It is hard to believe that May is already here and in just over a month we will be finished with the school year. I want to take this time to thank all of the people who have made this a great year and my final of six years in a row here. First of all I want to thank the awesome board I had this year! As President I am only as good as the board that supports me and I was very fortunate to have a very supportive board that took the initiative with their committees, projects and events and got the job done without needing much help from me! I also want to thank Mrs. Johnson and her fabulous staff who have been so supportive of us throughout the year. Finally, I want to thank all of you who have volunteered in any way for Randall this year. The PTSA and school could not offer everything we do for our students without volunteers to help. I want to thank all of the people who participated in, volunteered and attended the Upcycle Art Night on April 11! It was a wonderful evening and all of the participants showed such creativity. We had many parents rave about the event and are looking forward to it next year, which I am sure will be even bigger and better now that so many people have heard about it! Look for more information and pictures in this newsletter. If you currently have a Newsome High School student or have an 8th grader that will be attending NHS next year please consider getting involved with the PTSA there. I am currently on that board and will be on it again next year. There are many positions or even committees that you can be on and they all take even less time and commitment than ones at the elementary or middle school level. Being on the PTSA is a great way to get involved with the school and know what is going on and that is harder and harder to do as our children get older. Please contact me for any information regarding the NHS PTSA. Please join us Thursday, May 2nd at 4:30PM for our last General Meeting in the cafeteria before conference night. We will be voting in the new slate of officers for the 2013-2014 PTSA Executive Committee. I am very impressed with the officers and chair people we have for next year! It makes me very comfortable to leave Randall in their hands! The Book Fair will also be open that evening in the Media Center. So come to the meeting and then browse for summer reading books for your students. I want to let you all know that I am a bit sad to leave Randall and have had a great six years serving on this board. I hope you all have a safe, fun and relaxing summer and look forward to seeing some of you around Newsome High School next year! FUNDRAISING RECAPJill Rintoul

It is hard to believe the school year is coming to an end! We had a very successful year with fundraising at Ran-

dall. Thanks to so many volunteers who helped with MIXED BAGS, Reindeer-grams, Script, T-shirt sales, Hawking, Spirit Nights, Student directories, and the donation drive.

It takes a village to make this all happen in a school the size of Randall and I want each of you to know how much your time and effort is appreciated. If your child is off to high school next year, good luck and if your child is still at Randall next year, I hope you will consider helping us out again either as a donor, volunteer, or hopefully both!

STAFF APPRECIATION APPRECIATES YOUR HELP!Donna Blatell

CLIPPING BOX TOPS? CARRY ON!Shannon Derby

Yes, the end of the school year is upon us, and with one month left, we are still out if full force to collect Box Tops. In March, you all turned in 2,224 valid Box Tops. That’s over $100 for Randall’s budget in 2013/2014. Mr. Legge’s homeroom class was the winner of that month’s contest.

We have one more homeroom Box Tops contest left at the end of May (5/23). So, search your cup-boards and scan your groceries for any valid Box Tops. Valid at this point means they cannot expire before 11/1/13. Check those expiration dates, cut them out, and send those Box Tops in!

On a final note, students home during the summer means more and more food to buy at the grocery store. Randall Middle School will continue the Box Tops for Education program next school year. PLEASE scan all that extra food for Box Tops. Continue to clip and save your Box Tops and submit them in August. Remember, just a bit of your time earns your child’s school free money to enhance their classroom curriculum and PTSA sponsored events.

RANDALL STUDENT SCORES BIG AT PTA REFLECTIONS’ STATE COMPETITION! Kathy McAdam

Congratulations to Austin Huffman, recipient of the Special Artist Award of Excel- lence for Photography at the state level of the Reflections contest. The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students. The

Reflections Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected theme, while increasing community awareness on the importance of the arts in education.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS AT THE UPCYCLED ART & FASHION SHOW!Cynthia Atkins

Everyone had a great time at the PTSA Upcycled Art and Fashion Show. A big crowd turned out to see the show, have pizza from the Formaggio's Food Truck and participate in the Mini Art Expo. We were very lucky to have local businesses, Art Monkey, Pish Posh and Haddon & Co. at the event teaching students various craft projects like making pinch pots out of clay and hair bows out of men's neckties and we would like to thank these businesses for their generous support of our school.

The upcycled art was amazing and included everything from a life size robot to a miniature toilet. The upcycled fashion outfits were made of many inter-esting recycled items such as trash bags, music CDs and even a Twister game board. The show was very entertaining as well thanks to our MC, Randall student, Zachary Willis who volunteered to emcee the show and did a fabulous job.

All of the art and fashion at this years’ show was so spectacular that the judges commented that it was very hard to choose the winners. We would also like to thank our judges, Jill Maxwell, Art Teacher at Bevis Elementa-ry, Phyllis Green from the Hillsborough Community College Sustainability Council and Mr. Antalek who stepped in at the last minute to replace our third judge who didn't make it in time. Judge Phyllis Green commented that the show was, "Awesome" and she also helped us out by taking pictures. Winners are listed below, be sure to congratulate them!

Hawk Fan Favorite: Rebecca Brewer and Rachel Forsythe

Best in Show: Rhiannon McDermott, Ashleigh Smith, Hannah Patrick and Mariah Legge

First Place in the Fashion Show: Daviana Tait and her cousin Sabrina Ramirez

Second Place in Fashion: Greta Gannon and her sister Ava Gannon

Third Place in Fashion: Isabella Brandt and Haley Berger

First Place in Art: Celilia Skrocki

Second Place in Art: Kate Luke and Lindsey Miller

Third Place in Art: Parker Webster

We had a tie for Best in Show for the Class/Teacher category, the award went to Mrs. Hardy's Class for their fabulous fashions and Mrs. Eftink's class for their "Chihuly" inspired art.

At the end, everyone was raving about the show and many parents signed up as volunteers to ensure that PTSA will do the show again so students can now start working on ideas for next year!

YEA! AwardAimee Eftink

Zachary is an 8th grade student with Downs Syndrome. Although he is extreme-ly intelligent, he is non-verbal. Zachary communicates through gestures, sign language, and he has a communication device that he uses effectively. Howev-er, the device has been broken for most of this school year. I am sure you can imagine how difficult it would be for a middle school student to communicate with his typical peers! Well, not for Zachary. Somehow, he manages just fine, and he makes his friends understand him.

In the two years that he has been at Randall, he has made many friends. I call him the Rodney Dangerfield of Randall. He has a larger than life personality, and is usually the life of the party with an amazing sense of humor. Last year, the PTA hosted a dance during school hours. Not one student was dancing, and Zachary wanted to dance. So, he chose two or three girls to dance with him. And then he signaled for a few more, and then a few more, and within minutes, he had every boy, girl and many teachers dancing.

Zachary has amazing leadership qualities, and students listen to him. He is on the recycling team for Randall. Zach-ary knows the process, and never hesitates to make sure that every student on the team is doing their job correctly. And, the students always listen to his lead. Last year I had car line duty. Zachary helped me on many occasions. There were many days that parents would simply ignore me, but never Zachary. He had a way of keeping the car line moving.

Zachary is a born leader despite his disability. Zachary speaks without using words that his peers would understand, but yet they understand almost all of what he has to say. Zachary is an inspiration to me, and everyone that knows him.

FLORIDA STATE BATON TWIRLING CONTEST

Madison Weiss, an 8th grader at Randall Middle School, re-cently earned Florida State Baton Twirling Champion titles at the Florida State Baton Twirling Competition. Madison has been twirling since she was in 3rd grade and has pre-viously earned State Champion titles in Missouri as well as a National Champion Title for twirling 2 batons. This year she earned the Florida State Champion Titles for her solo (1 baton), 3 baton and also her "Show Twirl". Show Twirls are performed to music and use multiple props to enhance the

performance. Madison's Show Twirl is performed to the song "One Short Day" from the musical Wicked. She also placed top 5 in her 2 Baton performance.

In May, Madison will travel to Georgia to compete in Miss Majorette of the Southeast in hopes of representing Florida at the National Competition in July at Notre Dame University.

Madison twirls with Patrick's Patriots and is coached by Barbara Patrick and Lynann Hudson. Lynann also works with the Newsome High School twirlers and coaches the UCF Majorettes.

THE NATIONAL JUNIOR YOUNG LEADERS CONFERENCEStudents attending the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) develop and sharpen their leadership skills by examining the leaders of the past, and are empowered to become leaders them-selves. The program centers on leadership through a practical, everyday lens, incorporating a detailed examination of six leadership traits and focuses on leaders in American history and social advocacy. Dis-tinctive site experiences, hands-on exercises and workshops bring these concepts to life, while students

work together to develop action plans that affect change within their homes and communities.

Pranav AmbadasugariGoing to Washington, D.C. is more amazing than it seems once you are there. Everyone at the National Junior Young Leaders Conference was friendly to me and Supreet, along with Rythvic. We met lots of friends. There was alot to see, starting with the “Newseum.” The Newseum was specifically built for media from the past to now. Some of the stories were inspiring. There was even a piece of the Berlin wall there.

Next was the Museum of American History, which was one of the coolest places. It even had Bruce Lee’s clothes from one of his movies.

Some of the most interesting places were the monuments. They were amazing to see and explained alot about our history. The memorials were sad but also inspiring. The last two places, and personally my favorites, were Harper’s Ferry and the Maryland Sci-ence Center. Harper’s Ferry was a historic Civil War battle site about John Brown, an important man in our history. The sleepover at the Maryland Science Center was exciting. We got to go around freely and there were many exhibits to see. We learned about how to get our message out and make a difference in our communities. In fact, each of our groups had different characteristics that we focused on while implementing the six leadership traits. The 4H center was a great place to stay and if I had the chance to go to the JrNYLC again I would definitely do it again, But none of this would be possible without Mrs.Dyer

Supreet DeshmukhMy experience to go to Washington DC was really great. I’d like to thank Mrs. Dyer for her help. I think that I learned and was inspired a lot about leadership at the conference, by getting to see monuments like the Lincoln memorial, Harper's Ferry, the museum, Smithsonian museum, Maryland Science Center and Capitol Hill. I also met friends from all over the country including Puerto Rico. They were nominated by their teachers to go to Wash-ington DC to learn about leadership. I learned that using leadership traits I can make a difference in my school, and my community.

At the National Junior Young Leaders Conference, we also learned about what you should do to get your message across. Staying with other roommates that you don’t know was a little challenge at first, but as you got to know them a little bit better they became your friends. We also learned what characteristics you think that a good leader should have like honesty, respect, and courage. I learned why teamwork is important we did activities to show why teamwork is important and why you cannot succeed without a team.I went to the Lincoln Memorial and also visited the Korean War Memorial and Vietnam Memorial. Harper's Ferry was a town during the Civil War. It was really important because an important man named John Brown was trying to ban slavery by using violence. We also learned how it was living in the time of the Civil War by role playing. When I went to the museum we saw the Berlin Wall, news all over the world and the U.S. We also went to the Smithsonian Museum of American History, where we saw the original jail cell door where Martin Luther King, Jr. was in jail, and we also saw the 9/11 memorial.

Rythvic RauMrs. Dyer nominated Supreet Desmukh, Pranav Ambadasugari, and myself, Rythvic Rau, to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, or JrNLYC, in Washington, D.C. We attended the session from March 24th to March 29th. We flew to Baltimore, Maryland with my dad after getting up at three in the morning. We stayed for a little while at my aunt’s house and later checked in at the 4-H Center, where the conference was held. Once registered, we toured the buildings and went through introductions with everybody else, and the next day we got down to the real business.

Each day of the conference had a similar schedule. It seemed to me that we were in college with kids from all over the United States from California to Alaska. We had breakfast at the cafeteria, which was named the Clover Café, went to our LFG (Lead-ership Focus Group) meetings which were organized by the traits of leadership (e.g. Communication 1), departed for our sight-seeing trip, had lunch near or at the sites, came back, and went to bed in the dormitories. The main difference was that we went to a different site every day. We visited the Newseum, the National Memorials, Harpers Ferry, the National Museum of American History, and the Maryland Science Center, where we had a sleepover. I don’t know about everyone else, but I had a blast the whole time.

All in all, I had a great time while I was on that trip even though and especially because our parents weren’t with us. I was inspired by the snow which I haven’t seen or tasted since I was young. I think I benefited from learning about the voices of leadership, free-dom, struggle, courage, and change. The whole point of the conference was to teach us about the good traits that make a leader, and I feel confident in my knowledge of those traits. It also taught us a lot about taking responsibility and managing time wisely. Out of all the trips, I feel that the Maryland Science Center sleepover was the best. The best part is Supreet, Pranav, and I are now JrNYLC Alumni, which makes us eligible for another conference in Boston next year. We are already looking forward to that one!

THE R.A.Y.S. COUNCIL MEMORIAL FOR FLORIDA’S FALLEN SOLDIERSKristy Verdi

Students in the Randall Middle School’s service learning program have prepared a display to honor the 319 Florida soldiers who have died since the beginning of the “War on Terror” that began after the terrible events of September 11, 2001.

The students began by learning about the origin and meaning of the Memorial Day holiday. The students researched to learn the names and hometowns of our heroes.

Visitors may view the display Friday, May 25th after school hours until dusk, and Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 26-28th, during daylight hours. Randall Middle School is located

at 16510 Fishhawk Blvd. in Lithia, Florida. The display will be located on the front patio and loop.

COUNSELOR’S CORNERMelissa Miller, 6th Grade Counselor

Here are the important dates and information for this month for you to be aware of:

1. The Extended Learning Program started on April 22nd and runs through June 3rd. Those students who were invited to attend this have received their letters. It’s very important that everyone earns a minimum of two quality points in their core subjects each semester in order to pass to the next grade.

2. Character Education lessons will be done on May 6th in homerooms. 6th grade will focus on being resourceful, 7th grade will focus on being patriotic, and 8th grade will focus on being generous.

3. Ms. Roberts, 7th grade counselor, will be presenting an anti-bullying activity to the student body in May.

4. The last conference night is Thursday May 2nd so please meet with teachers if your child is having difficulties in any of their classes. The time is 5:00 to 7:00PM.

5. Edline will be updated on May 9th and May 23rd so please check that regularly to keep up on your child’s grades and assignments.

6. Be sure to wear your Randall shirt/colors on Fridays for extra Hawk Bucks. May 17th is also college shirt day to promote a college-going culture here at Randall.

7. Exam week begins June 3rd and the last day of school is June 7th……woo hoo! More information will be posted on our website. It’s very important to study and do all your assignments up until the last day of school so you can be sure to pass to the next grade with good transcripts. Parents, please make sure your students are attending regularly and doing all their work and studying for tests and getting extra help if needed.

8. Ms. Richards, the 8th grade counselor wanted to remind everyone that there is Algebra tutoring available if needed so be sure to ask your math teacher about it. The End of Course exams to earn credits in Algebra and Geometry are also in May and you can email math teachers to get more information.

9. Ms. Richards will also be visiting the History classes to do the Educational Career Plan with the 8th grade students. The plan helps students map out their high school courses and what they need in order to graduate in four years with a diploma. It does not register them for classes. This document will be coming home for parents to sign and it must be re-turned as part of the promotion requirement for students to go to high school.

10. Summer school will be offered this summer for students who didn’t pass a core subject in order to earn quality points to pass to the next grade. More information will be coming directly to those students who will be requiring this.

11. Ms. Richards is very proud to announce that Yovauris Urena was selected as the Turnaround Student for this year! He is an AVID student who has developed great study and organizational skills and is well-pre-pared for high school and beyond. He was honored at a county breakfast and given a beautiful plaque. Keep up the great work in high school Yovauris!

12. The guidance department would like to wish everyone a wonderful summer! It’s been great getting to know our grade levels better and helping them through this school year. We really appreciate how hard everyone worked during FCAT, and we’re sure all the hard work will pay off next year.

As always, please feel free to contact us whenever needed. Ms. Miller, 6th grade counselor, can be reached at 740-3900 x255 or via email. Ms. Roberts, 7th grade counselor, can be reached at 740-3900 x233 or via email. Ms. Richards, 8th grade counselor, can be reached at 740-3900 x231 or via email.

HAWK STORE NEEDS HAVE CHANGED!Linda Weiss

The store is being staffed by teachers on Wednesday before school now. We only need volunteers for the "Fun Fri-days". Please consider signing up for the few remaining Fun Fridays. The students really enjoy the snow cones and popcorn! Without your help we can not continue to offer the event.
