Have Fun and Be Blessed in the Happiest Place on Earth!

How’s Your Relationship with

“BROTHER BO, why am I unhappy?”The thirtyish woman with short hair and a yellow scarf around

her shoulder looked intelligent, successful, but her eyes were sad. “I mean, I’m supposed to be happy,” she said. “For the first

time in my life, I’m earning a lot of money. I got a new job last year and I got this huge raise. They tripled my salary, Brother Bo. I couldn’t believe it. Plus they gave me a big bonus the day I joined the company. I’m supposed to be ecstatic. But why don’t I feel happy at all?”

I asked my usual “check-up” questions—whether there was anything wrong with her relationships, her marriage, or her spiritual life. I dug deeper and asked about any fear for the future. I even asked about any guilt she’s carrying.

I was shocked when everything about her life was rosy. Everything was doing so well in every department. And she wasn’t aware of any fear or worry that was bothering her.

So it was even more intriguing why she felt unhappy.

And then an idea came to my mind. I asked her, “Are you comfortable with earning a lot of money?” At first, she said yes, but I wasn’t convinced she was convinced with her answer.

Later, I realized that she had a terrible relationship with money. I learned that when she was a child, her parents taught her to look at money with great suspicion. Deep in her subconscious, she believed that money was an instrument of the devil.

As we talked some more, we also discovered that she was more comfortable with poverty than with prosperity. Because of her newfound wealth, she was living in a foreign territory. And anything that was unfamiliar was frightening.

Today, we start a brand new series that will help you have a happy, healthy, and holy relationship with money. You will be set free! I’ve been giving so many financial seminars, I sometimes forget how explosive they are in blessing one’s life.

This month, get ready for financial prisons to vanish from your life!

LAST WEEK

In HIS HOMILY, Fr. Eric Santos said the Gospel focuses on the power of the Scriptures. In Luke 1:1-4. 4:14-21, Jesus goes to the synagogue in his hometown in nazareth and reads Isaiah’s prophecy: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” And then the Lord utters the shortest yet most moving message ever: “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Fr. Eric said this is true because Jesus is the fulfillment of the Scriptures. Fr. Eric added that in the first reading, Ezra the Priest reads the Scriptures and hearing about the scripture on the law, the people cry because they realize their many faults. But they are told, “Do not weep, because this is the day of rejoicing and let your rejoicing be your strength.”

Indeed, the word of God opens our eyes and makes us realize our shortcomings.

Fr. Eric then said we should not keep the Holy Bible in our shelf. Instead, we should bring the Gospel to God’s people who thirst for God’s words.

All of us, including the priests, are being challenged to be animators of the Gospel. The word of God must be shared, ministered, animated, and fulfilled in the life of the people around us.

God’s Words

God’s Promises: Purpose, Progress, PerfectionCAPPING the Guaranteed series, Bro. Bo Sanchez, with Bro. Didoy Lubaton and Bro. Jan Silan, presented three more of God’s Promises:

PurposeBro. Didoy Lubaton

said if your Purpose in life is in accordance with God’s Purpose for His people, then, in His perfect time, your dream will come true.

He related that when he was in high school, he wanted to be a doctor. His parents, however, could not afford to send him to medical school.

He needed P25,000 for his tuition. He hoped against hope that he would fulfill his dream. Then, he met an old professor who promised to pay for his books and uniform. Bro. Didoy was grateful for the blessing. But he still needed money for his tuition.

The last day of enrollment was approaching, and no solution was in sight. Bro. Didoy continued to hang on to his faith, believing that it was in God’s plan to make him a doctor.

A few days before the deadline, he met his mother’s best friend who asked him thrice if he indeed wanted to be a doctor. He kept saying yes. And then she handed him an envelope containing

P25,000. She supported him for two years until his family recovered from their financial crisis and thus could already afford his tuition fee.

He passed the board exams, and was soon offered a chance to undergo internship that would take at least six years.

Earlier, however, he decided that he would focus on three important things: to have fantastic relationships, to be God’s healer, and to be a worshipper of God. If he said yes to the specialty training, he would be a healer, but he would have to postpone, if not altogether forget, about maintaining good relationships and serving as a worship leader.

With a heavy heart, he turned down the training. But since he chose to give top priority to God and his fellowmen, Bro. Didoy soon received more blessings. A friend offered him a job as doctor in a clinic in Makati. Bro. Didoy accepted. The job is not as time-consuming as the internship, so now Bro. Didoy has ample time to bond

ProgressBro. Jan Silan focused

on another promise of God-- in Jeremiah 33:3: “Call to Me, and I will answer you.”

Bro. Jan said in this passage, God promises that if

we trust Him, we can experience progress in our life. Jan said he witnessed this passage at work when he was serving as a youth leader preaching in the national Bilibid Prison. He told the story of an inmate who was given a death sentence. But as the prisoner mustered faith in God, the penalty was changed to life imprisonment, which meant he had a chance for parole.

There are people, however, who do not experience progress in life even as they immerse themselves in prayer and continuous attendance in the Feast. Bro. Jan said, “Maybe there is a missing link…There could never be progress without deliberate action.”

After he graduated from college, he worked as a technical support agent in a call

with his family and friends, and, yes, serve as a worship leader at the Feast.

Bro. Didoy said God’s promise in Jeremiah 29:11 has been so true for him: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

center. He quickly learned the ropes, and then began to feel dissatisfied with his position in the company. He wanted progress, and so he took deliberate action by applying as a team leader.

His application, however, was rejected as he was only 20 years old, still too young to take the lead. It was then that he learned that even if he was doing his best, progress takes time. “Be patient,” Bro. Jan said.

The Feast-Makati Salcedo, headed by Bro. Jan, is an illustration of the rewards of deliberate action and waiting patiently for progress. The Feast had 200 members months ago, but through the team’s perseverance, membership has grown to 400. “Just do your best, and progress will come,” Bro. Jan exhorted.

REFLECTIONS

PerfectionBro. Bo said there are two

kinds of people: Those who are weak and know it, and those who are weak and are not aware of it.

One may begin to ask if there is a person who is not weak. Bro. Bo said there is no one. Every human being has weaknesses.

“It is okay being weak,” he said. “The problem is when we do not know, when we forget that we are weak.” When scandals involving religious leaders show up in the news, people tend to make judgements, forgetting that the leaders are human beings with weaknesses.

“We think perfection is the absence of all weaknesses, but in God’s mind, perfection is the fruit of weakness,” Bro. Bo said. As 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

“Weaknesses are important because these make us vulnerable to grace,” Bro. Bo said.

Bro. Bo noted that his classmates who got good grades were offered good jobs so they became employees. Those who got low grades and thus did not receive any job offer did not have a choice but to put up their own business. The guys with good grades remained employees, while the guys with bad grades became wealthy entrepreneurs.

Bro. Bo declared: “God promises perfection. You will be perfect one day. Just acknowledge your weaknesses, and tell God you need His grace.”

LAST Sunday’s topic at the Feast titled Significance.reminded me of one very important person in my life.

She has already transcended to the next life, and I imagine she is already enjoying the fruits of her lifelong spiritual investment in Heaven. I am referring to my nanay Elen, our yaya, who passed away a year ago, on February 25, 2012.

I came across a letter I wrote 11 months ago, when I was deeply grieving for the loss of nanay, who was with me for 54 years. It was five days after she left us and I felt my heart bursting of so much sadness at the time, that I had to find an outlet. In my reflection, I saw the real essence of what God is saying in the Bible: LOVE, in the purest form.

nanay Elen was not schooled, but in her ways and examples, she taught me, my siblings, and my children the true meaning of service and charity. Aside from my parents and grandparents, nanay has the greatest impact on my life. In her “smallness”, she became an icon.

In my growing up years, I watched her assist Mom manage a household of four kids. She was loving and caring to our needs yet stern and a disciplinarian when it comes to our manners and conduct. And we gave her the same level of respect as we accorded our parents. I grew closer to her because the two of us were the cleaning and cooking partners in our family. She cooked the

best native meals any kid could dream of.

In every milestone of my life, she was there, a silent witness, yet, my staunchest ally and defender. Even in my love life she played a crucial role. She watched with eagle’s eye all my suitors who would come to visit. And she was extra critical of one, the apple of my eye, forewarning me to be careful with curly-haired men.

I lost contact with her for a time when I migrated to Manila for greener pasture and

experienced the liberty of being an adult. But our paths crossed again when I gave birth to a lovely daughter. Since then, she had been with me, as I too raised a family of four bubbly and lively kids, whom she loved and cared for just like us, her original four.

Her life with my own family was a far cry from her life before. She shared the many adventures of travelling and saw many places she never dreamed of to see. Indeed, life was kind to her, she had levelled up. She never stopped saying thank you to us, even in the littlest show of kindness to her. She chose to live her sunset years with my family. She became sickly and we took turns in caring for her. During my birthday on February 16, 2012, she became so alive like her younger days, it made

me very happy. Little did I know, she would be leaving soon. The night before she died, we shared a special ensaymada.

She gave me a wide smile and said,“namit, Day,” (Tastes good, Day), thank you.”

In her death, even my children’s friends grieved, for they too, were recipient of her kindness. For me, nanay Elen was a person of significance because she became the face of Jesus to all of us.

Let me share with you a fragment of my farewell letter:

Nanay Elen, thank you for riding a 54-year journey with me in this life and standing by me even when the roads became rough and bumpy. Thank you for laughing and crying and being with me during hours of triumphs

and failures. Nanay, you were not only a yaya to me. You were a mother, friend, and faithful companion rolled into one. You have sown all your life the seeds of love, care, and selflessness. We could never outdo your kindness, charity, and service.

I will sorely miss your presence, Nanay, but I will continue praying you will reach your final place in heaven where you will be happy in the bosom of God forever. Farewell, Nanay, until we meet again. We love you.

I marvelled at how one person, not even a relative, served three generations of families-- from my Lola, to my mother, and me-- without demanding anything in return.

MINISTRIES‘YOU are People of Significance!’

With these words, Bro. Bo Sanchez encouraged our Ministry heads to fulfill their dreams for Feast PICC in 2013.

Thin sun rays broke through the grayish blue sky. Pine trees stood quietly, as golfers in thick sweaters walked about the sprawling green lawn. Yes, it was cold outside. But inside the conference room, it was heartwarming.

Because when Feast PICC leaders gather together, wherever they are, the place just sizzles with their enthusiasm, their energy, their burning passion to serve the Lord-- and you!

That’s how it was during the Feast PICC Council 2013 Planning Conference held at the Camp John Hay Golf Club last January 22. nope, the leaders didn’t come with golf clubs. They came with laptops or flash drives with their Ministry’s 2013 Plans.

After listening to the leaders’ plans, Bro. Bo, fresh from his talk on Significance, the last of the Feast Guaranteed series, said the leaders indeed live a life of significance as they have been selflessly serving in the Feast, sharing their time, talent, and treasure to give hope to God’s people.

Bro. Rolly España, head of the Feast PICC Council, said the aim of the conference was Synergism-- to consolidate the plans of the various Ministries into one Program of Action for Feast PICC.

“We want to see the Ministry borders disappearing, so that our team becomes cohesive, seamless, no boundaries. We want each Ministry to know what the other Ministries are doing, so that we have just one culture of service for the Lord.”

CARING GROUPS

FInDInG friends who take care of you as you grow in your faith is one of the blessings you receive in a Caring Group. You spend time with your CG friends to share your stories, blessings, and lessons from the Feast and before you know it, your love tank is full. And when you are filled with love, you are ready to spread love to the world.

An example of such is a CG composed of orphanage volunteers. They go on outreach missions to Feast Partner Beneficiaries-- Tahanan ng Pagmamahal, an orphanage; Grace To Be Born, a shelter for women in crisis; and the Anawim Home for Abandoned Elderly.

“I love the orphans. I have an ultimate dream for them,” said Lyn Chua, CG head of the orphanage volunteers. They are around 40 in the group, working in various industries like medicine, academe, and business. Some have been in the group since 2011. They meet

Where Love OverflowsBy BEThANY ANNE P. DEChAvEz

every Sunday and keep in touch through text messages and Facebook.

Lyn describes her CG members as cooperative and supportive in achieving a dream. “They are loving, caring, and down-to-earth in every outreach we made,” Lyn said.

In addition to their outreach activities, the CG members also conducted painting lessons at Tahanan ng Pagmamahal and held a

fund raising concert for the orphans last summer. This year, they are planning for a retreat and outings aside from their outreach activities.

“CG is the place where you can find compassion, praying, worshipping, praising together,” Lyn said. She is super blessed with her CG family and tells them, “We are not perfect. We know our flaws. But one thing is for sure: against all odds, trial, hurts, burden, persecutions, we still rise as champions. I am very proud of you. We all have experienced

one of the greatest miracles in our life. Thanks so much for sharing that moment. Thank you for sharing your love, time, treasures, and talents for a dream come true.”

To those who are yet to sign up for a CG, Lyn says, “Join a CG now and experience how to be blessed to have a friend, a family who will love you unconditionally and always be praying for you.”

Father and SonBy MARTHINA G. SALOME

It’s not time to make a change, just relax, and take it easy...

- from the song Father and Son by Cat Stevens

CAT STEVEnS’s song may well be the song for Roberto Lee.

Inheriting the business skills of his Chinese father, Antonio, Robert, now 41 years old, is a successful businessman.

In 1994, his dad told him, “Robert, I am sending you to China to help me protect the family’s interest in some of my investments there.”

“Ahh, yes Papa,” he answered just to please the old man.

Robert resigned from his work and reluctantly flew to China.

He was miserable in that farflung place, to say the least. He was young, alone, and felt alienated. He didn’t know any Chinese dialect.

He always made long distance calls to his mom, telling her, “I want to go home.”

But one thing good came out of this trial. He had bonding moments with his father. They saw each other four or five times a year, and on these visits, they talked-- about life, business, dreams,

In time Robert learned Mandarin and following his conversations with his dad, he began to appreciate Chinese culture and values.

“I could say those moments with him was the start of our close father-son relationship,” he recalled.

During the 1997 global economic crisis, Robert’s family business started to slowdown and by year 2000, the family decided to sell their shares to their Chinese partners. Finally, Robert came back home to the Philippines.

Alas, in 2008, his dad was diagnosed with liver cancer. He was initially treated at a hospital in Manila but after a few months, following the advice of his friends, his father decided to go to China for treatment. After

two years, Robert’s father succumbed to liver cancer in April 2010.

After the death of his father, Robert spent his time more often with his mom, sisters, and friends and got pre-occupied with his business. His spiritual life wasn’t a

priority to him anymore and, he admitted, he missed a lot of Sunday Masses

In 2008, Robert separated from his wife and two children. He began to join other religions such as the Brahma Kumaris in Tagaytay. Then, he met other groups and a pastor from a Methodist church and attended the pastor’s prayer meetings.

Through those days, he kept on hearing about Bro. Bo Sanchez. He read some of Bo’s books. Then he decided to attend the Feast on September 16, 2012. “Since then I never missed a Feast.” he proudly said. “I have love attending the Holy Mass, because we really have very good priests. I can understand and appreciate the Good news more.”

Robert said now he is a new person. “God is in control of my life and so I don’t have to worry about anything anymore, ” he said.

He has learned to be grateful even at times of adversities. He smiles a lot now since he keeps in his heart what he has learned at the Feast.

He had found the best Father-- our Father in Heaven, and Robert is glad to be called, “My son.”

BONDING. Robert with dad Antonio, and with their family.

FORMATION MINISTRY: CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

CALLInG Feast attendees who have a passion for learning and teaching.

Come, join the Feast PICC Formation Ministry!

ATTEnDInG the weekly Feast has brought many changes in my family, work, and spiritual life. But apart from all these blessings there was one thing I lacked – a better relationship with my relatives. I’d been so busy, I rarely met with them.

Following Bro. Bo Sanchez’s teaching that God wants us to establish good relationships, I decided to have a regular meeting with my two cousins, Candy and nandie, who were my best friends when we were teenagers. Last Saturday, I scheduled a breakfast meeting to celebrate my birthday with them in a restaurant in Cubao.

With a tight budget, I could only choose from three restaurants. Unfortunately, the first, which was classy but affordable, was closed that day. I was left with just the two other options – the second was a fastfood restaurant, and the third, fine dining.

I was like, “These are my best cousins, I should treat them to good food.” So I chose the third option, hoping against hope I won’t bust my budget.

As we started to order our food, I saw an old colleague come into the restaurant

with a friend. We greeted each other and then the two sat on a table in one corner of the restaurant.

I had a great time with my cousins. We were like teenagers again-- chatting, laughing.

After a while, my colleague came up to me to say goodbye.

“nice to see you again,” he said. “By the way, I already paid for your bill.”

I couldn’t believe it. There I was anxious about my budget, but little did I know, God had already sent a colleague of mine to pay for my bill!

In the Feast, I have learned that if you follow God’s commands, He will honor your effort and bless you. I struggled to obey His command to establish good relationships. And what do you know, He paid for my expenses.

God be praised.
