WORLD AIDS DAY 2015

Dear Rotarians, Rotaractors and friends of Rotary,On 1st December 2015 the World will commemorate World AIDS Day which is observedannually around the world on 1stDecembereach year. World AIDS Dayis one of the most recognized inter-national eventsused to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic; take stock of achievements; rememberwho lost their lives to HIV; and re-dedicate ourselves to the fight against the epidemic.

As we commemoratethisyear’s World AIDS Day,Rotarians in District 9211 will join the rest of the world to observe this important global event. De-cember being Rotary Disease Prevention and Treatment month, this day provides an opportunity for us Rotarians to recommit ourselves to the fight against HIV/AIDS as well asprevention and treatment

of other diseases.

We need toremember that HIV/AIDS remains a major public health problem in our country. The HIV prevalence of 7.3% among people aged 15-49 yearsremainssignificant-ly high. Uganda has the high-est HIV prevalence in the East African region; currently the total number of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Uganda isestimated to be 1,486,642. Counseling and Testing (HCT), Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (eMTCT), Safe Male Circumcision (SMC), condomsand Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) as well as coverage of preventive behav-ioral interventions is still low.

In view of the challenges of HIV/AIDS and other diseases in our District, during this year under my leadership we formed a District Malaria and HIV/AIDS Committee in order to addressMalaria and HIV/AIDS in Uganda and Tanzania. I am very glad that, with the support of this Committee chaired by PP John Mugisa of the Rotary Club of Naalya, we have made significant progress.

Word from the president

Dear Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interac-tors And Friends of Rotary,Welcome to our last meeting of the months of November, The Rotary Foundation month. We are how-ever expected to crown it all at the TRF Recognition Dinner scheduled for 28th at Kampala Serena Hotel at 6:30pm. Let us meet there and prob-ably be made aware of how our gifts to the foundation are converted into gifts through projects to the com-munities.

Besides the dinner, the month ends with many other exciting activities throughout the weekend.

Rotary on the Green is on tomor-row Friday 27th and this activity is expected to attract many Rotarians including those who don’t know how to play the game. We hope and pray that the weather favours us this time.

On the same day 27th, The Pope arrives in Uganda. We need to join the various congregations where The Pope will be, in prayers as we prepare to elect our new leaders. Please allocate your time properly and I wish you a very good weekend as we welcome the family month.Be a gift to the world.

Be a gift to the world.

Edward KaddumukasaPresident.

ROTARY FAMILY HEALTH DAYS 2015

Guest Speaker’s ProfileMR. KAAKPEMA YELPAALAFounder & CEO, access.mobile

After obtaining his masters from the Yale School of Public Health, CEO and Founder of access.mobile Kaakpema “KP” Yelpaala became one of the ear-ly members of the Clinton Health Ac-cess Initiative in East Africa. Witnessing firsthand the growing momentum of the African telecommunications sector in the early 2000s, Yelpaala founded access.mobile in 2011 as a means of leveraging mobile technology to address access to healthcare issues across sub-Saharan Africa. amHealth, his company’s signature product, was developed in collaboration with hospitals and clinics in Kampala, Ugan-da, and has since been adopted by healthcare providers throughout the region. Yelpaala is currently oversee-ing the development of amHealth, as well as spearheading the expansion of access.mobile throughout East and West Africa. Currently, access.mobile has a foot print in Uganda, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria.

Yelpaala has also worked for Dalberg Global Development Advisors, pro-viding strategy consulting to the UN and large multinationals around the world and taught at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, Uni-versity of Denver. In 2014, Kaakpema was appointed to the Governor of Colorado’s Small Business Council and he is a Co-Chair of the International Trade Committee for that board and currently serves on the Yale School of Public Health Leadership Council. He has an MPH from the Yale School of Public Health and a BA with Honors in economic development and public health from Brown University.

We have developed a comprehensive District Malaria and HIV/AIDS Plan (2015-16) that outlines cost effective interventions to be implemented by Rotary Clubs to prevent and control Malaria and HIV/AIDS in our District. The Plan is currently being disseminated to all Clubs urging Rotarians to plan and implement Malaria and HIV/AIDS activities targeting de-prived communities in the District. I would like to commend the work of this Committee and wish to urge all Rotarians to embrace this Plan and implement proposed activities during this Rotary year in order to address Malaria and HIV/AIDS epidemic in our District. As we implement these activities we need to target the most vulnerable sub-population groups that contribute greatly to the current trend of HIV/AIDS epidemic in our District. Special attention should be given to adolescents and young people who are highly vulnerable and the Most at Risk Populations such as fish-ing communities, sex workers, long distance truckers, boda bodas and uniformed services.

I am very happy to note that, as we mark this year’s World AIDS Day, a number of activities have been organized by the District Malaria and HIV/AIDS Committee to ensure effective participation of Rotarians in this Campaign. Among other activities, a Forum for all Rotar-ians in Kampalahas been organized where an AIDS Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Ministry of Health and Uganda AIDS Commis-sion.This Forum will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Wandegeya at Kolping Hotelon 1st December 2015 beginning at 6pm. I would like to urge all Rotarians to attend this impor-tant event and learn more about HIV/AIDS in the country and become better advocates of the national AIDS response. In addition, the Rotary Club of Kasese will be organizing a Medical Camp on 1st December 2015 to be hosted at the national venue for World AIDS Day at Nyakasanga Stadium in Kasese District.The medical camp will offer a wide range of HIV/AIDS related services including;

HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT), Safe Male Circumcision (SMC), Family Planning and Condom distribution among others. Other RotaryClubs are invited to join the Rotary Club of Kasese to participate in this national event.I would also like to encourage individual clubs to organize compassionate activities including visiting HIV affected communities and familiesin your area to offer psychosocial and material support during this event. Family visits will go a long way address stigma and discrimination which remains a big hindrance to HIV/AIDS response in the country.

As I conclude, I would like to commend the efforts of the Government of Uganda and wish to thank you all Rotarians and friends of Rotary for your collective and individual efforts in the continued fight against HIV/AIDS in our District. However, there is still much more to do to end ends AIDS.The world has committed to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is time to redouble our efforts and fast-track our actions in order to achieve this ambitious Goal. Therefore, I urgeall Rotarians in the District to use this Day as a platform to mobilize the community, create awareness and advocacy as well as re-energize the role of Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactorstoin-tensify their effortstowards HIV prevention and control.

Finally, in fulfillment of the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day “Getting to zero: My Responsibility”as Rotarians, let us take up HIV/AIDS as our responsibility, renew our commitment and work together as a Rotary family to attain, Zero new infections, Zero stigma and Zero AIDS related deathsand ensureAIDS-free generation by 2030.We have done this for Polio, and therefore we do the same for HIV/AIDS.

Thank you,

DG Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa

No doubt many of you will chuckle because you have had to face this dreaded question from your three or four-year old. “Mummy, where do babies come from?” The easy answer, “They grow up in my stomach”, hoping the toddler will shut up. But they are persistent! “But who puts them there?” There are many variations to this age old conversation. Of course those who grow up on farms in the country side see the mating act happening all the time, but the questions come regardless. You get impatient. “Go and ask your Dad!” or “Go and ask you Mum!”

Equally interesting is that many of our clubs really want to grow, but they still ask the question: “DG Bob, where do the members come from?” Bob: “Rotary is by invitation. We must invite them.” Rotarian: “But what if they do not want to join, or they think it is too expensive and for the rich?” So Bob patiently explains: “Why don’t you invite your spouse or partner? Surely if you enjoy Rotary, they will enjoy it” “I know you have a lot of friends. Surely if you yourself qualify to be a Rotarian, and they are really your friends,

they will also qualify. I also know friends tend to have similar social inclinations, so they will enjoy Rotary as much as you do” “I know you work somewhere with a lot of other people, colleagues, business persons, professionals. Rotary also needs the same combination of expertise. Please invite them!” And with a chuckle and a twinkle in his eye, he will probably add, “Do you remember our young days when we were single and daring, and you would approach a boy or girl you have never met because they excited your hormones? I know many relationships that started like that. Why don’t you try that?” And like toddlers, we shall not leave Bob alone, we shall continue asking the questions instead of getting on with it until he says impatiently, “Go and ask the District Membership and Extension Chair Tusu!” or “Go and ask PP Joseph in Uganda or Venancio in Tanzania” or “Why don’t you speak to your AG?” Not to worry – go to them, they are all available and willing to help. Let us end infertility in our clubs!

By PDG Tusu

We extend sincere appreciation to the clubs below that are helping in kicking Rotary infertility out of our great District! We especially acknowledge and salute the love for Rotary shown by the dedicated team of District Governor’s Special Representatives and the upcoming Charter Presidents of the clubs in formation. Because you are, Rotary will be. In African tradition, a child is brought up by the entire village. As Rotarians, we should all visit these clubs in formation and by that very act, demonstrate what words do not put across clearly – that they are joining a family much bigger than their clubs. Share your Rotary stories with them, one-to-one, and honestly - why you originally joined Rotary (for most of us, this was not about service!), why and how you changed, and what has made you stay. If your club has not started on a new club yet, do not despair. There is an experienced team of traditional healers that know the right herbs and mixtures to cure infertility – and at no cost. They are easy to find because they make up the District Membership Development and Rotary Extension Team.
