Vice Principal’s Message

Happy Fall! Hot Lunch is almost at the end of its second week and the students seem very happy with the food choices. I would like to say thank you to Julianna Tapia and Rebecca Raskopf and all the workers who help with hot lunch. It takes so many “behind-the-scenes” hours to make the program run successfully. The hot lunch program helps fund Astrocamp for our sixth graders and Washington, D.C. for our eighth graders. Progress Reports will be going home via backpack mail on Thursday, October 6. STAR Testing results for reading and math will be sent home at that time, as well. Trunk or Treat and the Junior High Youth Ministry Halloween Dance are scheduled for Friday, October 28. There will be a Taco Cart on site where you can purchase food and drinks. Proceeds will benefit the 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Hanna who have volunteered to take the lead on Trunk or Treat. The children have such a wonderful time at this event. The school Halloween parade and parties will still be held on Monday, October 31. The monthly theme for October will focus on being courageous. This theme coincides with October being anti-bullying month. Students of the Month for September will be awarded on Monday, October 3. The theme for September was faithfulness Problem of the Month: A single subject homework pass will be given to the first ten students to answer the following question. Lisa purchased 2½ pounds of pastrami deli meat. If the meat sells for $7.98/pound, what is the total amount she paid? Happy Calculating! Mrs. Janet Donnelly

Spiritual Corner – Mrs. Martinez Dear Parents of our beautiful children, Welcome Back and welcome all new families. This 2016/2017 school year is going to be fabulous! Thank you for taking a leap of faith and joining this wonderful community. I have been with St. Juliana Parish since I was seven years old when there was no TK and no Kinder. We are definitely growing! My friend, Gina Glaudini was kind enough to send me this amazing prayer that you can bring the next time you go to Adoration. (Just take it out of the newsletter once you are done reading.) Adoration is the first Tuesday of the month and goes for 24 hours. Adoration is my favorite thing to do because this is my chance to listen to God. He doesn't care if you go for 5 minutes or 2 hours. What I can tell you from my humble experience is that when you give God the time…He will give you the gift of grace. Think of it as a meditation. You don't have to do anything but sit or kneel. Just open your mind and heart to listen. Blessings, Colleen Martinez (Mother of Elizabeth, Kathleen and Ben and wife to Erick.) (Prayer on next page)

Meditation: Come Visit Me In the Blessed Sacrament: Won’t You, Please?

MY CHILD, you need not know much in order to please Me: only love Me dearly. Speak to Me as you would talk to your mother, if she had taken you in her arms. Have you no one to recommend to Me? Tell Me the names of your relations, of your friends: after each name add what you wish Me to do for them. Ask a great deal: I love generous hearts that forget themselves for others.

TELL Me about the poor whom you want to help, the sick whom you have seen suffer, the sinner whom you would convert, the persons who are alienated from you, and whose affections you wish to win back. For all recite a fervent prayer. Remind Me that I have promised to grant every prayer that comes from the heart; and surely the prayers are heartfelt which we say for those whom we love, and who love us.

HAVE you no favors to ask for yourself? Write, if you like, a long list of all your wishes - all the needs of your soul - and come and read it to Me. Tell Me simply how self-indulgent you are, how proud, how touchy. how selfish, how cowardly, how idle; ask Me to help you to improve. Poor child! Do not blush! There are in heaven many saints who had the same faults as you; they prayed to Me, and, little by little, they were cured.

DO not hesitate to ask for the goods of body and mind - for health, for memory, for success. I can give everything, and I always give when the gifts would make souls more holy. What do you want today, My child? Oh, if you knew how I long to do you good!

HAVE you no plans to interest you? Tell me about them. Do they concern your vocation? What do you think of? What would you like? Are you planning some pleasure for your mother for your family, for your guardian? What do you wish to do for them?

AND have you no thoughts of zeal for Me? Are you not anxious to do a little good for the souls of your friends, for those whom you love, and who, perhaps, forget Me? Tell Me who interests you, what motives urge you, what means you wish to take.

CONFIDE to Me your failures. I will show you the cause. Whom do you wish to see interested in your work? I am the master of all hearts, My child, and I lead them gently where I please. I will place about you those who are necessary to you; never fear!

HAVE you nothing to annoy you, My child, tell Me your annoyances with every detail. Who has pained you? Who has wounded your self-love? Who has treated you contemptuously? Tell Me all, and then say that you forgive and forget; and I will give you My blessing.

DO you dread something painful? Is there in your soul a vague fear which seems unreasonable, and yet torments you? Trust fully in My providence. I am here, I see everything; I will not leave you.

ARE there about you friends who seem less kind than formerly, who neglect you through indifference or forgetfulness without your having consciously done anything to wound them? Pray for them, and I will restore them to you, if their companionship is good for you.

HAVE you no joys to tell Me? Why not confide to Me your pleasures? Tell Me what has happened since yesterday to console you, to make you look happy, to give you joy. An unexpected visit has done you good: a fear has been suddenly dispelled: you have met with unlooked-for success; you have received some mark of affection - a letter, a present; some trial has left you stronger than you supposed. All these things, My child, I obtained for you. Why are you not grateful? Why do you not say 'I thank you'? Gratitude draws benefits, and the benefactor loves to be reminded of his bounty.

HAVE you no promises to make Me? You know I read the very bottom of your heart. Men are deceived, but not God: be frank.

ARE you resolved to avoid that occasion of sin, to give up the object which leads you astray - not to read the book which excites your imagination, to withdraw your friendship from that person who is irreligious, and whose presence disturbs the peace of your soul? Will you go at once and be kind to that companion who annoyed you?

WELL, My child, go now and resume your daily work. Be silent, be honest, be patient, be charitable: and tomorrow bring Me a heart even more devoted and loving. Tomorrow I shall have new favors for you.

Teacher News – Transitional Kindergarten Miss Christina & Miss KJ

Kindergarten has hit the ground running! We are learning a letter and sound everyday. We had an apple week where we learned about Johnny Appleseed and did lots of activities and science with apples. We also had a Teddy Bear week where we spent time with our favorite Teddy Bear, measured them in math, did science with Gummy Bears, and so much more! We look forward to a year packed with learning, praying, field trips, weekly STEAM Science activities, class parties, friendships, and so much more! We’d like to give a VERY Special “THANK YOU” to former St. Juliana Graduate, Peter Demman, for doing his Eagle Scout Project for US! He made us two AH-Mazing Garden Boxes, plants & seeds to plant, and garden tools. We LOVE it!!

Teacher News – Kindergarten Mrs. Tapia & Mrs. Anderson

Welcome Fall! We’ve had a very energetic start to our year in TK! So far, our class

has celebrated 6 birthdays! We’ve also learned all our classroom rules and the hand motions that go with them.

In TK, we have started learning one letter of the alphabet each week and are already on the letter “Ee”. The kiddos are so excited to share items from home that begin with the letter of the week! They also thoroughly enjoy Share Time on Fridays!

In the past couple weeks, we have begun attending P.E., Library, Computer, and even experienced our first visit from the Environmental Nature Center! We look forward to our monthly visits from Miss Valerie with the ENC and all the cute pets she brings with her. Our TK students have transitioned smoothly in our classroom routine and enjoy singing and dancing daily. Super shout-out to our TK helpers at morning carpool and lunch time! We appreciate all the help we can get! God Bless, Miss Christina & Miss KJ

Learning Support Mrs. Molina, Miss Donnelly, and Mrs. Cooper

Dear Parents, Welcome back to St. Juliana School. Mrs. Heather Molina, Miss Elyse Donnelly, and Mrs. Therese Cooper are very excited to be working together with the faculty and staff to serve and assist your families. The Learning Support Team is here to help students, advocate on your behalf, and bring awareness to issues that may have an impact on classroom activities and learning. Please be reassured that all of our work is confidential. Each learning specialist provides an area of service and experience. Mrs. Molina provides curriculum modification for processing difficulties, which can affect handwriting, attention, and organization. . She supports an accelerated reading program to primary grades. Mrs. Molina and Miss Elyse work together with girls from Rosary so we can offer tutoring twice a week to students 3-8. Mrs. Molina works in conjunction with Miss Elyse and Mrs. Cooper to develop documentation of Individual Learning Plans (ILP) and necessary classroom accommodations. Miss Elyse provides evaluation and support to students in the area of learning assessments, social development, and behavioral modification, and individual classroom support. She provides classroom lessons on social, emotional, and behavioral issues that may impact the dynamics of the classroom, and facilitates the after school-tutoring program with Mrs. Molina. She works as a liaison to provide support material and information to faculty and parents. Mrs. Cooper is a licensed and certified Speech/Language Pathologist. She is available to evaluate and provide therapy for a wide range of skills including speech articulation, language development, comprehension and following directions, memory, reasoning and problem solving and social skills. She is currently supervising undergraduate Human Communication Disorder students from CSU Fullerton, who are able to volunteer their time to expand the Speech and Language Department at St. Juliana. Services are provided in 1:1 and group sessions for qualified students and well as classroom lessons to promote learning and social skills for all students. Part of the mission statement at St. Juliana School affirms the notion that each student can achieve his/her ultimate potential. The great philosopher Johann Goethe wrote “We should treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and in doing so you help them become what they are capable of becoming”. Each student is capable of achieving his/her greatest potential. The Learning Support Team looks forward to a successful 2016-2017 school year, working, advocating, and supporting your children. Blessings, Mrs. Heather Molina, Miss Elyse Donnelly, and Mrs. Therese Cooper

Reminder Student Illness Guidelines

We ask that you follow these guidelines as you evaluate whether or not to send your child to school when he/she has a health issue. Our goal, as always, is to provide the safest possible environment for student learning. 1. Parents should notify the school office of any health problems concerning their child. If the child has a contagious condition such as chicken pox, strep throat, etc., we will notify the parents of his/her homeroom classmates. 2. If your child has a fever they may not attend school. Students must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school without the use of fever reducing medications. 3. Students who are sent home during the school day with a fever will not be allowed to return to school the next day; this will allow for the 24-hour protection of the entire school community. 4. Please do not send your child if they have had two or more episodes of either vomiting and/or diarrhea in the last 24 hours . A child will be sent home if they vomit at school. 5. If your child develops a body rash or skin lesions, a doctor should diagnose the problem. Please inform the school of the doctor's recommendations. There may be times when a note from the doctor is required. 6. If your child has strep throat, scarlet fever, conjunctivitis, pinworms, ringworm or impetigo, the child needs to be on prescription medicine from your doctor for 24 hours before returning to school. 7. If your child has head lice, the child may not return to school until appropriate treatment has been obtained and all the nits (eggs) are removed. If nits are visible in the hair, the child will be sent home. Manual removal of all lice and nits is often the best option to assure total lice treatment of the hair. 8. If your child has to stay home from school for any medical reason, please notify the school office by 8:00 a.m.
