Greetings from Principal Lovrin

Dear Parents, Students and Teachers,

The end of the school year is always very busy and it is

very easy to get side tracked from the primary purpose of focus-

ing on education. The most important goals for our Washington

High School students should be to remain focused on education,

getting to class on time and doing the best in class. Good study

habits are important for students, especially during testing and

finals.

State Testing (STAR/CST exam) will take place the

week of April 12th to April 14th. (Please refer to the website for

the special testing schedule.) It is important for students to do

their very best on the STAR/CST tests since test scores are used

to help place students in their classes for next year and 11th grade

test scores are used to determine CSU and other colleges English

and Math placement.

In addition, Advanced Placement Testing is from May

2nd to May 13th. Throughout all testing and finals, please encour-

age your student to do their very best, stay focused and take care

of themselves by eating a good breakfast and getting enough

sleep each night.

The following is a brief list of some of the events that

are taking place within the next several months for seniors: Prom

will be taking place on Friday, May 13th at the Gift Center (if

students have two or more U’s on their last report card or are on

the last cut list they may not attend the prom); Senior’s End of

Year Celebration is on Wednesday, May 25th at the Senior Court-

yard and Graduation will be on Thursday, May 26th at 2 PM in

the Washington High School Stadium.

Since this is a very busy time for seniors it is important

for seniors to stay focused on their grades and do their very best

so that they are assured of participating in graduation and other

related activities. The last day of school is on Friday, May 27th,

2011. The first day of the fall semester is Monday, August 15th,

2011.

I would like to thank all of the students, parents and

teachers for their continuing hard work this past year at GWHS.

Your hard work makes Washington a great school with many

long standing traditions and proud graduates! Have a great re-

mainder of the school year. Do your best - your very best! GO

A Message from the PTSA President ―If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep

walking, eventually you’ll make progress‖ Barack Obama

Dear George Washington High School Families, Friends, Admin-

istrators, Teachers and every one of our wonderful Students,

THANK YOU for the great pleasure of serving as the PTSA

President this year. I truly enjoyed getting to know everyone and

I loved being a part of what’s going on in our school.

Throughout this year we held our monthly meetings, on schedule,

as promised, every 2nd Wednesday of every month. We had some

really good potluck dinners and excellent programs which includ-

ed topics of interest and education and gave parents one on one

time with our principal. Thank you to everyone who attended the

meetings, and a special ―Thank you‖ to Fray , Michelle and the

entire Beacon Staff, and Mr. Propster, Ms. Hendricks and the

VAPA Department for all their help and support in putting the

Spring Showcase together.

Also, I’d like to thank all the PTSA officers and chair-

men for their commitment and support to our school and the stu-

dents. I was more than a bit nervous coming into the school year

as a new, first time PTSA President, but with such a great team

working with me I feel this year was a huge success in that we

served the Students, Parents, and Teachers the best we could and

we were able to award PTSA Grants to the teachers who applied

for them which benefits our students.

Last but not least, I’d like to thank our Principal, Mrs. Ericka

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR FRIENDS, FAMILIES,

STUDENTS AND STAFF WHO JOINED THE PTSA THS YEAR. We hope you renew your membership for the 2011-2012 school year. We will continue to hold meetings every 2nd Wednesday of every

month. If there’s a particular topic or program you’d like to see presented, please let us know, we welcome your suggestions, input and feed-

back. These meetings are for everyone—students, parents, teachers, friends and members of our community.

One of the main purposes of the PTSA is to bring into closer relation the home and the school that parent and teachers may cooperate intelli-

gently in the education of children and youth. The PTSA and the George Washington High School Community would like to thank the fol-

Discounted Alumni Association

Memberships for Seniors! Class of 2011 students and parents, this is a very busy, ex-

citing and expensive time of the year for you! Between

wrapping up your academic requirements and college

plans, preparing for Prom, Commencement and all the oth-

er fun senior activities, it's a whirlwind that will pass by in

a blur!

This is also the time of year we ask seniors to join the

Alumni Association. Everyone who graduates from Wash-

ington is a Washington alumnus, but that doesn't automati-

cally make you an Alumni Association member.

Last year, a senior asked me "If I join, what's in it for me?"

That is not the consideration, by joining the Alumni Asso-

ciation helps alumnus stay in contact with each other and

the school (because not everyone is on Facebook!), makes

it easier for future reunion committees to get in touch with

you, and most importantly is the means by which you can

give back to the school. After all, you've been unwittingly

benefitted by classroom materials and supplies that were

purchased with Alumni Association Teacher Grants and, as

you'll see on May 10 and during Commencement, Alumni

Association-sponsored cash awards. So, the "what's in it for

me" has already been covered, and we want you to pay it

forward when you're successful.

Class of 2011 may join at the discounted fee of $10. That

is a lifetime membership; no other dues or fees are re-

quired, ever! The discount is good through Dec. 31st, 2011,

but really this is the time to join because once you're out

you'll have other things on your plate. The regular member-

ship fee is $30 and subject to increase in the future. So take

advantage of the discount and shell out a ten-spot!

I will be passing out membership forms at the Senior

Awards Assembly on May 10, and I will also be at selected

additional senior events, yet to be determined, most likely

at one of your grad rehearsals. Cash is best, we do accept

checks, and you can also join by Paypal payment (but email

me first). If you have any questions, please feel free to

Email me at [email protected] , or Alumni Associ-

ation Executive Director Denise Joseph (who is on campus

Mondays only in Room 115-F and or you can Email her at

[email protected]

CHINESE-AMERICAN CLUB (CAC)

The Chinese-American Club (CAC) was estab-

lished at Washington High School in 1976

when the population at Washington saw an in-

flux of Asian students after the repeal of the

Asian Exclusion Act. The purpose of the Club

was for young people to socialize. CAC held

bowling parties, movie nights, sports night,

dances, and trips to Great America, Santa Cruz,

and Marine World.

Today, the Chinese American Club has become

a community service club for interested stu-

dents. The club raises funds from the annual

Walk for CAC, Lunar New Year

Parade, Bay to Breakers, Nike

Women Expo/Run, San Francis-

co Marathon and Escape from

Alcatraz. A banquet is usually

held at an Asian Restau

rant to cap off the year along with a trip to ei-

ther Great America or Marine World. This

year, CAC will not go on a trip and would ra-

ther donate the proceeds from their Walk for

CAC to the Asian Women Shelter so the chil-

dren at the shelter will have clothes and toys.

The President of CAC for 2010 and 2011 is

Victor Liang. CAC members who have served

for four-years will compete for a $500 scholar-

ship.

Anyone interested to join CAC please contact

Alan Layug, the current sponsor, in room 219

during lunch. Members do not have to be Chi-

nese to join the Club, it’s open to

all. Thank you!

EAGLES SERVICE SOCIETY

also known as ESS

The Eagles Service Society

(ESS) will celebrate its 75th Anniversary on

October 15th, 2011. So much has changed in 75

years! When ESS was established, it was only

for young men who wanted to do community

service and to be accepted in ESS, one must re-

ceive two nominations by their teachers. To-

day, ESS is coed and membership is open to an-

yone who wishes to join. Members accepted

into ESS must volunteer for one community

service activity, fill in an application and be in-

terviewed. This year, we are accepting 45 new

ESS members who will replace the 50 ESS

members from the Class of 2011.

ESS is one of the most active clubs at school.

ESS members who volunteer for the Bay to

Breakers 100th running on May 15th, will re-

ceive a red polo shirt. Members who volunteer

at the Nike’s Women Expo receive an ESS shirt

and if they volunteer at the Nike’s Women Mar-

athon receives an ESS sweatshirt. ESS mem-

bers who earn more than 75 hours

in a window from May to October

and from November to October

receive plaques. Seniors who have the mini-

mum hours will receive a graduation sash. ESS

was the first club to give sashes to its graduat-

ing members since 2005. ESS seniors who

earned the most hours from the time they joined

are awarded scholarships. This year we will

give three scholarships valued over $300.

ESS members have participated in many events

such as WASC, Community Cleanup, Glide

Church sandwich making during Christmas and

Thanksgiving, The Chinatown Run, Lunar New

Year Run, Bay to Breakers Expo/Run, Cherry

Blossom Festival, Nihonmachi Street Fair, Jap-

anese Historical Society Events, Nikkei Lions

Club events, The Wild Run, Back to School

Night, Fall mailing, Freshmen Orientation, and

PTSA events.

In GWHS, there are many opportunities for students to discov-er the gift of volunteering for a better, noble cause. Created in May 2009 and sponsored by Mr. Jackson, Eagle Pride is one of these op-portunities where innovation and efficiency work simultaneously for students to experience doing something without getting anything in return. As one of the newest service clubs created, EP has developed a whole new way of volunteering. They offer students the chance to volunteer without any limitations or boundaries. Students in this club are free to volunteer whenever they like because GPA and minimum hour’s requirements are crossed out of the picture. Members are al-lowed to concentrate on their education and other extracurricular activities while having the option to volunteer that fits their schedule. Eagle Pride strives to be a positive impact on the school and the community they serve. We realized that with fewer limitations comes more drive and dedication from our members. In the Fresh-men Leadership Institute (FLI), for example, members efficiently as-sisted staff members on paperwork and food; and helped incoming freshmen on directions and feeling comfortable in this school. Eagle Pride has also made connections with the Beacon Food Pantry where students are able to volunteer monthly in the Richmond District Neighborhood Center by unpacking and handing out food to the dis-advantaged. May 2 - 6 is Teacher Appreciation Week. Eagle Pride will once again honor teachers and staff by sending them thank you note and a little treat. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s effort in making our four year stay at Washington a rewarding and enriching experience. The impact of Eagle Pride and my life: When I first joined Eagle Pride in the summer of 2010, I was hesitant on whether I would fit in or be accepted. But of course, with such a great environment like theirs, Eagle Pride’s members and offic-ers were all welcoming when I first volunteered at my first volunteer-ing event. They were all so friendly, caring, and thoughtful on how I felt and how comfortable I was. It felt like I belonged, like a family unit. And so, as my sophomore year unraveled, I found myself taking a lead in this group of 357 students in the middle of the year. As an officer, I learned to strengthen my skills as a leader from all of the responsibili-ties I hold and the stature it takes to fulfill my duties. With the help of Eagle Pride, I am now a more confident leader, able to take what all I have learned from this club to school and in life.

Have you been “Tdap-ed”?

No Shot Form, No School.

Students entering 7th through 12th

grades in the Fall must turn in proof

of Tdap (a vaccine that prevents

whooping cough) to their school

ASAP. Why? To protect them, their

families and school from this terrible

disease. This rule is California-wide

because pertussis is at an all-time

high. Most students received this

vaccine when they were 11-12

years old. So, please check your

shot record for this word: Tdap

(capital T, small dap). If it doesn’t

appear, call your doctor or clinic and

ask about it.

The MADD Car was on display at

GWHS on Thursday, April 7 all day

at the school’s main entrance on

32nd Avenue. Hundreds of students

viewed the MADD Car during health,

driver ed, college/career or other

classes. The bashed-up car was in-

volved in a fatal alcohol-and-

marijuana related accident. Many

students also had a chance to use

the Fatal Vision glasses, which mim-

ic the effect of alcohol on their coor-

dination and vision.

Physical Education Department

George Washington’s Physical Education Department has had another busy and ful-

filling school year. The Physical Fitness Testing was just completed for all ninth and

tenth grade PE students. Students are required to pass 5 of the 6 tests administered.

The staff of Physical Education has just completed Professional Development with

new technology to bring to our classrooms, "Dartfish‖ and a sophisticated usage of

the heart monitors. "Dartfish" is a system that looks at the bio mechanics of our stu-

dent's motor skills during activities, and the heart monitor system will track our student's heart rate.

Data will then be collected, and analyzed by our students and staff, results will be distributed after-

wards. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the PTSA for all they

have done, and continue to do for our staff, parents and students. We especial-

ly appreciate all the support to the PE department over all the years. T

hank you!

加州學業基準測試(STAR/CST考

De la Directora Lovrin Estimados Padres de Familia, Estu-

diantes y Maestros,

El final del año escolar es

siempre bien ocupado por lo que es

fácil desviarse de la meta principal

que es el enfocarse en la educa-

ción. La meta importante para

nuestros estudiantes aquí en la es-

cuela George Washington, siem-

mejor! ¡ARRIBA AGUILAS!

GO EAGLES!

Realmente he

diantes.

No había

carácter, liderazgo, calor humano y sentido social. Ella

NES!
