Foreword from CEO

Welcome to our national Newsletter for the

Production Technologies Association of South

Africa.

As was indicated in our first issue, the Board of

Directors of the Toolmaking Association of South

Africa, after lengthy discussions, have decided to

emphasize that going forward it will represent the

interests of the production technologies industry in

South Africa, and grow and strengthen the role of

the Association.

We have been mandated to implement a strategy to

grow the Association, to strengthen the role of the

Association on a national basis, and to expand the

scope of the association to include all aspects of the

production technologies industry. This will be

achieved through a process of networking,

partnerships and advocacy, similar to the process

which was implemented through the WCTI in the

Western Cape. We have included more details

regarding these plans in the Newsletter.

Formal announcements of the change of name of

the Toolmaking Association of South Africa to the

Production Technologies Association of South Africa

(PtSA) were made at the Networking Evenings held

recently in the Western Cape and Gauteng. This

name change is specifically intended to bring the

Association in line with international practices and

industry/government terminology.

Our Networking evenings which were held in the

Western Cape and Gauteng were sponsored by DG

Capital, and we thank the team from DG Capital for

this generous gesture. (Please see article in this

Newsletter)

We are also including details of some of the events

which took place towards the end of last year and

the beginning of this year, for your information and

interest, as well as some items of general interest

and information.

We are also including details of the Manufacturing

Indabas which are scheduled to take place during

this year, starting off with the Gauteng

Manufacturing Indaba taking place on the 19th & 20th

June at the Sandton Convention Centre.

We hope that you find this newsletter interesting and

informative. We would welcome any comments or

suggestions regarding the newsletter.

Dennes Engineering is a family business which has always offered good

service to its customers, has always formed good partnerships with its

suppliers and customers and offers a diverse portfolio of capabilities.

However, the one aspect that the company has always struggled with is

marketing, according to Harley Nash who has recently taken over the

business from his dad Don.

The vision that Dennes has now adopted is to grow the business, and

engineering in general, through good marketing, and also to include a strong

element of trade.

Based on this vision Dennes has recently added new trading partners to its

existing agencies for BHS Corrugated and Dicar and are now the agent for

both Vixen Aquablasters and Teng Tools in South Africa.

Vixen Aquablasters can be used for a wide variety of applications including

cleaning of aluminium, mild and stainless steel components, engine

components, surface preparations prior to bonding or coating, and is safe for

precision or tightly tolerance components. Dennes also offers a cleaning

service to the manufacturing industry.

Teng Tools, a Swedish tool brand with a lifetime guarantee, offers a large

range of hand tools and measuring equipment for the automotive,

maintenance and manufacturing industries, and includes tool storage

systems. Dennes will be distributing the tools through their brand new on-line

sales platform (www.teng-tools.co.za)

Emile Coetzee takes over as MD of Capewell Springs &

Metal Pressings

Dennes Engineering Expands Operations

Emile Coetzee recently took over as MD of Capewell Springs and Metal Pressings

(a member of the Kern-Liebers Group) from Graham Montgomery who left to take

over the position of MD at Kern-Liebers (UK)

Emile, who has been with Capewell Springs and Metal Pressings since 2015 as

National Sales Manager, has a strong engineering background which, combined

with his experience in sales, makes him well qualified for this new role.

Capewell Springs and Metal Pressings is a major supplier of metal pressings,

springs, wire forms and strip springs to various industries including the

automotive, electrical, construction, agricultural and textile industries. They have a

well-equipped toolroom and produce most of their own tooling.

Emile has a strong philosophy of making use of the available programmes offered

Emile on his daily commuter (Ducati Scrambler)

Harley Nash with an engine casting after Aquablasting

through organisations such as Productivity SA (Capewell Springs and

Metal Pressings are currently implementing the Workplace Challenge

Programme) and the NTIP (Capewell Springs and Metal Pressings have

undergone the NTIP/WBA Benchmarking and Intervention Projects) in

order to improve production efficiencies and also human relationships at all

levels of the company. He is a firm believer in breaking down any form of

an “us and them” approach amongst the staff, and thus ensuring that there

is a strong team approach to the business.

He is a great supporter of networking amongst manufacturing companies

in order to improve the overall economic climate in the country.

We wish him all the best in his new role.

As a result of setting up this new on-line sales platform, they will also be

setting up a similar platform for the engineering work that they and their

partners can undertake which fits in very well with their vision to grow the

business through good marketing.

To quote Harley, “this coupled with our marketing through our own

newsletters, facebook pages and Instagram accounts, we believe this will

make our business and our partners businesses accessible and

approachable to a wider market”

How a local Precision Manufacturer remains competitive

Transnet sponsored Enterprise Development Initiative

A view of one of the state of the art CNC precision grinding

machines used by Spectra-Mapal

As part of TRANSNET Enterprise and Supplier Development, TRANSNET

SOC has partnered with PRODUCTIVITY SA to support enterprises with

business development services. The overall OBJECTIVE of this operational

support initiative is to establish systems and procedures to address

challenges affecting the operational performance and product- or service

delivery capabilities of existing and potential TRANSNET suppliers.

Practical support interventions at the premises of participating enterprises

focus on improving operational efficiency and utilization of resources through,

for example, improved scheduling practices and material control.

Furthermore, through the development and implementation of practical

solutions waste elimination and quality improvement is pursued.

This practical enterprise development initiative undertaken over an 11 week

period is available to business entities that:

Are 51%+ black owned.

Have been in operation for at least two (2) years.

Have physical premises from which they conduct their business

Employs at least four (4) fulltime employees.

Applications can be made via the Production Technologies Association of

South Africa or directly to Veliswa Dywili

This unique enterprise development opportunity is 99% funded by

TRANSNET. Qualifying applicants will be required to contribute R900

towards the cost of implementing practical solutions aimed at improving

operational efficiency and resource utilization as well as waste reduction

and quality improvement.

Spectra-Mapal is an Atlantis (Western Cape) based manufacturer of

specialised carbide cutting tools and also offers a tool regrinding service.

In a recent discussion between Deon Bower (Founder and Managing Director

of Spectra-Mapal), Ilse Karg (Chief Director Future Industrial Production

Technologies (Industry 4.0) of ‘the dti’) and the Toolmaking Association of

South Africa, he spoke about some of the challenges which Spectra-Mapal is

facing and some of the advantages which the company has as a specialised

local manufacturer.

These advantages can be summarised as follows:-

High flexibility and quick response times to customer requirements

They can handle small volumes and short production runs

Highly skilled local workforce

Direct management involvement in all aspects of the business

The challenges which the company is facing are similar to those other smaller

manufacturers are facing and include:-

Access to funding for development of technology and software updates

How to remain competitive against imports

Access to research and development

A clear marketing strategy

Deon feels that the local precision manufacturing industry must become more

supportive of each other in facing these challenges and strive towards a

collective growth strategy for the manufacturing industry.

He is very positive towards the future and believes that, with the correct

support, local smaller manufacturers can thrive.

Cashflow & BBBEE Solutions via DG Capital

Conver-Tek shows confidence in the future

DG Capital Cashflow and BBBEE solutions for the Tooling Industry

DG Capital is well known for its APDP support services in the tooling

industry. This close working relationship developed with the industry, has

enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by

toolmakers.

It is projected that more than R60 million in cash value will successfully be

claimed by the DG Capital Processing division for Toolmakers in the 2018

calendar year.

There are two challenges that continually frustrate the ability to secure and

execute potential orders: - Cashflow and BBBEE Compliance.

Cashflow shortages can threaten project milestones, or even preclude a

Toolmaker from participating in the tender process to secure an order.

BBBEE compliance has become more than just a buzzword, and is a

qualifier for AIS participation, and more than likely a requirement to continue

receiving benefits from the APDP replacement program after 2021.

DG Capital has developed models to address both issues for the Tooling

Industry. For qualifying Toolmakers, flexible finance options and payment

terms linked with your customer project milestones are available.

As far as BBBEE compliance is concerned, the DG Capital model

addresses the preferential procurement portion of the scorecard through

a 51% Black owned procurement entity. This ensures that 100% of the

purchase value contributes towards your scorecard and maximises that

portion of your rating. Imported purchases that would otherwise not

qualify for points can now also qualify.

These models are tailored to meet each individual Toolmaker’s needs.

Natasha Croucamp and Rodney Rudman of

DG Capital at the Nov Networking Evening

Bevan Davis, Managing Director of Conver-Tek says that the recent

R20m investment in their new factory is an indication of their

confidence in the future of manufacturing in South Africa. Bevan goes

on to say that we can either be negatively influenced by the

uncertainties of the future, or we can take positive and bold steps to

positively influence the future of the economy.

This investment will ensure that the company can expand and develop

its vision for future growth, and for it to remain competitive in the local

and international markets.

Bevan is looking at the opportunities that are presenting themselves to

local manufactures such as a growing urban middle class in South

Africa, the opportunities in Africa, the positive impact of the Rand on

exports, to name a few, and encourages other manufacturers to take a

positive and long term view of the future.

He also encourages the local industry to become involved in influencing

policy and programmes for the benefit of the manufacturing sector, by

joining associations such as the Production Technologies Association,

so that industry “stands together”. He would like to see more “

co-opetition” where companies compete with each other while

co-operating with each other in a cluster environment.

He says that his recent visit to Portugal to see the Portuguese mould

making industry, really illustrated this philosophy of “co-opetition”, which

has resulted in the Portuguese mould making industry being one of the

Recent WC & Gauteng Networking Evenings

Successful Networking Evenings were held in November 2017, March 2018 and May 2018, with a number of

presentations.

We also had a number of items / service offerings on display during the evenings for the benefit of our guests.

TradeWorld’s Leads and Tenders service is South Africa’s largest provider of Tenders and

RFQ’s. These opportunities are sourced from over 1000 sources, including websites, tender

portals, newspapers, etc. and are matched to your business profile and geographical

requirement and delivered to your business daily, in one comprehensive email.

PtSA have negotiated a special offer - a once off upfront payment of R4580.00 (incl

vat) for 12 months National coverage. Offer ends end July 2018.
