A01B-The Descent-Editing

Kashmire Hawker

The 3 second frame states that the family are heading back home following their day out. The speeding element would suggest that they are in a hurry. The shot is at first view a Close-Up which then goes to a Medium & finally Long; all those shots are also Wide as a large bit of the surroundings are seen within the frame.

This 8 second frame shows a conversation between the Mum & the daughter about inviting a friend around for her birthday party. The shots are Close Up’s & Over-The-Shoulder which gives an indication of the seriousness of the conversation.

This 5 Second frame shows Paul driving with him not interested about the family matters being discussed. This is a Side On view which indicates his anger by the loom on his face.

This 8 Seconds Frame shows the end of the conversation between the Mum & Daughter with her asking why he’s quiet. All of the time, this is a Point of View shot from the front of the car which gives a clear sense of what’s being said and of the problems that lie within the trio.

These 4 second shots shows a huge lack of concentration between the pair as the white van approaches with speed. This is despite the pair only talking for about a second.

The shot is Point of View from the perspective of the Daughter who begins to know that something isn’t quite right between Mum & Dad.

This 1 Second shot shows the impact of the crash which sees 2 big poles shatter through the car window. There however, a 3rd, constructed pole can be seen within the back of Paul’s seat to show the physical impact the accident has had on him. Also, there is ha big amount of CGI (Computer Generated Images) showing blood within the car.

This is a Close-Up shot showing Paul trying to duck away from the pole, which is actually a rod.

This 1 Second Shot, shows one of the poles going directly through the head of the daughter & the seat. Again, the blood is CGI but the hole within the seat is a real impact.

This is a Point of View shot from the perspective of the back of the car and really brings home what has just occurred.

This 18 Second shot shows the impact of the crash from a crane, very slowly.

The Crane Shot which eventually becomes Wide shows extensive CGI (Not within these small pictures) including more of the blood shown in earlier slides.

In Summary of each frame, it demonstrates the extremely bad relationship within the family & the shots from with in-it confirm this.

Why the elements were usedThe elements used within the editing of the film is one of the main reasons for me why The Descent brought in the revenue it did. The analysis from the scene in this presentation makes it clear that the use of all aspects of the film gave it that extra advantage and as a result ensured that the viewer would get those extra fright moments.
