What better way to welcome you all, than with a smile? Mid-May to Mid-June happens to be National Smile Month, which is the U.K.’s largest and longest-running campaign, (forty years old this year), to promote good oral health. In a world which often seems to try its hardest at times to make us feel inadequate and sad, it’s worth remembering that it’s much easier to smile than it is

to frown. On page 22, you’ll find some interesting snippets about smiling. Remember … life is like a mirror- we get the best results when we smile at it.

May’s issue is hopefully going to fill you all with the joys of early summer. If you are getting ready for the holidays, our advice here on travelling to where delicious food is to be found may make you smile. I hope you enjoy the feature on Eating out in Deeping and how you don’t really have to travel far for that special meal. Finally, I was recently amused to hear that a local, well-known shoe shop owner was once able to supply a customer with a pair of Size 19 shoes – “That was no small feat”, he remarked.

This beautiful time of the year sees new life re-emerge from winter, and hedgerows and gardens become a kaleidoscope of colour - but a word of warning to all of you outdoor types, “with more head than hair”. Richard Clevedon-Smith, 49, an Exeter bus-driver, had what might, to most of us, have been a “hair-raising experience”, when he is convinced that he was targeted by a huge, Eurasian eagle owl recently … because it mistook his shiny

bald head for an egg! Scary stuff, indeed.

Let’s hope that this month’s collection of articles and wise words from our knowledgeable contributors will help you make the most of what Deeping and the surrounding villages and towns have to offer in the weeks ahead. In response to Claire, I’d add that, to me, a smile is like a tight pair of pants — it makes your cheeks go up.

Mustard Seed Project set to grow againyou may remember reading about the Mustard Seed Project in our august issue; a uK-based charity, founded by Market Deeping residents, geoff and Rita Fowler, to support people living in a slum district on the outskirts of Mombasa, Kenya.

When Rita and Geoff visited the project recently, they were able to share two pieces of good news… Deepings Rotary (who have previously funded sets of Swahili group-reading books and dictionaries for the pupils), plus a private donor, have given money to build a cess pit and soak-away. This may not sound very glamorous but, if you think of seventy-five children and three teachers, using one small pit latrine for two terms, you might

imagine just how great will be the need.

The charity has also received a large donation from a charitable trust to complete the second phase of the new school building, which opened earlier this year with four classrooms: this is a very exciting development and cause for celebration amongst all those involved with Miche Bora School as it will allow the school to expand. The current pupils have wasted no time in creating a lively learning environment.

The MSP clinic should be well-established in the next few months, serving pupils and their families. Two of the charity’s Kenyan trustees are retired nurses, and have organised the purchase and registration of the equipment, and a Kenyan clinic in the locality is offering access to

their facilities for blood and urine testing. A young nurse from the UK will be going out for a month in June to volunteer with the nurse in charge.

Volunteers are invaluable to the project, sharing their skills and expertise, and they have achieved a lot over the years. Several have been UK primary school teachers, using their experience to advise the teaching staff on methods of teaching, assessing reading ages and making resources; one young woman spent weeks setting up a school library that the wider community can access; other people helped to reinstall the computer suite and take photographs for the website – and one came to teach the pupils circus skills!

countdown is on for the nSPcc sponsored cycle ride organised by the Peterborough Business Support group to raise vital funds to support abused, neglected and vulnerable children locally, the family charity cycle ride at Rutland Water takes place, from 9.00am.on Sunday June 5th.Goodie bags and T-shirts will be handed out to all riders, and after pedaling around the seventeen mile circuit, cyclists can tuck into a tasty hog roast.

Support Group chairman Chris Collier said: “The bike ride is one of the most important and popular events in our fund-raising calendar and we hope as many people as possible will join us for a great family day out.”

Jubilee Park with Deeping St. James Parish Council on April 21st, in celebration of the Queen’s ninetieth birthday.

CounCil itemsWe held our election for Deputy Mayor, and congratulations to Councillor Pauline Redshaw who was re-elected. We continue to have issues with the corner of Blenheim Way on the Northfields Industrial Estate in Market Deeping, with a spate of accidents. We are working with the Police and Lincolnshire County Council, to understand the reasons and, hopefully, we can implement some safety features to avoid more incidents in the future, such as interactive signage and anti-skid surfacing. In the meantime, I would urge users to slow down when approaching this tight bend. I will keep you updated on the progress we make.

Please note that the Town Council AGM will take place on May 11th, at the Town Hall, starting at 7.30pm

Community itemsThe Library is going from strength to strength; please go along and find out what new facilities they have. We have heard that we may be getting funding to hold a literary festival in the Deepings - more information to follow, when available.

At the Annual Town Meeting, I was delighted to be able to present to my charities, the sums of £865 to Age Concern and £850 to the Scouts and Guides. This month, I have been very busy attending many thanksgiving services and civic dinners, (the most joyful of these being a Lancashire Evening at Bourne, hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bourne) and a boat ride in to the Wash with the Admiral of the Wash. Other events included opening the April fair in Deeping, attending the St.

George’s Day Parade, (held in Deeping this year and organised by the Stamford and Bourne District Scouts) and attending the lighting of the beacon at the

The village is dominated by the 750-year-old St Andrew’s Church and the best view of it is across the meadows from the one-arch stone bridge over the river while mellow stone houses line nearly half a mile of the old Roman causeway we now know as King Street which crosses the waterway here on its straight and narrow way northward to Bourne.

The Domesday Book, the great land survey ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086, records that there were four water mills grinding corn at West Deeping but this probably included those at nearby Lolham and Maxey.

Water mills could never have survived in the fens because of their slow moving rivers and absence of fall but there were many around the edge of this flat expanse of land, particularly adjacent to the great corn growing regions such as Lincolnshire.

The one that remains in the village is a picture postcard building, beautifully restored as a family home and a surprise around the bend as you approach the church.

St Andrew’s dates back to the 13th century, with further additions in 1676 and 1803 and a restoration in 1876-77,

and is Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular in style. Inside, we find an octagonal font, three-bay arcades on round piers, a mass of tiling in many colours and lots of stained glass, while the outstanding feature of the centre aisle is a large and magnificent two-tier brass chandelier of twenty-four lights dating from 1770.

The manor house is approached from the village through cast iron gates mounted on stone piers and dates from 1634, a small vernacular H-shaped residence set in formal gardens surrounded by a moat, with stone-coped gables, mullioned windows and leaded lights of pleasing proportions with a galleried reception hall inside, all reminiscent of the comfortable landed gentry of centuries past.

This is a Grade II listed building, like many other properties in the village, even the public house, the Red Lion Inn, which was built in 1795 but now attracting a far wider clientele than the farm workers of yesteryear and, like similar hostelries in surrounding villages, vies for the restaurant trade from those wishing to eat out.

Secure your garden against green-fingered thievesAs the fine weather settles in and the gardening bug bites, the temptation and opportunities for green-fingered thieves grow faster than weeds in the driveway.

It is important to realise that, if you do not have a legally-binding Will, your inheritance may be passed on in a way in which you don’t desire.

If you have not prepared a Will, Intestacy Rules will apply instead which, aside from being a more complex and expensive administration procedure, provide that:

• Your spouse or civil partner may only be entitled to part of your estate;

• Your children or grandchildren will inherit your assets at age 18, which you may feel is too young; and

• Only blood relatives and your spouse or civil partner can benefit. Your in-laws, friends and unmarried partner (whether having lived with you for many years or not) will NOT inherit your estate.

It is always a pleasure to meet people who clearly love their work, who show an abundance of passion and are convinced that they can provide an excellent result. To then consult a respected reviewing site on-line, and discover that six of the last seven customer reviews have been excellent, with maximum points awarded, makes it even more encouraging. The Nag’s Head in Bourne’s Market Place, is at present benefitting from these fabulous reviews. Yes, there have been some tweaks and changes recently, and they have bravely decided to change what they are about, around the same time as their new Head Chef, Leighton O’Callaghan, joined the team at The Nag’s Head.

The new strategy involves the provision of top quality, fresh food, locally-sourced wherever possible, expertly cooked and presented with great service. There will be new menus every six to eight weeks, and the emphasis is not so much on “going up-market”, with all the extra costs passed on to the diner, but instead, a reassuring “keep it all fresh, nothing out of a packet and all home-produced sauces, desserts, pickles and chutneys”.

Some of the new things they now offer are a “Pie and a Pint” night on a Tuesday, from 6pm, with a fabulous home-made pie plus a pint of real ale for only £10.95.

They have then gone on to introduce a separate menu for those looking for something a little more

special, with dishes such as honey-smoked pork belly, served with bubble and squeak and a pea puree, or slow roasted shoulder of lamb, served in a potato cake with roasted carrots and herb salad - (both taken from the “Something Special” Menu and priced at £12.95 each). They have kept their popular “Smokehouse Menu” with some updates and delicious twists on traditional dishes, cooked ‘low and slow’. The “Weekly Specials”, at £9.95 each or two for £18, are still there, whilst the “a la carte” choices, (six starters, seven “Pub Classics” and three “From the Grill”) continue the theme of variety without undue expense. An all-new Grill Night, using Herefordshire beef, is now running on Fridays, from 6pm. Two grills for £25, choosing from Rib-eye, Sirloin and T-Bone steaks, is sure to be a hit! They have even brought in an “Early Bird” deal for Wednesday and Thursday, between 5pm and 7pm, with two courses for only £12.95.The kitchen team consists of Leighton, talented sous-chef Ben Allen, and Oliver Thorley. Ben has a number of years’ experience and has worked his way through the ranks, sharingLeighton’s passion for food. The front-of-house team, led by Reece Johnson and Kayleigh Exton, are very enthusiastic and work hard to ensure that the eating-out experience at The Nag’s Head is second to none. The reviews, after only two months, are saying that the food and service are very good indeed!

Here at Iron Horse Ranch House we pride ourselves on American cuisine with infl uences and fl avours from the Southern States of the USA.These chocolate and cherry brownies are absolutely gorgeous, with a thin crisp crust and rich, gooey centre. Best served at room temperature with whipped double cream or ice cream for true indulgence.

INGREDIENTS400g dark chocolate (at least 55% cocoa solids)325g unsalted butter6 whole eggs2 egg yolks300g caster sugar50g cocoa powder80g plain fl our (can be replaced with gluten free fl our)70g fresh cherries, destoned and chopped30g crushed and chopped unsalted pecan nuts

DIRECTIONS1 Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and base-line a 20cm-square baking tin with baking parchment.

2 Gently melt chocolate and unsalted butter together in a bowl over hot water until smooth then cool a little.

3 Whisk 6 whole eggs, 2 yolks and caster sugar together until pale. Fold the melted chocolate mix into the eggs. Sieve cocoa powder with plain fl our

then fold everything together until evenly mixed. Fold in the chopped fresh cherries. Sprinkle the top with chopped pecans.

4 Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 25 to 35 minutes, or until slightly risen at the edges. The crust on top should be very slightly cracked. Don’t despair if it doesn’t look cooked! The brownie will need to cool completely to go solid. Allow to cool completely in the tin.

5 When completely cool, cut into 12 and indulge - you should have a thin crisp crust and a rich, gooey centre.

6 Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

A good year for the tax man!

When you die, it is the responsibility of your executors or personal representatives to submit an account to HMRC, detailing all of your assets. If this list (after the deduction of any debts) adds up to more than £325,000 for an individual (£650,000 for a couple), then it is significantly likely that you will be making a contribution to HMRC’s next record year!

The best way to demonstrate this is by way of a simple example:

If you jointly leave an estate of £800,000. Your representatives on death claim up to £650,000, without any tax being paid. Anything over £650,000, which in this example is £150,000, is then chargeable to tax at 40%. So the tax payable by your representatives would be £60,000.

During the tax year which ended on April 5th, 2016, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has taken a record £4.6 billion in Inheritance Tax. This is indeed a staggering figure, with many people still being unaware of the tax consequences to their estates when they die.

House prices in our area are on the increase. Secondly, life insurance arrangements are taken into consideration on death and, finally, there is now much more flexibility over pension funds. Take these together, and it is easy to see how the values build.

Inheritance Tax is no longer simply just a tax for the wealthy. The most important thing to do is examine whether you’ll pay Inheritance Tax and what to do about it. As always, we believe that advice is essential.

Our body shape and bodyweight are determined by the energy (kilocalories) we consume in the form of food and drink, and the energy (kilocalories) we expend in our physical activities. It is a simple fact that, if our energy input is greater than our energy output, our bodies will store excess energy in the form of body fat.

We have a choice in determining our bodyweight by controlling our input and output energy levels and, of course, this may be achieved by paying close attention to diet alone. Inheritance Tax: It Pays to Seek Advice!

Treasury sees 70% boom in Inheritance Tax revenues in five years, as rising property prices sweep middle-class households into death duty fold.

Last year, HM Revenue and Customs collected £4.6billion from Inheritance Tax, compared to £2.69billion in 2010, data from the Office for National Statistics reveals.

While the threshold for paying IHT remains frozen at £325,000 since 2009, soaring property prices have dragged an increasing number of middle-class households into paying the death duties.

And it gets worse, under a proposed Government scheme, households with estates worth over £2million could be subject to a £20,000 probate fee, a 9000% increase on the current rate.

Microsoft are getting very aggressive in trying to ‘persuade’ users to move to Windows 10, and this will get worse as we approach the July deadline for a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users. Many users are happy with their Windows version, so let’s look at how we can get rid of these nagging messages.

Hide the Windows 10 upgrade icon: If, at the bottom right of your desktop, you see the Windows 10 upgrade icon, then you can hide this by clicking on the small triangle on your task bar. You’ll then see a list of notifications. Find GWX and change it to Hide icon and notifications.

Remove the Windows 10 upgrade from Windows Update The Windows 10 update prompting is actually delivered to you via the standard Windows Update process that most of us are familiar with. It is actually update KB3035583 and, as an update this can be removed.

• Go into Windows Update (from All Programs in Windows 7) • Next click on Update History. Now scroll down to find KB3035583. • Click the Installed Update button at the top of the window, find KB3035583 again • Right click (ie; press right mouse button on it) and select Uninstall

Change your Windows Update settings to hide ‘Recommended Updates’ The final piece is to now change your Windows Updates so that it only suggests ‘important’ updates (ie; essential ones). To do this go back into your Windows Update screen. Click on Change Settings and then untick the box that selects ‘Give me recommended updates’. This will prevent the KB3035583 from reloading.

The process above will work in most cases but becomes ineffective if Microsoft change the upgrade to a mandatory (important) upgrade rather than a recommended one. It wouldn’t surprise me if they took this step at some point in the future.

Another method, as reported by a national magazine recently, is to use an application called GWX Control Panel to block the Windows 10 update process. This is available online from http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/. This is reported as being effective but I cannot vouch for it as I have never used it, preferring the manual method detailed above.

BABeSIoSIS - ADVICe For Dog oWnerS

Babesiosis is spread most commonly by ticks, but also occasionally in dog bites and blood transfusions. Babesia are protozoan parasites that attack red blood cells of dogs, causing them to break down (haemolysis) and this releases haemoglobin. This results in anaemia and jaundice. The incubation period is about two weeks, and dogs affected are usually very ill with a high fever, lethargy, red urine and anaemia and they often collapse. This can lead to organ failure.

We already recognise a similar disease called Autoimmune Haemalytic Anaemia(AIHA) which we diagnose on blood smear. Babesiosis often induces AIHA, so in future we will need to differentiate between these diseases.

Babesia can be quickly diagnosed on blood tests. There are PCR tests available that detect the presence of Babesia DNA, as well as often being visible on blood smear.

Most ticks in Europe are Babesia canis and will respond to treatment with Imidocarb Dipropionate and will recover over several weeks, if treated early. Some treated dogs can go on to be carriers for the disease and get a more chronic form of the disease later on. Many dogs will need hospitalisation and some may require blood transfusions and other fluid therapies.

Babesiosis has long been a disease seen only in Southern Europe, Asia and Africa. In the past, it has only been diagnosed in dogs returning to the UK from abroad but, recently, there has been a localised outbreak in Harlow in Essex prompting concerns that this may spread further through the country.

This disease is still extremely rare and localised in the UK. There have been no reported cases in Lincolnshire. The best control is to treat for ticks. Killing the ticks, in the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours after getting on to the dog, dramatically reduces the chance of contracting the disease, as well as reducing the spread. There are several good products on the market that can achieve this. Speak to your local vet for more information.

Welcome to the motoring section and this month I am going to be raising the question of the value of “dash cams” in vehicles. “Dash cams” are small video recording devices, which come in a wide range of complexity and can be positioned around your car, including the dashboard, to record any incidents that occur whilst driving.

My driving school car covered just shy of 30,000 miles last year, not just me driving, but my pupils on my Intensive Driving Courses! In all those miles, I can recall one solitary incident where a driver of a white van in Grantham attempted what I strongly believe to be a “crash for cash”. For those who are not aware, there was an incredible surge in insurance claims a couple of years ago, which often included costly compensation fees for a variety of medical reasons, all of which were strongly believed to be false and were deliberate

crashes for cash claims, hence the name. Although not as frequent, I still hear these days of highly suspicious incidents from my driving instructor colleagues across the U.K.

According to the Insurance Fraud Bureau, it is believed to cost purely innocent U.K. drivers hundreds of millions of pounds collectively each year. If you look carefully in front and rear windscreens, you will notice that “dash cams” are increasingly being used by drivers, not only to combat this problem of fraudulent claims, but also simply to record the variety of dangerous, careless and inconsiderate driving that is occurring on the roads these days. They come in a range of prices, matching how smart the technology is, and they should be serious food-for-thought for any drivers out there in Bourne, Deeping and surrounding areas who actually take pride in their “no claims bonus”.

Market Deeping Bowls club used to be called the ‘cabbage Patch’, but now it’s known as the cream of the greens, and comparable to any of the high quality bowls greens in the area. now in its seventieth year, the club, at the end of Douglas Road, past the community centre, started off with only three rinks, next to an area that can only be described as wasteland. in the late 1980s, the green was extended to six rinks. a few years later, with the aid of a lottery grant, a new clubhouse was built, but there was still one ongoing problem to be solved - the green that nobody wanted to go and play on, the ‘cabbage Patch’.

The committee decided that it was time for action, so two of the club’s stalwarts, Mick Biggin and Mick Caldwell called in Mark Hammond, the area’s highly respected green-keeper and, under his expert eye, they have transformed the green into one where everybody longs to play. In fact, the President of the Northants Bowling Federation, Bob Warters, wrote to the club’s secretary, Tony Coe, saying ,“ I just wanted to say how much the team that I captain in the Stamford League - Ketton Kingfishers - enjoyed playing on your refurbished green. It was a revelation.

Congratulations”. As a result, the club has accepted an invitation to be affiliated to the Northants Bowling Federation, allowing club members to enter the county competitions. They will also be hosting the final of the Stamford and District League’s prestigious Oddfellows Rosebowl Final.

An association with the adjacent Boundary Club offers the availability of their fully licensed bar facilities for after match drinks, and also fund-raising activities, such as quiz and race nights. On the competitive side, the club runs three teams in the Stamford and District Bowls League and four in the Peterborough League.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings – Rogue Traders There have been some reports recently of possible rogue traders operating in the area. It is important to know that many traders who come to your door are honest, legitimate people but there are some with the intention of scamming you out of your hard-earned cash.

Rogue traders call on unsuspecting households, offering convincing deals to try to get you to agree to have work carried out. If you accept work from a rogue trader, you’ll pay much more than you intended … for very poor, unnecessary and sometimes dangerous work.

The usual type of work offered includes garden clearance, roofing work and tarmac drives. Those who accept work may well find the price increases or the work is left unfinished.

These simple tips can be found on the Action Fraud website.

1. Don’t sign on the spot – if you are interested, ask them to come back, maybe when you have someone else with you, or you’ve shopped around.

2. Always check the trader’s identity. Never use the number on their card. Check to see if they are a member of a reputable trade body.

3. Be wary of special offers or warnings about your home - don’t get taken in by sales banter or high pressure selling techniques. Don’t be hurried into a decision, even if there is a discount.

4. Always shop around for the best price - check with other companies offering the same product first. Make sure the price and product is right for you.

5. Read the small print - always read documents carefully before you sign them and make sure you fully understand your rights.

6. Double check the facts - make sure you fully understand the total costs of the transaction.

7. Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion.

8. Don’t hand over a cash deposit – a reliable trader will never ask you to do this (even if they need materials). Never agree to go with a trader to the bank to take money out.

9. Think before you agree to a trader starting any work straight away – have a seven day cooling-off period.

10. Trust your instincts - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

And finally ... it’s OK to say no.

Remember, it’s your doorstep and your decision. If you feel pressured for any reason, ask the person to leave.
