APRIL 204/20/1968 - The emergen-cy operating center which will serve middle Arm-strong County communi-ties is expected to go into operation July 15. Kittan-ning councilman Gerald Shuster and county Civil Defense director Bernie Bowser announced the tar-get date to the Kittanning-Ford City Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon. The project will be fi-nanced initially through support of Kittanning and Ford City Boroughs which will pay 85 cents per cap-ita and Manor Township, which will pay 40 cents per capita per year. Twen-ty-one other sub-divisions will contribute 20 cents per capita. Shuster said a $7,000 allocation for pur-chase of equipment will come from the county, but the county is appar-ently not permitted under existing laws to contribute toward the operating sup-port of the project. Space will be provided in a room at the courthouse origi-nally designed for that use. The cost of operation is expected to be in ex-cess of $13, 000 per year. Efforts to establish the system were started two years ago by firemen and Civil Defense volunteers. 4/20/1968 - Officers were elected during a meeting of Rayburn Township Par-ent-Teacher Association held at Spaces Corners Elementary School. They are: Mrs. Fulmer Karns, president; Mrs. John Ti-tus, vice-president; Mrs. James Mechling, second
vice-president; Mrs. Da-vid Brink, secretary; and Mrs. Larry Crytzer, trea-surer. The sixth grade, taught by Mrs. Richard Brown, won the room award for having the most parents present. 4/20/1968 - It was an-nounced Pamela Painter and Arnold Toy, both se-niors at Worthington High School, will participate in the Regional Band con-cert at Franklin Area High School on April 25-26. A clarinet player, Pamela is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Dan Painter of Garin Street, Worthington. Ar-nold is a trombone player and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles A. Toy of Worthington RD2. He will leave for basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC. He will then join the 158th Army Band at Fort Knox, KY. 4/20/1953 - Shirley McAfoose, valedictorian and Patricia McComas, salutatorian, were an-nounced as the top honor students in the 1953
graduating class at Kit-tanning High School. 4/20/1948 - Madi-lyn Long, five-year-old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. D. H. Long of 106 Northern Avenue, West Kittanning, was being examined in Armstrong County Memorial Hos-pital for injuries suf-fered when she was hit by a car on Orr Avenue. 4/20/1948 - The body of S-Sgt. Robert H. Shaf-fer, who met death while serving with the United States Army during the invasion of Southern France on August 15, 1944, arrived by train in Kittanning and was taken to the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Shaffer. 4/20/1943 - Early dis-missal of junior and se-nior high school pupils was started in Kittan-ning this week to enable student victory garden-ers to devote more time to their vegetable plots. 4/20/1938 - “Jackie”, four-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Dave Phillips of New Bethlehem, died at the family home in the Bittner apartments, 45 minutes after falling 30 feet from a banister leading to the second floor porch of his home. 4/20/1938 - “The Front Page” satirical drama was presented by the Kittan-ning Players in the Kit-tanning High School Au-ditorium.
