She was the French steamer Agen, of La Rochelle, of just over 4,000 tons, bound from Dakar to Hamburg with a crew of thirty-eight. She was asking for help. At ten minutes past eleven the life-boat Charles Dibdin, Civil Service No. 2 was launched. The night was very dark, with rain squalls and mist. A gale was blowing from the south- west. The sea was very rough, the tide one hour before high water. The life-boat made for the South Goodwins, but just as she picked up the South Goodwin Lightvessel, about a mile away, she received a message by radio telephone that the Agen was six miles to the north-east. The gale was now blowing with violent gusts and there was a very steep confused sea on the sands. The life-boat altered course, travelling along the western edge of the sands, and at 12.30 was approximately where the message had said that she would find the steamer. The night was now clearer and it was obvious that the steamer was not there. The coxswain returned on his course, but keeping closer to the sands, and when he had gone two miles he saw a red flare on his port beam. The flare was rather less than a mile away on the other, or eastern, side of the sands. It was then 1.30. On that western side, where the life-boat was, the seas were so heavy that it was impossible to attempt to cross the sands, and the coxswain decided to go round their southern end and up the eastern side, a distance of four miles, instead of the short mile across them. Broken in Two Parts It was 2.45 in the morning when at last the life-boat reached the Agen and by the light of her searchlight saw that she was broken in two parts. About thirty feet of water was between them. The seas were breaking right over them. The crew were all on the forward part. The Agen lay close to the remains of three other wrecks, only from 400 to 500 yards away. From all three the Walmer life-boat had rescued the crews, 115 men in all, during the past six years. Close to her on the north and west were sand-banks with very little water on them. The tide was ebbing fast. In the darkness, with the heavy confused seas, the swift tide, and the jagged metal of the broken hull of the Agen, it was very dangerous to attempt to get along- side. The coxswain did attempt it,

Broken in Two PartsIt was 2.45 in the morning when at

last the life-boat reached the Agenand by the light of her searchlightsaw that she was broken in two parts.About thirty feet of water was betweenthem. The seas were breaking rightover them. The crew were all on theforward part.

several times, but failed. He thendecided to wait for the conditions toimprove.

Sometime after three o'clock thewind veered to the westward andblew less fiercely, and at 6.15 thecoxswain made another attempt. Itwas now low tide; there was only afoot of water on the banks to thenorth and west, and they gave thelife-boat some shelter; but it wasstill dark and the seas still heavy.The coxswain took the life-boat

returned to Walmer. She arrived ata quarter to eight and landed them.Then she refuelled, put out again, andwas back at the Agen at a quarter tonine. The captain waved the life-boat away several times, but at last hewas persuaded to leave his ship. Thetide was making again, and this timethe coxswain approached the wreckfrom the other side, with the tidebehind him. It was running like amill race and swept the life-boatthrough the gap, but the coxswain

through the thirty feet between thetwo halves of the wreck, brought heralongside the forward half, and bycontinuous manoeuvring with hisengines held her there while thirty-seven of the Frenchmen slid downropes into her. One missed her, andwas injured, but the crew hauled himaboard. The captain was still onboard. He would not leave his ship.The life-boat had to come out sternfirst, for ahead of her, where one ofthe two sand-banks lay, was notenough water. Then three times shewent in again for the captain, buteach time he refused.

Tide Running Like a Mill RaceThe rescued men were suffering from

their long exposure and the life-boat

brought her alongside and took off thereluctant captain. At 10.15 shereached Walmer again. She had thenbeen out for eleven hours.

RewardsIt had been a difficult and hazardous

service, a severe test both of courageand seamanship, and the Institutionmade the following awards:

The French Life-boat Society award-ed silver gilt medals to the coxswain,second coxswain and motor mechanic,silver medals to the other six membersof the crew, and a diploma to be placedin the boathouse.

A Night Rescue by TorbayAT 9.20 on the night of the 30th ofJanuary, 1952, the Brixham coast-guard saw flashing signals outsideTorbay about four miles north-eastof Berry Head. They were unread-able, but they seemed to come from avessel which was making no headway.A whole gale was blowing from thesouth - south - west, with frequentsqualls of rain and sleet, which madevisibility very poor, and a very heavysea was running. The coastguardrang up the Torbay life-boat stationand the life-boat George Shee waslaunched at 9.45. She went to theposition which the coastguard hadgiven and by her radio telephone gotin touch with the motor vesselSpeciality which was also searching,more to seaward. Neither found any-thing.

The coxswain of the life-boat con-tinued the search, first to the south-east, then to the north-east in whichdirection the floodtide was setting,and an hour and a half after thelife-boat had set out he saw a lightflashing ahead. He made for it. Thelight might well have been on shore,but he held boldly on, close to a leeshore, in shallow water, with a heavy

breaking sea, and a full gale behindhim.

There, off the mouth of the Exe,about a mile from Straight Point, ashe estimated, and eight miles north-east of the position at which the lighthad first been seen, he found a tugriding to a sea-anchor. She was theRoyal Engineer's tug Trieste. Shehad gone from Brixham to South-ampton, and while she was on her wayback her main steam-pipe had burst.

Yawing ViolentlyThe spray from the breaking seas

was blowing to a height of six feet,and the tug was yawing violently. Atthe moment she was lying with herbows to the north-west, and thecoxswain steered to come alongsideher starboard, or lee side, but sheyawed again and lay with her bowspointing north-east. At that the cox-swain went astern, a heavy sea break-ing over the life-boat's stern as he didso, and then took the life-boat along-side the tug's port side, which • wasnow her lee side. As he held herthere his crew dragged four menaboard. Two more men were on thetug's deck but they went below. The

coxswain took the life-boat astern andas he once more ran her alongside, thetwo men were bringing up five menfrom below who were prostrate withsea-sickness. All seven were helpedor lifted into the life-boat, and shemade for Brixham. It was then justafter half-past eleven. She now hadto fight her way against the gale andit was two o'clock next morningbefore she made Brixham Harbour.The Trieste did not go ashore. Shewas saved from it by the strong streamrunning out from the River Exe, andlater was picked up by another tugand towed to Dartmouth.

COXSWAIN HENRY O. THOMAS hadacted with great courage and handledthe life-boat very skilfully, and theInstitution awarded him the bronze

medal for gallantry and a copy of thevote inscribed on vellum.

To DAVID W. O. THOMAS, theassistant motor mechanic and sonof the coxswain, it awarded itsthanks inscribed on vellum in recog-nition of his skill in navigating thelife-boat.

To the coxswain, the assistant motormechanic and each of the other sixmembers of the crew it made a specialreward of £3 in addition to the rewardon the ordinary scale of £1 15s.Ordinary rewards to the crew andlaunchers, £13 4s.; additional rewards,£24; total rewards, £37 4s. TheRoyal Engineers sent a donation fromregimental funds and then a seconddonation from special collections madewithin the regiment.

The Life-boat Service in 1951THERE were fewer launches of life-boats in 1951 than in 1950, and fewerlives were rescued, but it was a year ofoutstanding gallantry, and more thantwice as many medals were won, twosilver and eight bronze. They werewon by coxswains, motor mechanicsand life-boatmen at Porthdinllaen,Caernarvonshire; St. Helier, Jersey;Longhope, Orkneys; Flamborough,Yorkshire; Margate, Kent; Dover,Kent; Selsey, Sussex, and Scarborough,Yorkshire.

350 Lives RescuedThe number of launches to the

rescue was 568, which was 71 fewerthan the record number in a year ofpeace, and in the course of thoselaunches life-boats rescued 350 lives.

Besides those 350 lives rescued bylife-boats, 56 were rescued by shore-boats for which the rescuers wererewarded by the Institution, makinga grand total for the year of 406 livesrescued.

Life-boats also saved, or helped tosave, 53 boats and ships and helped239 more in various ways.

From its foundation on the 4th ofMarch, 1824, to the end of 1951 theInstitution has given rewards for ser-vices by life-boats and shore-boats

which resulted in the rescue of 77,602lives.

Before, During and After the WarIn the six years before the war,

life-boats went out to the rescue onan average 411 times a year. In thesix years of war, life-boats went outto the rescue on an average 664 timesa year. In the six and a half yearssince the war ended, the yearly averagehas been 596.

Loss of LifeOne life-boatman was lost at sea,

the bowman of the Scarborough life-boat. He boarded a ship in distressand, after her crew had been rescued,was crushed between the life-boat andthe ship when attempting to jumpinto the life-boat again. The Institu-tion has pensioned his widow on thesame scale as for the widows of lead-ing ratings of the Navy who are killedin action, and has also pensioned hisinvalid son.

Service to Foreign VesselsLife-boats went out to the help of

81 ships and one aeroplane belongingto 13 foreign countries, and rescuedfrom them 116 lives. Thirty-two, ofthe ships were from France, 15 from

the Netherlands, seven from Sweden,six from Norway, four from theUnited States, including the aero-plane; four from Belgium, four fromGermany, three from Spain, two fromDenmark, two from Turkey; one eachfrom Italy, Panama and Costa Rica.

Besides the lives rescued, life-boatssaved or helped to save six of theseships, and landed three sick men andan injured man from other foreignships.

Of the eight services for which theInstitution awarded medals for gallan-try, five were to foreign ships, amongthem the service by the Scarboroughlife-boat in which the bowman losthis life.

Eleven new life-boats were com-

pleted during the year and sent tothe coast.

Expenditure and IncomeThe total expenditure was £717,507,

which was £95,970 less than the recordexpenditure of 1950.

The total income was £655,860,which was £86,002 less than therecord income of 1950.

The sum spent on the constructionand repair of life-boats was £288,848.The total payment to coxswains,crews and launchers—to those engagedin the actual work of rescue—-was£114,446, an increase of £2,393 on1950. The full statement of accountswill be published in the next numberof The Life-boat.

The Bravest Deeds of 1951THE Maud Smith reward, in memoryof John, Seventh Earl of Hardwicke,for the bravest act of life-saving ofthe year by a life-boatman wasawarded to Alfred R. Wilson, ofMargate, for going on board the yachtGirlanda in the darkness of the earlyhours of the 2nd of September, in aheavy sea, to secure a tow rope andcut away her anchors, so that thelife-boat was able to tow her andthe two men on board into harbour.He had already won the Institu-

tion's bronze medal for this gallant act.The reward given by Mrs. Porter,

of Felixstowe, for the bravest deed ofthe year by a life-boatman was award-ed to Edward A. Slaughter, themotor mechanic at Flamborough, forswimming from the life-boat in a heavybreaking swell, among rocks, on theafternoon of the 15th of May, to thehelp of a boy who had fallen from thetop of the cliffs. He had alreadywon the Institution's bronze medalfor this gallant act.

The Queen: Patron of the InstitutionHER MAJESTY THE QUEEN has beengraciously pleased to give her patron-age to the Institution. Her MajestyQueen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother,

who has been a patron since 1937, andHer Majesty Queen Mary, who hasbeen a patron since 1911, continueto be patrons.

Sir Godfrey Baring, Bt., K.B.E.IN the Queen's first Birthday HonoursSir Godfrey Baring, Bt., the chairmanof the Committee of Management, wasappointed a Knight of the Order ofthe British Empire, in recognition of

his public services as "Chairman ofthe Isle of Wight County Council forover fifty years and chairman of theRoyal National Life-boat Institutionfor twenty-seven years."

The Annual MeetingTHE annual meeting was held at theCentral Hall, Westminster, on the24th of April, 1952, with Sir GodfreyBaring, Bt., chairman of the Com-mittee of Management, in the chair.

H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent, Presi-dent of the Institution, presented themedals for gallantry and other awards,and gave her presidential address.

Her Royal Highness was accom-panied by her daughter, the PrincessAlexandra, who was attending herfirst public meeting.

The Right Hon. the ViscountWaverley, G.C.B., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E.,proposed, and the Right Hon. AlfredBarnes, M.P., seconded, the resolutionof gratitude to the coxswains andcrews of the life-boats, the honoraryofficers and committees of the stations,and the honorary officers and membersof the financial branches and theLadies' Life-boat Guild. Captain GuyD. Fanshawe, R.N., a vice-president ofthe Institution proposed and Com-mander Oscar Henderson, C.V.O.,C.B.E., D.S.O., R.N., a member ofthe Committee of Management,seconded the vote of thanks to theDuchess of Kent.

Supporting the Duchess on theplatform were the Mayor and Mayoressof Westminster, the Chairman of theLondon County Council, the LordMayor and Lady Mayoress of Norwich,Winifred Duchess of Portland, a vice-patron of the Ladies' Life-boat Guild,the Mayors and Mayoresses of overforty other boroughs, representativesof the Ministry of Transport, theCoastguard, the Civil Service Life-boatFund, the Shipwrecked MarinersSociety, King George's Fund forSailors, vice-president and honorarylife-governors of the Institution,donors of life-boats or their represen-tatives, members of the Committeeof Management and members of theCentral London Women's Committee.

The Chairman's AddressOur first thought as we meet today to

review the work of our 128th year, must bethat two months ago, we lost, by the deathof pur beloved Sovereign, the Patron of theInstitution. His Majesty carried on thetradition of over a century that the reigning

Sovereign should be the head of the Life-boatService, and he was the seventh to be ourPatron. We are deeply grateful for his nameand support during the sixteen momentousyears of his reign, as we are to your RoyalHighness for the more intimate help ofthe Royal Family which we enjoy by yourconstant, generous and personal interest inall our work.

We are delighted to welcome this afternoon,for the first time, your Royal Highness'sdaughter, and we hope that we shall oftenhave the pleasure of seeing the PrincessAlexandra at our meetings.

In the records of the Institution there is along and impressive list of the names of thosemen, of all parties, who have spoken at thesemeetings. We are happy and proud to addtwo more distinguished names to that listtoday, Lord Waverley and Mr. Alfred Barnes.

No man in the country has a more brilliantor more varied record of great public servicesthan Lord Waverley. I will only remind youthat, as head of the Port of London Authority,he, like ourselves, is deeply concerned withthe work of the Mercantile Marine.

Mr. Barnes was, for five years, the Ministerof Transport, and we gratefully remember hisinterest in our work during those years.With that Ministry the Institution has closeand very friendly relations.

There are other busy men on this platformwho have very kindly taken this afternoonfrom their own work, in order, by theirpresence, to pay their tribute to the Life-boat Service—Lord Mayors, Mayors andChairmen of nearly fifty cities, towns,boroughs and district councils. We are verygrateful to them.

You have before you the report andaccounts of last year. It was a year of verygallant deeds, but what I want to emphasiseis that although our expenditure was nearly£100,000 less than the year before, it stillexceeded the income. I must say againthat our gratitude to our workers and thepublic is accompanied by a very earnestrequest that an even greater measure ofpublic support may be forthcoming. I nowformally move the adoption of the reportand accounts for 1951. (Applause.)

adopted, and the President, vice-presidents,treasurer and other members of the Com-mittee of Management and the auditors wereelected.

The Duchess of KentThe stories of gallantry to which you have

just been listening bear witness to the out-standing courage of life-boatmen along our

shores during the past year. Together, theseexploits present a record of vigilance anddecision in the face of great hazards, whichit would be hard to equal, but which is upheldyear after year by the men of this magnificentservice.

I am always glad to recognise old friendswhose skill and daring have brought themto this platform before, and it has thereforegiven me much pleasure to present awardsto the coxswain and motor mechanic ofthe Walmer station—a station which, amongothers, I visited last year.

But there is one man who cannot be hereto receive the applause which he so rightlydeserves, and whose medal was won on aservice from Scarborough—a service fromwhich he never returned. I know that youwould wish me to express to his widow yourdeep sympathy, and your admiration of thebravery which cost him his life.

The sea is no respecter of persons, and asan island people we have given much thoughtand ingenuity to the task of combating itsfierceness and cruelty. Our livelihood hasdepended on the skill of our sailors, and theinspiration of our craftsmen, and it is onlyfitting that the craftsmen's skill should alsoreceive its tribute this afternoon, for we oweto them the improvements in design, andthe added security which, through theirtechnical innovations, they bring to ourlife-boats each year.

Foremost amongst these improvements isthe installation of diesel, in place of petrol,engines, and in future all life-boats will havediesel engines. Next in importance is thedesign of a new type of wireless set—equalto even the roughest seas—and by the endof the year the work will be finished ofequipping the fleet with it.

Behind the work of construction lies thenot less important task of raising funds. Ineed not emphasise what this means to theService, except to remind you that theLife-boat Institution has always been proudof its voluntary status, and that its greattraditions could not have been maintainedwithout the willing enthusiasm of its honoraryworkers; but I should like to take this oppor-tunity of thanking them for their workthroughout the year, and of sending a messageof good wishes to them, and to the men of thelife-boat fleet. (Applause.)

Presentation to the Princess AlexandraSir Godfrey Baring said:I hope your Royal Highness will allow

me, very irregularly, to break into theseproceedings in order to made a little presenta-tion. The Committee of Management areanxious to present a very small memento toPrincess Alexandra in remembrance of herfirst public meeting. We are deeply honouredthat the Princess has chosen the Life-boatInstitution for her first appearance on a publicplatform. The Princess has informed methat she has never been out in a life-boat.We must see that that is remedied beforevery long. The Princess will find it a veryexhilarating experience to go out in a life-boat, perhaps in a gale wind. (Applause.)

Lord WaverleyIt is my privilege this afternoon to propose

a resolution, which will be supported by myfriend, the Right Hon. Alfred Barnes. Iwill read the resolution in a moment, butbefore I do so I would venture to claim justa few minutes of your time whilst I tell yousomething about the work of this trulyremarkable Institution.

The outstanding fact about the work ofthe Life-boat Service today is that it isbusier than it has ever been in time of peace.Of course the busiest time in its whole history,as well as the most dangerous, was the sixyears of the war, 1939 to 1945. That wasto be expected. During those years its boatswent out on an average 664 times a year.In the six years before the war the averagewas 411. During the six years since thewar ended the average has fallen. Thatagain was to be expected. But it is still farabove the average before the war. It is infact 596. That is 185 more than before thewar, and only 68 less than during the war.One can see therefore that the service wasnever more needed than it is today.

Not only does the work go on and increase,but the dangers remain. They are alwaysthere, and when again and again life-boatmencome triumphantly through them it is veryeasy for the public to forget them. Lastyear, as you have heard, one life-boatmanlost his life. That only one life was lostin the rescue of 350 lives, in spite of theperils faced in a year of outstanding gallantry,is a very high tribute both to the quality ofthe boats and to the spirit of the men whoman them. (Applause.)

The Institution is rebuilding its fleet. HerRoyal Highness has told you something aboutthat. Its boats are more powerful; theyhave a wider range of action; they are betterequipped than ever before; and today 153motor life-boats are doing the work of 276pulling and sailing life-boats and four steamlife-boats which were stationed round thecoast forty-two years ago, when the firstof the motor life-boats was built. Thepulling and sailing life-boats of that timewere open boats. Today the larger life-boatshave a cabin below decks, a deck-cabin forthe rescued, and a wireless cabin. In placeof oars and sails they have an engine-roomwith two 60 horse-power or 40 horse-powerdiesel engines. To those who knew thelife-boats of fifty years ago the modern life-boats would not be recognisable. Yet in theessentials which make them both life-boats—•their lines, their construction, their aircaseswhich keep them afloat when damaged andmake them unsinkable—the life-boats todayand at the beginning of the century are thesame.

At the beginning of the century the Insti-tution could accept a gift of £1,000 and outof it not only build a life-boat but endow itin perpetuity. Today the smallest life-boatcosts £13,000. In the first year of thecentury the Institution spent in rewards,

pensions and other payments to its crewsand launchers—to those on the coast whodo the actual work of rescue—£25,000.Last year it spent £114,000. In the firstyear of the century its total cost was £111,000.Last year it was £717,000.

In spite of all the changes and developmentsin its work during the last fifty years, in factduring the century and a quarter since itwas founded, the Institution is today, likeits life-boats themselves, in essentials thesame as when it was founded. It is in 1952exactly as its founder planned it in 1823. Itis still a voluntary service. The greatmajority of the 2,000 men of its crews arevolunteers, rewarded for every occasion onwhich they go to sea in the life-boats, butearning their living in other ways, boundby no contract, risking their lives of theirown free will. It is administered by volun-tary committees, and the whole of its revenuecomes from voluntary gifts. It is a remark-able example of the enthusiasm, energy andadaptability of voluntary effort. Most re-markable of all, it has been left with theapproval of all parties to carry on an essen-tial national system. (Appl mse.)

This is a brief description of what I am sureyou will agree is a very remarkable service, anational service maintained on a voluntarybasis, something distinctively British ofwhich we have every reason to be proud. Ihave always maintained that such success aswe have had in the development of trulydemocratic institutions in this country—and we and those nations and States thatshare our traditions have a record of achieve-ment in this respect not parallelled anywhereelse in the world—is attributable to twocauses, our system of local self-governmentand our tradition of voluntary service. Ofthe latter you have here an outstandingexample. (Applause.)

The resolution is: " That this Meeting,fully recognising the important services ofthe Royal National Life-boat Institution, inits national work of life-saving, desires torecord its hearty appreciation of the gallantryof the Coxswains and Crews of the Institu-tion's life-boats, and its deep obligation tothe Local Committees, Honorary Secretaries,and Honorary Treasurers of all StationBranches, and to the Honorary Officersand hundreds of Voluntary Members of theFinancial Branches and of the Ladies' Life-boat Guild in the work of raising funds tomaintain the Service." express publicly my appreciation of life-boatcrews and of those people who have helpedto maintain this service. Lord Waverleywith whom I have been associated in manyother ways, with his remarkable gift ofinterpreting an institution or a service, hasplaced very vividly before this gathering,in the most dramatic way, the work and thecharacter, the spirit and the quality of ourLife-boat Institution. May I, instead ofquoting similar data, become the voice ofmany millions of citizens of this country

who may not be intimately and daily assoc-iated with it, but from time to time contactit in a more or less casual way, and thenrealise, as we often do, in this country, howdeeply entrenched in the instincts of everyone of us are certain traditional movementsthat at many times we are quite unconsciousof?

When I was Minister of Transport theother two complementary services, the Coast-guard and Trinity House, which are directlylinked with the department of the Life-boatService as more or less connected organisa-tions, were often before me, not in directadministration but because of the workwhich they were doing around our coasts.In other ways I have had the good fortuneto have a more direct citizen's contact withthe work of our life-boat crews, because Ihave the privilege of living right on the seacoast, on our Essex coast, and in the villagein which I live we have both a coastguardstation and a life-boat crew. I should liketo say, as one who has spent many years inpublic life and has experienced many thrillsfrom time to time, that I never experienceany thrill so much as I do when the rocketcalls the life-boat into action. It is a remark-able thing, I always feel, in a holiday centre,where thousands of people come from ourcrowded industrial cities to get relaxationand enjoyment by the sea, it is a remarkablething—and I have witnessed it and mingledwith them in the middle of the night whenthe life-boat has been called out—to seethem turn out of their beds in their thousandsto stand on the sea-shore and look out overthe blackness of the sea, and I have often•wondered what their thoughts might be.You can see them trying to follow that crew,appreciating the hazards and entering intothe spirit of this organisation.

That brings me to a note that has runthrough all the speeches here this afternoon,and it is that the quality and the spirit of thisorganisation rests essentially on its voluntarycharacter. (Applause.) It was often putto me when I was a Minister, ' Would it notbe better for the Life-boat Institution to belike the Coastguard and Trinity House, partof a State Department?' My emphaticanswer has always been ' Certainly not.'(Applause.) I am sure that a good deal ofthe quality of this spirit would depart withany change of that character, and I echofirmly and sincerely the views that LordWaverley has expressed on that point.There is too little voluntary work in oursocieties and in our systems today, and hereis an institution of this kind, which is oneof the proudest and, I think, one of thefinest examples we have of British volun-tarily, efficiently, economically organisedservices. We should very tenaciouslydefend and safeguard such an institution.(Applause.)

I join with Lord Waverley in hearty andsincere thanks and appreciation to thecoxswains and life-boat crews, the localcommittees, their officers, the Ladies' Life-boat Guild, in fact all who play their part inmaking this Institution a proud Britishpossession. (Applause.)

DURING December, 1951, life-boatswent out on service 35 times andrescued 15 lives.

ENGINE BROKEN DOWNHolyhead, Anglesey.—At 3.7 in the

morning of the 5th of December, 1951,the coastguard telephoned that awoman had reported that her husbandand two others had put out in thefishing boat Forward, of Beaumaris,at one o'clock the previous afternoon-and had not returned. The coast-guard had looked for them with thehelp of a searchlight, but had seennothing, and at 4.45 the life-boatSt. Cybi, Civil Service No. 9 waslaunched. A moderate west-south-west gale was blowing, with a roughsea running. The life-boat found thefishing boat with her engine brokendown, one mile east of the Mail PierLighthouse. She had anchored, butthe anchor was dragging. The life-boat towed her in and reached herstation at 6.45.—Rewards, £11 2s.

SCARBOROUGH BOWMAN KILLEDON SERVICE

Scarborough, Flamborough, and Brid-lington, Yorkshire.—On the 9th ofDecember, 1951, the Scarborough life-boat rescued the crew of ten of theDutch motor vessel Westkust, and theScarborough bowman lost his life.—Rewards, to FRANK DALTON, the bow-man, posthumously, and to COXSWAINJOHN N. SHEADER and THOMAS J.MAINPRIZE, the assistant motor mech-anic, bronze medals for gallantry; tocoxswain and crew, £88 Os. 6d.

FISHING NET FOULED PROPELLERAldeburgh, Suffolk At 12.22 in

the afternoon of the 9th of December,

1951, the coastguard telephoned thata local fishing boat was flying a distresssignal one and a half miles north-eastof Aldeburgh, and at 12.35 the No. 2life-boat Lucy Lavers was launched.The sea was slight, but a strongwesterly breeze was blowing. Thelife-boat found the Amy-Jim with acrew of three. Her net had fouledher propeller. The life-boat towedher to the shore, escorted in otherfishing boats, and then returned toher station, arriving at 1.30.—Rewards£29 13s. 6d.

EMPTY SMACK TOWED INClacton-on-Sea, Essex.—At 12.31 in

the afternoon of the 9th of December,1951, the coastguard telephoned thatthe West Mersea police had reported afishing boat drifting towards Colne,and at 12.48 the life-boat Edward Z.Dresden was launched. The sea wasrough, with a strong west-south-westbreeze blowing. The life-boat foundthe smack Iris, of Colchester, betweenthe Bar and Fairway Buoys, but no onewas on board. The life-boat towedher to Brightlingsea, arriving at 4.30,but the weather was too bad for herto be rehoused so she remained atBrightlingsea for the night and wastaken back to her station next morn-ing.—Property Salvage Case.

FIVE FISHING BOATS ESCORTED INWhitby, Yorkshire.—At 9.15 in the

morning of the 10th of December,1951, the coastguard reported that thelocal fishing vessel Pilot Me II wasapproaching the harbour. The seawas rough and a strong northerlywind was blowing. At 9.25 the No.1 life-boat Mary Ann Hepworth waslaunched, but the Pilot Me II did notattempt to cross the harbour bar andput to sea again. She approachedagain at 12.20 that afternoon, and thelife-boat escorted her in. She thenput out again, met the Success andProgress, escorted them in, and then

FISHING BOAT ON FIREWick, Caithness-shire.—At 11.32 in

the morning of the 13th of December,1951, the coastguard telephoned thata motor fishing boat had been reportedon fire off Skirza Head, and at 11.45the life-boat City of Edinburgh waslaunched. The sea was moderate,with a light south-westerly breezeblowing. The life-boat found that theboat was the Crest, of Wick, but thatthe fishing boat Echo had taken off hercrew of two. The life-boat took themon board, and arrived back at herstation at 3.30 that afternoon.—Rewards, £11 8s.

TWO BOYS ADRIFTMargate, Kent.—At 2.16 in the

afternoon of the 13th of December,1951, the coastguard telephoned thata motor boat, with two boys on board,appeared to have broken down and tobe drifting seawards. She was one anda half miles north-north-east of thepier. Just after 2.30 the life-boatNorth Foreland, Civil Service No. XIwas launched in a moderate sea witha moderate southerly breeze blowing.She found the local motor boatCrusader a quarter of a mile west ofEast Margate Buoy, towed her to theharbour, and reached her station againat 3.55.—Rewards, £9 16s.

FRENCH STEAMER AGROUNDRamsgate, Kent. — At 4.28 in the

afternoon of the 14th of December,1951, the coastguard telephoned thatthe North Goodwin Lightvessel hadwirelessed that a vessel appeared to beaground three miles south by west ofthe lightvessel, and at 4.38 the life-boatPrudential left her moorings, in amoderate sea with a light west-south-west breeze blowing. She found theS.S. President Emile Marcesche, ofLorient, with a crew of twenty-seven,on the north side of Kellet Gut. Shehad laid out a kedge anchor. Twolife-boatmen boarded her. The life-

boat then took soundings, and advisedthe master at what time to have hisengines ready to start. When thetime came he started them andthe steamer refloated. The life-boatguided her to navigable water, re-embarked the life-boatmen, and re-turned to her station, arriving at 12.33the next morning.—Property SalvageCase; Rewards, 16s.

A TWELVE-MILE TOWGalway Bay.—At 6.0 on the night

of the 14th of December, 1951, theCoast Live-saving Service telegraphedthat the trawler St. Kieran, of Kil-ronan, with a crew of four, had brokendown and was drifting, two and a halfmiles east of Sand Head, and at 6.20the life-boat K.E.C.F. left her moor-ings, in a slight swell with a moderatesouth-westerly breeze blowing. Shefound the trawler twelve miles eastof Kilronan, towed her to Kilronan,and reached her station again at10.15.—Rewards, £10 19s.

SWEDISH STEAMER ON THEGOODWINS

Walmer, Kent. — At 6.23 on thenight of the 21st of December, 1951, avessel was reported to be on theGoodwin Sands in Trinity Bay, andat 6.30 the life-boat Charles Dibdin,Civil Service No. 2, was launched.The weather was calm. She found theS.S. Noreg, of Gothenburg, with a crewof twenty-two, bound in ballast forBilbao, hard aground. When still ahundred yards from her she groundedherself, but when the tide rose she wentalongside and at the master's requestlaid out a kedge anchor. A tughelped to refloat her, and towed herto Goodwin Fork, but in casting offthe towing wire the Noreg's chiefofficer was seriously injured. Thelife-boat immediately fetched a doctorput him aboard the steamer, and thenbrought him and the injured manashore where an ambulance was wait-ing. It was then 7.30 the nextmorning.—Property Salvage Case.

1951, the coastguard telephoned thata report had been received from amotor vessel that a trawler was ashoreon Goat Island in Stornoway Harbour.The trawler later blew her siren, andat four o'clock the life-boat Williamand Harriot left her moorings, in aslight sea, with a moderate south-westerly breeze blowing, and foundthe trawler Lochpark, of Grimsby,with a crew of thirteen. The skipperasked the life-boat to stand by. Thisshe did, the coxswain lashing her tothe trawler, and just before high water,with the life-boat's help, the trawlerwas refloated. The life-boat returnedto her station at 1.45 that afternoon.—Property Salvage Case.

ANOTHER FISHING BOAT AGROUNDBuckle, Banffshlre.—At 3.10 in the

afternoon of the 27th of December,1951, the coastguard telephoned thata fishing boat was ashore half a milenorth-west of the Covesea Lighthouse,and at 3.40 the life-boat Glencoe,Glasgow was launched with the har-bour master in charge. The sea waschoppy, with a light south-easterlybreeze blowing. The life-boat foundthe fishing boat Cloud, of Hopeman,with a crew of two. She was not inimmediate danger, but the life-boatstood by her until she refloated andwas taken in tow by another fishingvessel. She then returned to herstation arriving at 9.30 that night.—Rewards, £16 15s.

TRAWLER LEAKINGEyemouth, Berwickshire. — At 4.15

in the afternoon of the 27th of Decem-ber, 1951, the fishing vessel Dougals,which was in the harbour, reportedby wireless that she had picked up amessage from the steam trawler OldenTimes, of North Shields, that she hadsprung a leak twelve miles east bynorth of Eyemouth. The life-boatClara and Emily Baruiell was launchedon service for the first time at 4.28.A southerly gale was blowing, with avery heavy sea. The life-boat foundthe trawler with her pumps just aboutkeeping pace with the leak, andescorted her to Redburgh Bay, reach-ing her station again at 9.25 thatnight.—Rewards, £17 10s. 6d.

LIFE-BOAT CARRIES THE CHRIST-MAS MAIL

Mallaig, Inverness-shire.—At 11.0 inthe morning of the 28th of December,1951, the Post Office asked if the life-boat would take the Christmas mail tothe islands of Eigg, Rhum and Cannaas the regular steamer had not made itsweekly call owing to the bad weather.At 11.30 the life-boat Sir Arthur Roseleft her moorings, in a rough sea witha strong north-westerly wind blowing.She took not only the mail but storesto the islands and reached her stationagain at 9.0 that night.—Rewards,£19 5s.

BELGIAN VESSEL DRIFTING IN AGALE

Weymouth, Dorset.—At 5.25 in theevening of the 28th of December, 1951,the master of the motor vessel Fran-cine, of Antwerp, who had comeashore to get stores, reported that theFrancine was drifting ashore a hundredyards off Weymouth promenade, andat 5.40 the life-boat William and ClaraRyland, with Mr. Kenneth H. MooringAldridge, the honorary secretary, onboard, left her moorings, taking themaster of the Francine with her. Awhole southerly gale was blowing, witha very rough sea. The life-boat foundthe Francine off Preston Beach. Shegot under way without help, and thelife-boat put her master on board.She then escorted her to PortlandHarbour, arriving back at her stationat 7.15 that night.—Rewards, £7 8s.

MOTOR BARGE BROKEN DOWN IN AROUGH SEA

Caister, Norfolk.—At 10.0 on thenight of the 28th of December, 1951,the life-boat motor mechanic heard avessel blowing V-signals on her siren,meaning "I require assistance", andfive minutes later the Great Yarmouthcoastguard reported a red flare offCaister Point. At 10.40 the life-boatJose Neville was launched with thesecond coxswain in charge, in a roughsea with a strong south-easterly breezeblowing, and found the motor bargeOlive May, of London, about two milesto the south-east. She was anchored,with her engine broken down, but theanchor was dragging and the skipper

asked for a tug. The life-boat wire-lessed for one, and put two life-boat-men on board the barge. She thenstood by while they helped the barge'screw to start their winch engine, andthe tug took her in tow. The life-boat escorted her to Great YarmouthHarbour, and then returned to herstation arriving at 8.5 the next morn-ing.—Property Salvage Case.

OVER THE SANDS OF THE WYRE

Fleetwood, Lancashire.—At 9.0 inthe morning of the 30th of December,1951, the Formby coastguard tele-phoned that he was keeping underobservation a coaster on the east sideof the River Wyre one and a half milesfrom the coastguard station. Whenhe saw that she was driving over thePilling Sands the life-boat AnnLetitia Russell was launched. It wasthen 10.15. A fresh westerly gale wasblowing with a very rough sea.The life-boat found the s.s. FordFisher, of Barrow, with a crew of eightnear No. 6 Buoy. The life-boat stoodby her while she was driven right overthe sands, the coxswain advising herhow to clear them. When she reacheddeeper water the life-boat put a piloton board, and he took her to dock,accompanied by the life-boat, whichthen returned to her station at 3.0that afternoon. The owners made agift to the funds of the Institution.—Rewards, £21 6s.

WIRELESS STATION DAMAGED

Valentla, Co. Kerry. — During badweather in December, 1951, theValentia Radio Station was damagedand the Department of Posts andTelegraphs decided to establish anemergency station at Cork. On the30th it asked the life-boat station if itwould bring off three wireless operatorsfrom the Valentia Station as theweather was too bad for ferry boatsto put out, and at 4.45 in the afternoonthe life-boat A.E.D. left her moorings.She brought the operators and theirequipment to the mainland and reachedher station again at 6.0 that night.—Rewards, £6 8s.

TWO LIVES LOST

Tenby, Pembrokeshire, and TheMumbles, Glamorganshire.—At 10.45on the night of the 26th of December,1951, the Tenby coastguard telephonedthe Tenby life-boat station that theHelwick Lightvessel had reported thatan ex-R.A.F. boat, which was towinga motor fishing vessel, appeared to bedrifting westwards half a mile south-west of the lightvessel, but that shehad made no distress signals. Thelife-boatmen assembled. At 2.30 inthe morning of the 27th the coast-guard reported that a red flare hadbeen seen about three miles north byeast of the Rhossili coastguard station,and at 2.45 the Tenby life-boat JohnR. Webb, was launched, with the hon-orary secretary, Mr. D. B. Bancroft, onboard. A strong south - south - westgale was blowing, with a very roughsea and heavy squalls ot rain and hail.The life-boat searched Rhossili Bayand Burry Holms, but found nothingand her compass was damaged by theseas.

The life-boat then decided to re-turn to her station, and informed theTenby coastguard by radio telephone.At 7.10 he informed the coastguardat The Mumbles who passed on themessage to the life-boat station at

The Mumbles, and at 7.38 the life-boat William Gammon—Manchesterand District XXX was launched to thehelp of the Tenby life-boat, but thehelp was not needed. The Tenbyboat reached her station at 8.30 thatmorning, after a very rough trip, andThe Mumbles life-boat reached hersan hour later, but the seas were tooheavy for her to be rehoused, so shemade for Swansea and returned to herstation next morning.

The Tenby life-boat replaced hercompass, refuelled and put out againat 9.45, but owing to the very heavyseas she gave up the search andreturned to Tenby again at eleveno'clock. Later that day the wreckageof the ex-R.A.F. boat and the motorfishing vessel were found inside the barof Llanelly Harbour. There had beentwo men on board. morning of the 4th of January, 1952,the Kerry County Council asked if thelife-boat would take food and medicalsupplies to the Great Blasket Islandas no other boat had been able to callthere for a month, and at 12.15 thatafternoon the life-boat A.E.D. left hermoorings. She had on board thehonorary secretary, Mr. K. O'Driscoll,and his wife, Dr. O'Driscoll, besides thestores. A north-westerly gale wasblowing with a very rough sea running.The life-boat landed the stores andreached her station again at 7.30 thatnight. No expense to the Institution.—Rewards, £21 6*.

TAKING DOCTORS TO ANOPERATION

Sennen Cove, Cornwall.—At 9.22 inthe morning of the 6th of January,

1952, the Scilly Islands medical officertelephoned that a patient at St. Mary'sneeded an immediate operation and,owing to fog, the surgeon and his staffcould not fly from the mainland. Heasked for the life-boat, and at 11.20the Susan Ashley was launched withthree doctors and a sister from theWest Cornwall Hospital, Penzance, onboard. She took them to St. Mary's,in a slight swell and a light westerlybreeze, with patches of fog, andarrived back at her station at 8.30 thatnight. The patient's life was savedand the medical officer thanked thelife-boatmen.—Rewards, £28 16*.

LIFE-BO AT, FRIGATE AND NAVALTUG TO THE RESCUE

Portrush, Co. Antrim.—At 5.42 inthe morning of the 8th of January,1952, the coastguard telephoned thatthe fishing boat Maeve, of Killybegs,had wirelessed that she was driftingashore at Inistrahull Island and neededhelp, and at 5.50 the life-boat LadyScott, Civil Service No. 4, was launched.The sea was very choppy, with a verystrong westerly breeze blowing. Thelife-boat found the Maeve, with a crewof four, six miles east of the island.Her engine had broken down. Thelife-boat took her in tow, but a frigatearrived and took over the tow. Thefrigate's tow line parted several timesand a naval tug which had put out fromDerry, then towed the Maeve to Derry.The life-boat reached her station againat 4.20 that afternoon.—Rewards,£26 2*. 6d.

YACHT AND LAUNCH IN DISTRESSAngle, Pembrokeshire.—At 7.10 in

the morning of the 9th of .January,1952, the Tenby coastguard telephonedthat a vessel was in distress fifteenmiles south-south-west of Smalls, butthat a steamer was standing by her.Then the steamer wirelessed that shecould not lower her boats, as the seawas very rough, with a moderatewest-north-west gale blowing, and thelife-boat Elizabeth Elson was launchedat 7.45. She found the motor launchSolent Swan twenty-five miles south-west of St. Ann's Head. She had beentowing the yacht Oriana, from Fal-mouth to Cork, but in the gale had beencompelled to cut her adrift after

DRIFTING IN THE ATLANTICThe Lizard, Cadgwith, and Falmouth,

Cornwall.—The S.S. Flying Enterprise,of New York, had been drifting help-lessly in the Atlantic Ocean for overa week, with only her captain on board.She was listing very heavily. On the5th of January, 1952, the tug Turmoilput her mate on board the steamer,to help the captain and then took thesteamer in tow, making for Falmouthin very bad weather. The tow ropeparted on the 9th, about forty milessouth-south-east of The Lizard, andat 1.15 in the morning of the 10th theowners of the tug asked for a lifeboat.At 2.40 the Lizard life-boat Duke ofYork, was launched, with Mr. F. G.Chapman, the honorary secretary, onboard. A strong west-north-west galewas then blowing, with a rough sea.The life-boat reached the FlyingEnterprise at eight in the morning andfound her lying on her side, but thecaptain and the mate of the tug wouldnot leave her. An American destroyer,the tug Turmoil and other tugs werestanding by her and the life-boatcircled her closely for four hours. Atnoon, as her fuel was getting low, andas the Flying Enterprise did notappear to be in imminent danger ofsinking, she made for her station.

The Lizard station informed theCadgwith station, and at 12.20 theCadgwith life-boat Guide of Dunkirkwas launched to take over the duty ofthe Lizard life-boat, but before shearrived on the scene, she learnt thatthe Flying Enterprise had sunk atfour in the afternoon and that hercaptain, and the mate of the Turmoil,had been rescued by the Turmoil.

Meanwhile the Falmouth life-boatCrawford and Constance Conybeare hadbeen launched at three in the afternoonwith the intention of relieving the"Lizard life-boat, but shortly after fouro'clock she was recalled when thenews reached her station that theFlying Enterprise had sunk.

The Lizard life-boat, which hadstarted to return to her station at

noon, altered course for Falmouth, onaccount of the bad weather, and arrivedthere at 7.50 that night, the 10th.She returned to her station the nextmorning. The Cadgwith life-boatarrived back at her station at 9.15 onthe night of the 10th, and theFalmouth life-boat arrived at herstation at 4.30 in the afternoon.—Rewards, The Lizard, £76 5*. 6d.;Cadgwith, £34 1*.; Falmouth, £7.

ALL NIGHT FIXING A TOWDover, Kent.—At 10.10 on the night

of the 13th of January, 1952, theEastern Harbour Arm Signal Stationreported that the tanker Sovac Radiant,of Panama, had gone aground in FanBay, and at 10.30 the life-boat SouthernAfrica left her moorings. A strongsouth-south-west gale was blowing,with a very rough sea. The life-boatfound the tanker near South Foreland,stood by her, and early next morningpassed a line to her from a tug.Heavy seas were breaking over thetanker and the line parted. Then thelife-boat passed a line across fromanother tug, but this also carried away.She passed a third line, and this held.Other tugs arrived. The life-boattook soundings, guided the tugs closeto the tanker, passed more tow lines,which were made fast, and stood bywhile the tugs started to pull, but amotor pilot boat June Rose fouled herpropeller and when day broke it wasseen that she was lying on top of someof the towing lines. The life-boattowed her clear, berthed her in theCamber at Dover at 9.5, and returnedto the tanker. She stood by untilshe refloated at noon and then returnedto her station, arriving at 1.30 in theafternoon. — Service to the SovacRadiant, Property Salvage Case; re-wards for the service to the JuneRose, £6.

the life-boat coxswain reported that avessel was aground on the West Scar,and at 3.45 the life-boat City of Leedswas launched in a moderate westerlybreeze, with a moderate sea running.She found the S.S. Taxiarchis, of Syra,Greece, with a crew of thirty-five.The coxswain boarded her and thelife-boat then stood by while tugstried unsuccessfully to refloat her inthe ebbing tide. As there was noimmediate danger to life the life-boatthen returned to her station arrivingat 6.55 that night. The Teesmouthlife-boat crew assembled, but were notneeded.—-Rewards, £15 8s.

SAND BOATS IN DISTRESS IN AGALE

Broughty Ferry, Angus.—At 3.5 inthe morning of the 15th of January,1952, a resident of Newport telephonedthat a sand boat had been drivenashore off Newport, and at 3.30 the life-boat Mono, was launched. A westerlygale was blowing, with a very roughsea. The life-boat found the sand boatDavid P., of Leith, with a crew offour, between Newport and TayportHigh Light, anchored very close in-shore. She was waterlogged and theseas were breaking right over her.Her crew beached her and the life-boatrescued them. She then received awireless message that another boathad rescued two men from the sandboat Harfat, but that a third man wasmissing. She landed the crew of theDavid P. at Dundee and then searchedfor the missing man until eight o'clockthe next morning. She found nothingand returned to Dundee at 8.15. Thereshe remained for some hours owing tothe bad weather, and arrived back ather station at 2.45 that afternoon.The owner of the David P. made agift to the Institution.—Rewards,£12 13*. 6d.

DUTCH VESSEL WITH HEAVY LISTLowestoft, Suffolk.—At 3.57 in the

afternoon of the 17th of January,1952, the coastguard telephoned thata Dutch motor vessel was in distresstwelve miles east-south-east of Lowes-toft. • She was listing heavily. At 4.15the life-boat Michael Stephens left hermoorings. A north-westerly gale wasblowing, with a heavy sea and squalls

of sleet. The life-boat found that themotor vessel was the Seaham, ofRotterdam, of 399 tons, laden withcoal. Her cargo had shifted, andfour of her crew of eight had abandonedher, but their boat had been swamped.The Trinity House vessel Warden wasstanding by, and had rescued one ofthe four, but the other three had beenswept away. The Warden wirelessedthe life-boat that the Seaham's threeengineers wanted to abandon ship.

The life-boat attempted to get along-side, but the Seaham's leeside wasawash, her davits were rolling into thesea, it was difficult and dangerous toapproach her. It was not until thefourth attempt, and with her wirelessmast carried away, that the life-boatsucceeded, and rescued the threeengineers. The master refused toleave his ship, and the life-boat wentin search of the three missing men,while the Warden continued to standby the Seaham. She searched for twohours, but could not find them. Themaster now signalled that he wished toabandon ship, so the life-boat wentalongside, took him off, and made forher station, where she arrived at 12.15the next morning. The owners of theSeaham made gifts to the life-boatmenand to the Institution.—Rewards,£16 6*.

AGROUND ON THE TRAININGWALL

Teesmouth, Yorkshire.—At 10.25 onthe night of the 17th of January,1952, the South Gare Lighthousekeeper telephoned that a ship hadgone aground on the training wall inthe mouth of the River Tees, and ateleven o'clock the life-boat John andLucy Cordingley was launched. Astrong north-westerly gale was blow-ing, with a rough sea. The life-boatfound the motor vessel Futurity, ofLondon, with a crew of six. Shestood by her until she refloated, butthe Futurity was then blown acrossthe wall and over the Brand Sands.After a time her anchors held her, andwhen the tide rose sufficiently shewas able to make for the main channeland went on her way to Middlesbrough.The life-boat then went to Middles-brough, as the weather was too bad forher to be hauled up her slipway at her

GERMAN CADET TRAINING SHIPIN DISTRESS

Margate, Kent, Walton and Frinton,Essex, and Ramsgate, Kent.—At 1.33 inthe morning of the 18th of January,1952, the Margate coastguard telephon-ed the Margate life-boat station thatthe North Foreland Radio Station hadreported a message from the four-masted barque Pamir, of Germany, acadet training ship. She was atanchor twenty-nine miles east-north-east of North Foreland and needed atug. A fresh north-westerly gale wasblowing, with a very rough sea andheavy snow squalls. At 2.12 thelife-boat North Foreland, Civil ServiceNo. XI was launched. The Pamir,which was making heavy weather,wirelessed to the life-boat asking herto take off forty-nine boys. The life-boat then wirelessed the Ramsgatecoastguard asking that the Waltonand Frinton life-boat should come outand stand by the vessel while she tookthe boys on board. The Walton-on-the-Naze coastguard telephoned thismessage to the life-boat station at 6.30,and at 7.10 the life-boat E.M.E.D.,left her moorings.

Meanwhile the Margate life-boat hadasked the Pamir, by wireless, to burnflares, but in the heavy snow squallsthe life-boat missed her. It was notuntil nine o'clock that she found her,with the help of a trawler's directionfinder, but the master of the Pamirhailed the life-boat that he haddecided to keep the boys on board.The Walton and Frinton life-boatarrived at 11.40 and the two life-boatsstood by. Then, about 3.30 in theafternoon a tug arrived, but theweather was so heavy that it was notpossible to pass across a tow-rope.Shortly after 3.30, as the weather wasmoderating, it was agreed that theWalton and Frinton life-boat shouldreturn to her station while the Margatelife-boat continued to stand by.

At 6.15 she saw the Pamir movequickly in a southerly direction andthought that her cable had parted.The life-boat wirelessed this news toRamsgate and at 7.30 the Ramsgate

life-boat Prudential left her moorings.Meanwhile the Margate life-boat andthe tug chased the barque and, usingher searchlight, the life-boat saw thatthe ship had set storm canvas andwas resuming her voyage. This newswas wirelessed ashore and the Rams-gate life-boat was recalled, arrivingback at her station at 7.26. TheWalton and Frinton life-boat arrivedat her station at ten o'clock thatnight and the Margate life-boat madefor Ramsgate, arriving at 12.10 on themorning of the 19th. EIGHT FISHING BOATS ESCORTEDINTO HARBOUR

Scarborough, Yorkshire. — On theafternoon of the 20th of January, 1952,a strong and increasing north-easterlywind was blowing, with a heavy sea,and at 2.20 the life-boat E.C.J.R.was launched to escort in the return-ing fishing boats. She met the Con-stance, Pilot Me II, Betty, Premier,Hilda II, Rachel, Betty Sheader andCourage, gave life-belts to two ofthem, escorted them all to the harbour,and returned to her station at 4.15.—Rewards, £13 Is.

RESCUE BOAT HERSELF INDISTRESS

Humber, Yorkshire.—At 9.45 on thenight of the 21st of January, 1952, theSpurn Point coastguard telephonedthat the S.S. Don, of Goole, which wasat anchor half a mile west of the MiddleLight Buoy, had reported that hersecond officer had fallen overboard at9.15, that she had lowered a boat withthree men to search for him, and thatthe strong tide had swept the boat away.At 10.5 the life-boat Edward Z. Dresden,on temporary duty at the station, waslaunched. She did not find the secondofficer, but another steamer at anchorsignalled that the boat had made fastto her. The life-boat took the threemen on board, towed their boat backto the Don, and returned to her stationat one o'clock next morning. The

Norfolk.—At 1.30 in the afternoon ofthe 31st of January, 1952, the policereported that the S.S. Capitol, ofLondon, wanted to land a sick manand would be off the harbour aboutfour o'clock. She arrived at 4.30 andat 5.45 the life-boat Louise Stephenswas launched in the charge of thesecond coxswain, with the policedoctor on board, in a moderate seawith a west-south-west breeze. Thedoctor decided not to land the man,as the vessel was making for London.The life-boat brought the doctorashore again, and returned to herstation at seven o'clock that night.—•Rewards, £10 16s.

ADRIFT IN A GALENew Quay, and Aberystwyth, Cardigan-

shire.—At 9.23 in the morning of the9th of January, 1952, the Fishguardcoastguard telephoned the New Quaylife-boat station that the tankerAudacity, of London, was in difficultieswith a broken propeller sixteen and ahalf miles north-east by north ofBardsey Light and was drifting to thesouth-east, that the Trinity Housevessel Argus was standing by her andthat a tug had put out to take her intow. All day the New Quay stationkept in touch with the coastguard.Meanwhile the Strumble Head coast-guard had informed the Aberystwythlife-boat station at 10.40, and at 11.30the life-boatmen assembled. Theystood by on shore all day.

At 7.5 that night the New Quaycoastguard telephoned the New Quaylife-boat station that the Audacity haddrifted to a position seventeen milesnorth-west of New Quay Head. At7.35 he reported that she was in dis-tress, and at 7.50 the life-boat St.Albans was launched. A fresh north-westerly gale was blowing with arough sea. The life-boat found thatthe motor vessel Alacrity had takenthe Audacity in tow, so she returnedto her station, arriving at 4.30 in themorning of the 10th.

The Aberystwyth life-boatmen hadremained on duty until 9.30 at night,but had not launched as the NewQuay life-boat had put out. At 10.30in the morning of the 10th the Aberyst-wyth life-boat station learned fromthe Tenby coastguard that the Alacrityhad taken the Audacity in tow, butthat the tow-rope had parted. At11.25 the news came that the tughad secured a wire cable, and for thefourth time had the Audacity in tow.They were making steady progressforty-one miles north-east of StrumbleHead, which was about four milessouth-east of Aberystwyth Buoy, butshould the tow part again they wouldbe in a serious position, so at 11.50the life-boat Aguila Wren was launch-ed. She wirelessed the vessels, butthey replied that her services were notneeded and she returned to her station

A LONDON BARGE TOWED INClacton-on-Sea, Essex.—At 2.26 in

the afternoon of the 4th of February,1952, the life-boat Sir Godfrey Baringwas launched on exercise in a roughsea with a moderate north-north-westbreeze blowing. At three o'clock shewas four miles south-by-west of Clac-ton and there found the motor bargeDelce, of London, with a crew of three.She was drifting, with her enginebroken down. At the request of herskipper the life-boat stood by. TheDelce then anchored, but the anchordid not hold her, and the skipper askedthe life-boat to take her in tow. Thisshe did, brought the Delce to Bright-lingsea, and then brought her engineerto Clacton. She reached her stationagain at 7.15 that night.—PropertySalvage Case.

ANOTHER INJURED MAN LANDEDGreat Yarmouth and Gorleston,

Norfolk.—At 1.36 in the afternoon ofthe 5th of February, 1952, the Gorles-ton coastguard telephoned that theS.S. Poole Channel, of London, hadwirelessed that she was making forGreat Yarmouth with an injured man.She expected to arrive at five o'clockand asked that the man might belanded. The life-boat Louise Stephenswas launched at 4.45 in charge of thesecond coxswain, with a doctor onboard. A light west-north-west breezewas blowing, with a slight swell. Thelife-boat met the steamer off theharbour, took on board her boatswain,who had injured his collar-bone,wirelessed for an ambulance to meether at her station, and arrived thereagain at 5.23.—Rewards, £14 8s. 6d.

THIRTY-THREE HOURS AT SEATynemouth, and Culler-coats, Northum-

berland.—At 11.43 in the morning ofthe 9th of February, 1952, the coast-guard telephoned that the motor vesselHans Hoth, of Hamburg, of 370 tons,with a crew of nine, had wirelessedthat she was listing and needed a life-boat. She was fifty-six miles east-north-east of the Tyne. At 12.15 thatafternoon the Tynemouth life-boatTynesider was launched in a rough seawith a strong northerly wind blowing.The tug Hendon also put out and passedthe life-boat, but the weather gotworse, the seas-increased, and she re-duced speed. The life-boat maintain-ed full speed, overtook the tug andpassed her. Guided by an aeroplaneand a flare burnt by the Hans Hoth,she found the motor vessel eighty-eightmiles north-north-east of the Tyne.It was then 12.38 in the morning ofthe 10th. The master said that thelist was less than it had been and askedthe life-boat to stand by. This shedid, and two hours later the tugarrived. The tug had already arrangedwith the Hans Hoth by wireless to takeher in tow at daybreak, so at 2.30in the morning the life-boat made forher station.

As she was approaching Tynemouthat nine o'clock that night, a wirelessmessage came from the tug that thecrew of the Hans Hoth wished toabandon ship and had asked the life-boat to return. She replied that shewould put into Tynemouth to refueland return immediately to the HansHoth's help, but shortly afterwardsshe picked up a message from theCullercoats station to the tug whichsaid that the Cullercoats life-boat waslaunching. The Tynemouth life-boatcontinued on her way and moored at9.55. She had then been out for33 hours 40 minutes.

Meanwhile the Cullercoats life-boatIsaac and Mary Bolton had launched at9.35, in a moderate breeze, with a swell,but when she was fourteen miles outa message came from the tug that sheherself had taken off the Hans Moth'screw, and she made for North Shieldswhere she arrived at 12.15 next morn-ing the llth. There her crew lefther, as the weather would have madeit difficult to rehouse her, and returned

to Cullercoats. Just after nine o'clocka message came through the Tyne-mouth coastguard that the tug nowwanted a life-boat to take over therescued crew from her, so that sheherself could try to salve the HansHoth. At that the Cullercoats menreturned to North Shields and thelife-boat put out again at 9.20. -Thetug and the Hans Hoth were now onlytwenty miles from the Tyne, but thesea was rough, and the life-boatarrived to find only the tug. TheHans Hoth had foundered. She re-turned to North Shields, arriving attwo in the afternoon. FALLEN OVER THE CLIFFNew Quay, Cardiganshire.—At 9.0

in the morning of the I Oth of February,1952, the police telephoned that a manhad been missing from his home sincefive o'clock the previous evening andwas thought to have fallen over a cliff.Search parties had gone out but hadnot found him, and at ten o'clock thelife-boat St. Allans was launched in asmooth sea with a light westerlybreeze blowing. She found the man'sbody on Coybal beach, two miles westof New Quay, brought it to the harbourand reached her station again at 12.15that afternoon.—Rewards, £13 12s. 6d.

TWO GIRLS ON A ROCKArbroath, Angus.—At 7.22 on the

night of the 17th of February, 1952,the coastguard telephoned that twogirls were marooned on a rock east ofAuchmithie, about four miles northof Arbroath, and at 7.33 the life-boatRobert Lindsay was launched. Theweather was fine, with a calm sea.Using her searchlight, the life-boatfound the two girls. With them werefive men who had tried to get themashore. AGROUND IN A FOGCampbeltown, Argyllshire.—At 6.25

in the morning of the 28th of February,1952, a life-boatman picked up on hiswireless set a message from the motorfishing boat Pride o' the Clyde, ofTarbert, that she was aground atSkipness Point and needed help. At6.47 the life-boat City of Glasgow lefther moorings. The sea was slight,and the east-south-east breeze waslight, but there was fog. The life-boatfound the fishing boat, with six onboard, and towed her off. The fishingboat then made for Tarbert, and thelife-boat returned to her station,arriving at 12.45 that afternoon.—Rewards, £16 Vs. 6d.

ON THE ROCKS IN A FOGAnstruther, Fifeshire.—At 10.17 in

the morning of the 28th of February,1952, the coastguard telephoned that afishing boat had gone ashore at PathHead, and at 10.40 the life-boat Jamesand Ruby Jackson was launched. The'sea was calm but there was a densefog. The life-boat found the motorfishing boat A.J.J. & M., of Pitten-weem, with a crew of four, on the rocks,and towed her clear. The fishing boatthen made for Pittenweem under herown power, and the life-boat returnedto her station, arriving at 12.20 thatafternoon.—Rewards, £12 165. 6d.

LIFE-BOAT ACTS AS RUDDERSt. Helier, Jersey.—At 6.5 in the

morning of the 29th of February, 1952,the harbourmaster reported that theS.S. Lyntre, of Jersey, had wirelessedthat she had hit rocks off NoirmontPoint, and at 6.25 the life-boatElizabeth Rippon left her moorings.The sea was smooth. The life-boatfound the Lyntre, laden with coal,drifting in St. Aubin's Bay. She had

damaged her propeller and rudder, wasout of control and was making water.The harbour tug put out, and thelife-boat and a pilot boat took thesteamer in tow, but they could nothold her. The Lyntre then anchoredand waited for the tug, which took herin tow. The skipper's wife and ship'spapers were first transferred to thelife-boat, and the life-boat made a linefast to the stern of the steamer andhelped to steer her. She was berthedin St. Helier and the life-boat reachedher station again at 8.40.—PropertySalvage Case.

LIFE-BOATMEN DIG IN THE SANDCaister, Norfolk.—At ten o'clock in

the morning of the 29th of February,1952, the coastguard reported that avessel had gone aground off Waxham,and at 10.15 the life-boat Jose Nevillewas launched. The sea was calm,with a fresh north-easterly breezeblowing, but there was fog. The life-boat found the motor vessel Serenityof London, with a crew of nine, onWaxham beach. The Serenity's boattried to pass a line from her to a tug,but the wind and tide prevented her,so the life-boat passed it. The tidewas ebbing and the Serenity could notbe moved until the next high tide.While waiting for it the life-boatmendug away a large amount of sand roundthe Serenity. As the tide rose she waspulled off the beach and made forGreat Yarmouth under her own power.The life-boat returned to her stationarriving at ten o'clock that night. Life-boat Broadcasts in 1951THE principal life-boat broadcast in1951 was in November, when "TheLife-boat Story" was told in a seriesScience and Life in the programmeLondon Calling Asia. Colonel A. D.Burnett Brown, the secretary, Com-mander T. G. Michelmore, R.N.R., thechief inspector, Mr. R. A. Oakley, thesurveyor of life-boats, a recording ofex-Coxswain Henry Blogg of Cromer,Coxswain G. Tart of Dungeness, Mrs.Tart and the Dungeness motormechanic all took part in it.

There were three broadcasts toschools. In June, the story of thelife-boat service was told "for thefourteens". It included a talk withCoxswain Douglas Kirkaldie of Rams-gate. In the same month theprogramme "The Life-boats" which

was given to Scottish schools inOctober, 1947, was repeated withrevisions. In November in NewsCommentary for Schools there was ageneral talk about the Life-boat Ser-vice, with a description of its boatsand of the service by the Walmerlife-boat to the Captain Andrew, whichhad taken place four days before, onthe night of the 24th of November.

In Children's Hour in the northernregional programme, there was a talkin August about the New Brightonlife-boat, and another talk in Septem-ber about the first life-boat built atSouth Shields in 1789.

The first life-boat broadcast ofthe year was in January, in theWelsh programme, about the Moelfrestation.

A Life-boat ChristmasON the evening of Sunday the 23rd ofDecember, last, a choir of over twentyvoices, and a harmonium, gatheredon the deck and in the cockpit of theEastbourne life-boat Beryl Tollemachein her boat-house, and over the life-boat's radio telephone sang carols forhalf an hour to the men on the RoyalSovereign Lightship, seven miles outat sea.

At the end of the concert the directorof the choir asked the men of the light-ship "to give them a carol." Theyreplied that they were "a little shy,"but they sent their thanks.

The Weymouth life-boat tookChristmas gifts to the Shambles Light-ship, Selsey to the Owers Lightvessel,and Clacton to the Mid Barrow andBarrow Lightships in the Thames.

The Clacton life-boat crew were them-selves presented with hampers by thechairman of the council from thepeople of Clacton, and were entertainedto dinner. B

The Mallaig life-boat carried theChristmas mail, and stores, to theislands of Eigg, Rhum and Canna, ina rough sea, as the regular steamerhad been prevented by the weatherfrom making her weekly call.

The Forest Row branch of theInstitution arranged a carol partywhich collected £52 3s. Id. in thecourse of a week's singing. Thewhole sum went to the funds of thebranch, as the expenses, £5 10*., werepaid by a worker for the branch,an officer of the Guards home on leavefrom Malaya.

Captain William James Oxley, M.B.E.CAPTAIN WILLIAM JAMES OXLEY, whohas been honorary secretary of theWalton and Frinton life-boat stationfor twenty-three years, and who has

been awarded the Institution's in-scribed binoculars, has been appointeda Member of the Order of the BritishEmpire for his life-boat work.

A Scottish Life-boat Visits NottinghamTHE new Aberdeen life-boat HiltonBriggs, of the 52-feet Barnett (Strom-ness) type, which left the building yardat Cowes on the 17th of August oflast year, broke her journey by sea toher station, to travel up the RiverTrent from Hull and visit Nottingham.She was manned by Aberdeen life-boatmen with the northern districtinspector in charge. She arrived onthe 23rd of August and was welcomedat Trent Bridge by the Sheriff, theLord Mayor and a crowd of 3,000people. She stayed for three days,and on the afternoon of the last dayshe gave a demonstration of life savingby breeches buoy. The life-boat wasin mid-stream between Trent Bridge

and the Suspension Bridge, and theline-throwing pistol was fired at theSuspension Bridge, which representedthe wrecked ship. The City FireBrigade threw up a 30-feet curtain ofwater to represent a rain storm;Nottingham boys played the part ofthe rescued; and the district inspectorgave his orders, and described therescue, through the life-boat's loud-hailer. The Sheriff entertained thecrew and showed them over theCouncil House.

The life-boat left Nottingham onthe 26th; resumed her journey bysea from the Humber on the 28th;and arrived at Aberdeen two dayslater.

Capt. R. L. Hamer, D.S.O., R.N.CAPTAIN RICHARD LLOYD HAMER,D.S.O., R.N., who died on the 16th ofDecember, 1951, at the age of 67, wasfor twenty years in the service ofthe Institution. When he came to itin 1925, he had served for many years,before and during the war of 1914 to191*, in destroyers, had been flaglieutenant to the commander-in-chiefon the Cape Station, and flag lieutenantand flag commander to the com-mander-in-chief on the East IndiesStation, and for two years the navalassistant secretary to the Committeeof Imperial Defence. He wasappointed district inspector of life-boats for the southern district, wherehe served until 1929, when he went to

the northern district. In the followingyear, he became deputy chief inspectorof life-boats. Nine years later, onthe outbreak of war in September,1939, he was recalled to the Navy,at the age of fifty-five. He servedthroughout the war, winning the D.S.O.for "courage and resource in success-ful attacks on enemy submarines."When the war ended he was 61. Hedid not return to the Institution, andretired at the end of 1945. TheCommittee of Management sent hima letter expressing their "high appre-ciation" of his services to the Institu-tion, and their congratulations on "hisdistinguished service" with the Navyduring the war.

Centenary of the Danish Life-boat ServiceTHE Danish Life-boat Service com-pleted its first hundred years on March26th, 1952. In these hundred yearsit has rescued 12,414 lives at thecost of 59 lives of its life-boatmen.

The Institution sent it the followingtelegram:

LIEUT.-COL. THE EARL OF HOME diedon the llth of July, 1951, at the age of77. He had been a vice-president ofthe Institution since 1923. He waselected chairman of the executivecommittee of the Scottish Life-boat"Council at its inception in 1945, andserved on the committee until 1948,when he resigned.

MR. WALTER RIGGS, M.B.E., OFALDEBURGH

MR. WALTER RIGGS, M.B.E., M.I.E.E.,who died on the 10th of November,1951, at the aged of 74, had givenmany years to the Life-boat Service.From 1924 until his death he was thehonorary secretary of the station atAldeburgh, Suffolk. He became amember of the Committee of Manage-ment in September, 1932, and servedon the boat and construction com-mittees, the establishment committee,the wreck and rewards committee, thegeneral purposes and publicity com-mittee, and various sub-committees.In March, 1951, he resigned from theCommittee of Management, on accountof ill health, but he continued to behonorary secretary of the Aldeburghstation until his death. It was inrecognition of his devoted work forthe Life-boat Service that he wasmade a Member of the Order of theBritish Empire in 1941.

SIR HAROLD PINK, OFPORTSMOUTH

SIR HAROLD PINK, J.P., a freemanand alderman of the City of Ports-mouth, three times its Mayor, and

once its Lord Mayor, died on the 3rd ofJanuary at the age of 93. As Mayorfor the third time, in 1917 and 1918, hewas president of the Portsmouthbranch of the Institution, and in 1919he became its chairman. In 1934,when he was Lord Mayor, he becameits president as well as chairman, andfrom July, 1940, until the end of thewar he acted also as its honorarysecretary. He was chairman untilhis death. In 1939 he was awardedthe Institution's gold badge, givenonly for long and distinguished honor-ary services. In 1942 he was appointedan honorary life-governor, the highesthonour which the Institution cangive to an honorary worker. In1944 he was appointed a vice-presidentof the Institution. It is an appoint-ment made by the Committee ofManagement only when they feel thatsomething is still due to an honoraryworker—even after the bestowal ofthe highest honour, and it has beenmade for that reason only once before.Sir Harold Pink left £200 to theInstitution.

ADMIRAL SIR ARTHUR DUFF, K.C.B.ADMIRAL SIR ARTHUR ALLEN MORISONDUFF, K.C.B., who died on the 5th ofApril, 1952, at the age of 77, becamean ex-officio member of the Commit-tee of Management in 1927, when hewas appointed Admiral CommandingReserves, and remained on the Com-mittee when that command ended in1929. From 1929 until 1946 he wasa member of the boat committee, andits vice-chairman for fifteen years. In1950 he was appointed a vice-presidentof the Institution in recognition of hisservices to it.

Portrait on the CoverTHE portrait on the cover is of Holden'N. Sheader, who has been the motormechanic at the Scarborough stationfor 28 years. On the 9th of December,1951, he won the Institution's thanks

on vellum for his part in the serviceto the Dutch motor vessel Westkust,in which three bronze medals werewon, and the bowman lost hislife.

Five Honorary WorkersMRS. EDITH MA.NBY

MRS. EDITH MANBY of Codsall, Staf-fordshire, died in February, 1951, atthe age of nearly 86. For almost fiftyyears she had been an active life-boatworker in the Codsall area, and forsome years was president of theCodsall district branch. In April,1935, Mrs. Manby began the work ofknitting woollen scarf helmets for allthe life-boat crews of the Institution.She had the help of 491 knitters andsubscribers, and the work cost £1,250,of which she herself contributed over£100. The work was finished on NewYear's Day, 1936. Mrs. Manby andher party had then knitted 1,525helmets, and the wool used weighed aquarter of a ton. In 1937, she wasawarded the Institution's gold badgefor her distinguished honorary service.She gave up working for the Life-boatService, on account of her age, only afew years before her death-

Mrs. Manby was a relative of Cap-tain G. W. Manby who over a centuryago was awarded the gold medal of theInstitution for the life-saving appara-tus which he invented for rescuingshipwrecked people from the shore.

SIR CHARLES McRAE

SIR CHARLES McRAE, Sheriff of Londonin 1936-37, and a member of the CoalExchange, died on the 19th of June,1951, at the age of 76. He was formany years an active member of theInstitution's City of London Branch.He joined its committee in 1927, waschairman from 1935 to 1946, and con-tinued to serve on the committee untilhis death. In 1947 he was appointedan honorary life-governor of the Insti-tution, the highest honour which itcan give to an honorary worker.

CAPTAIN KELGWIN, OFSHOREHAM

CAPTAIN C. T. KELGWIN, R.D.,R.N.R. the honorary secretary of the

Shoreham Harbour station, died inOctober, 1951, at the age of 74. Hehad been honorary secretary sinceDecember, 1936, and in 1949 wasawarded the Institution's inscribedbinoculars, in gratitude for hisservices.

LIEUT.-COLONEL E. V. HUGO, OFRICHMOND

LIEUT. - COLONEL EDWARD VICTORHUGO, who died on Christmas Eve,1951, at the age of 86, had devotedhimself for many years to the work ofthe Richmond and Kew branch ofthe Institution. He became honorarytreasurer in 1929, and besides doingthe treasurer's work he was indefatig-able in organising the appeals ofthe branch. He held the post for 21years, and in 1950 became the presi-dent of the branch. In 1951 he wasawarded the gold badge, given onlyfor long and distinguished honoraryservice.

MR. WILLIAM STANTON, OFBOULMER

MR. WILLIAM STANTON, of Boulmer,who died on the 3rd of January, 1952,at the age of 55, came of a familywhich has played a long and activepart in the history of the Boulmerstation. At one time Stantons andStephensons made up the greater partof the crew. Mr. William Stanton be-came the honorary secretary in 1935,and in 1948 he was awarded theInstitution's inscribed binoculars ingratitude for his services. He oftenwent out in the life-boat as one of thecrew, and last year, very soon afterleaving hospital, where he had hadan operation, he took command whenthe coxswain and most of the crewwere at sea, collected a scratch crewand stayed out for two hours search-ing for an aeroplane. His son is themotor mechanic of the Boulmerlife-boat.
