President’s Message

Dear Rotarians and friends of Rotary,

Rotary attendance

Rotary is a participatory organiza-tion which highly values regular attendance. Being present at the weekly meetings is considered a vital part of the operation and success of a strong and active Rotary Club. For this reason, be-ing present at our Club’s meet-ings is one of the basic obligations a member accepts upon joining Rotary. Although attendance re-flects your availability and desire to serve, there may be times when business pressures may make nor-mal attendance difficult. Any time that you truly cannot stay for an entire meeting, you can still receive credit for that meeting if

you’re present until at least 1:30pm.

Over the last few months, some of our members(refer to the Statistics in the Namuziga today) have missed many fellowships. It becomes increasingly difficult to contribute if you are consistently missing fellowships.

On that note we shall not hesitate to terminate mem-bership for all those who will fall below 50% attendance plus makeups at the end of this month.

Rotary Hospital.

Join me in thanking the construction committee com-prised of myself, Rtn Gabriel Hatega, Henry Ssentoogo, Rosemary Mutyabule, James Serogo, Andrew Ntege-ka, Fredrick Kamya, Edward Kaddumukasa, Stephen Lwanga and George Kaseddemukasa that accepted to continue serving for the next two years. This will inevi-tably ensure continuity and it’s an assurance that the momentum we started with will be maintained hence proper completion and running of the Rotary Hospital.

I have no better way to thank Rtn PP Henry Ssentoogo for accepting to continue hosting all committee meet-ings and providing all the refreshments at his office for the next two years.

We are now at the finishing stage of our OPD and I wish to take this opportunity to invite the whole club, other Rotarians and friends to visit our Hospital project on 30th April 2015 at 2:30pm. This will be the last visit this Rotary year, so please try not to miss.

To some individuals, the rules regard-ing attendance may seem rigid. Keep in mind, however, that when you joined Rotary, you made a commitment to the principle of regular attendance. For a Ro-tarian to miss four consecutive meetings, or disregard the other attendance re-quirements, is tantamount to the submis-sion of one’s resignation from the Club. When a Club terminates a member for non-attendance, it is simply an accep-tance of a resignation - not a punitive action by the Club’s officers.

Get In The Habit Because it is your responsibility, as a Rotar-ian, to attend weekly meetings, it is sug-gested that you make Thursday lunches “off limits” for other commitments. All Rotar-ians know the consequences of non-atten-dance, so it clearly becomes a conscious decision by a Rotarian to withdraw from the Club when he or she fails to fulfill the at-tendance requirements.

APRIL IS ROTARY M A G A Z I N E M O N T HApril is Rotary Magazine Month. This is a time when Rotarians are asked to consider the use of the written word to promote Ro-

tary. This includes encouraging the distribution of Rotary’s magazine “The Rotar-ian.”

The RI Board of Directors has desig-nated April of every year as Magazine Month. It is a time to recog-nize the role

that our Rotary publications play in our Rotary lives – and the role that we should play in our publications. For the magazines to live up to Paul Harris’ original vision, it takes more than just an editorial staff: It also takes the good work of Rotarians. I always feel that the best part of reading any Rotary publication is the opportunity to find out what other clubs are doing. Each issue, each article, is a chance to be informed and inspired.

In an era when electronic communication seems to be everywhere, the role of the paper-and-ink magazine is still

important to our organization. Rotary magazines provide us with an overview of what’s happening in different clubs and districts as well as important news and updates from RI headquarters.Even the many Rotarians who regularly visit www.rotary.org will find something new in every issue.

The Rotary World Magazine Press consists of 32 magazines from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe that inform, inspire, and entertain in 23 languages. In addition to The Rotarian, Rotary’s English-language flagship publication, it offers magazines such as Vida Rotaria (Argen-tina), Rotary in Bulgaria, and The Rotary-no-Tomo (Japan).

The RI Bylaws require all club members to subscribe to The Rotarian or a Rotary regional magazine. Rotary leaders, district governors, and club presidents are en-couraged to support magazine editors in their country or region by submitting story ideas, promoting readership, encouraging timely subscription payments, and assisting with other communication efforts.

The Rotarian is used in many ways. Obviously, all members of the Club are encouraged to read the magazine first. After that, we attempt to distribute the magazine to the public generally. Some of our members take their magazines to their doctor’s or dentist’s offices to leave with the other reading material in the recep-tion area. I do the same with mine in my law office.

It is surprising how often clients will pass over the commercial magazines on the table and pick up The Rotarian just because it is something different. These people may not always be prospective Rotarians, but they are learning some-thing about Rotary.

Another use of the magazine is for the recruitment of new members. At a time when we are working hard at new member development, some of our club members save their magazines to give to those considering making Rotary part of their life. We combine this with giving such prospects one of the Service Above Self medallionsavailable from the Rotary suppliers. This is a great attention grabber, always lead-ing to discussions aboutthe Four Way Test inscribed on the me-dallions.

I use The Rotarian for gaining tidbits for the Rotary Moment. I conclude each of our club meetings with a two or three minute Rotary Moment. I believe that all our members enjoy hearing about some exciting community project or fund rais-ing idea from another Rotary Club.Probably three quarters of those mo-ments come right out of the pages of the Rotarian. They are always current, thought provoking and meaningful, easily accomplishing the purpose of the Rotary Moment.

Finally, we should be mindful that there are other ways to use the written word to promote Rotary. A good website, in-formative club bulletin and well drafted press releases on Rotary events are all important uses of the written word in this regard. These are tools we strive to use effectively at the Port Perry Rotary Club.
