THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

Page Three October 2, 2016 ~ A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M. ~

“Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. Nothing was what it used to be – not even nostalgia” wrote the humor-ist, Peter De Vries. I’ve used the nifty quote several times, usually with some melancholy, as people and things in my life have changed and not always for the better. (Thank you John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney – In My Life, is my favorite Beatles song.) Nostalgia looks at the past usually as being a bet-ter experience than the present or the near past.

Well, wipe away melancholy, stomp on sentimental nostalgia – The St. Juliana Fall Festival – just last weekend was the greatest! And you made it so! Three nights of music, three nights of rides, three nights of food, three nights of good company in a parking lot transformed into a good carnival space for all.

It is also three nights of hard work by volunteers, staff members, and the coordination of the Kohauts. We are grateful to you. Everyone, be sure to thank someone you remember who served you, greeted you, or provided a service to you. The Festival doesn’t “just happen to run itself.”

Remember the music from young “Colony Boys”or “Men in Crisis” to your favorite – did you eat Filipino food, the baked potatoes, marinated tri-tip, a taco, a hot dog (no ketchup) or Italian sausage and onions – did you drink water, soda, beer, coffee – did you enjoy a dessert of FUNnel cake, cupcakes, or cannoli (filled all the way through) – everyone get enough rides and games? Our festi-val is described only in superlatives.

Thank you, each of you who volunteered long hours and who chaired the many parts of the event. You made it perfect. Thank you for coming and for bringing friends and family members. Thank you for being the St. Juliana Falconieri Parish Community.

Also part of nostalgia for me last week was a special audience with Vin Scully! St. Vin Scully, that voice that most of us listened to as we grew up and grew old. I am lucky enough to know the good Dominican Sisters at St. Catherine’s Academy (we called it St. Catherine’s Military School when I went there). The sisters know Tommy Lasorda who arranged for three of us to meet Mr. Scully. Last week he was taking ten minute audiences with people – we were three of those fortunate people on Monday, September 19 – when the Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants with a bottom of the ninth inning walk off hit. “Oh, what a night” mid-September in 2016.

I remember, as most of us do, begging teachers to let the class huddle around a transistor radio when the Dodgers were playing World Series games on a school day afternoon.

I have always really enjoyed Vin’s broadcasts. Even if baseball is not to be liked because it is too slow, his tenor voice describing as Kevin Costner called it his “personal window into the game. A look through the knot-hole telling the rest of us what was going on.” We thought he was describing a baseball game when really, much of the time he was teaching, telling a lesson on how to be human whether you live or are from a huge city or a town with only one intersection where the stop light in your direction of travel is usual-ly red. He is a great example of how the Roman Catholic Church and its schools (grammar, high, and university) can shape a human being.

Along with Paul Harvey, Charles Osgood, and Garrison Keillor another super icon of radio will be retired and not replaced so quick-ly. I remember Jack Smith, Jim Murray, and Paul Conrad of the Los Angeles Times, fine people of print who have not been re-placed so quickly.

National League baseball is wonderful this year. But I’ve got a problem. The Dodgers and the Cubs, I love them both. Dodgers are MY National League team and I inherited the Cubs from my parents. Both are in the play-offs. Cubs haven’t been in the World Series since 1945, they haven’t won it since 1908. But I also what the Bums in Blue to “Win One For Vin.”

College football, don’t even bring it up. The Rams are back in (near) town.

Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. In my life people and things have changed. I give a bunch of thanks for what was. Thanks for the memories. For what is, let’s celebrate good times. Come On! Wa HOOO!

October 2, 2016 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jubilee of Marian Devotion begins next Saturday “How long, O LORD?” (Habakkuk 1:2). With Habakkuk’s question echoing across twenty-six hundred years, Respect Life Sunday finds all life claiming sanctuary in our hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee, imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth, Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si’, bears scars of disrespect for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened, as in Habakkuk’s day, with ruin and misery, “destruction and violence, . . . strife and clamorous discord” (see 1:3). Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we “unprofitable servants” cry with the apostles, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:10, 5). But Jesus’ reply might be paraphrased, “Not quantity—quality.” Next weekend marks the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy’s special devotion to Mary, whose willingness to shelter Jesus in her womb and stand at the foot of his cross bears witness to the qualities that Jesus expects our faith to manifest: the willingness to trust, to risk, and to dare to speak up for life. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

LET GO AND LET GOD Many twelve-step programs use the phrase “Let go and let God.” In all their simplicity, these five words are the heart of today’s readings. For people who struggle with addictive be-havior, these words plainly remind us that we can’t manage, control, or manipulate certain areas of our lives. How many times can we look back in our lives and find evidence of some plan at work other than our own? These are the moments when, for whatever reasons, we let someone greater than ourselves work the plan. We probably didn’t even recognize at the time that we were letting go of anything, but in retrospect, we see God’s hand and loving presence. It is our awareness of these moments that gives us the courage and initiative to let go again later on. It is this courage and initiative that are highlighted in today’s readings. We come to call it “faith.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — In spite of violence, destruction, and ruin, the just person, because of faith, will live (Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4). FAITH FORMATION Page Six

Our children are a gift from God and as a community that embraces this gift, we share the Liturgy with them in an age appropriate way. Sharing the Liturgy of the Word with children offers them an opportunity to meet

their heavenly Father and to discover for themselves the riches that lie within the

pages of Holy Scripture.

How to Join our Team There will be a 1 hour orientation for teens and Adults on

this Monday, October 3rd at 7pm in the Youth Room which is located

upstairs in the Parish Center. We will provide you with all that you need to participate in this minis-try including mentorship on the practical side of things. We will always be sent in twos to do this ministry so you are never alone!

For more info call Mike McHenry @ 714-853-1193 or email [email protected].
