Deeping Shopping Centre Charity Car Boot Local bargain hunters are encouraged to attend the Deeping Shopping Centre’s first ever charity car boot sale on Sunday 16th August, with all pitch fees donated to the Rotary Club of The Deepings.

The shopping centre is calling on the people of The Deepings and surrounding areas to look through their cupboards and give those wardrobes a sort out, in order to find any unwanted items to sell.

The event will run from 8am until 1pm within the long stay area of the centre’s car park. Pitch holders are able to set up from 7am.

Deeping Shopping Centre manager, Kevin Smith, commented that: “car boot sales are a great place for the local community to gather, and we are all excited for our first car boot sale at the centre. We really want to encourage anyone thinking of booking a stall to give it a go!”.

A pitch costs £5 per car, and £10 with a trailer. Pitch fees will be donated to the Rotary Club of The Deepings.

To reserve a pitch, please phone 01945 584109, or visit the front kiosk in the Co-op supermarket. The event is open to car-boot participants only: trade stalls and food vendors are not permitted.

Charity Event at The Deepings Dance and Fitness CentreOn July 4th The Deepings Dance and Fitness Centre were joined by eleven men for a Swiss Ball Pilates class, to raise money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund for type 1 diabetes). Tracey Macullum runs a class that is Pilates-based using a Swiss ball, which was originally designed to enhance the technical training of ballet dancers. Tracey has subsequently adapted it to create an adult fitness programme, and has become a UK trainer for other instructors and dance teachers.

Some of the husbands of ladies who attend Tracey’s classes thought it would be wise to comment that, “It couldn’t be that difficult laying on the floor with your feet on top of a Swiss ball”. So the class offered them the opportunity to participate, to put their

comments to the test, and raise money for charity in the process.

Tracey adds, “We were lucky enough to be joined by Gemma Robinson and her husband; their lovely daughter sadly battles with type 1 diabetes and does so with the most radiant smile. Our total funds so far sit at £900, and it’s still rising”.

Raspberry, White Chocolate and Waffle PuddingMethod1. Preheat oven to 200 ‘C (180’C if fan assisted). Dice

the waffles into 2cm pieces, roughly chop the white chocolate into small chunks.

2. Place half the waffle pieces into a deep ovenproof dish, scatter half of the white chocolate and raspberries on top, then repeat the layers with the remaining waffle, white chocolate and raspberries.

3. Mix the caster sugar and the flour together in a bowl, add the crème fraiche and the eggs. Whisk until well blended and spoon the mixture over the top of the raspberries, waffle and white chocolate mix.

4. Bake in the middle of the oven for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Langtoft Primary School is a thriving and popular school with a glowing reputation. Nestled in the village of Langtoft, near to Market Deeping on the A15, the school has seven classes, one for each year group. With a capacity of 210 children, the school enjoys a rural location and boasts an attractive site, complete with tyre park, trim trail, climbing wall, small woodland and a newly-installed gazebo. “There is always plenty to do at playtime,” says Headteacher, James McCullough.

James has been Headteacher at Langtoft since September 2007 and recently celebrated his twentieth year with Lincolnshire County Council, having previously taught at Bourne Westfield. When asked to consider what makes his school so successful, Mr McCullough simply states: “We always strive for the best: whether it’s on the sports field or in the classroom; we encourage our pupils to do the best that they can.”

It is that positive ‘can-do’ attitude that resulted in all 32 of its Year 6 pupils achieving the nationally expected Level 4 in Reading, Writing and Mathematics last year. “It wasn’t until a grandparent asked me if I’d seen the Daily Telegraph that day that I realised that we had been ranked as the ninth best primary school in Lincolnshire!” James added.

The children of Langtoft Primary School also enjoy success on the sports field. “We compete in as many competitions as possible to give the children every opportunity to enjoy sport and to experience winning and losing.” Indeed the school’s motto is Learning for Life. “The purpose of any primary school is to give children the best possible start in life so that they can go on to achieve their potential at secondary school. At Langtoft we value hard work, good manners and a caring and co-operative attitude – in all that you do!”

With a curriculum designed to bring learning alive, the children really do enjoy coming to school. (The school’s attendance figures place it in the top 20% in the country.) “We aim to make learning purposeful and interesting for our pupils. They deserve at least one magic moment a day!” concluded the magical Mr McCullough.

Inheritance tax… the rules are changing! The Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced that the rules regarding Inheritance Tax are changing, with effect from the 2017 – 18 tax year, which will see the introduction of an additional main residence nil-rate band. This will be available if the deceased’s interest in a residential property, which has been his or her residence, and is included in the estate, is left to one or more direct descendants on death.

The value of the main residence nil-rate band for an estate will be the lower of the net value of the interest in the residential property (after deducting any liabilities such as a mortgage) or the maximum amount of the band.

The maximum amount will be phased in as follows;

2020-21 £175,000

This change will impact on the individual’s main residence, whilst properties such as buy-to-let will not qualify under the new rules.

It is proposed that, where part of the main residence nil rate band might be lost because the deceased had “downsized” or had ceased to own a residence on or after 8 July 2015, (perhaps because of issues such as care home funding), that part (of the main residence nil rate

band) will still be available provided that the deceased left a downsized residence or assets of equivalent value to direct descendants.

the remaining Basic nil Rate will be frozen at £325,000 until the end of 2020-21

The main residence nil rate band will enable the Chancellor to claim that a £1 million nil rate band has been achieved and will undoubtedly take some families out of the IHT net. However, house price inflation may mean that the benefits of this additional nil rate band will be gradually eroded.

In 2008 following a safari holiday in Kenya, Rita and Geoff Fowler visited an informal school in a Mombasa slum. They couldn’t believe what they saw: two young men trying to teach with no resources in an appalling building. They couldn’t walk away when they had skills to offer; thus Mustard Seed Project was born.

Primary education has been free in Kenya since 2003, but there has been no new money from the government, which means that children are in classes of 80–100. However, education can only be accessed if you can afford uniform, books, exams and have paid for pre-primary education, the equivalent of Key Stage 1.

In February 2009 conversations with the local people revealed their most pressing needs –education, water, work and healthcare, and that is what Rita and Geoff aimed to improve. In September 2009, they started Miche Bora Primary School with 17 children and two teachers. The school has grown to 200 children in eight classes of 25, with a feeding programme. The rented building has become too small, so they have began building a new school. So far, the foundations

and a four-classroom block with three toilets have been built, but it will eventually house 300 children from 3–14 years. It will include: a library, school

hall and I.T. suite, which will be available to the community in the evenings. The aim of the school is to provide quality education for poor children, including those with special needs like three profoundly deaf children.

Rita and Geoff realised that just helping the children wouldn’t be enough; therefore, they’re providing adult education in literacy skills and I.T. skills. They have trained women in business skills, and given them loans to start their own businesses. They are supporting the youth through sport. A well now provides water, and mosquito nets are protecting the whole community. From October 2015, there will be a clinic for children, their siblings, and parents. The challenge now is to raise £88,500 to complete the building.

Hello and I hope you’ve been enjoying my travel articles. Can I Leave My house to My Cat? The other morning I was gently berating one of my suppliers, as he still hasn’t made his will yet. It turned out to be a timely conversation, as he had been arguing with his girlfriend and he asked me the killer question, ‘Can I leave my house to my cat?’

Setting aside the fact that his girlfriend won’t inherit anything if he dies because they are unmarried, the scale of the argument had been enough to make giving his house to his cat a serious consideration.

The short answer is no, a cat is a possession and so is a house, so you can’t give them to each other. But like most things in life, if you are prepared to go the extra mile, then it can be done. The trick is to set up a trust for the maintenance of the cat during her lifetime, with additional instructions that detail what should happen to any money that is left over when your cat joins you in the great cat basket in the sky. Maybe you could leave the remainder to Cats Protection, or perhaps you should remember your partner and let them have what’s left.

Many of us refuse to accept that we might lose our mental capacity, and don’t think about how we would manage our financial affairs if we did become mentally incapable. However, statistics show that there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, of whom 40,000 are under 65. According to the Alzheimer’s Society this situation is getting worse. It is therefore important to plan ahead, and ease the potential burden on your relatives.

One answer is to create a ‘lasting power of attorney’ (LPA), which gives someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf about your financial affairs, if you become mentally incapable of making your own decisions.

It is very important that you set up an LPA while you are still mentally capable, well before you need it. If you become mentally incapacitated later in life and don’t have an LPA in place, your relatives can face long, distressing delays, and expense in applying to the court to take control. Don’t assume that because you have set up an LPA, you have lost control. Your LPA would only be activated if and when it is needed.

There are two types of LPA. A property and financial affairs LPA is used to appoint someone you trust as your attorney to take decisions on your behalf about money matters. They would be empowered, for example, to make decisions

on buying and selling your property, running your bank accounts, dealing with your bills and state benefits, and investing your money. This type of LPA can also be useful if you need your attorney to help you because of physical incapacity as well as mental incapacity.

A health and welfare LPA only applies if you become mentally incapacitated, and allows your chosen attorney to make decisions about your care including: where you live, what medical treatment you receive whether you should be resuscitated etc.

The LPA is a powerful legal document. You may wish to get a solicitor to help if you’re unsure about the process.

This month we look at dog and cat diets. Alongside the huge increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes in humans, we are seeing the same problem with our pets. In dogs, this has been typically blamed on owners giving too many titbits, especially those containing fat. This situation is less obvious for cats.

There is a line of thought that the types of diet we eat should be related to the food that we were evolved to eat. Humans, dogs and cats took millions of years to evolve, and all the species were finely tuned to the diet that they were able to eat. Animal domestication and farming only occurred about 10,000 years ago, a drop in the ocean in evolutionary terms. Dogs and cats today are still essentially evolved for the diets they were eating 10,000 years ago.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that none of us are supposed to be having such high levels of carbohydrate, sugars or refined polyunsaturated vegetable fat, and that deviations from the evolved diet have directly resulted in the problems of obesity, diabetes and heart conditions that we see today.

We are starting to see changes in some dog and cat diets, with the removal of wheat and other grains, and some reduction in the level of carbohydrates. This is especially important for cats who are obligate carnivores and should not consume much carbohydrate.

People have been feeding raw diets to their dogs for many years but it has only recently been taken up more widely. I have seen great benefits from raw feeding, but the diet must be balanced with meat, bone and offal, with low levels of non-grain carbohydrate for dogs.

Some cats with diabetes will reduce or even stop the need for insulin when fed a raw meat and bone diet. For those interested in feeding in this way, there is a company called Natures Menu that supplies conveniently packaged raw food, and provide good advice on how to feed this. Most good pet stores supply this diet (frozen). The next best diets are those that are grain-free and that have increased levels of protein and fat and reduced carbohydrate levels. There are many of these now on the market. The one that I have had experience of using is a diet called Canagan.

These types of diet will go some way to decreasing some of the health problems that we are seeing today.

Brian Barber has been part of the Parish Council for twelve years, plus at least another four more, after the latest May election. his main duties on the Parish include being Chairman of the Cemeteries. Brian explains, “I have taken a big interest in this area and, over the past nine years, we have transformed the cemeteries around the Priory into a well maintained site. hopefully, this will help those that visit their lost ones, by having a good environment to dwell in”.

Brian is also the Parish WEB Master: he keeps all the latest information about what the Parish do, what they are going to do, plus local news (which you can find at: www.dsjpc.co.uk/pc). He also looks after the office IT. For eighteen years, Brian was involved in the Deeping Carnival, and assisted to put on The Deeping’s largest free event. He tells us, “Thankfully we had help from the Scouts, Guides, Brownies and the Deeping Lions, plus many more. Thank you all”.

He enjoyed making a home in The Deepings, and bringing up two children with his wife, Val. His hobbies are mainly sport-related (assisting with The Deeping Swimming Club, Cubs Football Team, his Badminton Club, plus many pub quizzes). | In the Hot Seat 1) Where Were you born, and What is your fondest memory of your childhood?

I was born in Chatham, Kent. I moved out aged 18 as I went to university, never to return. My favourite memories are: living in a remote village in the Kent countryside. I had the freedom so many children lack today. With the Medway down one side of me and the Thames the other, we roamed all over the marshes, beaches and anywhere we liked, and it was safe. However, if we weren’t in before the streetlight went on we had trouble sitting down for a little while…

2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and Why?

Possibly my Dad, he was an excellent sportsman, and of course my aim was always to beat him – which wasn’t always easy. He was very good at gardening, and won many trophies. He was always trying to beat his Dad and Father-in-law – maybe that’s where my competitive nature came from.

3) Which tWo characters, (alive or not), Would you most enjoy sharing a meal With and Why?

My wife Val (as she is good company), and anybody else that wishes to join us. I just like meeting people and socializing.

4) hoW Would you describe yourself in just five Words?

Approachable, determined, sociable, sporty, funny.

5) if there Was one thing Which you could change about the deepings, What Would it be and Why?

This is the main reason that I joined the Parish Council. Some of my Bug Bears include: inappropriate planning – have you seen some of the houses built around the place? So I joined the planning group, and I hope we can alleviate this problem.

I would also change the village being unloved such as: grass verges left to weeds, playing grounds uncut, etc. So far we have got contractors to help keep the village tidy, and keep chasing the District/County Councils.

I would add more facilities for the young (supporting the library and youth clubs). However, we are up against a county that cuts everything, except the grass and their bonuses of course. But the Parish does step in and keep things running if they can.

6) What advice Would you give to a 16 year old you?

Enjoy life: your whole world is ahead of you, so enjoy it, work hard, and make yourself count in your environment.

sergeant Mosley’s Musings - “Canine Considerations”As I write this article, during the early hours on a night shift, it is still very warm, after daytime temperatures nudging thirty degrees. Only today, when I got into my car after parking in town, the wall of heat that hit me, as I opened the door, knocked me back.

With this thought in mind, why, why, why do people still think nothing of leaving a dog inside a car in such heat? Every year, dogs die in hot cars. I’m not going to hold back in my description, but it is an agonisingly painful and stressful death.

Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog. Dogs regulate their body temperatures by panting, and in a small enclosed space such as a car, a panting dog will simply not be able to get enough fresh air to keep their body temperature at a safe level. The dog will then begin to develop symptoms of heatstroke.

If you see a dog suffering in such conditions, and displaying signs of heatstroke, don’t be afraid to dial 999.

Police officers have a power of entry to prevent suffering to animals under Section 19 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and I make no apology when I say my colleagues and I will not hesitate to use that power. Not only will the owner face a repair bill for the damage to their vehicle, but may also face prosecution for causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. A “protected animal” is one that is commonly domesticated in the British Isles and, interestingly, includes stray dogs and feral cats! Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the maximum penalty for neglect or cruelty to animals is up to fifty-one weeks imprisonment, and/or a fine not exceeding £20,000.

Many people’s instinct, if the dog is in immediate need of care, will be to break into the car to free the dog. If you decide to do this, please be aware that, without proper justification, this could

be classed as criminal damage. Make sure you tell the police what you intend to do and take images/footage of the dog, and the names and numbers of witnesses to the incident. The law states that you have a lawful excuse to commit damage, if you believe that the owner of the property that you damage would consent to the damage if they knew the circumstances (section 5(2)(a) Criminal Damage Act 1971).

dId you knoW that Article 2 of the Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires every dog, unless expressly exempted, to wear a collar whilst on a highway or in a public place, with the name and address of the owner inscribed on it? Those exemptions basically refer to working dogs.

FInALLy, from 6th April 2016, all dogs in England will have to be microchipped and be registered on one of the commercial databases. Dog owners will also have to keep their details up to date on the databases, and need to register the details of new owners before handing them over.

Google have invested a great deal of time and effort in facial recognition, and the benefits are part of their photo editing application, Picasa. You can use this tool to automatically tag the name of family and friends and to create a ‘personal’ album for each.

To turn on the feature you need to have it ticked in Picasa – Options – name Tags.

Google will now start to scan all of your images to find human faces. It will then sort them into small groups of ‘like’ faces for you to start tagging.

Initially, all faces will be in the Unnamed Section but they will be moved to a named

folder as you start to tag each person. You are now ready to start tagging faces, ‘training’ Picasa to recognise features.

Click on Add a name and type in the name of the person being tagged.

Each time you tag a ‘new’ person a Picasa profile will be created for them. Just click on new Person to create that profile.

As more people are tagged, a list begins to build in the People section and Picasa ‘learns’ what that individual looks like at various stages of their life. From that point on, when it recognises a photograph of that individual, it will add a copy to that person’s image folder.

Obviously, Picasa will find many faces on your photographs that are of no interest. To remove these and ‘ignore’ them in future – click on the X symbol at the top right of the image and select ‘Ignore Person’.

To view all the tagged images of an individual, you simply click on their name in the People section of Picasa. You will now see all of the tagged images for that person. You may also see a message about ‘suggestions’. These are images that Picasa thinks is that person. You can view these and select them in one click using the ‘confirm all’ button.

motorists, Watch out for Cyclists!Welcome to this August edition! This lovely weather brings out the cyclists who like to take the opportunity for some exercise in the beautiful sunshine.

Riding around the Deepings does offer some lovely scenery to view, but we do have some rather hazardous situations that make it pretty dangerous for cyclists. As motorists, we have a duty to always be vigilant for vulnerable road users, and give them plenty of space. In my driving lessons round our area recently, I have noticed that the space between vehicle and cyclist can sometimes get quite tight. Potholes in the road, narrow roads, sharp bends, and parked vehicles can often cause hazards. But this time of year we also often see youngsters riding on the roads, and some are more able than others. It is always best to hold back, assess how steady they are with the position in the road, before attempting to overtake. The faster roads surrounding the Deepings can literally only be within a minute or two’s drive from some pretty congested areas that we have, and so being willing and able to identify and comply with the speed restrictions and take a more defensive approach can only be good news for cyclists.

Happy cycling in this sun, and motorists spare a thought for cycle safety.
