July is certainly all about relaxation. School and fellow university leavers should take this moment to rejuvenate, while those at work are most likely on the count down to their own summer holiday. But for now, sit back, relax and enjoy reading the first edition of Discovering Deeping, to take a well-deserved mini-break.

Our July issue has a variety of interesting articles. In this issue, we show an insight into our local businesses, and discover what makes them so special. For example, we have followed the ‘from field to fork’ journey at The Iron Horse Ranch House, and learnt how their delicious meals are sourced from local farms. Sally Dilks from Buckles solicitors also informed us of her tips about buying property abroad, for our readers that are feeling slightly adventurous this month. Alternatively, Crowland Carpets told us about the latest home wear trends for readers that are buying a new property in The Deeping’s

and surrounding areas, or for those who are simply redecorating. As you will see, there are a variety of articles in this magazine, which showcases the vast range of services and things to do here in The Deepings and the surrounding areas. I hope that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

This issue is best enjoyed outside, in a peaceful place, while relaxing in the sun (choice of beverage is optional – Pimms anyone?).

Once again, thank you to everyone involved in the Discovering Deeping team for your hard work!

Please feel free to send your feedback to Leanne at [email protected]. For exclusive sneak-peaks into the monthly issues, please like us on facebook.com/DiscoveringDeepingMagazine, and follow us on Twitter @DiscoverDeeping.

Staff believe that order and respect are at the heart of creating a climate for success; the school insists on smart uniform, good behaviour and politeness. In turn, this underpins the aim of enabling students of all abilities to discover and develop, not only their academic potential, but also their creative and sporting talents. As an Enterprise Academy, The Deepings School is committed to ensuring that students are positive leaders, strong problem-solvers, and that they develop the life-skills required to prepare them for life after school. To support this, work experience opportunities are provided for students in KS4 and KS5.

Students make excellent progress and achieve strong exam results, which are consistently above national averages. Many students choose to stay on in the Sixth Form, and the overwhelming majority proceed to university.

The school is a safe place. Students belong to a College (Guthlac, Welland or Priory), which provides many

opportunities for participation and fosters a genuine sense of belonging. Each college has a ‘base’ within the school site, and its own pastoral and administrative staff. Each College Team ensures that students enjoy the choice and resources of a larger school, along with the supportive atmosphere of a smaller one.

Students are provided with a world-class learning environment. Over recent years there has been a new Sixth Form Centre and Conference Centre, with a fantastic state-of-the-art Science Centre, due to open this September. Funding has also been secured for a Design, Technology and Art Centre. Major investment in information technology also provides the school community with top class computing facilities and services.

With the school being judged by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’ for the second time, strong teaching, state-of-the-art facilities, an on-going desire to improve, and most importantly amazing students, The Deepings School offers a first class education.

The Deepings school is an exciting place to be. Fantastic teaching and an adventurous approach leads to high academic standards during the seven years that the majority of students are part of the school family. There is an outstanding culture of care and a positive relationship-based ethos, which provides students with the confidence and independence they need to succeed.

The Iron Horse Ranch House: Delivering Exceptional and Fresh Food From Field to Fork In the last 6 months, the Iron Horse Ranch House has been working hard to locally source the ingredients used in their dishes, so their food has 100% traceability. Since the Market Deeping based Ranch House is a family business, they have chosen to use as many local family businesses to help them deliver their mission. Over the next month, they will launch a new menu for their fully trained chefs to showcase these fantastic ingredients.

Their famous Ranch House burgers now feature bread from Hambleton Bakery, who are the winners of ITV’s ‘Britain’s Best Bakery: Baker

of the Year’. As a (slightly fussy) food fanatic, you can trust me when I say that the burgers taste absolutely fantastic, due to the fresh ingredients that are sourced from the finest local suppliers. The 8oz beef burgers and hand cut steaks are sourced from best of beef farmer Mick Robinson’s cattle at Toft Farm, Bourne. The meat is handmade into tasty burgers by his daughter Rachel and son-in-law Duncan at Groovy Foods, Bourne. The Robinson family share the same passion about animal welfare as The Iron Horse; therefore the beef is free range, grass fed and well looked after. None of the meat is wasted; for

example the brisket is used for their homemade pulled brisket, which is tender and tasty.

Other local suppliers include: award-winning free-range chicken supplier Sutton Hoo, based in Suffolk; chef’s choice winners M&J Fish from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire (who have a completely traceable supply chain, including when the fish was caught, and on which boat); Saltby Pig Farm, Saltby; Pearce Brothers Potatoes at Stowgate Farm; and Rowbottom Eggs, Spalding. The combination of the fresh produce from these local suppliers has created a spectacular menu and the choice of foods has left me experiencing cravings every time I pass the Iron Horse! The friendly service, fantastic food, and finest ingredients used make this a high standard venue, and a great choice that is loved by many in the Deepings!

The Iron Horse Crew and their suppliers celebrating and sharing their new ‘field to fork’ delicious dishes!

| A little bit of history

Lockups were small houses of correction for occasional inmates that began to appear throughout the country in the late 18th century, near to the church, on the village green or close to ale houses.

They were purpose built single-cell prisons where drunks, vagrants and other petty offenders were locked up overnight before appearing before the magistrates to be dealt with next morning, sometimes known as guard houses or round houses. But whatever their shape, they were all “blind” houses because they had no windows, only grilles high in the walls or set in the doors for ventilation such as here at Deeping St James, hence the term blind drunk for anyone confined through over indulgence in alcohol.

This one is situated at the corner of Eastgate and Church Street and was

originally the market cross, built of a local limestone in the 15th century when the village held regular markets, but in 1819, it was converted for use as the village lockup because there was sufficient space within the base for its new use.

The work was carried out by a local craftsman, Tailby Johnson, at a cost of nine shillings (£40 in today’s value), the interior being five feet square and containing three stone alcoves for seats that were fitted with manacles and chains to secure felons who were ordered to be incarcerated for wrongdoing.

The responsibility for these tiny, temporary prisons was that of the parish constable whose duty it was to hold offenders overnight and until they were built, he was often obliged to take them into his own home for safe keeping, which often created a most awkward domestic situation.

The Deeping lockup has become a major tourist attraction and is now Grade I listed as being of historic and architectural importance. It was refurbished in 1999 at a cost of almost £20,000 which came from South Kesteven District Council, local charities and various grants.

The work was badly needed and included the removal of an unsightly electric lamp that defaced the top of the monument for many years but the stonework was also cleaned and re-pointed, cobbled setts laid around it and floodlighting installed to provide illumination at night, a seat installed and a line of black metal bollards to protect the structure from passing vehicles.

The money was therefore well spent to ensure the survival of this historic curiosity and also to attract more visitors to the village that already has a goodly share of heritage sites.

Welland River Raft Race Ready to Rock!

The 2015 Deepings Raft Race on August 2nd promises to be the highlight of the summer, if the last few years are anything to go by. The fact that this fantastic challenge is still in existence is largely down to the generosity of the town’s Boundary and River Restaurant. Three years ago, funds for the annual Raft Race were in serious jeopardy and the threat of extinction was very real.

HoweveR, ReAlising How Any THRiving communiTy neeDs evenTs like THe RAfT RAce:

a) to attract people and business into the town,b) to enable fun-seeking locals to take on

a challenge, cheered on by hundreds of supporters, and

c) to showcase how a successful community-driven event could and should be run, the Boundary became the Raft Race’s main sponsor and remains so to this day.

The Boundary’s pretty riverside location is something the public can take full advantage of, as pre-booked tables, either in the spacious restaurant or in the Restaurant Garden, will provide you with the “best seats in the house”, as the rafts pass (or sink!) before your very eyes! Alternatively, why not just relax on the green next to the Boundary and enjoy the award-winning fish and chips as well as flame grilled burgers, chicken and other mouth-watering choices.

The Boundary and River Restaurant will be open all day, and live music in the restaurant garden will add to the carnival atmosphere on this most fabulous day of the summer.

Linfords: The Plaice to Go in Market Deeping for Delicious Fish and Chips

Market Deeping is well known for providing high quality fish and chips in the area. Pat and Paul Linford, owners of ‘Linfords Traditional Fish and Chips’, believe that the success of their take away and joined restaurant is due to their family’s secret batter recipe, which has been served and loved by customers for over two generations.

Linfords has been awarded the regional title of ‘The Fish and Chip Shop of the Year’ five times. The winner of the award is judged on the excellent environment that the food is served in, and the high quality of the fish and chips. The owners believe that consistency is one of their key elements of success.

The Linford family have been frying their truly irresistible fish and chips since 1989. The current menu includes a variety of succulent fish including: cod, haddock, plaice, and huss. The fish is cooked in three different ways: floured, steamed, or fried in a light and golden batter. However, each week the take away and restaurant specials board features a variety of exciting choices from Pollock, to more exotic choices including:

halibut, red snapper, lemon sole and hake.

The owners care about the preparation of the fish on their menu throughout every stage of the cooking process, including where the fish is sourced. The freshest fish is selected from the sustainable waters of the Barents Sea, north of Norway, The North Atlantic, off the coast of the Faroe Islands and Iceland. This is why Linfords can serve the freshest, tastiest fish to those of Market Deeping (and beyond).

Other popular choices on the menu, that undoubtedly contributes to Linfords multi-award winning success, is their: southern fried chicken, a selection of burgers (including veggie burgers) with a choice of fillings, battered and plain sausages, fish cakes, pies, and added irresistible extras such as: soft bread rolls, crunchy coleslaw, beans, peas and onion rings.

Page 15: Discovering Deeping issue 001, July 2015

July 2015 | d I S C O V e r I n g Deeping 15

Special menus are available for children, which includes: tasty cod fish fillets, sausages and chicken nuggets. Each dish is served with a portion of chips that are golden and crisp on the outside, with a light and fluffy centre – it is no wonder that we are a nation of fish and chip eaters.

Linfords cater for everyone: they now feature in the National Federation of Fish Friers (also known as NFFF). This is a directory of fish and chip shops and restaurants, which are based in the UK, that provide coeliac friendly meals for those with a gluten intolerance. The gluten free fish and chips are available on Mondays from 4pm – 8:30pm.

Their comfortable and clean restaurant is the perfect location to sit back, relax and enjoy a delicious meal with a table service. Linfords restaurant is also fully licensed, so why not book a taxi, and enjoy your meal with your favourite tipple of choice from red wine, white wine, and a selection of beers? On warm summer evenings, their modern and idyllic outside patio area is perfect for enjoying the very best of what the British summer, and Market Deeping, can offer.

PenSIonS An update on changes and how we can help... The biggest changes to pensions in nearly 100 years has been given the go-ahead by the Government, and it means you will have far greater flexibility over what you can do with your pension pot. The new rules came into force on 6 April 2015 and the changes to how you can use your pension – whether it is in a SIPP, individual or group personal pension or stakeholder pension - are far reaching….

Once you reach age 55, from 6 April, you will be able to take the whole of your fund as a lump sum, but whether you should is another matter. Until this date, you can only take a maximum of up to 25% of the fund out as a lump sum, and the remainder has to be used to generate a pension income for you.

The new option in place of capped and flexible drawdown will be called “flexi-access drawdown”. This will allow you to take your pension without any maximum limit.

You’ll also have a new option of taking lump sum payments, 25% of which will be tax-free, with the remainder subject to income tax. These have been christened “uncrystallised funds pension lump sums” or UFPLS for short.

When working out what is best for you, it will be important to bear in mind that part of the funds

you take will be taxed at your marginal rate of income tax so you could find yourself paying a higher rate of tax than you might expect.

For example, if you are normally a 20% taxpayer, then taking a big amount from your SIPP could push you into the 40% or 45% bracket for that particular year, which would mean losing more of your pension than you might expect. So it is definitely worth doing your sums before taking too much out of your pension in one go if this could affect you.

We believe that it is essential that you take professional advice to achieve a clear understanding of all options and strategies that are available to you.

From the vibrant culture of Cape Town, the scenic splendour of the Garden Route and the incredible wildlife, South Africa has something to offer everyone. This June saw me jetting off to explore South Africa, starting from Cape Town, making my way over to finish at Shamwari, Eastern Cape.

After a very comfortable flight with South Africa Airlines and a fast and efficient transfer via Johannesburg airport, I landed in a very wet, windy but beautiful Cape Town.

I took a lovely journey via the Atlantic Coast road passing by the stunning Camps Bay before arriving at the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, where I enjoyed wonderful delights for lunch at the Market Place. The is an undercover gathering of various local vendors selling the most delicious savouries and desserts.

Unfortunately, the weather was not in my favour whilst in Cape Town and my trip up Table Mountain was cancelled, but then again it’s winter in June there so, whilst it was very disappointing, it was not surprising. My top tip for Cape Town, if you’re only staying a short while, is ‘Try and visit Table Mountain as soon as possible, as the weather is so changeable it may not be possible to go to the top everyday.’

After a walk around the Waterfront, I headed to the Five Star Vineyard Hotel. A stunning property on the outskirts of Cape Town, The Vineyard is situated on beautiful landscaped parkland with Table Mountain as back drop, an idyllic setting and an oasis only twenty minutes from the city centre.

Next morning, I woke to glorious sunshine and headed off on a full day Cape Point Tour. Driving along a very beautiful coastal route, my first port of call was Houts Bay, where I boarded a forty minute Seal Island Cruise enabling me to get a real close up view of hundreds of Cape Fur Seals in their natural habitat.

I then proceeded along the coast to Boulders Beach, home to the Jackass penguin colony. South Africa has lost 90% of their penguin population since the 1930s so they are very much an endangered species. I really enjoyed seeing the penguins.

Just beyond Boulders Beach, I had lunch at the Black Merlin Seafood Restaurant, without doubt the best seafood I have ever tasted. Hake, prawns and lobster, yum, I would highly recommend !

Onwards to Cape Point, driving over the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive with a two hundred metre drop on one side of the coach and a two hundred metre rise on the other. It was the most dramatic drive I have ever experienced, a bit hairy at times, not for the faint hearted!!!!

At Cape Point, I drove through the nature reserve and took the funicular to the lighthouse where I experienced the most panoramic views of the meeting place of the icy Atlantic and warm Indian Oceans, WOW.....

After a hearty breakfast, I left the Vineyard Hotel and Cape Town behind us and drove to the Winelands. I was very lucky to visit Babylonstoren, a Cape Dutch farm with vineyards and orchards surrounded by the dramatic mountains of the Drakenstein Valley.

Guests staying at the farm have full access to the entire farm so they can choose ingredients and pick from the fruit, vegetable and herb garden. A wide range of activities including spa, yoga, cycling, canoeing,

swimming, guided walks and hiking and most important....wine tasting!!!

Arriving early afternoon at the quaint and picturesque university town of Stellenbosch. What a wonderful town, amidst the many wine farms and vineyards! A very historic, leafy town centre with some fabulous restaurants, outdoor cafes, art galleries and boutiques. I took a “Foodies and wine tasting walking tour” and what a fantastic way to find one’s way around this beautiful location and to sample the local produce.

My home for this night was Oude Werf Hotel, which is ideally set amidst the town’s many heritage sites, museums, galleries

and vibrant cafe and boutique culture. I would highly recommend Stellenbosch, a very special town.

The next day took me along the Garden Route. This drive was so enjoyable with spectacular sea and mountain views, after around five hours, I arrived at Knysna. This town is famous for its oyster festival, warm people and the most magnificent views from Leisure Isle to Knysna Heads. The Knysna Heads is the most famed attraction; its treacherous entry into the Knysna Lagoon is where many an ancient vessel met its doom. I set sail on the ‘John Benn’ for a sunset cruise, where some lovely food and refreshments were served. I really enjoyed this little town and would highly recommend a night or two here whilst travelling along the Garden Route.

The following morning, I set off to one of the most famous private game reserves in the world - Shamwari Game Reserve. This was my home for two nights, two days and three game drives, staying at one of the six safari lodges on Shamwari, Riverdene.

I was very impressed with the welcome, friendliness and enthusiasm of all of the staff. My game driver managed to find all of the ‘Big Five’ as well as giraffe, zebras, hippos, monkeys and many more species of wildlife and bird life. Shamwari is home to the Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre. The goal of this foundation is to create an awareness of the horrific way in which wildlife is exploited in captivity around the world. We were very lucky to meet some of the rescued big cats. All Shamwari guests have a complimentary guided tour; believe me, it’s very much worth a visit.

There is also a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Shamwari. The aim of this centre is to rehabilitate and return all animals back into the wild. It was a very moving experience.

If you have the time, I would highly recommend combining Cape Town, the Winelands, the ‘Garden Route’ and a Safari experience. This is definitely a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip which is great value and will give you precious memories to last a lifetime!

I hope you enjoyed my travel diary on South Africa. I would love to hear from you, if you are considering an “adventure of a lifetime”.

deeping osteopaths for Back PainTrouble with your back does not simply produce pain in the back. Often it may cause symptoms in more remote areas such as: the buttocks, groin, hips, and legs (commonly called sciatica).

Problems in the spine and neck can also cause symptoms such as: dizziness, headaches, clicking jaw, pins and needles and many more. Research has shown that problems related to the back may affect over 60% of the UK’s population at some stage in their lives.

Osteopaths are trained professionals, who are skilled in diagnosing problems including those that may require further investigation if necessary. Around 30,000 people currently consult osteopaths every working day, with more than seven million consultations carried out every year (General Osteopathic Council).

NICE (the National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines recommend manipulative therapies, including osteopathy for the treatment of low back pain.

Your treatmentOsteopaths use a wide range of gentle manipulations, depending on your age, fitness and diagnosis. Treatment is different for every patient, but it may include techniques such as: different types of soft tissue massages and joint articulation to release tension, stretching muscles, and receiving help to relieve pain and mobilise your joints. Sometimes, when we move joints you may hear a ‘click’. This is just like the ‘click’ people get when they crack their knuckles.

Keeping a healthy spine and jointsWhen you’re young, the body can adapt easily to the stress and strain it is put under. As the body grows older (over 25 years!) it begins to lose some of the elasticity, which gives the body the flexibility to cope and adapt. In particular, this applies to the discs between the vertebrae and the joint cartilage. These require regular movement to ensure their maximum range, which thereby increases local circulation and nutrition to the surrounding fluids and tissues.

10 toP tIPS foR BAcK cARe:1. Keep moving and stretching

2. Take regular exercise

3. Take frequent breaks between repetitive tasks and vary the rhythm

4. Change position – avoid ‘computer hump’

5. Pace yourself when the work is heavy e.g. gardening

6. Adjust car seats, and have breaks and stretch on long journeys

7. Watch children’s posture – don’t let them carry bags on one shoulder

8. Avoid strain when lifting, especially when shopping and with small children

Dotty Hen Vintage “Shabby Chic” hits Bourne!

A new little gem is yours to seek out and then spend some browsing time, with a smile on your face. Any door-mat, for instance, combining “Hentrance” and “Eggsit” ought to do the trick! Located behind The Corn Exchange and a long-jump off Abbey Road in Bourne, Dotty Hen Vintage offers “shabby chic” merchandise which Jason Skinner has recently collected and displayed. Old pieces of furniture, including small tables, chairs, cabinets and stools, alongside candle stands, picture frames and boxes all scream out to be taken home with you. Being a Francophile helps, as Jason enthuses about having picked up much of his stock at brocantes, (second-hand markets) whilst visiting The Loire Valley region in France. In his workshop, the pieces become transformed by a mixture of rubbing down, stressing and re-painting in a particular way – the final product …magnifique! He is very happy to

take your own pieces and “shabby-chic” them for you, (if only that verb actually existed!) A word of warning – get there quickly because there’s an old saying about hot cakes and the fact that they don’t last long on the shelf! Welcome to the town Jason – Bourne needs you and your stylish hentertaining products!

introducing Market Deeping’s newest business: The vape project. The owners have one and a half years experience selling e-cigarettes and the flavoured liquid refills at their second shop in bourne. e-cigarettes are a healthier and far more cost effective alternative to smoking tobacco, costing people usually 10%-20% of their monthly spend of cigarettes. e-cigarettes come in various shapes and sizes, offering a nicotine replacement without the harmful chemicals and carcinogens that are found in traditional cigarettes. At The Vape Project, customers receive personalised advice based on how often they smoke, and their requirements. Customers generally begin with a starter kit, with more advanced options available. Their range of liquid flavours is endless; the most popular include: tobacco, menthol, strawberry, and blueberry with everything available to try before you buy on the tester bar. Another benefits of e-cigarettes is that the vapours disperse. This means that the vapours do not cling onto surfaces or clothing. Liquids start at £3.99, or you can buy 3 for £10. There is also a loyalty swipe card, so when customers purchase an item a percentage goes onto the card. discover why e-cigarettes have become popular by visiting the friendly staff at The Vape Project, 5a Market Gate Precinct, Market Deeping. “If Music be the Food of Love!”

d I S C O V e r I n g Deeping | July 201528

July sees the second anniversary of the arrival in Bourne of what has since become a much-loved and very popular café. It has been within Trip Advisor’s top three eating establishments in Bourne and district throughout much of this period, a fact of which owners, Sally and Simon Burn, are deservedly proud. They had already introduced a much-needed music shop to the townsfolk of Bourne (part of the same premises in the Angel Precinct, just off North Street), in March 2013.

The music side of the business is developing well and Simon is happy that that the music shop has proven popular with musicians of all ages and abilities. Wild Heart Music sells a good range of instruments but has tailored its offer more towards acoustic/electric guitars, amplification, drums, electric pianos, and folk instruments, alongside a very recently

added range of music books, totalling about 800 titles. Wild Heart Music offers many great brands, but Simon has access to virtually anything musical which the customer is seeking. When asked about best-sellers, Simon mentions Blackstar, Vox, Fender, Seagull, Mapex, Sigma and Tanglewood. He strives to make music affordable, by keeping his prices very competitive. There are accessories and consumables for all instruments, be it guitar strings,

reeds for woodwind instruments, oils for brass, replacement drumsticks … the list goes on!

Simon is well aware of the burgeoning music scene in this area of South Lincolnshire, including The Deepings, and Wild Heart has a thriving client-base, both in Bourne and in the surrounding area. Social media is important to both the café and music shop with events, new products and menu items regularly blogged and “Facebooked”. The café holds a very popular, monthly music evening, offering a three-course dinner and guest bands or soloists. These events are intimate and always well-attended.

In conjunction with Cutting Hedge Promotions, they have also hosted several open-mic nights for young performers and their fans. Whilst there, of course, how could they then resist

the fabulous array of food which Wild Heart are adept at providing? - “If music be the food of love, play on” – Yes indeed!

Both Sally and Simon have wide and varied experience in the service industry, front-of-house as well as in the kitchen. Their affable nature and charming personalities are evident, as they describe their menu. The home-made element is strong, with quiches, sponge cake, soups and scones proving very popular. Where they excel, though, is with a fascinating “Lunchtime Specials” board, variously offering polenta with roasted vegetables and mouth-watering crepes, for example – always looking for something new and exciting. Coffees are all made using two shots of quality, freshly ground beans from the “Monmouth” roaster (who started roasting coffee in 1978). This, along with the delicious Turkish flatbread, upon which paninis and sandwiches are served, just adds to Wild Heart’s “irresistibility-index!” It is little wonder then that the Burns proudly, (yet

with modesty) display their recent accolade of “Best Tea Room/Coffee Shop Finalist 2014-15”, (Sponsored by “Lincolnshire Life”.)

| Legal Corner advice from Buckles Solicitors

Make buying property in France a reality

Pension investors (aged 55+) now have greater flexibility as to how they take income from their pension, over and above any tax-free cash, allowing your dreams of buying property abroad to become a reality.

You can choose to take a lump sum, take smaller lump sums as and when you like or take a regular income. Any withdrawals above the tax-free amount will be taxed as income.

If you choose to buy property in France you need to be aware of the associated costs. The following relate to buying an existing property, rather than off-plan:

• In France, properties advertised as “FAI” (or Frais d’Agence Inclus) include the estate agent’s commission. This is generally in the region of 5-10% of the price but can vary as it is not regulated.

• On signing the contract you can expect to pay a deposit of between 5-10% of the price, plus sometimes a small amount on account

of the Notaire’s fees, with the balance being payable shortly before completion.

• Notaires’ fees amount to around 8% of the net price and include a land registry transfer tax (currently set at 5.8% in most Departments of France).

• If you require a French mortgage, in addition to the Lender’s mortgage arrangement fee and any mortgage broker’s fee, be prepared to pay additional Notaire’s fees of approximately 1% of the amount of the loan

– to cover the cost of registering a charge against the property.

• Once you become the owner you will have to meet the running costs of the property, including the utility bills and the local property taxes, as well as any mortgage repayments and tax on any rental income you may receive. Income tax for individuals not tax resident in France is currently charged at a minimum rate of 20%.

• If you are a UK resident owning property in France and have a net taxable French estate

worth over 1.3 million Euros (as at 1 January 2015), you will have to pay an annual Wealth Tax (ISF or Impôt de Solidarité sur la Fortune), calculated on a progressive scale between 0.5 and 1.5%. If you retire to France however, any assets situated outside France will only become subject to wealth tax following the end of the fifth year after you became tax resident.

When buying a property in any country it is strongly recommended you make a will that is valid in the country concerned to maximise the likelihood of your beneficiaries inheriting the property from you. Careful planning can help prevent unintended and unwanted consequences.

Your exciting new purchase will require careful financial, tax and inheritance law planning. We recommend you take advice from specialist financial and tax advisers as well as a solicitor specialising in French law. At Buckles Solicitors our multi-lingual team advises on all aspects of buying and selling property in France (and Spain) as well as related inheritance law and tax planning.

Crowland Carpets are a highly praised carpet and flooring retailer, and it’s no wonder why. The Market Deeping based retailer offers customers a full fitting service. They will uplift and dispose of the old flooring, remove furniture and place it back in its original place after the fitting. They offer exceptional customer service, professional procedures and wide range of stock. They will even hoover up when they are finished! That’s certainly what I would call a ‘good honest service’.

Despite only opening their store in Market Deeping in November, the staff have over 40 years of experience, and offer professional advice to help customers find their perfect flooring solution. The stock is competitively priced for all budgets, and offers a virtually unlimited choice of flooring options to suit every room – even your garden. Prices start at £8 per square metre, ranging to £120 per square metre.

Crowland Carpets offer niche market flooring, as well as popular choices for domestic and commercial

settings. Safety flooring is available for commercial use; however, for the fashion conscious, Crowland Carpets stock the latest London flooring trends. The current trend is bold bright colours, polka dots, and

contemporary stripes (toffee and lavender were my personal favourite). They also stock a selection

of tailor made rugs in various different styles and textures.

Crowland Carpets have an exclusive range of thick and hardwearing ‘Coralie’ branded rugs, which are hand-woven and hand delivered from India. Since

these rugs are handmade, they are tailor made to any

desired size.

Crowland Carpets stock a traditional range of carpets in relaxing, durable

and hardwearing neutral tones. They also provide and fit a custom dye service. This

means the palette of colours is virtually limitless, and can be matched to the same colour as anything, ranging from your skirting to your favourite piece of furniture!

To find out more information about your local carpet and flooring specialists and the great all-round service that they provide, visit their website, Facebook page, or visit them in-store.

Thank you.

this monthly feature provides a local resident with the opportunity to introduce themselves and offer their opinions to you, the readers. It is intended to be light-hearted and informative, and at times might even yield a bit of gossip!

Our first incumbent is the Headteacher of The Deepings School, Mr Richard Trow, who is nearing the end of his first year at the helm, having succeeded Chris Beckett, last summer. The forty-four year old, father of two sons and a daughter, leads a very busy social life, listing skiing, golf, cooking and travelling among his interests.

First on his list though is “education”, which has seen him progress rapidly, from a first degree in Geography and Economics, through a PGCE in Geography and P.E, then a Masters in Educational Leadership and Management, along with an Advanced Diploma in Inclusive Education and a National Professional Qualification in Headship.

It no doubt comes as a welcome break at times, therefore, for Richard to become “taxi-dad” when his active teenage sons and five-year old daughter require his services! Furthermore, the family’s renovation of a house on a mountainside in Slovenia also highlights the fact that his time spent within school is but part of a much wider-ranging and very full life.

I was born in a village called Glenfield to the north-west of Leicester. Our school’s values are based around the word IMPROVE – independence, motivation, perseverance, respect, order, veracity and excellence. We expect all of our school community to aspire towards these values and I am no exception. I do realise that this breaks the first rule of exams in that I have not answered the question correctly and have used 62 words instead of 5!

5) if There WAs oNe ThiNg WhiCh you Could ChANge AbouT The deepiNgs, WhAT Would iT be ANd Why?

There are a lot of committed community groups that do amazing work around the Deepings. Many are facing extreme financial pressure and I would like to see them on a more secure footing so they have the opportunity to focus on improving life for Deepings people.

| Police patrol

You can follow the Market deeping and deeping St James nPt on Facebook or follow me at @Rick_Mosley on Twitter.

Police Sergeant 503: Rick Mosley Rick Mosley is a Police Sergeant based in Bourne. He has served as a police officer for 15 years, having spent the first 11 years in Lincoln in a variety of roles from: Response Officer, a Community Beat Manager, a Crime Investigator within CID, to Acting Sergeant, before moving down to this area where he now lives with his family.

Q. WhY dId You WAnt to BecoMe A PoLIce offIceR?I can remember being a small boy sitting in a police car, and like most kids, I loved the idea of being a police officer. Having been in the Royal Air Force, it was a natural transition to move to Lincolnshire Police. I like the fact that I really can make a difference to people’s lives by dealing with any incident that I am confronted with: from anti-social behaviour to serious crime investigations.

Q. cAn You outLIne the ScoPe of YouR RoLe?My role is incredibly varied. I deal with a whole manner of situations and incidents ranging from the very exciting, almost frightening, and to the necessary paperwork that goes with each incident we deal with. As a sergeant on community patrol, I lead a team of police officers and special constables working a variety of shifts from days to full nights. In nearly all cases, we are the first to attend when a call comes in for a police response. We deal with the initial response before handing over to any specialist unit, depending on the nature of the incident. Quite simply, no two days are the same, which is what I love about the role.

Q. WhAt InItIAtIveS hAve You BRought to LIncoLnShIRe PoLIce?I do consider myself to be very innovative, and I constantly look for new ways of dealing with problems. I was the first officer in the Lincolnshire Police to use Facebook. Now it is common to see social media being used as a policing tool.

I also introduced the use of Immobilise in Lincolnshire. Immobilise is a free property database for members of the public to sign up to. Once you have set up your profile, you can register all your valuable property on the database. Any item that police come across on their duty can be searched for on the NMPR, which is a search engine linked to Immobilise, and if listed as lost or stolen the item can be reunited with their rightful owner. I would urge everyone to register with Immobilise, which can be found at www.immobilise.com

Q. WhAt dId You hAve to do to Be PRoMoted to SeRgeAnt?Promotion in the police is a lengthy process. It has now changed, but for me the first step was a three-hour multi-choice exam on law. Following that, there was a second exam that was set around role-play. After the application, I was invited to give a presentation on a subject given to me on arrival. I only had 30 minutes to prepare for this presentation! I then went straight into an interview that tested knowledge and understanding, which lasted about an hour.

Q. hoW do You ReLAx AfteR A dAY At WoRK?I really enjoy spending quality time with my daughter, who seems to be growing up so quickly. I also love cooking, walking the dog, and running. I recently ran the Langtoft 10k and am looking forward to running in more 10k events, and I may even move up to half marathons.

It was my pleasure recently to meet the enthusiastic Mr. Smith and share anecdotes. (As the son of retired vet, Bob Schwarz, vetting seems to be part of my D.N.A.) Present incumbent, Roland Stevens, has now handed over the reins to Wayne, who brings a wealth of experience, (over thirty years, with the last seventeen of them in Spalding) and an enviable reputation in the profession, since having qualified from Liverpool University in 1982. Wayne is eager to commend the work of his good friend and erstwhile colleague, Roland, and, as the owner, he intends to maintain the present staffing and accommodation situation in Bourne. His emphasis on “the three C’s” sums up his approach to his work: the utmost CARE for the animal, clear COMMUNICATION with the owner and COMPASSION for both, all at an affordable price.

Bourne has a new Vet!A

Alder Creatures Great and Small

pologies if the oblique reference to James Heriot and his famous veterinary escapades in the Yorkshire Dales has made you wince, but we have a new

vet in town. Wayne Smith, currently running a thriving practice in Spalding, has converted the “Exeter Veterinary Centre” in Exeter Street, Bourne into “The Alder

Veterinary Practice, Bourne”.

Special servicesNot all veterinary practices are the same and Wayne can confidently offer the client a range of specific features, which goes a long way to explain why so many pet owners travel such distances to his practice in Spalding (and inundate his Facebook page with so many “likes”!)

His offers include:1) A guaranteed same day appointment for a sick pet if the owner

considers it necessary.2) The owner can remain with their pet pre- and post-operation,

alongside any period of convalescence (for which Wayne can provide scientific evidence for its benefit to the animal).

3) Open visiting during daytime hours if a pet is “hospitalised” at the surgery.

4) A deferred payment scheme, (with no fees nor interest charges), for unexpected procedures/ operations.

5) Permanently low vaccine, neutering and identichip prices.6) Monthly promotions. (Until the end of February, for example, he is

offering dog and cat identichips for £6).

Page 43: Discovering Deeping issue 001, July 2015

The rescuing and re-homing of abandoned and injured cats has proved to be a highly successful and rewarding feature of the Spalding practice. Wayne intends to continue this policy in Bourne, where Griselda Winn and the staff already have much success in this field. Wayne will be partnered by his highly valued colleague, Deirdre Wilson, who offers twenty-five years of experience to the good folk of Bourne. Away from the surgery, life sounds frantic with Wayne and wife Anne, sharing with their five young children, the upkeep of 7 horses, 8 dogs, 14 cats, 2 rabbits, 28 guinea pigs, 6 chickens, 2 tortoises and a hamster. This is indeed one very caring, knowledgeable and ambitious vet and we wish him and the practice every success in Bourne.

Wayne believes in the

importance of CARE, COMMUNICATION and COMPASSION

at an affordable price

The vast majority of us* use Google to search online but many do not realise there are ways to tailor your search expressions to improve the results that you need. Here are a few tips that may be of help when searching online. In the information that follows the actual search term typed into Google will be shown in red. (*Latest figures show 88% in the UK use Google to search)

Using the + and – symbols:

By using the + and – symbols in a search we can pin down a search to the content that we want far more accurately. Here’s an example:

A search for Bourne reveals over 42 million hits and a mix of all sorts of references to Bourne including the movies.

So let’s pin this down a bit. Let’s enter the search term using the – operator so enter Bourne –movie

We now get a result that focuses primarily around the town of Bourne and removes any references relating to the movies.

The opposite is true too. If we do the search using the following Bourne +movie, we now have the opposite effect with results focused around the word Bourne and the movie industry.

Using the Quotation “” marks to search

Another neat little feature is to use quotation marks around words. So for example if we type a search for walking football we get a return of 121 million results!

So let’s narrow that down a bit. We are only searching for items relating to the exact phrase “walking football” so let’s tell Google that. Enter “walking football” including the speech marks. Our results drop to 172,000.

We can even combine the two methods that we’ve looked at here to get even better results. Type in “walking football” +Stamford. Google now knows what we want even closer and returns just 28 hits.

These are some of the more generally useful options but you can see a list of others on the Google Support site at https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2466433?hl=en

GOOGLE SEARCH - Improve your results...

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Big Tom Promotes Safe driving in The deepings A “BIG TOM” welcome to my motoring section in The Deepings’ edition of Discovering Magazines. I am a local driving instructor, and I have been guest writing in ‘Discovering Bourne’ magazine for sev-eral months. I am pleased to say it has been positively received by the local residents. It was very kind to be asked to contribute here also, and I very much hope that we can replicate the 2-way-ex-change between my readers and myself.

What subjects do I typically cover? Anything and everything motoring. Previous subjects include:

• The challenges that new build developments create for safe driving

• Speeding and failing to give way at zebra crossings

• Inconsiderate parking and the effects that has on others

• Driving test changes and general changes to driving legislation

• The quality of the bus services

• How black box “telematics” assist newly qualified drivers

• Driverless car technology

…. to name but a few.

However, my over-riding point that I would like to say in this first article is how much I welcome your thoughts and opinions. I can honestly say that I personally read AND respond to each and every email that I receive from local residents. Whether you’re asking a question, venting an anger, or merely offering an opinion, your responses are all very much welcome. I was giving a driving lesson only this morning from the Deeping Community Centre, and I drive around the beautiful Deepings regularly; I know there will be so much for us to discuss. Enjoy, and engage with me via email on [email protected].

Romeo and JulietThe greatest love story the world has ever known, set amid the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. Taking place in Victorian England with the Capulets portrayed as a gypsy family and the Montagues as traditional landowners, the bitter conflict between the families forces Romeo and Juliet to conceal their passion. The forbidden nature of their love leads to the inevitable tragedy. This tale of “a pair of star-crossed lovers” includes wild gypsy dancing and fortune-telling, murderous rivalry and thrilling sword fights.

Henry V2015 is the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt and we will be commemorating this famous victory with this rousing and inspiring play. Prince Hal, the playboy of 15th Century England, turns military commander and statesman to defy the overwhelming odds of France on the bloody fields of Agincourt. Comedy, romance, treachery, triumph and disaster combine to paint a vivid picture of life and death in 15th century France and England.

Tom Jones(Based on the novel by Henry Fielding) Step back in time to the bawdy, fun-loving world of the 1700s with the hilarious romantic comedy of Henry Fielding’s masterpiece Tom Jones.Adapted for the stage by Joan McAlpine, we follow the life of Tom from his discovery as a babe in the bed of an honest, kind-hearted landowner, through his adolescent misdemeanours and on to the growing awareness of his attractiveness to the ladies of all ages. But Tom’s youthful recklessness brings him not only into the arms of a number of amorous women but also to the condemned cell. As he is led to the gallows there is a great commotion - will he hang, or will he escape the noose to marry his only true love Sophia?

Answer the following questions 1) Who are the star-crossed lovers ?

2) In Henry V where in France did the battle take place ?3) In Tom Jones who is Tom’s true love ?

Please send your answers (along with your contact details) on a postcard to Stamford Shakespeare Competition. Crown Jewellers , 15c North Street , Bourne Lincs PE10 9AE
