Fall semester flew by in a flash but don’t let the blur distract you from the flurry of events we had! The past few months were overflowing with District and

Divisional Events and many new and returning members. Take this time to reflect on all that we have done because before you know it, District Convention will be here!

Welcome back to school! A new semester or quarter awaits us with more people to help, more communities to serve, and more memories to make! I am looking

forward to the upcoming DCMs at Napa Valley College and CSU East Bay, as well as SFSU’s Project Valentine Fundraiser! Don’t forget to check out the fun upcoming divisional events that the Golden Gate Divisional Board and I have in store for you all. Additionally, a big congratulations to Los Medanos College’s Holiday DCM, Diablo Valley College’s Wintersong Coffee House Fundraiser, and UC Berkeley’s Kiwanis Take Over! I’m so proud of all of the things the clubs have done and accomplished so far, and with only a few months of term left, I am so excited to see everyone go above and beyond the call of service!

I also want to take this time to give personal divisional board shout outs to Tiffany for being a service beast, finding many service opportunities for everyone, Brandon and Jarell for

actively planning socials like Nerf Social and Broom Ball Social, Jerry for working on T-shirt orders and always taking minutes, and to Robert for making this beautiful newsletter for all members to enjoy!

Fall Training Conference is an event in the mountains of Sonora to experience and be exposed to what Circle K is really

about! It is a weekend filled with campfire skits and talent acts, member-led workshops, team games, and new member

induction. In Sonora, the members build long-lasting relationships with both new and returning members of our wonderful

district to celebrate our three tenets of service, leadership, and fellowship. Members are exposed to what Circle K is

all about and get exposure to what the organization is on a district level within California, Nevada, and Hawaii. For some, this experience is one of the most memorable and impactful

weekends of their Circle K career. There is so much love, spirit, compassion, and welcome in our district and Fall Training Conference is the place to find that! Here is what some of the

Dear Golden Gate,Your bright eyes and smiles light up my mornings on even a foggy day in the bay. Days could get cold but your mere presence keeps me warm while I am with you. Your touch is… Golden—sending tingles down my spine as I shiver with delight. Your arms are like Gates—always open and so welcoming to those who need a place to stay. GHIRARDELLI CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL

Golden Gate Guardians kicked off a new school year with service on September 27! GG’s September

Divisional Council Meeting (DCM) & Service Marathon began with an early morning environmental project chaired by UCB’s Leon Liang. The remainder of the event took place on UC Berkeley’s campus--first with a large scale icebreaker hosted by UCB’s Philip Nguyen, then some serious service! Past D-KFAM chair and UCLA CKI alum Connie Lam brought several projects to help her Oakland elementary students including alphabet sheets, flashcards, school supply kits, and more! The DCM took place after the service activities. This DCM was particularly exciting because it introduced the new clubs of Golden Gate--Napa Valley College and Solano Community College. Marilyn Nguyen and Joe Samson from NVC were absolutely thrilled to be at their first Golden Gate event! Following the DCM, several Guardians stayed to write letters to soldiers and hospital patients. All in all, the September DCM was a wonderful way for GG to begin the school year! Special shout-outs to UCB’s Cherie Leung and Edison Xu, DVC’s Jasmine Liu, and of course Connie Lam for

planning the service projects.

The September Divisional Service Project was volunteering at the Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival in San Francisco. All

proceeds from this event went to Project Open Hand, which is a non-profit organization that provides meals to senior citizens and the critically ill. Members from the Golden Gate and Sunset Divisions came together and worked various booths giving out chocolates for attendees to enjoy! As a reward for our hard work, the volunteers, were also able to enjoy some free samples at the end of the day! This service project was truly a successful and fun event supporting a meaningful

The Divisional Drive-In Social was a great way to start off the Golden Gate

Weekend of Awesomeness. It was a pretty chill night: a bunch of CKI members in cars and lawn chairs watching movies together. The movies we watched were Book of Life and Dracula Untold. Many of the members that attended told me that it was their first time at a drive-in theater, so it was cool to have this be their first experience. Overall it was a fun and relaxing night. Shout out to special guests from Capital, Kyle Prado and Mo-Kang Ling, and Golden Gate Alumni Stephanie Yu and Katie Fullerton for

coming out!

As the name suggests, the Golden Gate Weekend of Awesomeness was a

weekend of 100% pure awesomeness. There was an event every day that cultivated the selflessness and camaraderie of Circle K members. It began with the Drive-In Social on Friday, then a District-filled Saturday at CKI North, and finished off with the Nike Women’s Marathon on Sunday. This weekend was another amazing display of what Circle K’ers can do as a community, for

On October 18, Golden Gate had the honor of attending CKI North

at Heather Farms Park in Concord. What is CKI North? It is a spirited field day event that raises money for pediatric trauma prevention and the elimination of maternal neonatal tetanus. With home field advantage, Golden Gate members came out in numbers to show that we are a force to be reckoned with. Aside from the competition, this was a chance to meet and mingle with members from the rest of the district, stretching from Central Coast to Capital division. Although Golden Gate did not win CKI North, the real winner was our fundraiser because that was what would make a different at the end of the day. There’s no doubt Golden Gate will pull out all the stops at next year’s CKI

North.

In the very early hours of Sunday, October 19th, Golden Gate convened in the heart of San Francisco and began

assisting marathon runners with their belongings before the start of the race. Assigned to various buses, we partnered up and lifted bags, sweatshirts, water bottles, purses and other items into the buses and placed stickers on the runners’ bibs - providing them with a simple code to help both runners and volunteers find belongings.

The clock wound down, and the race began. Squished into the aisles of the bus, we took a brief nap and

went for a short ride until we arrived near the water’s edge, the area sparkling with flecks of light as the sun began to rise over the city. By this time, the daring runners finished approximately half of their run. As we waited for the runners to collect their items, we mingled with one another inside and outside the buses, taking pictures and socializing until some exhausted individuals approached.

The day passed, and slowly but surely, the lines to collect belongings grew longer and longer. Even with

occasional bag misplacements or seemingly-lost bags, our buses did well, with not a single lost item to report! After assuring that the bags were returned to their rightful owners, we gathered around, took a group picture, and either headed back home, or sought out a place to eat. A number of us enjoyed some Tpumps and pho, while others had some studying before midterms to get to. The day was long, and the sleep was brief, but spending a

day with Golden Gate is always a fun time.

UC Berkeley hosted their second annual Pageant K Fundraiser this past November. Edison Xu from UCB and Jarell Calvin (last year’s winner) from LMC hosted this event and facilitated all

the activities for our seven contestants: Charles Miin (Davis), Sean Yoo (Berkeley), Kalani Murakami (Davis), Kevin Cruz (Merced), Nathan Espiritu (Davis), Donald Franks (Berkeley), and Jerry Bao (Berkeley). The audience witnessed some hilarious talent acts (from health lectures to acts of strength), witty responses to Q&As, ridiculous games, and some seriously sassy strutting. The judges, Alan Perez (Berkeley), Sarah Phan (Berkeley), and Robert Rodriguez (Berkeley), gave laugh-out-loud responses to our candidates and added a nice touch of personality to the event. To conclude the night, Kalani was

crowned Mr. Service; however, everyone was a winner that night!

The 2014 November Golden Coast Divisional Council Meeting, hosted by San Francisco State University, was an afternoon filled with fun games, delicious

food, and bonding activities. We were very happy to welcome our friends from the Central Coast Division for a joint DCM. The attendees mingled through fun activities like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sequence, and karaoke, but the atmosphere became much more serious during our action-packed game of Assassins. The DCM was topped off with a fundraiser where a lucky few had the opportunity to pie their very own President, Lt. Governor, or our own District Treasurer!

RENOVATE EAST OAKLANDPRIDE ELEMENTARY

On the early Sunday morning of November 16th, Golden Gate Guardians were invited by UCLA

CKI alum Connie Lam to East Oakland Pride Elementary for our monthly divisional service project! It was an engaging event coordinated by our division’s wonderful service chair, Tiffany Wong. More than 30 members separated into groups to help the teachers renovate classrooms, storage rooms, and the teacher lounge. Some dusted and wiped an endless amount of counters and shelves, then organized the teachers’ materials. Others were stapling away for hours, moving furniture, throwing away trash, and a few of us even cleaned the teachers’ fridge down to the last spot. If the division raised a dollar for ELIMINATE every time one of us said, “I remember these!” MNT would have probably been cured that day. Everything from the kiddy scissors, incentive star charts, jigsaw mats and colorful pattern blocks were flashbacks to what we used to see ten years ago as kids. This project not only gave the elementary students a better learning environment, but allowed the teachers to come in everyday with a positive outlook. The collaboration between the teachers, the principal and our members for this event was truly fantastic. They had a vision for their school and as volunteers we were able to help them make that vision a reality and so much more. It was quite the productive day for everyone who came and the pizza lunch we had in the end with the staff was the cherry on top of it all!

Annual Broomball

“What is broomball?!” I asked myself when I first saw the word. For about a week leading up to the event, I had so many thoughts and

ideas of what broomball would be like. I initially believed that it was what it sounded like: where each player would have a broom- like the stiff ones you find on the janitor’s cleaning cart, and a hockey puck. It’s silly I know! To my surprise the game was not what I expected, it was so much better and a lot more fun. The game is actually played with a broom-shaped stick, a ball for a puck and no ice skates! It was really great to start off the event with meeting so many people from the different divisional clubs as well as seeing familiar faces! I really enjoyed myself as I went around talking and catching up with some people while exchanging laughs when meeting new people.

Everyone received either a red or blue hockey stick, helmet, and a team—corresponding to your stick’s color and the game finally

started. Although many of us fell every now and then (maybe I did a few more times than others) it was a wonderful experience to see everyone enjoying the game and even seeing some of everyone’s competitive nature. As the game became more exhilarating, another ball

was added to the gameplay, initiating a greater chance for more exciting and exhilarating teamwork. In the end, one team did win, of course we all had lots of fun! We concluded the evening by going for a late-night meal at Denny’s. I wasn’t able to go to last year’s divisional broomball, but as for this year’s broomball—I would say that this has become one of my favorite divisional events and a great first experience. I can’t wait until next year’s Divisional Broomball Social!

With the end of the semester and finals approaching, it was time for the division to take a deep breath and relax at the December DCM, hosted

by Los Medanos College! The DCM, started with some good old-fashioned eating to some Holiday-Themed music. After a few brief announcements, the Holiday Fashion Show

began. Decked out in boughs of holly, members strutted their stuff down the run-way. Afterward, gifts were exchanged and stolen during white elephant. Some sabotage occurred but a good time was had by all.

It was a great way to enjoy company with members from all over Golden Gate. After a day of fun and holiday cheer, everyone went home feeling rejuvenated, ready to take on the end of the semester and finals. Great job to

LMC for hosting an incredibly fun holiday December DCM!

What better way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis than by working on their float in the 2015 Annual Rose Float Parade?

The first night was filled with activities, games, and conversations—everything but sleep! The following morning, we carpooled to the Rosemont Pavilion to begin our work on the floats. We were invited inside and assigned to tasks where help was needed.

Later on, the one-day registration volunteers arrived to replace those who grew tired from the long day. Whether it was climbing on scaffolding, cutting petals for decorations, sorting fruits into patterns, or running flowers up and down to the workers, each job was unique, and as Tuesday night blended into Wednesday morning, the floats came alive with fullness and color.

Around 2am on New Year’s Eve day, we completed some last-minute touches and set off for the church while some decided to get late-night (or is it early-morning?) breakfast at Denny’s or IHOP. Sleepless nights and long days were well worth the

opportunity to celebrate the success of an organization that prides itself in changing the world.

We initially began planning Wintersong Coffeehouse with two goals in mind: to play music and save babies. In the end, we closed the night

with another important achievement, the creation of a warm and welcoming ambiance.

The journey of creating this event was continuous and particularly steep in the final week of preparation. This week consisted of musician and

sponsor confirmations, snowflake making, bakery visits, and shopping. Each day built up more excitement and when the event finally arrived, the fun truly began.

We wanted to create an intimate atmosphere for the audience and performers, and with the help of a handful of friends and fellow Circle K

members, this was achieved. After decorating, the room was unrecognizable under the snowflakes, lights, and candles.

Lovely music completed the effect, with a variety of acts from solo guitar players to saxophones to quartets and quintets of musicians. The audience

listened to music with peppermint hot cocoa and sweets in hand. Between acts, information about the Eliminate Project and magic tricks entertained the audience, and there was a part of the event for everyone to enjoy. We were all able to share music, make friends, and save mothers and babies.

Wintersong’s success has plans for a summer event into action, and Summersong will be another event to remember. #coho2015

To kick off the new year of service, Golden Gate gathered in Oakland to support Casa Segura, an organization dedicated to stopping the

spread of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C in Alameda County. Providing healthcare services to homeless people, drug users, and sex workers, Casa Segura supports a community that “most people don’t want to deal with,” as described by HIV counselor Mike Snow. The clinic offers HIV testing, counseling, and treatment, clean clothes, something to eat, and a safe place to shower.

Over 20 Guardians filled the small office to help pack harm reduction supplies for free distribution at the clinic. These supplies included

new cottons, cookers, and tourniquets to promote safer injection drug use and condoms for protected sex. Even though drug use and sex increase health risk, the reality is that they are still prevalent practices, so at least providing the resources for safe practice is extremely valuable for disease prevention. Thanks to awesome GG workflow, we put together a huge amount of harm reduction kits, which will go a long way to protecting lives.

On January 27, Golden Gate held its very first Nerf Social. Held at Pleasant Hills Park, members enjoyed an energetic

day of adrenaline and socializing under the golden sun.

Several rounds of games were played. In one game, two teams were pitted against each other and had to lead the team’s

captain to the other side of the field without the leader getting hit by the opposing team. Capture the flag was also played and James Seto led his team to victory by sneaking all the way around the field to steal the opponent’s flag. Many battle wounds were acquired but fun was had by all. It was great seeing the assortment of Nerf Guns and seeing everyone having fun and laughing.

After the Nerf games, we had our very first practice in preparation for the DCON Talent Act.

To conclude the evening, we all went to In-N-Out for dinner and to spend even more time with each other. Overall, it was

a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
