THE ECHO JAN. - MAR. 2018
Greetings fellow 1504 Knights,
With 2017 safely behind us let us
take a collective moment to reflect on
Council 1504’s achievements this
past year. Once again I can’t help but
marvel at all the activities our Coun-
cil cheerfully and magnificently un-
dertook this past year. We are truly
blessed with many talented members
and I’d like to take this opportunity
to acknowledge and thank each and
every brother who gave of their valu-
able personal time this past year “for
the good of the order.”
There can be no dispute that our con-
certed Knightly efforts really do mat-
ter and really do make a positive dif-
ference in our community. We do vir-
tuous work, God’s work, and this is
one of the reasons why I became a
Knight in the first place. It does my
heart good to see that our gentleman-
ly efforts are helping others and are
truly being appreciated.
This marks the last quarter for me as
your Grand Knight and I must tell
you the first 1.5 years has flown by.
Many of you who regularly attend
our monthly General Meetings know
what my five fraternal objectives
have been. They include:
- Create additional social/family val-
ued events;
- Membership reintegration – reach-
ing out to Brother Knights in good
standing not currently active and to
some that have left our Order;
- Membership recruitment - 24 new
members this year is our goal to ob-
tain the Star Council Award;
- Create and enhance our community
partnerships
- Keep the momentum of our vibrant
and active 107+ year old Council vig-
orous and strong.
I think you would agree that we have
and continue to accomplish these
goals and I thank each of you for
your efforts at helping to do this!
In closing, I want to extend my wish
to each of you and your families for a
cheerful, healthy and prosperous
2018. This will no doubt be another
exciting year of personal and Knight-
ly challenges for each of us. Let us
rise to these encounters with a smile
and peace in our hearts. Until the
spring edition of this newsletter, may
the love of God be with you and may
you enjoy all that our Canadian win-
ter has to offer.
Fraternally yours,
Dave Obermeyer,
Grand Knight

Obermeyer GRAND KNIGHT
Dear Knights and friends,
Happy 2018! I still remember The turn of the new millennium and the Y2K computer
scare! I was a priest for about a year and a half at that point. Nothing much came of the
dreaded change, as computer’s internal clocks changed over from 1999 to 2000. It was
feared that some major software was based on counting years with only the first two dig-
its. 1999 was represented as 99 and the next year would become 100 instead of reverting
to 00 to represent the year 2000. The fear of banking transactions and security grinding
to a halt; the fear of wide spread power outages was real – all because of how we choose to
reference a starting point for measuring time. And now we are 18 years further into the third millennium!
The world’s common reference point for the beginning of our yearly time keeping is roughly the time of Christ’s
birth give or take a few years. Ancient history like that of the Egyptians or the Etruscans is commonly referenced
as counting down to a year – zero. We then start to count back up again to our present day. That year zero, an
origin, is located at the Son of God’s decisive entry into human history. Whether people believe Christ or not;
whether they centre their lives on Jesus or not, isn’t it interesting that most of the world measures the passage of
time in reference to Jesus Christ! Many calendars, computer programs and business transactions count time from
the event of the Incarnation!
We have celebrated Christmas and the gift of ‘Emmanuel’ – ‘God with us’. Jesus assured us that he would be with
us till the end of time. As we begin 2018, let us take confidence from the simple counting of time throughout the
world that Emmanuel has been with us for over 2000 years! Let us resolve anew to settle our lives, our families,
our fraternities, our parishes, our work and our world in our Lord and Saviour who continues to sanctify human
history.
God bless,
Fr. Larry Council 1504 Chaplain

JAN. - MAR. 2018 THE ECHO PAGE 3
Greetings Brother Knights,
Christmas is here again — this is the
time when we should look back to
what we accomplished in the year of
2017.
I think in previous Echo’s we updat-
ed our membership very well with
what we had done in the first part of
the year. In September and October
our artistically gifted Brothers put in
countless hours cutting and painting
Christmas holiday decorations. In
late November and now in December
we are visiting the churches trying to
sell more articles to enable us to help
the needy.
Council 1504 was able to get into the
Christkindl market — many thanks
to everybody who gave up their time
to help. Another group was putting
the final touches on organizing the
second annual Trivia Challenge. The
show was on November 11th, and
was well attended and very well or-
ganized. Marillac place will receive
financial help.
Also, we honored our Brothers who
passed away in the last 12 months.
In the month of November, we were
collecting coats and other warm
clothing for kids. This was the third
year for this program and it contin-
ues to grow. The collected clothes are
being offered to the Waterloo Region
Catholic Schools. Anything left over
will be given to the Region Welcome
Center.
Finally I wish all of my Brother
Knights and their families a Merry
Christmas and Happy 2018.
Vivat Jesus,
DGK Mike Szabo

Ho! Ho! Ho! KITCHENER, ONTARIO – DECEMBER 8, 2017
Santa and Mrs. Claus were a big hit at the K of C 2017 Children’s
Christmas Party at St. Francis Parish Hall with over 30 children
and their parents attending. There was face painting, cookie deco-
rating, a prize table, games and Santa who had gifts for all the
children. Thank you to Brother Wayne and Marilyn Curry for or-
ganizing and for all who volunteered their time to make the Chil-
dren’s Christmas Party a success. Santa says he’s coming back
next year!

St. Anne’s Annual Spread
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – NOVEMBER 8, 2017
Although there were lower numbers this year, the
Annual St. Anne’s Spaghetti dinner was a success
Saturday November 4th as everyone who attended enjoyed the Italian menu. A large contin-
gent of Brother Knights from Council 1504 helped make light work of serving and clean - up.
The following Knights, Gerry Kelly, Brian Schmalz, Chester Niewadomski, Manfred Aulich, Pe-
ter Penlington, Reinhart Schreiter, Sean Meaney, Wayne & Sandy Keffer, and Pat McGrath,
made enough food for 80 people. The House of Friendship was the recipient of the remainder of
the spaghetti and meat sauce. Everyone now looking forward to next year’s repast.
The 108-year-old history and reputa-
tion of The Kitchener Knights of Co-
lumbus, Council 1504, have been
widely renowned as an organization
that succeeds in whatever community
fund-raising event it produces.
You too can become
part of its success.
The Knights are Catholic men, 18 years
of age and older, who are committed to
making their community a better place,
while supporting their church. We meet at the Knights Hall the
third Tuesday of each month at 797 Guelph Street Kitchener.
Be a part of this vibrant membership and
belong to an organization that makes a difference.

‘Tis the Season
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – NOVEMBER 13, 2017
A wide selection of K of C produced
Christmas Nativity Scenes, decorations
and, new this year, attractive and fes-
tive sculptures were displayed at the
Annual Schwaben Club’s Christmas Ba-
zaar on Sunday, November 12. On
hand were PGKs Brothers Brian
Hughes, Reinhart Schreiter, Gerry
Kelly and Brian Schmalz who were ac-
cepting sales and fielding inquiries.
Overall sales to date have covered the
costs the Bazaar table and the
Christkindl Market booth. The exposure
of the K of C ornaments at the Bazaar
has sparked interest in several poten-
tial customers. It’s expected sales of the
popular decorations should match or
surpass those of last year.
2017 Knights of Columbus Memorial Mass
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – NOVEMBER 13, 2017
The Annual Knights of Columbus Memorial Mass was held at Blessed
Sacrament Parish on Sunday, November 12th. The celebration honours
those Brother Knights from Council 1504 who have passed away this past
year. The families from 12 deceased Knights were recognized and were
presented with a Memorial Plaque by Grand Knight Dave Obermeyer and
Council 1504 Chaplin Fr. Larry Parent. Assisting at the Mass were sev-
eral members from Council 1504, while serving as the Honour Guard
were 4th Degree members Sir Knights Mike Szabo, Whit Husk, Frank
Troupe. Pat McGrath and Jim Padgett. Following the ceremony, every-
one enjoyed a delightful reception hosted by Father Larry.

Put it to good use
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – NOVEMBER 22, 2017
Thinking of disposing of that out-of-date computer,
worn-out television or that broken electronic game?
Put it to good use and donate it to the Knights of
Columbus. Included in today’s e-waste are comput-
ers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax ma-
chines are common electronic products. When dis-
carded electronics are recycled, Council 1504 will
receive some needed funds to aid in their charitable
works. Watch for the K of C Annual Big Spring
Cleanup for e-waste and scrap metal coming in
May. Can’t wait, drop by 797 Guelph Street and
chuck it in the green e-waste bins beside the K of C
Hall. You’ll feel better and so will we.
K of C Publicity
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – NOVEMBER 22, 2017
Just a week before the November 11 K of C Trivia Challenge to support Marillac Place, the hostel suf-
fered a serious dilemma, a damaging flood that caused an evacuation. Thinking that perhaps media cov-
erage could help promote the event to increase aid Marillac Place for Council 1504, it began with a phone
call to the 570 News Department. A suggestion was made to have coverage on the Marillac Place flood
hoping to also get some K of C Trivia Challenge publicity. As it happened, that call morphed into a 30-
minute appearance on the Jennifer Campbell show where the Knights of Columbus was promoted along
with the Trivia Challenge fundraiser for Marillac Place. Sitting in for Ms Campbell was Jeff Pickel
where he and Brother Gary Megaffin, during the interview, fielded answers to some trivia questions
posed to the listening audience. The Rogers media group in Kitchener has always been a big supporter
of the Kitchener Knights of Columbus.
To Market to Market We Go
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – DECEMBER 14, 2017
The brisk winter weather didn’t deter shoppers at
this year’s edition of the Christkindl Market. A
busy four days produced successful sales of the K of
C Nativity Scenes and other festive decorations.
Something new this year was a selection of religious
themed sculptures by renowned artist Timothy P.
Schmalz. Sales figures from the K of C booth for the
four days amounted to over $750 dollars. Many
thanks go to organizer Brother Mac Graham and
the tireless volunteers who braved the elements at
this year’s event. Sales associates included GK Dave Obermeyer, PGK Brian Schmalz, Mike Wilhelm,
Steve Constant, Wayne Keffer, Mario Peretti, Frank Shewchuk, Hank Helmond, Max Salman, Rodolfo
Bittar, Fred Greidanus, Mike Begin, Sean Meaney, Dave Hudder, Reinhart Schreiter, DGK Mike and

A Winning Night for Marillac Place
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – NOVEMBER 23, 2017
Congratulations go to “The Long and The Short of It” — the winning
Trivia Challenge team scoring the highest number of points in the
Knights of Columbus 2nd Annual K-W Great Trivia Challenge. A well-
done goes to Steve & Annette Shute, Sean Hughes, Vedrana Muftic, Mar-
garet Hughes, Brian Hughes Jr., Kelly Walberg, Bobby Taylor and Brian Hughes. The action was held
November 11 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in support of Marillac Place. Sixteen teams battled for boasting
rights and the championship trophy answering 75 skill-testing questions. As fate would have it, Marillac
Place suffered a debilitating flood which caused the evacuation of their building days before the K of C
event. Fortunately, the fun-filled night raised almost $11 thousand dollars to aid in their recovery. A
successful evening was achieved with special thanks going to the following Council 1504 Brothers for
their help….
Brian Schmalz – Co-Event Chair and Prize Table Organizer Extraordinaire
Ted Jasica – Chief Question Writer and Key Donor
Peter Penlington – Master Auctioneer and Chief Trouble Shooter
Manfred Aulich – Master Fundraiser
Joseph Goodwin – Master of the Power Point
Frank Troupe and Fernando Melo – Protectors of the Trophy
Gary Megaffin – Master of Media Relations
Marillac Place will receive the much-needed funds to aid in renovating their building following that disas-
trous flood. The fund-raising event was successfully achieved through the efforts of several dedicated
Trivia Night volunteers….

bigger and better, anticipating an increase in the number of teams challenging for the desired first-place
trophy.
Mass-goers marvel at K of C decorations
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – DECEMBER 14, 2017
A wide selection of the K of C Nativity Scenes and
other festive decorations were prominently dis-
played at several Kitchener parishes this year. Fol-
lowing Masses, sales were brisk as church-goers
marvelled at the unique ornaments. Over $4,000
dollars was raised through sales made possible by
those Brothers who were members of the respective
parishes. The wide selection of ornaments was
carefully constructed by Council Elves Brian
Hughes, Brian Schmalz, Wayne and Marilyn Curry, Michael and Elenoare Olinski, Fernando Melo,
Wayne Keffer and Steve and Nancy Constant.

Coats for Kids 2017 KITCHENER, ONTARIO – DECEMBER 21, 2017
Numerous families raising young children today can some-
times find they are financially challenged providing winter
wear for their youngsters. As the 2017 winter season be-
gins in full swing, once again the Kitchener Knights of Co-
lumbus will be helping by providing warm winter coats to
children through our Coats for Kids program. Many do-
nations helped to support this K of C program to meet
their needs. Hard working organizer DGK Brother Mike
Szabo says over 400 warm winter coats, mittens and
scarves have been collected during the 2017 Campaign.
Also a good supply of baby clothes were received, then do-
nated to Marillac Place where they’ll be put to good use. A
number of Kitchener Parishes cooperated with the Kitche-
ner Knights of Columbus to collect winter apparel by pro-
moting the drive in their parish bulletins. The warm win-
ter-wear will be distributed to those youngsters in need.
We hope our gift will bring warmth to the bodies, hearts
and souls of these precious young people.
For over 25 years, Timothy P. Schmalz has been sculpting large scale sculptures, devoted to creating artwork
that glorifies Christ. A St. Jacobs resident, Timothy is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1504. The
reason for his devotion, apart from his Christian beliefs, is that an artist needs an epic subject to create epic art.
Timothy describes his sculptures as being visual prayers. He is a figurative artist with his pieces installed
worldwide. Some of his most reputed pieces are installed in historical churches in Rome and at the Vatican.
Timothy describes his most important work as visual translations of the Bible. Although most of his work is
based upon a spiritual theme, he also creates large, complex public sculptures in bronze. Some of these include
monuments that honour veterans and firefighters. Timothy strives to create epic artwork that connects with
viewers through design and details that not only touch the viewer on an emotional level, but also allow them to
feel somewhat a ‘part’ of the piece. Saint Gregory the Great wrote that “art is for the illiterate”; the use of imag-
es was an extremely effective way to educate the general population. Please email Brian Schmalz at
[email protected] if you are interested in any of these beautiful statues by Timothy P. Schmalz.
