The board is getting ready to finish out our year as well and plan for next year. Many of us including myself will be moving on as my son is in 8th grade. Therefore, we are looking for people who want to get involved. Please know that being on the PTSA board does not mean you have to give a lot of time. There are plenty of positions that require very little time and none of them take a ton of time – not even President! Kathy Hayes has written an article in this newslet- ter about next year’s board so please read it for more information and I encourage you to contact one of us with any questions! We still have some fun things coming up like the Cultural Arts Night featuring Upcycled Art on April 4 from 6-8PM! Come enjoy the fun and see all the projects created by stu- dents, classes and teachers. Look at the article in this newsletter for more information. If you currently have a Newsome High School student or an 8th grader that will be attend- ing NHS next year please consider getting involved with the PTSA there. I am currently on that board and will be on it again next year. There are many positions or even com- mittees that you can be on and they all take even less time and commitment than ones at the elementary or middle school level. Being on the PTSA is a great way to get involved with the school and know what is going on and that is harder and harder to do as our children get older. Do you have a Hawk Buck to spare? Hawk Bucks is a unique program where stu-dents are rewarded for making great choices on a daily basis. Students are given Hawk Bucks which are redeemed for small items or saved for larger opportunities. Once or twice a week during lunch, the students can redeem them at the store on the stage. Counselor’s CornerMelissa Miller, 6th Grade Counselor

Here are the important dates and information for this month for you to be aware of:1. The 6th grade students will finish up their trip to Nature’s Classroom on April 4th.2. Stanford testing will be done with 7th and 8th graders on April 2nd and with 6th graders on April 8th. Please be sure to be here on time and ready to test on those days. Ms. Miller, 6th grade counselor, will be in charge of this testing.3. The Extended Learning Program ends on April 4th for those needing to earn quality points for the 1st semester. The last session will begin on Monday 4/22 and end on Monday 6/3 since there is no ELP on Memorial Day. This will be for students needing to earn quality points for any of the first three quarters. Letters will be mailed home on 4/17 and copies will be given to students too.4. There will be an anti-bullying presentation during lunches by Officer White who performed the song “It’s Not Snitchin’, It’s Crime Prevention” on the Morning Show, and the students really liked it. This will be on Wednesday April 10th, and Mr. Oliver, Prevention Specialist, is in charge of this.5. Ms. Richards, 8th grade counselor, did a presentation on the morning show on 2/28 and read the poem “Choose Your Stone” to show how saying mean things can really hurt a person. A discussion was held in homerooms so students could develop “stones of character.”6. Ms. Miller did a presentation on the morning show on 3/26 and read the story “Nails in the Fence” which is about how losing your temper is like hitting a nail in the fence because even if you say that you’re sorry afterwards, it still leaves a hole in the fence after the nail is taken out. A discussion was held in homerooms so students could develop empathy for others and come up with strategies to control their tempers.7. Ms. Richards presented our “Turnaround Student” award at the county’s ceremony on 4/11. More information will be coming about this.8. Be sure to wear a baseball shirt on 4/5 and a college shirt on 4/26 or you could always wear Randall shirts or colors on every Friday to earn extra hawk bucks for school spirit.9. FCAT testing will begin on Monday 4/15 with the math sessions for everyone. On 4/16, it will be the first session of reading for 8th grade and the computer-based reading test for 7th grade will begin and run through 4/19. Students will only need to do the computer test one day, but it takes all week to get all tests done on computers for everyone. The science test for 8th grade will be on Thursday 4/18. Math make-ups for 6th and 8th grade will be on Friday 3/19 and it will be on Monday 4/22 for 7th grade as well as science make-ups for 8th grade. The computer-based test for reading for 6th grade will begin on Monday 4/22 and end on Friday 4/26. The reading make-ups for 8th grade will be on 4/23 and 4/24. If needed, make-ups will be continued on 4/25 and 4/26, but those days will mostly be for boxing the materials up. Please be sure to be here on time and ready to test on those days. Ms. Roberts, 7th grade counselor, will be in charge of this testing. 10. 7th grade will go on a field trip to Busch Gardens on Friday 4/26.11. Character Education lessons will be done on April 29th in homerooms. For April, 6th grade discusses being ambitious, 7th grade discusses being considerate, and 8th grade discusses being courageous.12. Edline will be updated on 4/11 and 4/25 so please check to keep current on your child’s grades. Email teachers directly if you have any questions or concerns about grades or issues hap-pening in class.13. We start the final quarter on April 1st and students need to earn at least two quality points in each of their core subjects per semester in order to pass to the next grade level. If they don’t, they will need to make up those classes during the summer.14. There are no more days off from school until Memorial Day. Please remember to call the attendance line before school starts if your child is absent for that day at 740-3900 x1. As always, please feel free to contact us whenever needed. Ms. Miller, 6th grade counselor, can be reached at 740-3900 x255 or via email. Ms. Roberts, 7th grade counselor, can be reached at 740-3900 x233 or via email. Ms. Richards, 8th grade counselor, can be reached at 740-3900 x231 or via email. If you have an issue involving discipline or bullying, please contact either Mr. Antalek, 6th grade boys and 8th grade assistant principal at 740-3900 x226 or via email, or Dr. Sykes, 6th grade girls and 7th grade assistant principal at 740-3900 x238 or via email.

Ever wonder if there is anything going on at your child’s middle school? Ever find information about an event wadded at the bottom of their backpacks, only to find that it came and went 3 months ago? Being on the PTSA Board is a great way to get involved in your child’s school and see your child from time to time as they pass by you as if you were a total stranger…but they love knowing you are there and helping out! The Teachers and Staff are so thankful for all the PTSA does for their school that it is a very rewarding experience!

We are reaching the end of our PTSA year! We have a Nominating Committee in place to start getting the new Executive Board and Chair Positions in place for the 2013-14 school year.
