June Meeting Minutes The June meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by President Vicki Ury. Introduction of new General Manager Mike Neufeld introduced the new GM Brent Hall. He is a car guy! Although Fords are part of his background, he has seen the light. Brent acknowledged Corvettes are an exceptional product and the best sports car. And, racing is in his blood. His dad has a history of racing and now has a 2004 Z06 for auto crossing. Brent says he appreciates the Club having our meetings at the dealership. He wants our business and wants to provide the level of service we desire. Welcome Brent Hall! Brent also announced Daniels Long will have a tent and a Corvette Z06 and a Camaro at the Air Attack event June 17-18. They might even let serious lookers drive Treasurer’s Report –Treasurer Anita Smith reported on the current funds available. Recent sanctioned events netted a profit. Gwenda thanked those members who submit articles and photos for the newsletter. Past Event Reports - Barrett Benson reported the Fun in the Sun Concours event was a good event, thanking the judges and our master calculator Walt Jenkins for the added work for a Concours car show. Although running a little different format this year, Tom Ury reported the Cone Zone Driving School went well. There were also two autocrosses in the afternoon. Are volunteers are key to successful events. Thanks to those who came out. See more articles and pictures of events represented in the newsletter.

Guests were introduced by Chris Capshaw. One person in attendance was eligible to be voted in as a new member. Welcome Ron & Jennifer Fitch. New Cars, Upgrades, and Miscellaneous With just a little prodding, Lynn Wittrock announced he has a new car. He traded in his C-5 for a 2015 Night Race Blue Z-51 Coupe. What a beauty! 2017 Cone Zone Driving School & AutoX’s The Colorado Springs Corvette Club offers many exciting, fun, and successful events, however the Cone Zone School was a bit different. Oh, it had all the fun, excitement, and success, but it was also magical. The magic… A guest arrived in his new Z06; we will call him Mr. S. He registered for the school but said he didn’t want to drive his new Z06 because it had too much power. A couple of us looked at one another and just smiled. We arranged for Mr. S to take a couple of laps with a veteran racer. After those laps, Mr. S quickly jumped into his new Z06 and took to the course. He wanted to stay out there all day! His smile and appreciation was priceless! He signed up for the two afternoon races! How the magic happens…The true magic comes from all those members that volunteered to help with the “hosting” of the event. Several volunteers were at the track the day before to set the course. On event day, these same members and more were at the track 30 minutes prior to anyone else, manning the registration booth, teching the cars, or getting ready to instruct the racing novices. More volunteer members arrived to help with the afternoon autocrosses and stayed at the track until all equipment was stowed away. Tom and I would like to extend our appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the following members and non-members: Larry and Gwenda Valentine, John Ames, Kerry Ferguson, Jerry Ludke, Chris and Johnathan Capshaw, Barrett Benson, Mark Black, Brian Dahl, Curtis Haynes, Woody and Kea Kercheval, Mark LaJoie, Sophia and Anna Valentine, T.J. and Amanda Larson, Dan and Jan McCarty, Dave and Phyllis Ury, Lynn Wittrock, Barb and Randy Zornes from TORCA, Bob Landdeck and Al Cozzetto from SC

3. We would also like to

extend a “thank you” to Walt Jenkins, your efforts in teaching a new timing team the ropes is greatly appreciated. Side note: This year’s Cone Zone training was very different

compared with other years. Students got to drive a short version of the actual course with an instructor along for each run, giving feedback as needed. Comments for this training were very positive and we’d still like to hear from you as to how everything went and if we can make it better. by Vicki Ury

Memorial Day Autocross

We all have our reasons for living in Colorado. However, attending DCA’s Annual Memorial Day Autocross May 28 gave the number 1 reason for being a resident. The sky was blue, the mountain tops were white, and the Corvettes were fast. Don and Cindy McCoy, Laurie and Lorren Loewen, Anita and Steve Smith, and Tom and Vicki Ury represented CSCC at the event. Laurie and Tom along with Lorren and Anita jockeyed for the 1

st and 2

nd fastest times. By Vicki Ury

DCA’s “Corvettes on Colfax” Car Show. Four CSCC members traveled to Aurora May 27 to show off their cars at the car show. Participants were treated to breakfast goodies, as well as burgers and hotdogs for lunch. A few sprinkles were encountered during the show, but the skies cleared long enough for the winners to claim their trophies. Ton Hanon took 1

st place in the C6 class, while Chris Capshaw

captured 2nd

place in the C3 class, and Wayne Umland brought home 3

rd place in the Modified class. By Chris Capshaw

Bird Dog BBQ “Cruisin’ the Gods” June 3 What could be better than cruising, showing off your Corvette, and eating BBQ? The owners of twenty-one Corvettes from our club, plus one member from SCCC (Pueblo), did just that on June 3

rd at Bird Dog BBQ’s monthly “Cruisin the Gods,” show and shine car

show. Spectators came in from everywhere, to look at all the great cars on display. Our Corvettes were without a doubt, the dominant feature there. When our members were able to break away from elucidating about their cars, they slapped on sun screen. The weather was gorgeously sunny, with just enough clouds and breeze, to keep the temperature comfortable. For some of our members, it was the second car show of the day. All participants were given discount coupons for lunch, so we all took advantage of Bird Dog’s great BBQ, and upon leaving, were looking forward to next month’s show. By Chris Capshaw

Grand Junction Motor Speedway Autocross – June 4th Traveling to Grand Junction to participate in the annual speedway event hosted by CWCC has really become a Colorado Spring Corvette Club tradition. The tradition usually starts on a Saturday morning with a caravan of trucks with trailers and Corvettes making the trek from the Front Range to the Western Slope. Saturday evening is the traditional “all Corvette clubs” dinner; this year it was at The Ale House (highly recommend). Sunday morning, we are all at the track, trying to find some way to keep cool – drivers and Corvettes. This year presented a few challenges to CSCC members; Alan Russ experienced a fuel line issue while driving into town on Saturday. A tow truck was needed and he ended up driving a new Malibu for the weekend. At the autocross, Roger Miller’s C6 Corvette had fan issues, his car came home in Steve and Anita Smith’s trailer and Roger ended up driving the Smith’s C7 Corvette home. Roger is probably now in the market for a C7, Z06.

Members participating in the: Laurie and Lorren Loewen, Roxann and Darrell Dearman, Alan Russ, Anita and Steve Smith, Vicki and Tom Ury, Tanya and Doug Cox, Jerry Ludke and grandson Sam, and Roger Miller. Lorren Loewen and Tanya Hrabal-Cox had the fastest times of the day for the Colorado Springs Corvette Club. All had lots of fun and many laughs. By Vicki Ury

Route 66 Road Trip May 30th we began our 2017 Route 66 road Trip from Colorado Springs. In attendance were Paul and Rita Thompson, Kerry and Sheri Ferguson, Mike Sabo and friend Bill, and me Robert Sanders. We met Mark Suzuki and his son Nick at Lotta Burgers in Albuquerque, NM for lunch. After lunch and a drivers meeting we drove over to America’s Singing Highway which officially kicked off our trip. We followed Route 66 in parts and stopped at the Blue Swallow Motel for the night. What a great historic site. We continued our trip with a stop at the Cadillac Ranch and painted our CSCC logo onto the cars. Throughout the trip, we stopped regularly for coffee, stretch our legs, and potty stops. We saw and visited several historic diners and museums along the way. There were two highlights enjoyed by all - listening to Blues and Country Music in Nashville and the Corvette Assembly Plant Tour. We were all excited to drive our cars on their race track for four high speed laps. What a blast. We visited other notable historic sites and ate the best BBQ in the world at Rustlers BBQ in Alma, KY. Here are a couple to show the fun we had. Additional Pictures and videos can be found on the CSCC website. By Robert Sanders

Get to Know Your Fellow Members

An Interview with Scott and Anne Lewis

How long have you been a CSCC member? Intermittently since 2000, but

most recently rejoined in 2014. What Corvette(s) do you currently own?

1996 Grand Sport Coupe, 2009 Competition Sport Edition Z06, 2016 C7R Edition Z06. Marital Status? Married for almost 17

years How did you meet? A mutual friend who

knew we both owned Corvettes introduced us. Anne lived in Arvada and Scott lived in Victor near the gold mine, so we would try to get together on the weekends battling snow storms and other inclement weather. Scott introduced Anne to downhill skiing, mountain biking and inline skating. Anne schooled Scott on appreciating the arts and night life in Denver.

Where are you from? Anne is from

Arvada and Scott is originally from Aurora, Illinois. Most of Anne’s life has been spent in Colorado with the exception of a four year foray to St. Louis, Missouri. Scott has moved around a lot (e.g., Montana, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Missouri and Peru) over the years for his work in mining and traveled extensively. Employment? Anne works for the State

of Colorado and as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor in Castle Rock. Scott is contemplating retirement after spending the last +4 years working in the high Andes and jungles in South America. Kids? No kids. Pets? An 11 year old African Grey Parrot Favorite club activity? Autocrossing Hobbies? Anne is a fitness fanatic and an

aspiring automotive artist that hopes to devote more time to her artwork in the future. Scott enjoys mountain biking, inline skating and working on the cars. He is anxious to get back into downhill and cross country skiing next winter. What is the best vacation you ever took? After we got married at the Little

White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, on the back of our brand new Millennium Yellow 2000 C5 Corvette convertible, we traveled to southern California to visit family for a few days. Then we did a road trip all the way up the west coast to Beaverton, Oregon to visit Scott’s sister. Neither of us had ever traveled Highway 101, so we did not realize how long it would take. We took turns getting car sick and switching drivers, which seemed to be the cure for whomever was at the helm in the twisties. After spending a few days in the Portland area, we headed to Bozeman, Montana where Scott went to college, then on to Yellowstone the next day. *********************************************

We encountered the beginning of a big weather change in mid-September as we headed to Yellowstone. It quickly became apparent that we needed to head south. We saw the lodge at Old Faithful, but the geyser’s eruption was disappointing that day and we moved quickly onward. We stopped for the night at Rock Springs, Wyoming and awakened to over 6 inches of new snow. It took us most of the day to travel the 110 miles from Rock Springs to Rawlins on snow packed and slushy interstate in the new Corvette. We decided to get a hotel room in Rawlins, which was good because I-80 was shut down shortly thereafter for the next 2.5 days. During the days we were stranded, our survival food within walking distance was Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, McDonalds and a couple of gas station convenience stores. We finally made it home safely to Colorado and miraculously there was no damage to our Corvette. What is your dream corvette? Anne’s is

her 1996 Grand Sport. Scott’s is his 2016 C7R Edition Z06. How did your love of Corvettes come about? Anne’s dad was a car guy, so she

always had a love for cars. Each of her purchases as a young adult was a step up from the previous one until she was finally able to afford a 1986 silver and charcoal C4 Corvette. Scott’s love of Corvettes started in the mid-60’s when he would see all the muscle car’s cruising Lake Street in Aurora and the Corvettes would roll in. He did not fully understand what these sleek cars were, but they were way cooler than the muscle cars and Corvairs. Anything else you would like to add?

We are both very appreciative of how our Corvette family looked after Anne while Scott was in South America for the last +4 years. Our sincere thanks to each of you. Thanks for the interview Anne & Scott!

TiN

I bought a new set of hex-shank drills the other day at that discount tool mart, for cheap, and they had a gold coating on them. After easily breaking one on a hole the other day, I got to thinking how many people think they are getting a better product with that coating? Since I was an engineer in the machining industry, I am educated on the application of TiN coating. Here’s my take on those fancy coatings, and how they fit your needs. Coatings were primarily developed for the high-production machining industry, where the tooling is important in keeping production running. Shutting a line down for even a few minutes while a drill is replaced can cost hundreds of dollars. Hence, they developed a new coating, super hard and super wear resistant. This was the original gold coating called Titanium Nitride or TiN. There are many variants of this now, but that was the original. It helped with tip wear, chip flow, and especially with flank wear. No question. Keep in mind that in production situations, the tools have ideal RPM’s and feed-rates with extremely rigid spindles with high thrust. Enter you and me in our garage shops: Other than being a hard coating, you will never notice a difference. Microscopically, the plated drill has a slight radius at the edge caused by plating, which is ideal for high thrust applications. In reality though, you will have to press slightly harder on the drill to get it to cut versus the standard uncoated drill. Use a drill press always when you can. Again, you will not notice much difference. In the end, for the casual workshop, save your money and buy good grade HSS or cobalt drills if you can. Remember, if you buy and snap off a cheap drill—have a backup for it or plan on another 30 minutes added to your project time while you go buy another. 23RD ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Every year around this time I remind the CSCC membership about National Corvette Museum’s Anniversary Celebration of its Grand Opening in 1994. In this 23rd year, the Celebration and Hall of Fame banquet will be August 31st - September 2nd. Online registration closes August 17th at 5 p.m. CDT, but you can also register at the Museum in person until the close of the event. The focus this year is on the diversity of people Corvette has brought together, with a look back at NCM’s history and forward to its future. Attendees will get a close look at the 2018 Corvettes and Z06’s, and GM representatives will be there to answer your questions. Seminars include: Tires and Brakes through the generations; Hand Building the LT4 engine; Corvette Racing; Updates on the Corvette Assembly Plant; and Paul Koerner’s Classroom Sessions. The Hall of Fame banquet will honor Peter Brock, Jim Minneker, and Tommy Morrison. Registration is free for Lifetime members, $20 for members, and $30 for non-members. The Friday, September 1st Hall of Fame banquet is $70 per person. This Labor Day weekend event is anticipated every year by the many of us Museum devotees, and this year promises to be another enjoyable gathering. Whether joining us for the first time, or returning…. hope to see you there! NOTE: The Black Rose color will be phased out in August, and will be replaced with another color, but not right away. RAFFLE: I’ll have $10 raffle tickets for a 2017 Torch Red Stingray Coupe at the July meeting. The drawing will be Saturday, September 2nd

during the 23rd Anniversary Celebration.
