I am so proud to welcome you to this month’s issue, which sees Discovering Deeping launch into its second year. I’d like to start off by thanking everyone who has, and continues to, make our magazine a success, from our supportive local businesses, enthusiastic contributors and the Discovering Magazine team, who work so hard behind the scenes.

And so, onto our brand new shiny July issue, which aims to keep you as up-to-date and informed about local issues, topics and events as ever. On page 9, you’ll find an interesting discussion about neighbour disputes, while waiting for you on page 14, is a mouth-watering recipe for chicken parcels – a perfect for dish for summer garden parties. This month we’ve also been thinking muscle power, on page 37, as well as finding out more about one of our beautiful local churches on page 16 – proof that we really do have something for everyone!

The Discovering Deeping team are always keen to get to know our readers, and find out even more about the local community. We really value your feedback, and would absolutely love to hear from anyone who has a new area of interest we could explore in the future. We look forward to hearing from you soon…

This time of year, seems to me, to be filled with opportunities to feel part of our global, national and local communities. Lots of us are taking breaks from the usual humdrum of life, to relax on holiday and explore foreign lands, perhaps somewhere hot like Dubai (page 6), while if you’re staying at home this July, and fancy getting out and about in the area, we are lucky enough to have a local social scene bursting with possibilities. With a wide range of festivals, fetes, fundraisers and fun days out, make sure you keep our events list (pages 44-45) somewhere handy!

It’s certainly a time to feel patriotic, with the Queen celebrating her birthday (again!), the amazing safe return of Tim Peake and his fellow astronauts, and, at the time of writing, the England football team being top of the table in the Euros. Again, locally, we have much to be proud of, as incredible individuals and determined groups both continue to make their mark. Just a quick flick through this month’s issue, shows us what a wide range of things we have to be proud of, whether it’s our local businesses’ charity work or our school students making a glowing impression in the workplace (page 10). From our Mayor and his team honouring local volunteers (page 4), to local experts offering invaluable advice. So, no matter how you decide to spend your July, I hope these pages will help you to take a minute or two to appreciate our beautiful little community and all it has to offer.

There was a superb turnout for the council’s first ‘Walking the Footpaths’ recently: over sixty people were in attendance for a sociable walk around Deeping. The next walking event will be held on July 5th at 6.30pm, meeting outside the Town Hall.I had my Civic Service on June 12th at St.

Guthlac’s Church, followed by afternoon tea at the Coronation Hall. The event was attended by over fifty civic invitees. A Guard of Honour was supplied by the Army Cadet Force, 2 Squadron, 14 Troop, Market Deeping Detachment, Queen’s Royal Lancers, who are also one of my charities for this year, along with the Deepings’ Men’s Group. The afternoon tea was supplied by Lilli’s Tearoom - what a delight! We also, of course, paid tribute to the Queen during her birthday month.

Words from the MayorCouncillor Wayne Lester

Don’t forget, ‘Meet your Councillor’ surgery at the Library on July 2nd from 10.00am until 12.00 where you can see both Cllr. Adam Brooks of Market Deeping Town Council and Cllr. Andrew Bowell of Deeping St. James Parish Council. If you have any local issues that we can assist you with, we would love for you to pop along.

Dates for your Diary:■ Sunday July 3rd – The Deepings Carnival – Starting in Deeping St. James and parading to Market Deeping on to John Eve Field.■ Saturday July 16th – St Guthlac’s Church Fete in the vicar’s garden on Church Street. ■ Sunday August 7th – Deeping Raft Race.

Over ninety volunteers joined us for an evening of thanksgiving during National Volunteers’ Week at the Deepings’ Community Centre. It was a wonderful evening, honouring a wide range of local volunteers, who do so much to help others in the community.

Dubai Dream Holiday

Eat with locals or take a gourmet tour of the world• Dubai is one of the world’s most exciting dining destinations; a sprawling city with unparalleled multicultural cuisine.

• Simple street-side Arabic cuisine of Zaroob and legendary Pakistani hotspot, Ravi.

• On Fridays, most restaurants across town open their doors for brunch – a Dubai institution, where family and friends gather for a long lunch.

• Pay a visit to Mercury Lounge for Downtown skyline views; 360º to gaze at the iconic Burj Al Arab. If you’re looking for atmosphere, I recommend a table in the clouds at At.mosphere on Level 122 of the Burj Khalifa, and the Jetty Lounge for relaxed seaside and iconic Palm Jumeirah vistas.

• Bazerkan, Capitol Hill is a chain of Lebanese eateries offering authentic dishes and fun experiences.

• Aprons & Hammers, Dubai International Marine Club is the perfect casual seafood spot.

• Al Qasr is a traditional Middle Eastern restaurant serving fantastic Lebanese cuisine.

Shopping Capital of the worldNowhere is Dubai’s harmony of old and new more evident than in its incredible shopping scene. With over ninety-five shopping malls (the largest of which is The Dubai Mall at more than twelve

Whether you would prefer to relax and soak up the sunshine or embrace your adventurous side, Dubai is the perfect location for a summer holiday. There is no place in the world as diverse and rich in variety as this spectacular city. Here are just some of the things you can get involved in on your summer break in Dubai.

million square feet), you can shop ‘til you drop. No one mall is the same as the other; the Ibn Battuta Mall (named after the Arabic explorer) is country themed, and you can also head across town to the Pharaonic Wafi Mall.

You must see the stunning waterfall and Aquarium at The Dubai Mall too!

Beach blissDubai has fun in the sun for everyone — especially with all the amazing watersport and beach activities on offer.

Dubai’s glorious sandy beaches, warm Arabian Gulf waters and year-round sunshine are the perfect ingredients for

anyone looking to be in the sun and near the water.

There is no more glamorous way to soak up the sun than by lazing on a cushioned lounger on the beachfront and making full use of the waiter service available.

Amazing waterparks; Aquaventure at Atlantis (with a slide that cuts through the middle of a shark tank!), and Wild Wadi at Jumeirah Beach Hotel are also “a must” when visiting Dubai.

Family Fun for everyoneIf you’re looking for a value-packed holiday for your family, Dubai is the ideal destination.

Families can head out on a desert safari across the dunes in a four-wheel drive, or go sand boarding, ride a camel or handle a falcon, whilst enjoying Emirati hospitality at a sumptuous buffet!

Grab a prime position along Burj Khalifa Lake to watch the record-breaking Dubai fountain show that kicks off every half hour from 6pm outside The Dubai Mall.

Hotel kids’ clubs and theme parks such as KidZania in The Dubai Mall ensure that parents are guaranteed some quiet time, knowing their little ones are in safe hands and off having the times of their lives!

Discover Dubai’s Culture and ArtIn Dubai, modern and historic culture are celebrated in equal measure. You can visit the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), where you’ll learn of local customs and enjoy a traditional Emirati meal.

Ride across the Creek in a wooden abra (boat) and admire the traditional dhow fishing boats that line the waterway.

Outdoor Sports and Adventure Dubai offers so many opportunities if you’re seeking adventure. Gallop across the desert on an Arabian thoroughbred or tee off on a floodlit golf course at midnight, and, if you’re feeling extremely brave, jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet.

Hot-air balloon rides over Dubai’s desert landscape offer amazing views. A similar – albeit faster – sky-high experience is also offered by Skydive Dubai from its desert campus at Margham.

Dubai is horse-mad, with stables all across the emirate. Head to the Al Sahra Desert Resort Equestrian Centre or Al Jiyad Stables to ride horseback across the desert at sunset.

A desert safari is another popular venture, as is sand boarding on the Big Red dune – Dubai’s ‘black run’.

There are plenty of watersports to enjoy in Dubai, which can be very refreshing in the high summer heat. Cyclists aren’t forgotten about either, with 140 kilometres of track in

neighbourhoods, such as Jumeirah and Bur Dubai to explore.

EventsFrom sport to art, music and food, there’s always an event on in Dubai.

The internationally renowned Dubai Rugby Sevens and the lavish Dubai World Cup Carnival are staple sporting events, while the Emirates Literature Festival, Dubai Art Season, Dubai International Film Festival and Dubai Jazz Festival round off the major arts offerings.

Foodies should not miss the Dubai Food Festival, while fitness enthusiasts can partake in the annual Dubai Marathon or Cycle Challenge.

Neighbours – Everybody needs them, but ….

You should not hang things on your neighbour’s fence, neither use it as support for your plants, nor paint your side of it without their permission.

There is no general legal requirement to maintain hedges. However, you should not allow unkempt hedges to block footpaths or obscure a motorist’s view. Your property may have a covenant, requiring you to maintain your hedge so you should check your deeds. Tall hedges may be covered by regulations under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 and, if certain criteria apply, your Local Authority will, for a fee, assess the hedge and decide whether any action should be taken to reduce its height.

Trees can add a great deal of character to a garden, but they can also cause a nuisance to a next door neighbour when they start encroaching

over the fence. If the branches of a neighbour’s tree start to grow over to your side, you can cut them back to the boundary between you and your neighbour’s property, as long as the tree is not under a tree preservation order, or in a conservation area. The branches and any fruit on them which you have cut down from your side still belong to the tree owner, so you must return them. You would be well-advised to have a word with your neighbour before trimming back the branches, to let them know your intentions. This will ensure that good neighbourly relations are preserved.

Neighbour disputes can easily spiral out of control, so an amicable resolution to disputes is always the best route. Try to discuss the problem with them but, if you’re worried about approaching them, write a letter, explaining the problem.

| Legal Corner advice from Double and Megson

One of the most common causes of neighbour disputes involves boundaries. If you are unsure as to where your boundary is, or who owns it, the starting point is always your title deeds.

Students experience the world of work!Year 10 students from The Deepings School had opportunities to experience two weeks in the world of work, through a superb range of placements, both locally and further afield including: Marks & Spencer, Park Air, Tesco, Morrisons, Anglia Co-op, Vivacity, Peterborough United FC, John Lewis, Bauer Media, solicitors, architects, vets and local primary and nursery schools. As a result of their keen attitudes, a number of students have been offered Saturday and holiday jobs and some will have the opportunity to join an apprenticeship programme following their exams next year. The school received excellent feedback from the organisations involved, who remarked on the outstanding contribution students

had made during the fortnight.

Mrs Linda Taylor who manages the work experience programme said: “We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all the companies and organisations that have provided a placement to our students. We really appreciate the time and resources that are involved in providing work experience and value their support. We are proud of the way students conducted themselves and this experience will enable them to further develop their work related skills and help in their future career planning.”

A Handful of Harmonies In July 2016, A Handful of Harmonies celebrate the fifth anniversary of the opening of the original schools in Langtoft and Bourne. They now run successfully, along with six groups around the local area.

These “ladies in pink” meet throughout the year to enjoy singing together in an informal setting and to perform at local events. As a community group, they also raise money for various charities, and for the past two years have adopted Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall Hospice as their Charity of the Year. New members are always welcome – to find out more please visit the website http://www.handfulofharmonies.co.uk/

They also have a series of summer workshops which are themed around popular musicals or artists. This is an excellent way of finding out about how they work and are always great fun.

This year, the workshops will take place in Langtoft Village Hall from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm on the following dates: August 2nd, 4th, 8th and 11th.

The cost is £6 per session and more details will be published nearer to the time.

Tesco Get ‘Pretty Muddy’ This month saw a fantastic effort by staff at Tesco in Market Deeping, who slipped on their pink t-shirts, dived down mud slides and baked yummy cakes, all in the name of Cancer Research UK. The team from the local branch all pulled together, to raise a fabulous £1420.00 in donations from their generous customers and supporters.

The fundraising took place on Saturday 4th June, both in-store and in the grounds at Burghley House, where a team took part in the ‘Pretty Muddy’ 5k Race for Life. The hugely popular event saw a local team, from the store, crawling through muddy tunnels, cargo nets and other obstacles, finishing covered head to toe in glorious mud!

Back at base in Deeping, over the course of the same weekend, staff were busy selling homemade cakes, holding a teddy tombola and a raffle, consisting of prizes donated by Tesco itself, and many other local businesses including Linfords, Empire Gym and Shampooch, to name a few. Staff from Market Deeping Tesco would like to thank these local businesses, and, of course, their customers, who helped make this amazing donation to Cancer Research UK possible.

Celebrating the 80th Opening of the Peterborough LidoThis year, Peterborough Lido celebrates its eightieth anniversary and on May 28th, all visitors were treated to free admission on its opening day of the season.

The popular outdoor swimming pool on Bishops Road sees over 20,000 visitors pass through the turnstiles every summer with local residents and visitors enjoying the great outdoor swimming facilities. Families and keen swimmers can enjoy the large heated 50m pool, a learner pool and a paddling pool for toddlers - all set in this iconic Art Deco inspired building.

This year’s opening was especially nostalgic having seen 80 successful seasons with generations visiting since its opening in 1936. The opening also marked one of the first

official engagements for the new Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor David Sanders, with a 1930s band playing songs of the era.

Cllr. Sanders also unveiled a plaque and weathervane in memory of locally renowned lifeguard and personality Walter Cornelius who worked for many years as a Lifeguard at the Peterborough Lido. Walter worked tirelessly to raise money for local charities, breaking over 50 world records and is most well-known for his attempt to fly across the River Nene wearing a set of homemade wings – the weathervane beautifully captures this iconic image.

Visitors to the Peterborough Lido can relax on the expansive sunbathing terraces, swim in three heated outdoor pools and children can enjoy the

new themed play area. Food and refreshments are available at the outdoor Lido café and families can enjoy their own picnic on the large grass lawn.

The Lido offers swimming with family-friendly music as well as a range of summer event days which include the fun inflatable sessions with giant blow up zorbs and boats, a brilliant fun session not to be missed.

Also as part of this year’s event, Vivacity is pleased to announce it will be offering FREE swimming to all children under 5 at the Peterborough Lido and at all other Vivacity swimming pools across the city.

The Lido will open daily from 9am until 7pm, throughout the summer.

The Deepings Raft Race 2016 - Have you built your raft yet? Sunday August 7th draws closer, so get cracking on those wonderfully wacky designs! Don’t forget, this year’s theme is “Raft Race goes to the Movies” and whilst you don’t have to dress up or design your rafts on this theme, it does add to the fun!

Our main nominated charities this year are MECP2 Duplication (Brody & Friends) and The Deepings Community Centre. If you enter a team, you can

do it just for fun (and that will be helping towards our great causes) or you can collect for your own charity - the booking form gives details.

We still have a few slots for people willing to help out as a marshall on the day (2 hour slots) and, in appreciation, receive a voucher for free food/drink.

IT’S NOT JUST THE RAFTS

There will be a huge array of varied stalls, classic cars

and bikes, a funfair, music and dance demonstrations, two “bus bars”, competitions including prizes for the best fancy dress and lots more…

Most of all, we want the public to put this fantastic, fun and very unusual event in their diaries – Sunday August 7th – and to come and enjoy the day.

For more information, or to enter a raft, visit our website

by Rex Needle| A little bit of History

Once inside, the visitor finds a long transitional south arcade of seven bays and continued by a long chancel, all of such grandeur that it has been described by the noted architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner in his description of the church in Buildings of England: Lincolnshire as “astounding”.

The reason is that the church was founded as part of a now lost 11th century Benedictine priory which was destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, one of the most revolutionary events in English history, when Henry VIII disbanded Catholic monasteries, priories, convents and friaries throughout the country, appropriated

Discovering . . . the Priory church

their income, disposed of their assets, and reassigned or dismissed their former members and functions.

Worship continued at the church itself while the priory fell into ruins and stones were used to build various other domestic buildings in the locality including a manor house. Further calamity followed when many of the church’s ornaments were removed and the rood screen was taken down and burned on the village green. The altar hangings and vestments were sold, and the money given to the poor.

The priory had been founded as part of the Benedictine order by Baldwin Fitzgilbert in 1139 and so the building we see today is of unexpected size with a tower and a spire that can be seen ten miles away. This is the largest of the churches in the Deepings, dedicated to St James with seating for 800 people and is now Grade I listed. The building is a mixture of Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles although the tower and spire were added in 1717, most probably the work of the architect and stonemason George Portwood, after the original had collapsed as a result of continual flooding over the centuries which had rotted the foundations.

The porch is adorned with a hood mould and dog tooth decoration indicating a date between 1200 and 1300 and among the monuments to be found inside is one of a knight from the early 14th century, his head under a canopy, his body hidden or covered with only his feet sticking out, while the expected curiosum in such a church is a rare graveside shelter reputedly used by the parson to keep dry during rainy burial services.

Archive photograph from 1998

One of the great surprises of the Priory Church at Deeping St James is the spacious interior that we have come to associate with a far more important building than a village church.

Creative Touch | Consumer AdviceStay Safe this Barbecue Season!SUMMER’S here – and whatever the weather, don’t we Brits just love our barbecues?

A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun.

If this sounds like your ideal barbecue (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it.

The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. The last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS), an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in one year, in the UK, having had an accident involving a barbecue.

The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were:

• Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800.

• Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200.

• The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel.

However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is fun-filled and not a flaming failure.

• Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture, such as wooden or plastic chairs.

• Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space.

• Never leave a barbecue unattended.

• Never let children too close to the barbecue.

• Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues.

• If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder.

• When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy.

• Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair.

• To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be “fire-safety savvy”.

There are always plenty of jobs to do in the vegetable patch and allotment, too numerous for me to mention here, but a few tips are:-

Tomatoes• Don’t forget to nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes; they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems. • When there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. • Water them with a liquid feed as soon as the first fruits are formed. Likewise for peppers. Watering• Keep crops well-watered. It is better to water them frequently and generously as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting and premature bolting. • Watering at the beginning or end of the day is preferable as the temperatures are lower and the sun not so strong. • Spreading a mulch will help to slow down evaporation and suppress weeds.General• When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip. • Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants.• Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil, and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed.• Check potatoes and earth-up if necessary to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light.

One of the main jobs this month involves harvesting and enjoying the result of all the hard work of spring and early summer. It is time to lift garlic: hang bulbs out in the sun or in an airy shed. Last year, I learned to plait them by using a tutorial on YouTube and was enjoying their freshness for several months after – they were so much better than those from the supermarket! Fortuitously, the garlic harvest coincides with that of tomatoes. Given some basil (and a few olives) you have the makings of many delicious Italian dishes. Basil needs warm growing conditions and now is the time to plant: you can buy the pots from the supermarket and plant those out. Onions also need drying well before they are stored: a few days before harvesting, loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry day to lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun. Don’t be tempted to store them until they are thoroughly dry, as they will not keep as long and probably rot.

Maybe you will have time for a cuppa whilst working (or a glass of Pimms!) – sit back in the sunshine, listen to the birds and marvel over the crops you have grown: there’s nothing more rewarding than a meal of home grown produce. Enjoy!

| Your Finances by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

If the Bank of England’s chief economist can’t understand pensions, what hope is there?

At Liberty Partnership, we have been talking about pensions for some time and, in particular, the changes to retirement planning introduced last year. Our goal has been to educate and highlight to you all that your pension is a very ‘real asset’, one that should be actively managed and reviewed. Think of it as being like savings that you hold in an investment, which you would keep a close eye on. It should not be ignored until the point that you retire – to do so, in our experience is highly likely to lead to disappointment at that time!

The changes to pensions last year were significant and will make a difference to those who may be looking to retire or withdraw capital early from their pension arrangements, for those people wishing to

The above statement relates to an article recently published reflecting views made by Andy Haldane, the chief economist of the Bank of England. Mr Haldane’s remarks very much focused on the ever changing and complicated world of retirement planning and, whilst his comments were made ‘tongue in cheek’, they have raised important issues.

create more flexibility over how they can take an income from their pension funds or for those who now wish to improve the death benefits for their families.

You need to start asking questions such as how your pension will work for you? Where and how is your money invested? What will my future retirement look like? And most importantly, how much money will I have in retirement?

If you know the answers to these questions, then you may be one step ahead of Mr Haldane; if you don’t, then please feel free to contact our offices and we will be happy to help you (and perhaps Mr Haldane!) with a free initial consultation to discuss your planning.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader PartnershipConsumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible

at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Deeping Gate, Deeping St James, Deeping St Nicholas, Maxey, Northborough, West Deeping & Langtoft

areas and manager Mark Sherwood agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

With the constant nagging of PC users to install Windows10, a question I am often asked is how long a user can expect to receive support for their current operating system, if they reject the upgrade.

This is one area where Microsoft are actually very open and public, and it can be found on their Product Lifecycle information page. To quote Microsoft themselves, “Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy provides consistent and predictable guidelines for product support availability when a product releases and throughout that product’s life. By understanding the product support available, customers are better able to maximize the management of their IT investments and strategically plan for a successful IT future.” Uniquely, they have not only been open about it, but also explained it in fairly plain English!

You can find Microsoft’s Product Lifecycle information online on their web site at:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle/search

This service will allow you to search for the lifecycle information of any Microsoft product.

The most common question asked however relates to the Windows operating system support itself, so here are the dates that are currently published by Microsoft.

IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses

Social media setup, advice and training (Facebook, Twitter, Linked In & blogging)

Sales, Support & Training for:

Desktop & Laptop PCs Tablets & Tablet PCs Wireless & Small Networks Smart TVs Smart Phones

So what does this mean in general terms? The key date for a home or small business user is the ‘End of Extended Support’ date. This is where Microsoft completely turn its back on a version, providing no further support or security fixes. Some may remember that it did this for XP on April 8th 2014, and now anyone using XP online is open to hackers and scammers as the product is over two years ‘out of support’. It truly is a high risk to anyone still using XP online. (Note: Microsoft do offer support to many banks and government agencies on XP, but at a very inflated cost and this is not extended to the general XP release.)

As large business and government customers rely heavily on these published dates, Microsoft tend to stick to them fairly rigidly and they rarely change. Given this fact, it makes me question why Microsoft are so aggressive about Windows 7 and 8 users upgrading to Windows 10 as they are already committed to supporting it until 2020 and 2023 respectively.

Skeletal muscle is constructed from bundles of muscle fibres which contract and shorten or relax and lengthen to create movement around a joint.

“Fast twitch” fibres are used during intense anaerobic exercise, while “Slow twitch” fibres are recruited for moderate intensity aerobic activities. Fast and slow twitch fibres cannot be converted into each other but “Intermediate fibres” can adapt in different ways dependent upon the type of training performed.

The number and type of muscle fibres we use when performing an exercise function is key to our strength and is determined by our central nervous system via motor neurons (nerves) which carry messages to the muscle fibres. A motor neuron and all the muscle fibres it activates are known collectively as a “motor unit”, each motor unit consists of a single type of fibre which is spread throughout the muscle.

The manner and intensity of your training determines the number and size of motor units and the type of muscle fibre you recruit for any movement or exercise - the more intense the training, the greater the number and size of motor units you recruit, employing fast twitch fibres that act powerfully on the muscles being used. If your genetic build limits the number of available fast twitch fibres in the muscle, the more intensely you train the more your intermediate fibres will adapt to work as fast twitch.

Although there is a strict correlation between the size (cross sectional area) of muscle fibres and the strength they are capable of developing, if strength

Muscle Size versus Muscle Strength

is your focus, you must train your muscles to recruit as many fibres and get as much force out of each fibre as possible. This is how people with low muscle volume can lift heavy weights; it’s because their intensive training style recruits larger motor neurons which activate more muscle fibres to generate a greater force.

So the manner in which you train can determine between muscle size and/or muscle strength.

Giving Back – Helps us AllI was recently invited to be a lecturer with Anglia Professional Training. The invitation came out of the blue and came in the form of a real compliment. “We have been asking around to see who could teach this course and your name kept coming up”, I was told. So, in March, I started to lecture for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executive’s qualifications in The Law of Wills and Succession and Probate Practice, and I would have to say it’s one of the best things I have ever done.

I had visions of delivering monologues to bored students who were doing the qualifications on their way to becoming commercial lawyers or criminal prosecutors, but I was wrong. My students have been engaged, keen to learn the details of the subject – they have had exams to pass and it was my responsibility to make sure it happened. In fact, they will have taken their exams in June, which is a daunting prospect for us all.

But the most important thing that has come from being a lecturer is the benefits that it has had for my clients, as well as for myself. My students challenge my every word, so I need to be right and I need to

be sure I’m right – after all, if I’m wrong and an exam question comes up, then I am responsible. The more niche areas of planning are back in focus, things that sometimes get overlooked see the light and receive full scrutiny from minds eager to learn.

I know I am a better person for it, I know my clients are being served better because of it and I am confident that my students will have passed their exams. So, by giving a little back, by sharing my knowledge and experience, everybody wins. It just makes me so happy!

The Wellhead Practice Welcomes duncan ford, AcupuncturistMy name is duncan ford BA (Hons), Lic.ac, MBAcC Cert KHT. I am an acupuncturist, and I recently joined the Wellhead Practice, here in Bourne as part of the complementary healthcare team. I am a local practitioner, with practices in Stamford and Spalding.

I obtained my First Class Honours degree in Traditional Acupuncture at CTA in Hatton, which was the oldest college of acupuncture in Europe. I have full membership with the British Acupuncture Council, the leading regulatory body for the practice of acupuncture in the UK.

I am married with two daughters and, outside of work, (when I have spare time that is) I am mainly being a dad and a husband, but I also enjoy yoga, martial arts and gardening.

My first contact with acupuncture was through the world of Chinese martial arts, in particular Taijiquan and Qigong, of which I have been a student for the last seventeen years. I feel my interest in this internal martial art has led me to understand the fundamental building blocks that underpin the foundations of traditional Chinese medicine.

I am fully committed to the practice of acupuncture and continuously work to develop myself professionally, so as to be able to provide the best possible care for my patients.

I regularly attend postgraduate courses to further develop myself as a practitioner and to deepen my understanding of this living tradition. I have also trained in many different styles of Traditional Acupuncture including Five Element, TCM, Tungs family lineage, Tans balance method, Japanese Acupuncture and Korean Hand Therapy.

Acupuncture may be able to help a wide range of conditions. If you have considered acupuncture treatment, or would just like to know if it could help a particular condition, then please contact the practice and I would be happy to discuss this with you in more detail.

Now well into their second year on Bourne’s Exeter Street, Wayne Smith and his team of veterinary surgeons, nurses and administrators are looking to build further on to the strong foundations established so far. The enthusiastic, and entirely compassionate, Mr Smith is seeking to expand into a wider area of South Lincolnshire, thus enabling more pet owners to access his team’s enviable skills and expertise, in order to enhance their pet’s life and ensure they stay healthy, without having to cost them the earth!

The Alder Practice pride themselves on the level of service offered to all clients and their pets, specialising in some orthopaedic procedures,

as well as reptile and exotic animal consultations. All of the veterinary surgeons have many years’ experience in practice and all participate in in-service training. The vitally important veterinary nurses in the practice are given the opportunity to further develop their expertise too. Increasingly, many complicated operations and procedures are therefore able to be carried out at the surgery, reducing the need for very expensive referrals elsewhere. To facilitate this, considerable investment in specialist equipment has also been required.

It can sometimes be difficult to keep up with your pet’s veterinary care, especially if they need extensive treatment or fall ill unexpectedly. For that reason, the Alder Practice offers guaranteed same-day appointments if your pet needs an urgent check-up or assessment. Additionally, deferred

payment schemes are available if your pet needs unexpected and expensive treatment.

“Every animal has a right to life, unless in permanent pain or a danger to society” is Wayne’s philosophy. So, when he hears of animals being in danger of being put to sleep, purely as a result of the owner being unable to pay for treatment, his hackles are raised. A solution must be sought and his deferred payment scheme, along with newly introduced, “Flexible Health Plans”, are designed to alleviate such a threat.

One section of their mightily impressive web-site (www.alder-vets.co.uk) includes many fascinating personal details about the “families” of all the staff

at the Alder Practice. Just how many pets, their names, and the wide range cared for by them, is glowing testimony as to how they are, as caring human beings – clearly the type of people in whom you can feel confident of laying your trust, when your own pet is in their hands.

There are times when injured wild animals and birds, along with stray pets, find their way to Wayne’s door, and he is increasingly making the journey to Lincoln, to the Weirfield Wildlife Hospital. At this specialist centre, they are able to treat, and usually return to the wild, those damaged creatures, for whom Wayne feels so much sympathy, whilst the strays can hopefully be re-homed.

DO NOT HUG YOUR DOG?

This research was carried out by looking at pictures posted on the internet of owners cuddling their dogs, and then assessing the dogs’ reaction, in relation to known dog behaviour . The argument is that, because dogs are cursorial (designed for running ) that immobilising a dog with a hug will cause it stress.

In the study, 81.6% of pictures showed one or more signs of distress, 7.6 % of pictures showed pleasure, whilst 10.8 % displayed neither. There is no doubt in my mind that dogs enjoy hugs but, as with humans, this has to be by mutual consent and at the right time . How often do we see children being hugged by an elderly relative when they have not consented to it? You get the same look that dogs give when they have not consented.

There is a valid point here that we should not assume our pets want hugs or even attention from us, all the time . We have to invite each other to make contact and interaction. We very much underestimate our dogs. They have a full emotional landscape and are

For more information, please contact the surgery on 01778 422863.

A recent report from an eminent human psychologist who has canine interests says that we should not hug our dogs . But what do you do when your dog insists on hugging you? When I am sitting on the settee at night, I am covered in dogs wanting cuddles and attention.

not the dumb animals that I heard described on a recent radio programme. They may not be able to talk, but they communicate to us in so many other ways.

I think the study done with these pictures on the internet is fundamentally flawed, in that many of these pictures were initiated by the dogs’ owners to show their loving relationship with their pet, and have thus been staged. I am sure that things would have looked different if the pictures had been taken in a more natural setting . We should also remember that most dogs do not like being lifted up, and that even consented hugs are better at the dog’s level. The fact that 7.6% of pictures showed pleasure indicates that dogs do find hugs enjoyable in the right situation.

There is one area that needs careful attention. That is when young children hug dogs. Young children have not yet learned that there are situations when hugs are not wanted, and dogs are often wary of the unpredictable nature of young children. It is not uncommon for young children to be bitten when hugging a dog and this is because the dog has not consented.

Your relationship with your dog is not dissimilar to that with a close family member, so go out there and enjoy those hugs (when mutually needed!)

Willoughby School, caters for students with severe and profound learning needs. Students can join the school from the age of two and leave at nineteen, (which may rise to twenty-five if our proposed new provision is achieved). Our students come from a wide geographical area, covering south-west Lincolnshire and Rutland . All students have their own individual academic, pastoral and medical needs. Class sizes are small (ten maximum), with a class teacher and up to five teaching assistants supporting the teaching of the students, whilst also meeting their medical and care needs. The expectations of the school are very high, in line with our partners in the mainstream school sector. High standards of student attendance, dress, behaviour and learning are of the utmost importance. A huge emphasis is placed upon preparing our students for life beyond school.

My own journey into Special Education is not unique. Like many people, I was aware of Special Education, but knew little else about it. Having taught mainstream PE for twelve years, I was seeking a new challenge. Encouraged by my wife who is a primary school teacher, I went to look

round a special school which was specifically looking to further their academic curriculum. From that very first visit, I immediately felt at home. What struck me from the outset was the friendly, positive and caring environment: the school felt like an extended family. The whole school community was working together to achieve the best academic and pastoral outcomes.

Mainstream schools are under huge academic pressure, in a world that is dominated by A Levels and GCSE A* - C grades. Special schools have high expectations in all aspects of school life, but also offer a fully rounded curriculum. This must meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, but also attend to the specific needs of every individual student. At Willoughby, students study a broad range of subjects with an emphasis on Maths and English, but life skills and preparation for students leading a fulfilling and independent life are given a very high priority too. Students need the detailed, individualised support that they receive from every staff member. The work you do is vitally important.

The outstanding staff who work at Willoughby describe their careers as a vocation, not a job. You don’t enter teaching, especially Special Education for financial gain. You do so because you want to make a difference to people’s lives. A career in Special Education undeniably helps you achieve this.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Tom Ingram is the owner of BIG TOM Driving School Five-Day Intensive Driving Courses in Bourne, Peterborough, Grantham,

Stamford, Spalding, Boston and Lincoln Telephone: 0800 689 4174

Welcome to my motoring section. I trust you join me in enjoying these beautiful sunny days in Bourne, deeping and surrounding areas. I would like to extend a big thank you to the readers who e-mailed me last month, regarding the issue of how close the nearest driving test centres are to us. Excuse the pun, but it is a “hot” topic that the dVSA will need to monitor closely.

With these soaring temperatures, I see that we are also experiencing record numbers of vehicles on our roads and people learning to drive too. The sheer quantity of driving is eye- watering. Three hundred and sixteen billion miles of travelling on UK roads occurred last year, 78% of traffic is via car. Fifty years ago, 50% of men and 10% of women had driving licences; those figures are now 80% for men and 67% for women. In addition to this, the number of drivers aged seventy years and over is rising by ten thousand a month*.

But for me, in my world of driving training, I do have to keep an eye on quality rather than quantity. A recent survey** indicates that one in three

young drivers who have passed their tests do not feel confident with real-life driving, and that is a concern. A glance at the fatality figures displayed on our Lincolnshire roads, at the time of writing, shows seventeen last year between January and May, but up to twenty-four for the same period in 2016 – this tends to suggest that there is no room for complacency, and every effort must be made in continually improving road safety figures for BIG TOM customers who come to train with us.

One last word connected to safety, I did mention this last summer too, but I think it is worthy of repeating – don’t take any chances with our four-legged friends being left in vehicles in these temperatures. Very rarely would any driver deliberately cause severe distress or death to a dog left in a hot vehicle, so the best answer by far is to not leave them unaccompanied at all – no matter how short a time you think you are going to be.

Happy and safe driving.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings - Child Sexual ExploitationAfter a recent investigation in Bourne with which I was directly involved, I thought it a good opportunity to talk about Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE).

CSE affects children and young people of all backgrounds and from all communities. It occurs when someone uses the power they have over young people to sexually abuse them. Their power may result from a difference in age, gender, intellect, strength, money or other resources. The offender can be very manipulative and will target the child to exploit a vulnerability which can be something the child wants or needs, such as accommodation, gifts, cigarettes, alcohol, or even attention. They may single out their victims and target them face-to-face, or approach them online.

Some children are groomed by the offender who then forces the child or young person into having sex with the offender or associates. Because they are groomed over time, the child may not be aware that they are a victim, and even if they are, they may think that it is their fault.

The one thing I want to stress is that the child is never ever at fault.

LOOK OUT FOR:

• UNExPLAINED GIFTS

• CHANGES IN MOOD

• GOING MISSING

• STAYING OUT LATE

• BEING SECRETIvE ABOUT WHERE THEY ARE GOING

• LACK OF INTEREST IN ACTIvITIES AND HOBBIES

• MISSING SCHOOL

The most important thing you can do is to be vigilant around those who have access to your child, in both the physical and the online world, and to keep an open dialogue with your child, as this will help them to tell you if they are worried about anything that is happening to them.

Demonstrate to children that it is all right to say “no”. We also need to help them to understand what is unacceptable behaviour, and that they should tell us or another trusted adult if someone is behaving in a way which worries them, even if they were unable to say “no” at the time.

There are many sources of information on CSE on the internet. The nSPCC has a large section devoted to child abuse and can be found at http://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse

The thinkuknow website has the latest information by age group and for parents/carers and teachers. It can be found at http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/
