“There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics”

An example of this is in Rihanna’s – only girl in the world, when through out the video she is the only ‘girl’ we can see in the visuals ; therefore the lyrics are being illustrated in the video.

“There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music”

An example of this is David Guetta – Titanium; where in the video the scene changes correlate with the beat of the song. Also, in one scene where the boy is riding his bike, he speeds up at the same time of the music, this illustrating or even amplifying the music.

“style and iconography”

Music videos usually contain certain stereotypical styles to fit the music's genre. “For example in Katy Perry's – last Friday night” video, the genre is commercial pop music, so the video is of a party, fitting in with the pop genre.

“record companies will demand a lot of close-ups on the main artist or vocalist”

Record companies use close ups of the artists in their videos as a branding method; to display the artist clearly making them known.

“there are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos, or to films and TV texts”

In some of the videos we watch, we see references too recognisable symbols/icons. For example; in the justice – D.A.N.C.E video we see multiple intertextual references..
