First Suite in E-Flat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gustav Holst1. Chaconne2. Intermezzo3. March

British composers have produced several exceptionally fine works for the concert band. Of all these, the"Suite in E-flat" by Gustav Holst (1874-1934) is generally regarded as the cornerstone. Written in 1909 it isone of the few band originals that has been transcribed for symphony orchestra. The opening theme of the"Chaconne" is repeated 15 times with slight variations. The "Intermezzo" is based on a variation of the"Chaconne" theme, presented first in an agitated style and then in a cantabile mood. The two styles alternatethroughout the movement. The two themes of the "March", one dynamic and the other lyrical, are also derivedfrom the "Chaconne" theme.

Armenian Dances - Part 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alfred Reed3. Lorva Horovel (Songs of Lori)

Armenian Dances, Parts 1 and 2, constitute a four-movement suite based on authentic Armenian folk songsfrom the collected works of Gomidas Vartabed (1869-1935), the founder of Armenian classical music. Part 2contains the second, third, and fourth movements of this suite and is built upon three Armenian folk songs. The fourth and final movement is "Lorva Horovel" and is based on a plow song from the district of Lori. Thesong is connected with the farmer and his physical and spiritual being during his work. It is the immediateresult of his labor, with his pleas to the oxen and his exclamations while plowing. These expressions resoundthroughout the free flowing melody, rhythmic and intervallic structure of this beautiful song. Part 2 ofArmenian Dances was premiered by the University of Illinois Symphonic Band with Dr. Harry Begianconducting on April 4, 1976.

Semper Fidelis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John Philip SousaThis march is considered by many musicians to be Sousa's most musical and inspired march. Dedicated to theU.S. Marine Corps, and subsequently adopted as its official march, Sousa once described his feelingsconcerning its creation: "I wrote Semper Fidelis one night while in tears, after my comrades of the MarineCorps had sung their famous hymn at Quantico."
