President’s Message

Friends,

Allow me to start by saying THANK YOU to all of you who honoured my family’s invita-tion to the home hospitality last Friday. Your presence in such large numbers was a blessing to us. I hope you all had as great a time as I did hosting you.

A new month is upon us, Febru-ary, the Rotary Month of World Peace and Understanding. As Rotarians we are once again being reminded that we need to observe the fourth object of Rotary which is “the advance-ment of international under-standing, goodwill, and peace

through a world fellowship of business and profes-sional persons united in the ideal of service”. When you accept membership in a Rotary Club, you not only become a member of your City’s Club but of a great body of 1.2 million Rotarians belonging to 27,000 clubs in over 150 countries! This principle pro-vides Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. It serves as a foundation for our relation-ships with each other and the action we take in the world.

Last Friday, 30th January, President Da-vid Kasingwire, hosted Rotarians and Non-Rotarians to a beginning of year party! Words alone cannot describe the mood, the great food, the friends and the general ambience of the event. You needed to be there to see it for yourself.

With flashing lights and dazzling table sets, one would be mistaken into think-ing they had walked into a wedding re-ception. ‘Ooohs’ and ‘aaahs’ were all you heard whenever someone walked through the gate into the party scene -

IPP Enid outdid herself on the décor! The beautiful cool night made it even more special as we sat right under the perfect starry sky. The Police Jazz Band put to bed all the myths we ever had about the Po-lice and their music… We were mesmer-ized by the beautiful girls crooning their hearts out and we loudly wondered if they were cops too!

By day, Rotarians are busy, professional and almost very serious individuals, but that night brought out a different side to them that most of us did not know. Rtns

Flavia and Herbert Kasiita (RC Kampala), Rtn. JB Wasswa (RC Ssese lslands), Rtn. Jes-sica (RC Rubaga), Rtn. Flavia Serugo (RC Naalya), and Rotaractor Moses Kiboneka, all took to the mic, the drums and the gui-tar at various points throughout the night and proved to us that Rotary is indeed a collection of talents! Who knew that Rtn. Ethan Musolini could do the Kiganda dance like he was a real ‘musajja wa Ka-baka?’ or that PP Kakembo is a genius at the Calyso dance!

Rtn. George Kasedde Mukasa and his dance partner showed us a thing or two about what real dancing is. The ease and class with which they twirled and sashayed around the dance floor in a classic waltz, chacha and rumba would have given any current dance troupe a run for their mon-ey. There was even a suggestion that the Past Presidents of the Club form a band with PP George on the piano, PP Galabuzi to train the vocalists and PP Kakembo train the queen dancers. I’ll wait with baited breath…..

It is indeed to describe a great event, so on behalf of all of us who had a marvelous time, I’ll simply say, Asante Sana President David and your Ann Patience. There are calls all around “nti tukikole neera, neera, neera”.

Rtn. Flavia and Rtcr. Moses singing their hearts out

RI President’s Message for February, 2015

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As president of Rotary, it’s my job to en-courage and inspire Rotarians wherever I meet them. It’s also my job to listen to what they have to say. Whether it’s a successful project or a challenge to overcome, a great Rotary Day or a new idea, I want to hear what Rotarians are thinking, doing, and planning. So when-ever I travel, I ask my hosts to talk to me about their clubs. What’s going well, where do they see a need to improve, and what can we at RI headquarters

do to help?

The answers are always interesting and often surprising. Sometimes I have a sug-gestion or an idea to contribute; some-times I am able to make a connection that will move a project forward. Often, I go back to Evanston with ideas and insights that help guide us in our deci-sions. But what I value most about these conversations are the stories I hear – the stories that, taken together, tell the story of Rotary.

In Atlanta, I attended a Rotary event honoring teachers and heard story after story about the gift of literacy and how it transforms lives. In Istanbul, I attended a wheelchair race and learned how Turk-ish Rotarians are working to improve the lives of people with disabilities. In Lima, Peru, I talked to a former Rotaractor who waited nearly 20 years to be invited to join a Rotary club, and heard about how returning to Rotary has transformed her life.

I’ve heard stories that have made me laugh, and stories that have moved me to tears. I’ve heard stories of how our service changes the lives of oth-

ers, and how it changes us as Rotarians. When I hear these stories, I can’t help but wonder: How many other lives could we change for the better by bringing more people into Rotary? And how many more people could we bring into Rotary simply by sharing our own Rotary stories?

In this Rotary year, I ask all of you to do just that: Share your Rotary stories. Tell them to your friends, on social media, and through Rotary.org. Our Rotary stories are what in-spire us, and what encourage others to join us; they help light up our service, as we work to Light Up Rotary.
