Family of Rotary,

In August this year during myexciting Club visits I was introduced toAkola Yafuna, an RCC sponsored by RCMasaka. The group had an array of

handcrafts and produce, which theyproudly displayed with gratitude totheir sponsors. What I found soamazingly gratifying was the spirit ofgiving that came with their hospitality.Out of their proceeds they donated

$30 to The Rotary Foundation!

This simple yet not so simple act warmed my heart. In an instant I realised that there arethose who know that Rotary does not empower them so that they can make a good life onlyfor themselves. They understand that whoever is empowered needs to empower another andanother according to their capacity.

Members of Akola Yafuna should be hailed for understanding that it takes combined efforts

to fight poverty, disease, illiteracy and the like. Can we emulate them and do even more thanwe are doing? Every Rotarian understands that he/she has an obligation to the less fortunate.

We all know the value of giving, and we have gone out of our way to do what is required ofus. We are empowered, not only with resources and expertise, but also with compassion andthe right attitude. For this Im eternally grateful.

This month therefore, I want us to reflect more on the other side of TRF. We have donatedmoney for projects all over the world, and we shall continue to do so. However, we need toremember that money is only as important as what it is used for. In this case Im looking at

our projects. Through our Clubs, we are obliged to engage TRF in our quest to do good inthe world and change lives. We must create favorable Club conditions in order to qualify forTRF grants and increase our impact. The best way to do this is by adopting good governancepractices. Let us be transparent and accountable to members, partners, the District and RI/TRF. Every Club member must be encouraged to pay his/her dues in time for proper

planning.By engaging The Rotary Foundation, fellow Rotarians, there is no doubt that we shall surelychange lives.

On Cloud 9...

Visitation days in boarding schools, commonly known as VDare scheduled events on a school calendar. Back in our days andeven now, VDs are, for many students, the most important

day on the school calendar. While for parents it is anopportunity to visit the children and review their academic progress; for the childrenit is a day to eat, eat and replenish their grub.

At my former primary school (Gayaza Junior), VD was the day to impress andhow we would look forward to those days which occurred once a month. The schoolwould prepare the best meal; we would wear our Sunday best; we would be at ourbest behavior and arrange our classrooms and school work in the most impressiveway possible. Even the teachers would on that day display higher standards ofprofessionalism as they updated parents on their childrens academic performanceand suggested ways for improvement.

Parents were less reliable. Depending on your performance, you could receive hugsor be left in tears. And both by the way were meant to motivate you to attain bettergrades. But I was a lucky girl. I was a performer. Every VD ended with aperformance of sorts and entertainment from the choir. And I remember most of thetime my mother pointing out to other parents saying thats my daughter leading thesong, Im so proud of her! You can imagine how that would make the young me feeland how we all worked hard for those moments.

I was reminded of the VDs last Wednesday when the District Governor D9211Emmanuel Katongole visited our club as part of the scheduled VDs in the Rotarycalendar. Just like in school, we prepared for the DGs visit ready to account for

our performance, but also hoping to impress. As a relatively young club we havehad more than our fair share of challenges. But the DG is a very kind parent andwhere we had shortcomings he came up with brilliant suggestions forimprovement. And where we had done relatively well, he praised usso much ..we were hanging on cloud 9 and the envy of other Rotarians from the 18clubs that visited that day.

Just like my mother did back in the day he left us feeling like special children.His speech was so motivating and left all of us at RC Kampala-Naalya renewed andcommitted to doubling our efforts to achieve higher grades by the end of theRotary year. The ball is in our court now. How do we secure our spot on cloud 9?

Engaging Rotary and Changing Lives

Our Guest Speaker last week was the District

Governor D9211Emmanuel Katongole whodelivered a rousing validation of Rotary at the Club

Assembly.

He however cautioned that while Rotary Clubs

in D9211 have undertaken numerous serviceprojects and have reached hundreds of

communitiesa lot more remains to be done.

More hands and funds are needed for the job

at hand and hence the need for moremembers.

He therefore challenged the current team of 21

at RC Kampala-Naalya to

explore all means of increasing

its numbers, noting thatanything that does not grow

is bound to die.

Rotary clubs around the world are pledging emergency aid to communies in centralPhilippines aer last weeks massive typhoon aened enre coastal towns and villages, killed

thousands of people, and displaced nearly 600,000 more. The situaon remains dire as

widespread destrucon has made food, water, and medicine scarce in remote areas aected

by Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm to make landfall on record. Rotary President Ron

Burton is urging our 34,000 clubs worldwide to connue to assist storm vicms.

"I know we all want to help. I am urging our clubs to take acon to provide emergency aid now

and begin planning for the future when we can help rebuild homes, schools, and businesses,"

says Burton. "We are in the business of helping people in need." Rotary partner ShelterBox

has commied aid for 4,000 families in the form of emergency shelter and other relief

assistance.

Such disasters are exactly why we entered into our partnership with ShelterBox, says Burton.It gives Rotary members worldwide the opportunity to respond immediately and in a very

meaningful way to the life-threatening condions faced by the people of the Philippines.

For nearly 100 years, Rotary clubs in the Philippines have been creang posive change in their

communies. The rst Philippine Rotary club was formed in Manila in 1919. Today, more than

800 Rotary clubs throughout the Philippines give members the chance to make a dierence at

home and around the globe. When a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Philippines in

September, clubs were there to bring aid to those in need.

Rotary members oen are both rst-responders and rebuilders when major disasters strike

because clubs are present in every corner of the world, Burton says. We connue with

recovery eorts long aer internaonal relief agencies have gonebecause Rotary clubs arepart of the communies we serve.
