Flavour of the monthNANTWICH Food and Drink Festival organisers have cooked up a few surprises for visitors to this

year’s festival. They are beefing up the range of foods the festival has to offer with several unusual varieties of meat including buffalo, ostrich, kangaroo, reindeer, wild boar and zebra. More than 100 food producers have already signed up for the event which will fill Nantwich town centre with mouth-watering sights and aromas over the weekend September 14-16. New this year is a giant marquee on the town square, offering chef demonstrations, as well as a marquee housing food stalls and an alfresco dining area on the Bowling Green car-park behind St Mary’s Church. Nantwich Civic Hall will be a foodie magnet with the

Mornflake-sponsored Gourmet Food Hall. Gastronomic delights will include cheeses, honey, jams and pickles as well as international delicacies including Italian olives, French pastries, German salamis and Indian curries. Home-grown Cheshire foods will be very much in evidence with cheeses, wines and fresh produce in abundance. But the festival will also have a foreign flavour with exhibitors specialising in Caribbean, Spanish, Thai, Chinese, Indian and Italian foods. Roger Mills, of the festival

directors, said: “We are very encouraged by the response of food traders. The festival will once again attract some of the country’s leading purveyors of fine food and drink to our town and give local people an opportunity to try some very different and special foods.” The festival will also offer a feast of entertainment with music and artists, buskers and drama presentations. Mr Mills added: “Everything is shaping up into a fabulous festival. We are grateful to our sponsors, without whom the festival would not be possible.”

THRONGED: Last year’s festival attracted 30,000 people

ORGANISERS of the Nantwich Show have pledged to bring back the event bigger and better than ever in 2013. Weeks of torrential rain forced this year’s event to be cancelled – leaving the International Cheese Awards to fly the flag. Huge crowds turned out to see cooking demonstrations by James Martin, Gino D’Acampo and Jean Christophe Novelli with ex-Atomic Kitten member Liz McClarnon also in attendance. “The awards needed to fly the flag and make sure the event stayed on the map and comes back even better next year,” explained ICA chairman Richard Paul. Records were once again broken as over 3,927 entries from all over the world battled it out for Supreme Champion status on Trade Day – won by a German Montagnolo Affine produced by Kaserei Champignon and imported by Elite Imports Ltd.

“I’m thrilled, I feel like I’ve just won gold at the Olympics,” said Mick Acuta of Elite Imports Ltd. “I just want to complement and thank the cheese maker Kaserei Champignon for the quality of this cheese.” A panel of expert judges from the dairy industry named a Wookey Hole Cave Aged

Cheddar produced by Ashley Chase Estate Ltd as the Nantwich Reserve Supreme Champion whilst Belton Cheese Ltd won the National Westminster trophy for the highest number of golds. With a store set to open in Nantwich in 2013, Marks & Spencer won the Supreme Retailer Award.

NANTWICH Players start their new season with the hit comedy Calendar Girls on September 1. The play is written by Tim Firth and based on the motion picture by Tim and Juliette Towhidi. Those who have seen the film will recognise the story of the WI members who decide to make a saucy calendar to raise funds for their hospital. And yes, the “Girls” will strip off - but all in best possible taste, of course. Director, Jeremy Acklam

said: “This is a very funny play, but there is a touching side to it too. “I’m confident the actors will bring out the broad laughs, and possibly some tears too. “It’s quite a challenge on our small stage and we have lots of props to accommodate, but we’re getting into the spirit of a real WI group and seeing problems as opportunities!” Pictured are Judy Naden, Jo Pennell, Helen Gresty, Tony Hoy, Michaela Warrilow, Margaret Boschi and Avril Allman.

LOCAL politicians have given their backing to Nantwich dairy farmers in their fight to get a fair price. MP Edward Timpson and council leader Michael Jones, from Nantwich, pledged their support following a national row over milk prices. Cllr Jones has written to minister Jim Paice to express Cheshire East Council’s ‘serious concern’ at dairy farmers’ plight. The letter says: “By early August a significant number of our farmers will have seen the price they receive for milk reduce by 15 per cent over recent months, leading to severe economic hardship and, in some cases, decisions to go out of milk production altogether, losing a heritage which goes back many generations. “The impact on the wider rural economy could be

devastating. “No business can continue to produce a product if the price that they receive for it is consistently lower than the cost of production.” He urged the Government to support fair milk contracts that stop milk buyers from exploiting dairy farmers and to lighten the load of farm regulation. Unhappy dairy farmers blockaded Joseph Heler Cheese’s Laurels Farm at Hatherton and a premises in Aston as part of widespread protests last month. Nantwich MP Edward Timpson said: “The dairy industry is a key part of the local economy. It is important that farmers are able to achieve a fair price for their milk and that purchasers are able to take their final product to market whilst maintaining affordability.”

TALENTED Nantwich youngsters have strutted their stuff in a special dance celebration. The town’s Chrysalis Dance Group and the Nantwich Freerunners took part in a Cultural Olympiad dance project called ‘The Moment When…’ at Tatton Park. The event was inspired by the return of the Olympic Games to the UK. The Chrysalis Dance Group, based at the Guy Harvey Youth Centre on Birchin Lane, were involved at various

stages of the project. The Freerunners performed moves including palm spins, dive rolls, flips, stalls, and quadrupedal movements as visitors arrived along a woodland entrance path. The group’s Joel Howells said: “I was worried that the landscape would overshadow the performance, but instead it enhanced it greatly and with the music and movement mixing in made it a moment to remember.” Pic courtesy of Jonathan White.

A COMMUNITY project has been launched in Nantwich to provide people with more information about the riverside area. Seven large information panels are being installed along the length of the riverside from Beam Bridge to the south of Nantwich Lake. The panels, produced by the Sign Studio in Crewe, are double-sided with the front face providing information about landscape, wildlife and history and the other side showing walking and cycling routes. The first in the series was installed last week by volunteers at Coed Wen Community Woodland. It was then unveiled by Nantwich Town Council leader John Lewis and chairman of Nantwich in Bloom Doug Butterill.

Pupils from Weaver Primary School have also been helping to develop the woodland by planting native trees, shrubs and wild flower meadows. Jeff Stubbs, chairman of Nantwich Civic Society, said: “This has been an excellent example of local partnership working backed by Nantwich Town Council. “I would like to thank all the organisations and individuals who have contributed towards the project and Greenspaces South Cheshire for bringing it all together.” Jeff added: “We are really very fortunate to have such an interesting area of public open space by the River Weaver and I am pleased we have been able to reveal some of its treasures for all to enjoy.” The remaining six panels will be installed over the coming weeks.

THE Dabber has joined forces with a number of local businesses to support the All Star Charity Football team. Local MP Edward Timpson has also been signed up to play for the team as they look to add to the near £300,000 they have already raised for local charities. The Dabber editor Toby Robinson said: “Barry and the team do a tremendous job and we are more than happy to support them. “Sponsoring the shirt is a small gesture towards making such a worthy idea a success.”

Team founder Barry Donegan (pictured above with Toby) is looking foward to the next game when they take on the cast of Hollyoaks at 2pm on Sunday September 16 at Nantwich Town FC. He said: “Club chairman Jon Gold, manager Jimmy Quinn and Andy Shenton have all been very supportive to the team allowing us to use the facilities as our home ground to play the charity games and host charity events in the function rooms.” Tickets are available from the club.

Opinions split over plansNANTWICH MP Edward Timpson has given his support to campaigners against plans to build a new village in Stapeley. Mr Timpson visited the area to help launch a petition alongside ward councillors Andrew Martin and Peter Groves, and crowds of protesters. Cheshire based Muller Property Group held a second consultation on its plans for new housing on land off Peter Destapleigh Way on July 9, following changes made after the first round of consultations in February this year. The revised plans now include a site for a new primary school, forming part of a new ‘village centre’ along with other facilities for local people. A company spokesman told The Dabber: “Muller is committed to ensuring its Nantwich South development is a sustainable, lively and vibrant place to live;

because of this more play areas, sports, communal and recreational areas have been added. Along with these enhancements, the updated plans now also include an increased provision of landscaping and green spaces, with trees and planting a significant feature. “On top of this, the size of the allotment site has been increased and will be available for all of Nantwich residents to apply for and use.” Chief executive Colin Muller added: “We have listened to lots of different views and gathered a lot of feedback since we launched our proposals in February. “As interested parties and residents will be able to see from our updated plans, we have taken their comments and feedback into account and evolved our plans for Nantwich South so that we can provide the best scheme for the town and offer as many benefits to the town as

possible.” Mr Timpson MP said he hoped the campaign would gather enough momentum to have an impact when formal bids are discussed by planners in the coming months. He added: “We’re making a statement about the groundswell of objection there is in the Stapeley community. “The level of objection is a highly important factor.

“If you have hundreds, if not thousands, of local residents making the effort to object to this application it would be absurd if that was simply ignored as part of the decision-making process. “Muller has already refined its plans so clearly the campaign has already had an impact, but many of the original concerns still remain.”

NANTWICH ice cream company Snugburys have unveiled their annual straw sculpture - in this case a fitting tribute to Tour de France winning cyclist Bradley Wiggins. A Snugburys spokesman explained: “To say we are absolutely ecstatic with this year’s straw feature is an understatement!

“The full cycling sculpture weighs in at an impressive seven tons and is around 35 foot high. “This year we decided it would be fitting to support a group of local amateur cyclists who are raising money for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) and local hospices, Douglas Macmillan and St Luke’s.

A NANTWICH primary school is celebrating an impressive turnaround after receiving praise from inspectors. Millfields Primary School and Nursery had a disappointing Ofsted report four years ago but has now been recognised as a ‘good school’. An inspection at the Marsh Lane school took place at the end of June with the report praising “excellent leadership from the headteacher, deputy headteacher and senior leadership team has greatly improved the school’s performance.” The report also stated: “All pupils now make good progress throughout the school. Parents and carers are rightly positive about the standard of behaviour and that their children are safe in

school. “Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs make the same good progress as their classmates. “Attainment at the end of reception year has improved steeply for two years running above average. Head teacher Andrew Ross paid tribute to staff and pupils. “When I started at the school we were at a low point which I think parents, children and staff felt around school,” he said. “This has now been eradicated through hard work and support from everyone involved in with school. “Our plan for future years is to maintain the excellent practise within school and continue on our journey to outstanding.”

It’s all good for MillfieldsPraise from Ofsted inspectors

ONE of UK’s rising stars of jazz pop, Tom Seals makes his return to The Crown Hotel on Thursday, August 16. Influenced by the likes of Jamie Cullum, Jools Holland and Michael Buble, the 19-year-old virtuoso pianist has made a huge impression in Nantwich after a multitude of sets at the town’s Jazz, Blues and Music Festival. Tom has already supported the likes of Cleo Laine, Tony Christie, Billy Ocean, Jason Donavan and Ben Montague and has recently worked with mutli-platinum selling soul star Kenny Thomas whilst studying at Paul McCartney’s world famous and prestigious LIPA. His singing, playing and sense of fun has won over pretty much every crowd you could think of – from a bunch of rowdy relegation-threatened football fans to the most retiring of gentry.

Other artists to appear at The Crown in August include acoustic legend Jai performing both old and new classics on the 9th. NANTWICH Players have lifted the lid on a diverse new season of plays starting in September. Kicking off is the acclaimed hit Calendar Girls. The play has just been released for amateur performances and the Players will offer a premiere amateur production in the area when they commence their run on September 1. It starts the season a little earlier than usual, with a few extra performance dates - look out for the new yellow leaflets with exact details. Then follows the comedy Art, which has a cast of only three men and contains some strong language. The festive season will see a Christmas-themed play by Alan Ayckbourn, Life and Beth. Director John Powell said: “Ayckbourn plays are always popular as they are funny but also very moving – this is no exception.” In February there will be the drama Thérèse Raquin based on the book by Emile Zola. This is a tense play with a real

twist at the end. In March, the award-winning Youth Theatre will present their latest offering – yet to be decided. Those who enjoy the visual spectacle of a costume drama, can look forward to The Forsyte Saga in May. Those who remember the TV series will marvel at how this is adapted for the stage. Lots of characters will enact this dramatic tale. Later in the same month, The Players will launch a festival of four nights to celebrate their 30 years at the Love Lane site. Details will be announced at a later date. Rounding off the season in July is a real laugh-a-minute play as the Farndale Avenue women again try and stage a play; this time a Murder Mystery. Patrons who have seen plays from this author before will know that this will be an evening of guaranteed mayhem. For details pick up a leaflet from the library or Civic Hall, or visit www.nantwichplayers.com.

NANTWICH’S Reaseheath College has notched up another record year of student enrolments and achievements. The annual awards ceremony celebrated the success of 1,120 graduating Further Education students who achieved industry recognised qualifications and skills. Principal Meredydd David said that a recent survey

had shown that 93% of Reaseheath’s students progress into employment or onto higher level courses. He said that Reaseheath was continuing to invest in the futures of young people by setting aside funds to provide financial assistance to those who were less well off. He also outlined the college’s continuing investment in

specialist facilities, which this year saw the opening of over £3m worth of new build including a dining and social area, an adventure sports centre and the John Platt Centre for Agriculture. A further £7m investment is planned for further halls of residence and sporting facilities including a fitness centre and floodlit pitch.

Dear Sirs, Here at Richmond Village Nantwich, we would all like to thank Olywn Payton from Sainsburys in Nantwich, who continues to bring the beautiful donated flowers for our reception and care home. We never know what we are going to receive from the local Sainsburys store until we see Olwyn struggling down towards reception with huge buckets full! Lilles, roses and freesias bring beautiful fragrance to our surroundings, whilst the brightly coloured chrysanthemums and carnations add that splash of colour to brighten up the

dreariest day! Not only does Sainsburys donate flowers however, they have also provided the amazing hampers that have been raffled off recently in aid of charity, including those for the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and our recent Summer Fayre raffles. Sainsburys have also kindly agreed to provide all the tea and coffee for Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning which will be held at Richmond Village at the end of September. To Olwyn and Sainsburys in Nantwich – THANK YOU! - Nicola Tooke, Richmond Village

After reading your story ‘The Fun Is Over’, I am writing to express my total disappointment at the cancellation of Nantwich Family Fun Day.

It is a sorry state of affairs when the residents of this town are no longer able to enjoy what had become a fantastic event. I know Mr Cafferty and the organisers had worked tirelessly over the past few years and all for nothing due to the ridiculous bureaucracy

emanating from the doors of Cheshire East. So much for the so-called Big Society, this is why community spirit is becoming a thing of the past. Events and traditions up and down the country will vanish. - George Armitage, Nantwich

So much for the ‘big society’

Show businessI was really disappointed to hear that the Nantwich Show had been cancelled because of the sodden English summer. It’s a shame that otherwise successful events are at the mercy of the elements. Maybe we need our own Olympic stadium to stage the show in future. - Owen Heath, Audlem

THE Nantwich Big Cheese Film Club’s new season continues with a screening of romantic comedy Midnight in Paris on Tuesday, August 14. Written and directed by Woody Allen, the film is about a young man’s great love for Paris and the illusion people have that a different life

would be much better. This will be the club’s second event after a relaunch at the Civic Hall, last month. “We wanted the showing to stay in the town centre and the facilities at The Civic are great to attract new and returning members to our films,” said a spokesperson.

“The club has recently bought new equipment with grants from the Town Council and from Cheshire East. “Together with the Civic Hall’s cinema screen and audio system, the quality of the Big Screen experience is better than ever.”Doors open at 7pm .

Back on the big screen NANTWICH can now boast its own ink and laser cartridge specialist. AK Ink & Laser, which opened recently in Hospital Street, offers business and the public a cheaper alternative without loss of quality or reliability. A company spokesperson said: “Today people both at home and in business use such a variety of different printers and with the cost getting more and more expensive, the need for compatible, high quality reliable cartridges that can be bought locally in the town was needed. “People do not want to have to drive all the way to Crewe when their printer runs out of ink just to get their cartridge refilled or replaced. “Local business in the town such as Aroma, Brookshaws, The Cook shop, The Book Store, M&Co, Moody’s, Costa Coffee, Brooker Property Management, are just a few that make use of our facilities along with many others in and around the town.”

NANTWICH sports scientist Yana Radcliffe is preparing to impress on the global stage, after gaining a placement with Team GB at this year’s Olympics A lifelong sports fanatic, 21-year-old Yana will be at the heart of the action this summer, having earned herself a place with Team GB’s Performance Analysis Capture Service Team. Yana, who is a student at Chester University, explained: “It’s such an incredible opportunity and though I have worked really hard towards this, I still can’t believe it – it will be amazing.” The black belt kick boxer, who is currently finishing her exams, will be based in Team GB headquarters. She will be capturing footage from the Taekwondo, wrestling, boxing, fencing, archery and weight lifting competitions to be scrutinised by Team GB coaches to give the national side a sporting advantage.

Yana’s connection to Team GB began back in October when she was put forward by one of her lecturers for a placement offered by the English Institute of Sport that saw her working with the Taekwondo team’s performance analysts. The former Malbank School and Sixth Form College student, said: “The project’s aim was to look at the effect of the 2009 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) rule

changes upon the techniques used in elite competitions to make final tactical decisions prior to London 2012.” Her findings were presented to analysts to create an appropriate intervention for the team’s training. Yana added: “Only a couple of months into this training the team become more proficient with its multiple point scoring, which resulted in competition success – which is reassuring for London!”

Prolific Bangor City striker Kyle Wilson, Crewe Academy midfielder Casper Hughes and former Colwyn Bay Fraser McLachlan have joined Lewis Short and Mark Beesley at the Weaver Stadium. “Kyle will get goals and that’s what we’ve brought him in for,” added Quinn. “Casper has signed and we’re delighted with that. “We’ll try and help him push on towards a return to the Football League. “Fraser signing is a huge plus. “He has bags of experience and showed what he could do here while on loan last season.”

NANTWICH Town boss Jimmy Quinn has quashed any talk of a promotion push ahead of the big kick-off on August 18. Optimism has been high among Dabbers fans after a relatively successful season and some impressive summer

signings. But Quinn insists he will not get drawn into any meaningless speculation as the club launch their Evo-Stick NPL Premier Division campaign at Matlock. “I’m not an idiot,” he explained.

“If you start talking like that, it can get you into a lot of trouble.” “Last year we finished ninth so let’s see if we can finish higher than that first. “If we can get into the play-offs, anything can happen but improvement is the

initial target. “Last year we got off to a poor start and after Christmas we had a spell where we drew too many games but we also picked up some great results overall. “We’ve got a good bunch (cont. on page 15)
