Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: I wish you all a Blessed Easter Octave and Divine Mercy Sunday. One of God’s Greatest Attributes is His Mercy. Today we as the Universal Church celebrate that very Ocean of His Mercy. Below is some history and facts about the Message of Divine Mercy. I hope you enjoy it. Have a Blessed Week and hope to see you today at the special 3:00pm Divine Mercy Holy Hour. Fr. Harrigan Pastor St. Pope John Paul II The Great Pope of Mercy Pope John Paul II, both in his teaching and personal life, strove to live and teach the message of Divine Mercy. As the great Mercy Pope, he wrote an encyclical on Divine Mercy: "The Message of Divine Mercy has always been near and dear to me… which I took with me to the See of Peter and which it in a sense forms the image of this Pontificate." In his writings and homilies, he has described Divine Mercy as the answer to the world’s problems and the message of the third millennium. He beatified and canonized Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska, the nun associated with the message, and he did it in Rome and not in Poland to underscore that Divine Mercy is for the whole world. Establishing Divine Mercy Sunday for the Entire Church When Pope John Paul canonized Sr. Faustina (making her St. Faustina), he also, on the same day, surprised the entire world by establishing Divine Mercy Sunday (the feast day associated with the message) as a feast day for the entire Church. The feast day falls on the Second Sunday of the Easter season. On that day, Pope John Paul II declared, "This is the happiest day of my life." Entrusting the World to Divine Mercy In 2002, the Pope entrusted the whole world to Divine Mercy when he consecrated the International Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Lagiewniki, a suburb of Krakow in Poland. This is where St. Faustina’s mortal remains are entombed. The saint lived in a convent nearby. The Pope himself remembers as a young man working in the Solvay Quarry, just a few meters from the present-day Shrine. He also says that he had been thinking about Sr. Faustina for a long time when he wrote his encyclical on Divine Mercy. Further, the Holy Father has frequently quoted from the Diary of St. Faustina and has prayed The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy at the saint’s tomb. Beyond the Life of John Paul II Given all these connections to Divine Mercy and St. Faustina, is it any wonder that Pope John Paul II died on the Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday (the evening before the feast day), which fell that year on April 3. It is also no surprise that the Great Mercy Pope left us a message for Divine Mercy Sunday, which was read on the feast day by a Vatican official to the faithful in St. Peter’s after a Mass that had been celebrated for the repose of the soul of the Pope. Repeatedly Pope John Paul II has written and spoken about the need for us to turn to the mercy of God as the answer to the specific problems of our times. He has placed a strong and significant focus on the Divine Mercy message and devotion throughout his pontificate that will carry the Church long after his death.

FEAST OF THE MADONNA DELL’ARCO

On Saturday, April 21, 2018 the Italian Catholic Federation is celebrating the Feast of the Madonna dell’Arco at the 5:15 P.M. mass. The Italian Community

has long been devoted to the Madonna dell’Arco. The name of the Madonna dell’Arco originates from an area where there were aqueducts with supporting columns and arches (arco) built during the Roman Empire. On one of these columns a devoted artist painted the image of the Blessed Virgin and Child. Many centuries later, youths were playing bocce ball near this column. After a clumsy throw, the ball of one of the players hit a tree that shaded the sacred shrine. The youth, blinded by anger, retrieved the ball and threw it against the image of Our Lady, hitting her on the right cheek. To the shock of all those present, the cheek was seen bleeding, as if it were of real flesh. Centuries later this original image was cut away from the column and placed in the Church Sanctuary in Naples, Italy. Many miracles were recorded since then and in March 1675 for about a month, the image of Our Lady was seen surrounded by stars, while the right cheek appeared red with blood. A mosaic of the Madonna dell’Arco was donated to Mary Star by Mr. Joseph Scotti and dedicated on April 17, 2016. It was placed in the Shrine of Saint John Joseph of the Cross. Please join us to celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Arch. A procession will start from the back of the church with the portrait of the Madonna along with Mary Star societies and their banners. All are welcome to bring flowers from the garden and place them in front of the Madonna dell’Arco.

TODAY DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

APRIL 8th

3:00 pm: In the church, there will be exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet in song. This will be followed by Benediction, and individual veneration of a first class relic of St. Faustina. The celebration will conclude with a reception in the parish center. Our Lord asked St. Faustina to pray and work towards establishing a feast of the Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter. He told her: “On this day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon souls who approach the fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (Diary of St. Faustina 699) John Paul II proclaimed Mercy Sunday an official feast of the church in April of 2000 when he canonized St. Maria Faustina. There will be free Divine Mercy Literature in English and Spanish available on the patio after all the morning masses.

FFFAITHAITHAITH FFFORMATIONORMATIONORMATION

Christ is Risen! Alleluia!

The disciples are gathered in fear behind locked doors. Jesus appears and fills them

with JOY. He gives them his own Spirit to continue his saving work. Thomas isn’t present. The disciples tell Thomas they have seen the Lord. For Thomas something doesn’t ring true. If they have seen the Lord why are they still locked up tight in that room? If they are filled with such JOY, why couldn’t he read it on their faces? If they have been empowered by the Spirit of God to “complete Christ’s work on earth” what are they waiting for?

Thomas didn’t doubt the Lord; he doubted the word of his friends! He couldn’t read the presence of the Risen One on their faces. When the Risen One turns up a week later, Thomas is filled with faith. “My Lord and my God,” he confesses.

What about us? Are we full of the JOY of the Risen Lord? Are we witnesses of this JOY in the ordinary events of our life?
