IVE been a religious leader for thirty

something years.

And I have a confession to make.

In the rst decade of leading my little

group, Light of Jesus, I had a very skewed

spirituality. I was uptight, rigid, legalistic,

and judgmental.

I never realized that my image of

God was also uptight, rigid, legalistic, and

judgmental. (Truth: We relate to others

according to our image of God.)

My life revolved around trying tofulll very high spiritual expectations to

gain Gods pleasure and approval. Such

as praying one hour a day, and reading

the Bible one hour a day, and going to

Mass every day, and praying the Rosary

everyday, etcetera The list was endless.

Years later, I realized I had a

Just relax in my love. The radical idea

was so foreign to me, I wondered if this

was God at all. How dare He tell me to

relax? How dare He say I was worthy of

love even before I do anything good?

Slowly, I began to realize that God

wasnt uptight. Or rigid. Or legalistic.

Or judgmental.

After three decades, Im still learning

how to relax in His love.

Today, we start a brand new series

titledLifeSavor. Itll rock your world. Ilove its long subhead: Dedicated to the

Approval Addict, the Chronically Nice,

the Spiritually Abusedand Everyone

Themselves More.

think only pure thoughts, be a

good boy, and do my religious

obligations. (Later on, Irealized I felt like a rat running

in a wheel.)

If I failed any of these

stringent requirements I

set for myself, I felt God

was shaking His head

in disgust at me.

But for years, the

real God was gently

knocking into my heart.

And He kept telling me,

No need to perform.

EXPOUNDING on the daysGospel according to John 10:11-18, Fr. Alex Balatbat said thereis only one Good Shepherd: ourLord Jesus Christ.

People tend to claimownership of territories.Politicians say they own the areawhere they won an election. Likea mayor once told Fr. Alex, Visitmy city. Others claim ownershipof their turfs-- preachers, thecommunity they founded; priests,their parishes; and bishops theirarchdioceses. But only Jesuscan duly claim that He owns us,His sheep.

Fr. Alex said no one cantake the place of Jesus Christ.Theres a difference between asubstitute who represents

someone who is absent; and analternate who takes the placeof the absent person. Fr. Alexsaid priests are only substitutes,representing Christ here on Earth;they are not alternates of Jesus.

Fr. Alex said what makesone a good leader is love, quotingBro. Bo Sanchez who said, foryou to become a good leader, youmust be a great lover. Fr. Alexexplained that sheep follow theirshepherd because they know hecares for them and that he willnever harm them. Jesus our Good

Shepherd loves us and it is suchunconditional love which makesus follow Him.

Once, an orator recitedPsalm 23, which starts, TheLord is my Shepherd, there isnothing I shall want. The oratordrew big applause. Then a HolyPriest recited the same psalm.The people did not give him anapplause. They simply fell silent,tears welling in their eyes.

Fr. Alex concluded: Theorator knew his psalm. The Holy

priest knew his Shepherd.

The Good Shepherd

The Theory of ObliquityCONCLUDING theBounce

series, Bro. Bo Sanchez said wecan bounce from our trials anddifculties if we understand theTheory of Obliquity. Obliquitymeans a deviation from a verticalor horizontal line, plane, position,or direction. The Theory ofObliquity proposes the best wayto achieve a goal when you areworking with a complex systemis to take an indirect approachinstead of a direct one. Bro. Bocalled it a detourwhich meansa roundabout way or course,or taking a different course

of action.Bro. Bo related three

stories illustrating a detour.First, the story of Joseph

the Dreamer. Joseph is blessedwith a gift of interpreting dreamscorrectly. He dreams that his

parents and brothers will bow tohim. But Joseph goes througha detour. Envious, his brothers

plot his destruction. They sellhim to a slave trader who bringshim to Egypt where he suffersone trial after another until the

Pharoah nds out Joseph caninterpret dreams. He makesJoseph governor, fullling hisdream.(Genesis37-45).

Second is the story ofSteve Jobs who was red fromthe computer company he himselffounded. He put up anothercompany where he developed theApple computer which revolu-tionized the entire informationtechnology. His old companytook him back and he went on to

become one of the IT icons.Third is the story of

Colonel Harland Sanderswho ran a popular gas stationthat also served food.Then adetour. At age 66, he had toclose shop. He lost everything

but his special chicken recipe.He offered franchising dealswith various restaurants butwhat he got were a total of 1009rejections. Then one restauranttried out his recipe. Now, thereare 15,000 Kentucky FriedChicken restaurants all overthe world.

Bro. Bo explained that God intends for us to be victorious

in life. But trials and difculties block our direct path to gloriousliving. To get to our destiny, Bro. Bo pointed out, we must makea detour. He presented two steps to take during a detour:

1) RemainFaithful. Youmay not be in

the right placenow. But keep

on doing theright thing and

God will in time

give you yourright reward.Your way tothe ladder of
