LTG MESSAGEHello Guardians and Friends! My name is Angela Apinyavat and I’m so proud and happy to serve the glamorous Golden Gate Division! I’ll be a 4th year this upcoming fall semester at UC Berkeley where I’m studying Public Health, Social Welfare and Global Poverty & Practice. I enjoy swimming, eating, scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed and real talks. New to Circle K or just need a friend to listen to you rant? Come talk to me sometime, I love to make new friends and share interesting stories! This wonderful newsletter, is made by our fantastic Divisional Media RelationsChair, Robert Rodriguez, who put a lot of work into creating this. Special shout outs to him and all of the members who helped contribute to this newsletter! This would not have been possible with out the outstanding members who wrote articles and found photos to all the corresponding events! I hope all of the readers are able to see what Golden Gate is all about after checking this newsletter out! For those who are unfamiliar with this division, we are made up of the Circle K Clubs of Cal State University East Bay, Diablo Valley College, Los Medanos College, UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University. Our mascot is the Golden Gate Guardian and our 2014-2015 divisional theme is Chemistry! A-U! Stay Golden Circle K-ers! :) I’m excited to meet each and every one of you this upcoming year!

SUMMERHello, Golden Gate! My name is Kenneth Olidan, and I am proud to be serving as the 2014-2015 Sunset Lieutenant Governor. If you didn’t know, Sunset Division actually used to be part of Golden Gate as one whole Division until the split during the 2011-2012 term in which Sunset Division was established. Sunset Division is located in the South Bay, and is comprised of five schools: De Anza College, Foothill College, San Jose State University, Stanford University, and UC Santa Cruz. Something that I love about Sunset Division is the fact that the Division encompasses all sorts of environment. To give you all some examples, I could be sitting in a lecture and listening to the recent discoveries in Stanford , stroll down the metropolitan area of San Jose, drive down over the Santa Cruz mountains, and head further down to view the amazing secluded beaches of Santa Cruz. I could
literally do all these things in one day. Apart from being a distant relative of Golden Gate, Sunset Division is one of the two Divisional Buddies of Golden Gate for the months of June, July, and August. Knowing that Golden Gate is only a BART ride away from Sunset creates endless possibilities of interacting with one another. In the recent past, members from both Divisions were able to visit one another numerous times, attending events such as Golden Gate OTC, Sunset DCMs, and many more. Due to the fact that Sunset and Golden Gate are so close sometimes makes me forget that we’re both different Divisions. I’m sure that the bond between Golden Gate and Sunset will always be there, despite the fact that we will be exchanging Divisional Buddies after
August.
DIVISIONAL BUDDIES
Aloha, Golden Gate! My name is Gerald Biando, and I am the Paradise Division Lieutenant Governor! I’m also a 4th year Public Health student at San Diego State University! To give a brief introduction of the Paradise Division, our schools in San Diego and Hawaii include: CSU San Marcos, Grossmont College, Hawaii Pacific University, Palomar College, San Diego State University, UC San Diego, UH Hilo, and UH Manoa. Down here in Paradise, we place a large emphasis on our ‘ohana (‘ohana means family), and having fun while helping make our communities a better place! Come over to San Diego and dance the night away on November 15th, 2014 for one the largest annual events in Paradise: Masquerade Ball, hosted by UC San Diego! Masquerade Ball is an annual fundraiser for PTP, which is held on a three-deck yacht in the San Diego bay. Also, during the months of June through August, Paradise had the pleasure of being one of your divisional buddies, and it was definitely a partnerSHIP to remember! Thank you for those of you who participated in our Paradise Pen-Pal Program, and we hope to see you all again soon at
Fall Training Conference!
This year, the Cal-Nev-Ha Circle K District Board would like members from our lovely district to get to know one another on a more intimate and personal level, and so we have implemented the Divisional Buddies System! For the summer season (June-August), we were paired up with the Sunset and Paradise Divisions. As divisional buddies our divisions aimed to work closely with one another which included some events such as a Golden-Paradise San Diego social and the Golden-Sunset Divisional Service project at the Kiwanis Special Games. In addition to that, we wrote pen pal letters and recorded video shout-outs to our buddies! We are sad that our time with our summer buddies is going to be over soon, but no worries because we will be paired up with two new divisional buddies this fall (September-November)! Get ready for some fun with
the Desert Oasis and Metro division! Best,

Hello Golden Gate! In July I had the pleasure of visiting you guys with District MD&E Chair, Tae Lim. I just wanted to say that it was an amazing experience
volunteering at service events, exploring a bit of Berkeley, and attending your division’s retreat! This was my first time in Berkeley so I had no idea what to expect. Luckily, Mike Zhou graciously housed us for an entire weekend! In addi-tion to volunteering at Chaparral House and Playland-Not-At-the-Beach, we were able to eat out at several places and of course grab boba at Mimi Ton’s recommended spots! My favorites were a chicken bowl at KoJa Kitchen and Strawberry Black Tea Creama from Sharetea. Of course, my favorite moment
was meeting so many of you at the Golden Gate Member Retreat! Angela and her divisional board planned a great retreat! You all are lucky to have such an
awesome Lieutenant Governor! You all are even more awesome for being so welcom-ing and fun to be around! Observing other divisions and clubs helped me understand how
to lead my club as President and this trip helped me understand how to better lead my division as Lieutenant Governor. So thank you! I hope to treat Central Coast to similar events just like your retreat. Even though Golden Gate and Central Coast will not get to be Divisional Buddies this year, that can’t stop us from having a joint DCM or a similar event in the future (throwback to 2011 Golden Coast DCM). Hope to visit Golden Gate again in the near future to meet more of you,
get more boba, and explore!

It was a beautiful day at Heather Farms park in Walnut Creek where the Golden Gate division of CNH Circle K was holding their End of the Year Banquet. Friends from all across the division, including
those from across the district, gathered around to celebrate in the light-hearted festivities. Many got together to have a photo shoot; the flowers and pond were wonderful settings to capture the moment within a photograph. Guests were treated to authentic Filipino food made by Immediate Past Golden Gate LTG Roswell Cua’s family. Once everyone was satisfied with the delicious food and drink, Ross had us all gather around as he prepared his closing speech. The beautiful words were not only the perfect way to end an amazing year for Golden Gate, but a way to transition our new LTG, Angela Apinyavat, into another great year. APRIL DSP: EGGSTER
Eggster Egghunt is an annual event known to be the largest free Easter egg hunt in Northern California. Volunteers arrived as early as 7:30am on March 19th to take part in the Divisional
Service Project. We helped manage stations with fun games for kids such as ring toss, bean bag toss, and a hunter-prey game identical to Red Light, Green Light. My favorite part was helping out with the egg hunts by replacing the eggs that were taken with new ones. We all ended the day by helping tear down the tables and chilling at the Campanile where we witnessed a wedding proposal being prepared on Memorial Glade. It was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning with the rest of the division.

GOLDEN-SUNSET MAY DSP:
On Friday, May 16th, 2014, Golden Gate Guardians traveled to Sunset Division’s
De Anza College to help with the 36th annual Kiwanis Special Games! This was the May Divisional Service Project. The Kiwanis Special Games is a one-day Special Olympics event held every May for special-needs children from all across the area. This is the one day of the year that these children feel validated and strong enough to participate in physical activities and succeed. A child even told me that they look forward to two things every year: Christmas and Special Games. We were very lucky to have the chance to volunteer at the Kiwanis Special Games! Volunteers had different tasks. Most of us led and managed a small group of kids, grouped according to their disability. We led them aroundthe De Anza track in games such as 50-yard
dash, Frisbee throw, and an obstacle course. My favorite part was watching children in wheelchairs race around an obstacle course; it was so adorable to watch! Sean Yoo of UC Berkeley worked solely
at the 50-yard dash that day. He stood at the finish line and cheered on the
different kids as they raced towards him. “Their faces were bright with victory,” says Sean. Once they reached the end, Sean and his group were in charge of handing out ribbons to the different kids.
There were first place ribbons, second place ribbons, and best effort
ribbons. The kids’ faces lighted up with joy as they received ribbons from competing
in the dash. Overall, this was a wonderful event that I’m sure everyone would love to volunteer at again next year! It was great working with the different kids and bonding with Sunset Division.

great break from all the studying after finals especially since I got to spend time with other CKI members.
Who says you need a nice warm day with a clear blue sky to go to a beach? On
May 31st, it was a normal cloudy day in San Fransico, but that didn’t not stop Golden Gate from having a social at Ocean Beach. What was really surprising was that even people from Capital and Sunset joined in. It really was a relaxing day, hanging out with fellow CKI members around a fire, eating the snacks everyone brought. The sand was surprisingly very warm so we ended up burying one of Capital’s members, Mo-Kang, in it. Before the
day came to the end we all decided to go get dinner together, so we went to a ramen shop around the area. We nearly filled up the entire restaurant. To end the day, we all got boba at Tpumps. For me, the social was a
JUNE DSP:HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
On June 6, 2014 summer vacation started for most students who are off from school or for
others the beginning of finals. However on this date our division along with other members from other divisions came together to assist the local Habitat for Humanity organization. Here Golden Gate members flexed their muscles in working on the inside and outside of the houses. Everyone was tasked with a different job from painting, landscaping, and cleaning. It was a hot day and we were given numerous water breaks to stay hydrated. In the end, we finished and the house from the inside out were beautiful and fit for a family to live in.

__________________After registration, we jumped straight into workshops.. With tons of hosts
from all over the district, there was a wide variety of workshops to chose from. From Small and Large schools to board guidelines, there was something to learn and apply at your home club. There was even a resume and interviewing workshop hosted by none other than Joe Lee to apply in your professional life.
Golden Gate Division’s Officer Training Conference, or OTC, took place on a beautiful sunny morning at UC Berkeley on July 5. Bringing together an assortment of board members and
general members from our five schools - CSU East Bay, Los Medanos College, Diablo Valley College, San Francisco State University, and UC Berkeley - the conference consisted of a series of workshops to train us for a thrilling year of service and leadership ahead!
Pizza quickly satisfied everyone’s hunger pangs; thinking and learning is tiring! After a few more workshops, we finished off the event with a summer
pen pal letter-writing session. We also made bookmarks for the students at our local service events! Overall, it was a productive, fun, and helpful conference and a fantastic opportunity to bring our entire division together in service, leadership, and fellowship.

Hosted in scenic Concord by Angela Apinyavat, Jerry Bao and his family, the retreat had something for everyone: good food, great entertainment, and even better company.
Perhaps it was the crazy card games we played and witty, yet creative skits we performed, or maybe it was the team-building, stack-the-straws competition, or it could’ve been the simple mailboxes for which we wrote letters and became acquainted with new, unfamiliar faces. Whichever it was, with warm, welcoming smiles, it’s hard to say the retreat felt anything less than homely. We even had the opportunity to get to know each other a little more personally—we shared similar struggles, worries, and fears. But there wasn’t any awkwardness to it; it felt safe. Accompanied by some late-night movies and food, the mood lightened and this unparalleled experience was complete. What a way to start the year!
GOLDEN GATEMEMBER RETREAT

The car wash started off pretty great! The flow of cars remained constant throughout the day and dealing with customers ended up being smooth and efficient. Because the funds were going toward our club and the Kiwanis Family House, the customers were pretty generous with the donations. Unfortunately, the fundraiser had to end early because we ran out of soap, but everyone still bonded and had fun. Originally,
this fundraiser was only for DVC members and the Division was invited as guests, but the other schools who attended actually participated.
They came to support the other schools in the division, so a huge thanks to UC Berkeley and LMC for coming to support DVC!!

5:45am. That was the excruciating minute that Golden Gate Guardians from all over the Bay Area had to be ready to serve at the SF Marathon. Accompanied by Alex Nguyen from Magic Kingdom
and Norman Wong from Sunset, Golden Gate was in charge of a water station at the 18th mile of the marathon. From the first runners gliding past us to the final runners carefully pacing themselves, Golden Gate was there with a refreshing cup of water or electrolytes for every runner. This included CNH District Secretary, Jonny Paguio, who sped by with enough energy to lead us into a CKI cheer! Despite being physically exhausted, nearly every single runner took the time and breath to express their gratitude. Early morning or not, this divisional service project was a tremendously good time. After the final runners passed, our group headed out for some pho and SF’s infamous Tpumps Boba!
