Winter from "The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), arr. Brian SlawsonThe Four Seasons (Italian: Le quattro stagioni) is a set of four violin concerti by Antonio Vivaldi. Composed around 1720, The Four Seasons is Vivaldi's best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces in the Baroque music repertoire. The concerti were first published in 1725 as part of a set of twelve concerti, Vivaldi's Op.8, entitled Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention). Tonight's performance of Winter was arranged by Brian Slawson for percussion ensemble assigning the solo violin voice to marimba. Slawson first came to light as a Grammy award winning arranger/performer with his debut album "Bach on Wood" (1985).

Festive Overture - Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75), arr. Tim Parker/Michael FarisFestive Overture was composed for the celebration of the 37th anniversary of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and was premiered on November 6, 1954 by the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra in Moscow. The work is a conservative example of Shostakovich's compositional style that does not represent the more progressive nature of his abilities for which he became known. His symphonies and string quartets—each numbering 15—are now considered some of the finest examples of music from the Twentieth Century. Festive Overture along with the Symphony No. 5 are the most performed works of Dmitri Shostakovich.

Song to the Moon from "Rusalka" by Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904), arr. Nathan DaughtrySong to the Moon is from the opera Rusalka, Op. 114, by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. The libretto was written by the poet Jaroslav Kvapil(1868–1950) and based on the fairy tales of Karel Jaromír Erben and Božena Němcová, Rusalka. The plot contains elements which also appear in The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen and in Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, and has been described as a "sad, modern fairy tale." The juxtaposition of love and death was a common theme in late Romantic literature and music with these themes reaching their apex in the operas of Richard Wagner who was also a major influence for Dvorak.

Rebonds by Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001)Rebonds is a composition for solo percussion composed between 1987 and 1989 and, together with Psappha, is one of two compositions for solo percussion by Xenakis. The composition is in two autonomous movements, named A and B. The first movement uses only membranophones with two bongos, three tom-toms, and two bass drums. The second movement, of which excerpts are being performed this evening, uses two bongos, one conga drum, one tom-tom, bass drum, and a set of five wood blocks. Rebonds has been well received by critics and musicians alike. Jacques Longchamp called it an "immense abstract ritual, a suite of movements and of hammerings without any folkloristic "contamination", pure music full of marvellously efflorescent rhythms, going beyond drama and tempest. A new masterpiece."

Riverdance by Bill Whalen (b. 1950), arr. Gary FryRiverdance is a theatrical show consisting mainly of traditional Irish music and dance. It originated as an interval performance during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. Later that year, the BBC commissioned a repeat performance of the act for the 1994 Royal Variety Show, when it was introduced on stage. Upon its debut in the United States, Riverdance saw enormous success eventually touring and performing for millions of people around the world. Tonight's suite consists of excerpts from the production with music composed by Bill Whalen.

Ladue Percussion is a component of the Ladue School District band program. This focused percussion curriculum was initiated by James Waechter - former director of bands-in 1991 with the addition of Michael Faris to the instrumental music staff faculty. Since that time, Ladue Percussion has been at the forefront of percussion performance practices at the middle and high school levels. The high school ensemble has appeared in venues around the country from Kansas City to North Carolina, and Chicago to New Orleans. They have represented the district regionally through performances at the Missouri Music Educators’ Association (MMEA) Convention as well as the area’s premiere concert venue - The Touhill Performing Arts Center.

The percussion ensembles are best known for their annual “Night of Percussion” concerts featuring the district’s middle school and high school percussion students as well as noted solo artists that have included Dave Samuels (Spyro Gyra, The Caribbean Jazz Project), Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons), Rick Holmes and Tom Stubbs (St. Louis Symphony), Michael Israelivitch (St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Chicago Symphony), Kiyomi Kikuchi (Malaysian Philharmonic), and noted St. Louis freelance percussionists Kevin Gianino, Matt Henry, Chris Treloar, Erin Elstner, and Kim Shelley.

In 2005, Ladue received national recognition as a Grammy Select program and in 2006 Ladue Percussion inaugurated the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s first annual “Explosions” Percussion Festival. On three separate occasions - 2001, 2009 and 2013--Ladue Percussion was invited to perform at the annual Missouri Music Educators Association convention held in January at Osage Beach.
