith and natural law." The Holy Father expressed his “deep appreciation” to the Knights for their “steadfast public witness which your Order has borne to our Christian understanding of marriage and the family.” Quoting the Book of Revelations about keeping the “commandments of God” and holding fast to “faith in Jesus,” the pope urged American faithful to meet the “moral, social and political challenges of the present hour” with “great wisdom and perseverance.” Commenting on the theme of this year’s Supreme Convention — “Endowed by their Creator with Life and Liberty” — Pope Francis stated that American Catholics have a “duty” to “contribute to the reasoned defense of those freedoms on which their nation was founded.” “The cornerstone of these is religious freedom, understood not simply as the liberty to worship as one chooses, but also, for individuals and institutions, to speak and act in accordance with the dictates of their conscience,” he communicated. The message is timely with the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision rewriting the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples, a move that is widely anticipated to have ruinous consequences for religious freedom. The pope called for mobilization of the faithful. “To the extent that this [religious freedom] right is menaced, whether by invasive public policies, or by the growing influence of a culture which sets alleged personal rights above the common good, there is need for a mobilization of consciences on the part of all those citizens who, regardless of party or creed, are concerned for the overall welfare of society,” he said.

Did You Know?/¿Sabia Usted? Help children communicate by reading between the lines: When children express that something is wrong at school or with other activities, it's often the job of caregivers to read between the lines to determine what's really going on. They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance finding a better school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you understand what is going on. If the child is still being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communication with kids will enable you to be their advocate. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Communication Tip No. 15: When Children Complain about School,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Perpetual Adoration Welcome to the year 2017!

Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions in mind? Would you like to enrich your heart and soul with an hour devoted to our Blessed Lord in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel? It is a rich and refreshing experience of deep prayer and spiritual guidance. “ May my soul thirst for you, who are the source of all life, wisdom & knowledge.” (St. Bonaventure) “Communicating with Christ”, the Pope explains, “demands that we gaze on Him, allow Him to gaze on us, listen to Him, get to know Him.” The hours for consideration at this time are: Thursday Morning 9-10 a.m. Thursday Morning 10-11 a.m. (Or you can take both hours, if you like!) Thank you for your consideration. I can be reached at (310) 548-1693. Barbara West/ Coordinator

Sacrament. Within the hour, there are readings from Sacred Scripture and the saints, time for silent reflection, and the Chaplet

of Divine Mercy. The Holy Hour concludes with Benediction. Please come and spend one hour with Jesus. This is

a special time of abundant blessings for all!

Divine Mercy Chaplet

Please join us every third Tuesday of each month in praying the Divine Mercy chaplet after the 5:15 p.m. Mass with veneration of the first-class relic of St. Faustina following the chaplet. This is a very powerful prayer as in the words of our Lord:

"Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy

at the hour of death"

FFFAITHAITHAITH FFFORMATIONORMATIONORMATION

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time This is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We too can recognize Jesus when, like John the Baptist, we actively watch for his coming and remain faithful to the mission God has given us. We are called to be more than

servants, called to be the body of Christ shining with God’s love to the ends of the earth. We can do that by living our ordinary day aware that we are in God’s presence.

When we enter the church and bless ourselves with Holy Water from the font with the sign of the Cross, we can visualize ourselves standing next to Jesus who reminds us that we, too, have been baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Adult Sacraments Classes began on Tuesday, January 10 and will continue until Tuesday, April 4th, Classes are held in Room 111 in the Religious Education Building from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20th at 11:00 am by Bishop Joseph Sartoris. Recycling: We continue to do our little bit to save the earth by recycling and teaching the children the importance of doing so.

If you need further information on any of the above programs please call Sister Mary or Lorena at

(310) 833-3541 Ext. 222, 221.

Our students have been back to school for two weeks and working to fulfill their new year’s goals. Science Fair is just around the corner and all classes are preparing to expand on the State Standards for their grade level by designing an experiment and using Scientific method.

Each year academics and faith are enriched by field trips outside of the school: • 6th and 7th grade traveled to St. Michaels Abbey for an all-

day retreat with Father Benedict and the seminarians. • 1st and 2nd grade took a bus to Pasadena to visit the

Kidspace Museum. Students were given the opportunity to learn by touching and exploring.

• All students in grades Kindergarten to 8th grade walked to the Warner Grand Theater on Thursday January 12th. We saw the musical Beauty and the Beast.

• 4th grade is planning to visit the San Gabriel Mission in February to expand on their study of California history.
