The vision of St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Community
is to live as a people of God with Christ at the center of our
lives through liturgy, faith formation
and community.
Our mission is to be a welcoming family dedicated to
proclaiming the gospel, celebrating the Sacraments,
educating, serving, and providing opportunity for all to enrich their faith.
THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

~ A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M. ~ Marriage Class, continued, lesson III. Preparing for the Nuptial Mass.
Joseph and Mary are dong other preparations, so let’s drop in on Aldo and Lena who have completed the Engaged Encounter Weekend, a few meetings with Fr. Gaetano (henceforth Fr. Guy), and are just a few weeks away from “the ceremony.” Aldo and Lena are both Roman Catholics. Although Aldo did not receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, he has practiced the faith “regularly – more-or-less.” Lena attends Sunday Mass often; she does not miss without a good excuse. She wants a full Mass ceremony. Of course Aldo says “Yes, dear.” They are given the book Together For Life which gives them the guide to plan their Nuptial Mass according the Roman Catholic Rite of Marriage. The ritual gives them some options for prayers and readings. They are free to choose within the limits of the Church.
The Mass begins as Mass usually begins, with a procession. Grandparents, parents, cross, candles, priest, and women of honor. There was some discussion whether or not the bride’s maids and groom’s men should process into the church together. Lena won! Aldo said: “Yes, dear!” the men will stand near the sanctuary of the church with the groom. The men will join the women from there. Finally, Mr. Gentile
walks his daughter the bride to the sanctuary. The bride is beaming a smile, dad is weeping. (Weeping partly because his “baby doll” daughter is being married and partly because he is considering the cost of the day. The brides’ siblings might be weeping as they realize inheritance is being spent on this wedding day.) Finally groom and bride meet. Mr. Gentile kisses his daughter and weeps some more. He shakes Aldo’s hand. He unites the hands of Aldo and Lena and side steps into the pew row next to his wife, Elena. Fr. Guy greets the whole congregation welcoming everyone into the church, he declares it to be a most wonderful day outside and in the life of the whole Church, and finally he prays the opening prayer (the collect) of the Mass. The New Rite beginning in September will have Nuptial Mass beginning with the Gloria. There are two Scripture readings, one from the Old Testament writings, the second from the New Testament letters. The responsorial psalm, usually sung, is between them. Friends or relatives read these from the ambo. Then the Gospel is proclaimed. It is followed by a homily instruction on marriage. The Rite of Marriage follows; the vows, the rings are blessed and given, this part of the rite is concluded with the Prayer of the Faithful. Mass will continue as usual until just after the Our Father when Fr. Guy prays the Nuptial Blessing Prayer over Aldo and Lena. Holy Communion will be received. Most often the couple will visit the church’s image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and ask her blessing on their marriage while the “Ave Maria” is sung. The final blessing of the Mass is prayed over the couple and congregation. They kiss, they are introduced, and they recess out of the church and onto happily ever-after.
That is the way it is intended to happen!
From time-to-time Fr. Guy is asked to change the rite. Sometimes there is a legitimate change to be added. Those cultures which have a Spanish or Filipino influence ask for the rite of the lazo and arras; that is the rite of the veil and coins. This is an adaptation that is allowed and the New Rite of Marriage will have prayers for it. Each prayer will explain the significance of the ritual action. What is not allowed is the so called “Unity Candle” or other acts and signs of the unity of Aldo and Lena becoming one. Such practices as these came into the Rite of Marriage via secular roads and are not part of the Catholic Rite of Marriage. They can be incorporated into the rehearsal or reception dinners but are not part of the Rite of Marriage itself.
There are a few other gestures or elements to consider. No one “gives the bride away” or asks if there are any conflicts with the marriage and with none coming forth all are told to “forever hold peace.” The couple has already been interviewed and witnesses have sworn testimony that neither is currently in a marriage. Avoiding any known polygamy, Aldo and Lena are “free to marry.” There is no real need to pull the bride’s veil back; it is not an arranged marriage where the bride and the groom have never seen each other. In fact the New Rite suggests that the bride and the groom should be welcomed into the church at the door of the church and process into the church together. You see, we are a church that enjoys processions and repetitions of processions. For baptisms, the baby is welcomed at the door of the church and processes with parents into the church. Catechumens are welcomed at the church door and are walked to their place in the church. A deceased member is welcomed into the church at its door, recalling the water of baptism is sprinkled with water, and walked to the sanctuary for the funeral Mass.
A lot of planning the wedding ceremony is a matter of respecting the Rite of Marriage, the dream of the bride and groom, and from the priest’s patient instruction regarding the Rite of Marriage, the art of negotiation and diplomacy!
SEPARATE NOTE: We all would appreciate more altar servers – especially those of you who are already experienced and in high school. Your service is a tremendous witness to us that your faith is mature and growing every year. You are still important in our in our community. Please contact Mr. Cardinali (listed in page two of bulletin) or me, Fr. Mike, OSM. Thanks so much.
And Finally! Fr. Jack Wall’s visit to St. Juliana’s is cancelled for now. It will be rescheduled. He was to come on July 31st. Now he has to preside at another ceremony in Chicago, his home, on that date. Watch this space for a new date! Looking forward to what he will offer us and an evening of “Faith, Family, and Food” together, I am sorry!

PRAYER REQUESTS
ANNIVERSARY NEWS! John and Roberta Pantle
July 15 -- 55th Wedding Anniversary Congratulations!
Sunday, July 17, 2016 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last Sunday’s “Good Samaritan” parable concluded with Jesus’ command: Go provide hands-on mercy to the next person you meet, no conditions, no limits, no exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to criticize Martha’s hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising Mary’s “hands-off” as “choosing the better part” (Luke 10:42). Mary sat listening (10:39), leaving Martha “burdened with much serving by herself” (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence “superior,” but the active life of earning a living, raising a family, running parishes, schools, hospitals, and social service ministries “second-class” discipleship? No; Jesus’ example is not either/or but both/and: silent communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus in silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others? If we do not serve Jesus in others, will our worship, despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This Jubilee Y ear of Mercy offers us Jesus’ two-fold challenge: both “go and do” and “sit and listen.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

this fund raiser to help fund the 3 Life Centers, the 6 Birth Choice Obria health clinics and the homes for pregnant moth-ers in need in Orange County. They rely on this collection for their annual operation costs.
Encourage your children too, to save their change during the summer months to help these unborn babies live.
The parish Respect Life Group will be handing out baby bottles August 13 & 14 to take home and fill with these coins. Then return the bottles on August 27 & 28. You can also inser t paper money or checks in the bottles for this collection.
We like the

For adults today, the Church, after the Second Vatican Council, has restored the order of the Catechumenate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults(RCIA). It outlines the steps for the formation of catechumens (non-baptized persons), bringing their conversion to the faith to a greater maturity. It helps them respond more deeply to God's gracious initiative in their lives and prepares them for union with the Church community. This process is meant to form them into the fullness of the Christian life and to become disciples of Jesus, their teacher. This includes an initiation into the mystery of salvation, the practice of faith, hope, and love, and other virtues in a succession of liturgical rites.
Persons baptized into another Christian church and now seeking full communion with the Catholic Church are also welcomed to participate along with catechumens in the RCIA in the process of learning about the Catholic faith and being formed in that faith. They bring to the process of prepa-ration their prior experience of Christian life and prayer. For a baptized Christian, reception into full communion with the Catholic Church involves reception of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and then a Profession of Faith followed by the celebration of Confirmation and the Eu-charist.
If you or someone you love is not baptized or baptized in another Christian faith and seek full communion with the Roman Catholic Church we look forward to talking with you and assisting in your discernment. Contact the Parish Office at 714-879-1965 to speak with the RCIA Team.

Third World Gifts & Handarts will be having a sale of fair trade crafts and other products, including those of Homeboy Industries/Homegirl Catering, here following all masses this weekend — July 16 and 17. Since their founding at a parish in Anaheim in 1975, they have aided thousands of impoverished families in the U.S. and abroad as a year-round, nonprofit marketing service. They oper-ate a gift shop in Orange and can be reached at 714/464-0556.
During their visit, you may bring these donations for their ongoing collection drive for Catholic missions serving low-income Native Americans in the Southwest, and for those serving the poor in Mexico and/or near the border: new school supplies, backpacks, hygiene products, baby items and nutritious foods, plus freshly laundered blankets and clothing (shoes in separate bags, please). Thank you!
