elcome to the December (and dare I say, Christmas) edition of the Scene. What a great time of the year! It is definitely one of my favourite times and not just because of Christmas, but because people are high spirited and fun loving.....which is

really encouraging after the tough year we have all had.

In this issue we have lots of features to entertain you: We have the first part of our history of the Priory Church in Deeping St James (this will be followed up in the January edition); We have details on local Christmas festivals as well as the 10th

anniversary of the Market Deeping Town Council Christmas Market, which will be held on the Market Square on the 28th November with the lights switch on at 3.30pm; there are interesting reviews this month to include books, travel and the Alfa Berera; plus we have hot tips about Christmas dieting and some great beauty tips - that we probably

already know about, but just forget to do!

The Rotary International End Polio Now Campaign, is about to begin and as a part of this campaign, the DEEPINGS will be blooming with over 3,000 purple crocus bulbs in the month of February. The plantation of bulbs aim at collecting money for the campaign and spreading awareness to wipe out polio from the globe in the coming years. The sponsorship of bulb plantation costs 20p and the raised money will be increased two-fold by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. By planting a significant number of crocuses in October, Rotary International will endeavour to break the Guinness world record. Hainsworth, Lee Coupland, Phil “Dr Who” Vaughan, Wayne Elliott and Phil Mills, eight rugby players from Deepings Rugby Union FC came together to form two teams ‘Subsido Tactus’ (crouch, touch) & ‘Exspecto Fides’ (pause, engage) to compete in the 2010 Sucata Run, a European charity banger rally tour from France to Portugal over August Bank Holiday (26th - 30th 2010). The Sucata Run is a bargain basement banger rally tour where teams drive to Europe’s most westerly point in 4 days, in bangers costing no more than £250

Unlike other European banger rallies, 100% of the money teams raise goes directly to charity. Gemini brings together over 60,000 children in 114 countries to tackle the world’s biggest problems such as malaria, HIV/Aids, human rights and conflict resolution.

The tour kicked off in Normandy’s stunning capital, Rouen, and cars rattled their way through 2000km of the most stunning scenery to Europe’s most westerly point, Cabo da Roca. Through the vineyards of Bordeaux and the desertscapes of Spain to cross the finish line on the sumptuous Portuguese coast.

For the players, the rally started last September, 2009, when they managed to purchase two London Fairway Driver black cabs. Work started on preparing the vehicles and over the following ten months the team spent their spare time, grinding, cutting welding, painting re-wiring and pimping their rides for the journey. Inevitably though there was still the odd breakdown or two on the way

Team leader for Subsido Tactus, Mark “Bigshow” Owen said, “It was great fun to take part in what turned out to be quite a feat of endurance, although fun it was hard work. We had our fair share of breakdowns but fortunately nothing too serious and we were able to nurse the cars back to Deepings for a well earned rest.

In total 32 cars took part in the rally, we funded the cars, our travel and our accommodation ourselves, so everything we raised went straight to Gemini, we are waiting to have it confirmed but we believe we raised the most money before we set off with £1,685. We can’t thank everyone that donated enough.”

The new Health & Social Care Act 2008 comes into force in October 2010 for Care Homes. The new act brings with

it many changes in the private health care sector, especially care homes looking after vulnerable adults such as the elderly. Its main principles are to ensure that the safety, welfare, rights, dignity and independence of people is both promoted and protected. If you have lost weight during the past year, you will probably not want to undo all your hard work and put it back on again during the festive season. Eating and drinking with friends and family are an important part of Christmas and you don’t want to be a ‘diet bore’. The first thing to remember is that any fat gained during a few days of over indulgence will be ‘soft’ fat and easier to get off again than the hard, compacted fat that has been on your body for years. When it comes to food shopping, plan your meals and buy what you need, plus a little extra (for unexpected guests) that can be frozen. Most people buy too much at this time of year and you want to avoid waste that ends up on your waist! Get a few healthy nibbles that the whole family can

enjoy. Stick strictly to your diet for as long as possible – up to Christmas Eve if you can. Enjoy your special meals on Christ-mas Day and Boxing Day and then try to resume healthy eating until any special events for the New Year. Don’t starve your-self in advance of your main meals, as this will slow down your metabolism and affect blood sugar levels. Have some breakfast, and maybe a starter of grapefruit, melon or clear soup at your main meal. Eat slowly, so that your body recognises when it is full. Although having serving dishes on the table is more elegant, if you dish up in the kitchen, you will avoid the temptation of second helpings that you don’t really need. If you have your main meal at lunchtime, why not have a break after the main course and go for a long walk before it gets dark. This will also help young children let off steam and prevent them getting restless at the table. Make sure you clear away leftovers to prevent nibbling. We have a tradition of ‘waste not want not’ when it comes to food; most children are encouraged to clear their plate – ‘think of all the children starving in Africa’ or ‘there won’t be any pudding if you don’t eat your first course’. This is laudable in many ways, but it destroys our natural instinct to stop eating when we have had enough. The South Lincolnshire village of Deeping St. James may only have an approximate population of 7,000

but the area boasts a lengthy and equally wonderful history that is appreciated by both residents and visitors alike.

When the Domesday Book was unveiled in 1086 the first reference to the village and neighbouring Market Deeping was made. At the time, both locations were simply known as “West Deeping”.

One major historical feature is the breathtaking Priory Church that is over 850 years old and measures in at a staggering 180 feet (55 yards), making it the largest church located within the Deepings.

Despite the large building that still stands proudly today, architectural studies indicate that the church was in fact a lot smaller to begin with but a population boom led to expansions being made approximately 50 years after its creation.

The First Deeping Church According to the Domesday Book there were several churches in the Lincolnshire area (Tallington and Baston) in 1086, but a recent study of ancient monastic chronicles have indicated that no such religious structures existed until around 1120. This was when Richard de Rulos (chamberlain to William the Conqueror) raised the profile of St. Guthlac’s Chapel in Market Deeping, until it was officially recognised as a church.

With De Rulos dedication, land was being made available specifically for the development of new religious settlements and it wasn’t long before the Priory (designed to worship the Benedictine Order) was constructed.

History of the Priory Church Church visitors are often surprised by the sheer size of the building and this is because when it was founded by Baldwin Fitzgilbert de Clare in 1139, it once served its purpose as part of a large Benedictine Priory. On July 25th (St. James’ Day) of the same year, the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Lincoln.

Throughout the 13th and 14th centuries some monastic housings starting losing influence and the church soon became an individual entity after the Priory was dissolved in 1539. Large parts of the building fell into ruin and it wasn’t until the 17th century that some of the stonework was used to construct several dwellings (including a manor house) in the local area.

It was towards the end of the 15th century that King Henry VII’s mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort inherited a number of manors in Bourne and Deeping, but she was specifically interested in the Priory Church. It was later arranged that the brothers (figures suggest that there were no more than 5 or 6 at any time) were granted the right to have a mill of their own - which brought in a substantial income and in return, Lady Beaufort was mentioned in regular prayers.

Another turning point for the church was that Lady Beaufort became the founder of a preachership at Cambridge University (a decision which was partly influenced by John Fisher, her confessor) and this involved the post holder conducting sermons at least six times a year, in selected churches. The Priory was one of them.

The Church Spire

Throughout the centuries, the Priory Church has seen a number of alterations being carried out, but none proved to be more essential than replacing the ruined spire in the 18th century.

It was in 1717 that the tower collapsed, due to the foundations becoming rotten after years of flooding and during this time help from other parishes was sought in order to raise funds to rectify the damage. The time came towards the start of 1730 and this is the spire that can still be seen today, up to ten miles away.

Natural ingredients can be a life saver. You don’t need to break the bank to look beautiful, as ingredients such as sea salt can be just as good as expensive

brands. Use sea salt to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells in the shower. Alternatively, mix coffee grounds with salt and rub all over the body to exfoliate. Rinse off, moisturise and your skin will be soft and supple.

And finally, sleep! Your body needs time to restore itself and take a rest, so you should aim to get at least 8 hours every night. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and revitalised

It is a well known fact that most people never get around to making their Wills, however there are certain families where a Will is the most important document that they can possibly make.

This month we look at families with Children with Special Needs and Disability one of the key worries for parents is what will happen to my child when I am no longer around to care for them. Sadly the answer is all too often in the hands of the local authorities, and a key area of planning for the child’s future therefore needs to be what happens to the money that they might inherit.

For a family member with a disability inheriting money can cause problems with any means tested benefits they may be receiving as well as the nature of their care package if the financial position changes. However with the right planning and the use of a carefully constructed Special Needs Trust you can protect a child and their inheritance throughout their lifetime.

• Setting up a trust means you can leave money for a family member with a learning disability without them having to

worry about the responsibility of looking after it in their lifetime. It is also a way of avoiding applications to the Court of Protection for a deputy to be appointed to deal with their finances if they are not able to manage looking after the money themselves.

• If an adult child with a learning disability is, or is likely to be, entitled to means-tested state funding in the future, they can be a beneficiary of a discretionary or a disabled person’s trust. This means the money that they get from the trust fund will not be included when they are being assessed. This is not true for all trusts – so it is very important that you discuss the specific issues with a professional.

• By putting money into a trust for a person with a learning disability, you can make the money available for them in their lifetime should they need it, for example for holidays, equipment or healthcare. You can also dictate where the money should go on their death.

Thousands of pounds have been raised for the armed forces charities after Comptonsorganised a ball in Peterborough.

Rebecca Compton of relocate2here and Russell Compton of Comptons property agents organised the event at the Marriott hotel in Peterborough and collected more than £12000.0 for the good causes.

Most of the money will go to the household cavalry operational casualties’ fund, which provides financial support to injured servicemen and women.

Mrs Compton chose the charity because her brother, Warren Douglas, is captain in the household cavalry regiment, based in Knightsbridge in London.

The rest of the cash will go to the Help the Heroes charity, which also helps those injured while serving for their country.

Capt. Douglas, 45, who joined the forces at 15, served in the first gulf war, and most recently in Afghanistan, was amongst the guests,

Singer Sonja Salmon, whose husband is awarrant officer at RAF Wittering, provided the entertainment.

Last year The Bohemians packed out The Corn Exchange at Bourne and they’re back there on Friday, December 3 to rock you all over again with their stage show featuring all the big hits and album favourites from Queen backed with a dazzling light show and pyrotechnics.Support act on December 3 is PowerSurge, a young, local band who formed in October 2008 while still at primary school. Their line-up is: Ben (vocals), Will (drums), AJ (bass/guitar/backing vocals), Bailey (bass guitar and Josh (keyboards) - and they are still only 12 years old!
