THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

GO FALCONS! St. Juliana Catholic Grammar school begins on Monday, August 21. On the day of a Solar Eclipse! GO FALCONS! As I am writing we are expecting the student enrollment to be 305 eager boys and girls from T-K (Transitional Kindergarten) to Eighth grade. Pray for our administration, teaching faculty, support staff, room parents, and all other supporters – pray in gratitude for them. I appreciate that our parish has a Catholic grammar school and that our Catholic grammar school has a parish. Frankly, it’s b-o-r-n-i-n-g without you all on our campus. Welcome back. GO FALCONS!

For the vast majority of Catholics, the experience of what it means to be “church” happens right here on the parish campus. It is here that we are converted ever more deeply to Christ our Savior as together we celebrate the sacraments, serve the otherwise underserved in our community, and are taught the Truths of our faith in various experiences of prayer and faith formation. Each one is a

chance to encounter Jesus and his community of believers.

Catholic education, whether in the parish grammar school or through the School of Religious Education and the Confirmation preparation program, is essential to the passing on of our faith. Faith formation compliments what is begun in the family with parents, “the first teachers in the ways of the faith.”

Faith formation begins with the family. Our programs and our formal schooling cannot take the place of the family. In the family the importance and the structure of faith is first introduced and nourished.

The challenge then is that we all work together – parish and school – family and parish – parish school and School of Religious Education – as one community in the purpose of religious conversion, the transformation of minds, souls, and way of life toward God. Through religious conversion a lasting relationship with the Lord and one another is formed. What secular society seeks to destroy, our faith community, dedicated to Jesus and Mary, strong in the Holy Eucharist, and knowledge of the Tradition of our Christian Faith will stand firm.

St. Juliana, our patroness, was a woman of religious community. She founded the Servite Sisters. She gathered them together with the Holy Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary as their center. She was a woman of prayer. She was a learned disciple of Jesus, she understood the faith and practiced what she understood.

St. Juliana, our patroness, was dedicated to Mary, the first disciple of Jesus. Our model and guide remained open to the surprises that God has in store for us every day. He alone invites us to transformation and renewal. As did Mary, Juliana said “Yes” to what God asked of her.

St. Juliana, our patroness, was dedicated to the Holy Eucharist. The True Presence, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is real food for our daily life, food for our journey to heaven, nourishment as we live. The Holy Eucharist gathers us, renews us, and sends us forward as we make his presence known in schools, playgrounds, work places, neighborhoods, market places, and homes. Be present to the Holy Eucharist at Mass, even at daily Mass and our First Tuesday of Solemn Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Stop in the church to make a prayerful visit. Then be present to all people as the Lord is present to you. Before the Lord ALL are welcome.

St. Juliana, our patroness, is an example of one who is a student in the faith. She sought to understand what she said she believed and practiced. Beginning again today, as a community of faith-filled disciples of Jesus, let us learn and practice our faith with reason.

Beginning again today, take time to pray. Pray as individuals, pray as a family, pray in our church, pray before meals, and pray with and for those who ask for prayers. Beginning today, intentionally be disciples of Jesus.

St. Juliana Falconieri Parish is the community of Christ where, as Mary learned, “all things are possible for those who believe.”

School doesn’t begin just for our children. Learning and living the faith continues for all of us! GO FALCONS!

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

Faith Direct enables parishioners to make your Church contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or through your credit/debit card. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door. Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition payments.

Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection basket. Please join in enrolling by responding to the mailing you will receive at the end of the month or visit www.faithdirect.net to enroll securely online.
