Kittanning Hose Company #1 Hosts Annual Paradeby Jonathan Weaver

Floats, marching bands and plenty of costumes filled the streets of Kittanning last night during the 85th annual Hallow-een Parade. Beginning outside the Kit-tanning Hose, Hook and Ladder Co. #1 fire hall on South Jeffer-son Street, children and parents showed off their Halloween costumes during the parade, which featured clowns, Smurfs and ‘Cat in the Hat with Thing #1 and Thing #2’ among dozens of others. The parade was led off by the Kittanning Senior High School marching band, who also dressed up in their own costumes for the occasion. In-between were fire crews, cos-tumed participants, before the Kittanning Junior High School marching band brought up the rear of the pack. East Franklin Township, Kit-tanning, Applewold Borough and Rayburn Township fire crews also rode along in the parade. More than $400 in prizes was awarded to participants and families. Some winning entries are featured here.

The ‘Best Overall’ prize of $45 was awarded to ‘Popeye’s Crew’ (The Mechling Family from Kit-tanning. The group consisted of several cousins and other relatives, who also rode in a float dur-ing the parade. They hope to donate their win-nings to a local non-profit just like they did in the past when donating to Orphans of the Storm or the Kittanning Public Library.

“The Smurfs” won $40 for their hand-made cos-tumes and spirit during the parade. The group of 11 is made up of Jamie Ditty’s two kids, nieces and nephews.

The Wrighter Family, consisting of Logan, Seth, Emma and ‘Mee-Ma’ won the $20 prize for their rendition of the ‘Cat and the Hat.’
