THOSE who gave their lives in conflicts were remembered in Nantwich this month. Proceedings started at 1pm on Sunday November 8 with a small wreath laying service at the Airman’s Grave. Crewe Brass Band including Cheshire Constabulary Corps of Drums, then led the parade from Nantwich Civic Hall, through the town, on to a service St Mary’s Church. The poignant service from Rector Barry Wilson included The Act of Remembrance and the reading of names from the town’s roll of honour by cadets from Nantwich ATC. The sermon also linked to the ‘Poppy Spectacular’ outside the church, which on Friday saw over 500 Nantwich school children lay crosses, named with each of the 1186 from Crewe and Nantwich who had lost their lives during WW1.

Rector Barry Wilson said: “St Mary’s Church, Nantwich Town Council and the British Legion have worked hard on the spectacular poppy display at the front of the church. “Not only is it a moving tribute, but it was also wonderful to see so many of the younger generation taking part.”

NANTWICH Sainsbury’s has thanked its customers for supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, after raising £9,514 in donations. The store’s Olwyn Payton said: “We also want to recognise the volunteers from the community who gave up their time to collect the money and sell poppies, as well as the support from Richmond Village.”

FIREFIGHTERS rescued a dog from a house fire in Nantwich on Bonfire Night. One fire engine from Nantwich and another from Crewe were called to the scene on Wyche Avenue at 5.41pm on November 5. A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “When they arrived they found that there was a fire involving the oven. Crews used a hose reel jet and a large fan to deal with the incident. “They also rescued a dog from the property.”

AN exhibition of wildlife paintings runs at the Nantwich Museum until December 19. The Living Landscape is an exhibition by local artist Becky Thorley-Fox inspired by work on the Ynys Hir RSPB reserve on the Dyfi Estuary in Wales. The artwork captures the fleeting postures of birds as the light changes. Some paintings are completed on the spot but many developed from outdoor studies and sketches. Becky said: “Working from life is a continuous process, particularly when faced with the challenge of constantly moving subjects and changing conditions.”

NANTWICH In Bloom volunteers have once again scooped a gold award from Britain In Bloom. Representatives from the group joined hundreds at the ceremony at Southport where they collected the Gold Award for Best Town. The continued collaboration between Nantwich In Bloom and Nantwich Town Council has led to another success story for the town. Nantwich In Bloom is a voluntary organisation,

which receives support from the town council in the form of a grant and also through funding of baskets and planters. The Nantwich In Bloom committee have also recognised the efforts of the shops, pubs and restaurants in town, by awarding many with certificates. To find out about becoming a volunteer visit www.nantwichinbloom.org or contact secretary Sue Hughes on 01270 652513.

A MUSIC concert took place in the newly refurbished function room at Willaston Social Club on Friday November 13. The fundraising show featured local bands Brave New World and The Blue Yellows, along with party games for the youngsters and refreshments. The show raised over £400 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Organiser Claire Margerison

said, “I am overwhelmed by people’s generosity in their support of the Alzheimer’s Society, who badly need our support. “The bands gave their time for free and the Willaston Social Club gave us free hire of their function room. “I am indebted to all the people who have assisted and supported the event.”

A LONG-awaited decision on plans to build a major housing development in Stapeley has been delayed yet again. An email has been sent out to interested parties notifying them of the latest stage in the decision on plans to build 189 homes on land between Audlem Road, Broad Lane and Peter De Stapleigh Way, along with an access road. Communities and Local Government Secretary Greg Clark had been due to announce his decision on the homes plan by November 17 at the latest. But the latest news is that the issue will be further delayed with no new date given on when the decision would be made. The email, sent out by the Planning Casework Division of the Department

for Communities and Local Government, stated that the decision on the appeals will not be issued as previously stated but would remain under ‘active consideration’ and a decision would be issued ‘as soon as possible’. The original four-day public inquiry into developer Muller Property Group’s plans to build phase one of a potential 1,100 home development took place in February 2014 and the applications were refused by former Secretary of State Eric Pickles in March this year. Muller then called for a judicial review and the matter was due to be heard at the High Court on July 14. But Greg Clark, who took over from Mr Pickles, stepped in just days before that hearing, meaning Pickles’s decision was quashed.

NANTWICH Film Club has made a donation to the town’s food bank. Club chairman Mike Tilley said: “It is very satisfying for our hard working committee to once again be able to donate monies to the Nantwich Food Bank and assist the less fortunate within the community at Christmas.” The club’s next showing is ‘Human Captal’ on Monday, December 14, at 7.45pm.

A CHRISTMAS production by the Nantwich Players promises plenty of festive laughs next month. A Vicar of Dibley Christmas - The Second Coming, by Ian Gower & Paul Carpenter, runs at the Love Lane venue from December 11 to 19. Geraldine Granger is the much loved and chocolate addicted village vicar where she runs chaotic committee meetings and organises quizzes She sets up Radio Dibley, that unsurprisingly does not

run as smoothly as expected with a rather startling on-air confession from boring parish clerk Frank. Then there is the Christmas Nativity play to audition, cast and rehearse. With Hugo’s expectant wife Alice, the casting of Mary could not be bettered. Needless to say there is a riotous conclusion. This specially written script by Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter is adapted from the TV series with all the favourite characters.

ICONIC 70s band Mud are back on tour and on their way to Nantwich. The group will be hitting the stage at Nantwich Civic Hall on Friday December 18 for one night only. Almost five decades since the band first started playing Ray Stiles and Rob Davis have decided to reform an all-star outfit to recreate their classic hit records.

Both have remained busy in the music industry over the years, Rob, a successful songwriter whose credits include Spiller’s Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) and Kylie Minogue’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, and Ray is also a member of The Hollies. The duo are joined by experienced musicians and long-time friends, Pete Phipps, a founder member of the Glitter Band, XTC

and the Eurhythmics and Keith Read, founder member of the 60s rockers The Wild Angels. Together the group aim to capture the sound and spirit that was the band’s unmistakeable trademark. Amongst the hits will be Tiger Feet and Lonely This Christmas. Tickets are £20 from the Civic on 01270 628633 or www.nantwichtowncouncil.gov.uk

THE Dabbers have enjoyed a successful month, topping the league with a 3-0 victory over Hyde. The side have also progressed in the FA Trophy after demolishing Kings Lynn 5-1. Nantwich Town will visit National League North side Stockport County in the 3rd Qualifying round of the FA Trophy. The two Cheshire clubs play at Edgeley Park on Saturday November 28 at 3pm. And as we went to press Nantwich sit one point clear at the top of the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier league, although they have played more games than their rivals. Coach Chris Parkes (pictured) was delighted with

the Dabbers’ performance in the Trophy fixture. He said: “We are clinical on the counter attack and we have pace throughout the side. “If you look wide we have Steve Jones and Lewis Short, both have impressive pace. “We have rocks at the back in Jon Moran, who has become excellent in the last few games, and of course Mat Bailey. “Mat does very well for us, he has won every single one of his headers and he organises the team very well, with his experience. “So all round it was a very pleasing performance throughout, in fact no one has had a mediocre game, which is excellent news for the coaching staff.”

“We have got good strength in depth and I’m glad I’m not the gaffer leaving some of the players out!”
