NANTWICH Family Films @ 4 has received a commendation at the National Film Society awards. The group was launched in January and shows films on the third Sunday of every month at 4pm. Co-ordinator Geoff Etherton said: “I am delighted that

we have been commended in the Best New Film Society category. “To achieve this award is national recognition for the local difference we have been able to make, and is due to the hard work and dedication of an enthusiastic and willing team of volunteers.”

THE seventh Nantwich Words and Music Festival proved a hit with the public once again this month. This year’s event featured headline acts including Badly Drawn Boy, Thea Gilmore and

Ian McCulloch. The festival also offered the chance to shine for local performers and groups, including Nantwich Young Voices. (pic courtesy of Paul Compton)

A DISILLUSIONED Conservative councillor in Nantwich has joined UKIP. Cllr Harold Cooper, who has been on the the town council since 2011, has decided to change allegiance because he is unhappy with the Tory Party. He explained: “I don’t like their total contempt for the ordinary man in the street. “I am just fed up with it. “Since I have been on the council I have discovered that in reality the town councillors are treated like parish councillors. “The power is held by Cheshire East Council and if we ring them there is no proper channel of contact. “The town councillors do a good job but whenever

we make a decision it is immediately taken out of our hands. “I have decided to join UKIP because their policies resonate with me, particularly moving

power back to grass roots level,” he said. The father-of-two, who is about to become a racing driver instructor, said he had not intended standing for re-election but has now decided to do so. Local UKIP MEP

Louise Bours said: “This is the second former Conservative councillor in Cheshire to cross the floor to UKIP in as many weeks.“They are haemorrhaging support to us all over the country and this is just another example.”

NANTWICH Rotary Club president Tony Coxhill made a presentation to local retailer Steve Lawson earlier this month. Steve, who runs Nantwich Bookshop with his wife Denise, donates the use of the shop’s upstairs room as a Santa’s grotto to aid the club’s festive fundraising efforts. Nantwich Rotary club presented Steve with life-long Honorary Membership.

A NEW military exhibition has taken pride of place at a Nantwich supermarket. Former Lance Corporal Malcolm Vickers presented his Honouring Our Veterans at Morrison’s supermarket earlier this month. The unique veterans’ exhibition featured military items, historic photos, a

comprehensive medal display and extensive reference material. Next year the exhibition will be touring across the region raising awareness and paying homage to past and present veterans. Pictured at the exhibition are youngsters Freddie Woodward and Eleanor Davies.

A NANTWICH man has been arrested in a dawn raid on suspected drug dealers in the town. Cash and a quantity of drugs were recovered from an address in the town on October 10. One man was arrested and questioned. Police later bailed him pending further enquiries. A spokesman for Nantwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit said: “The arrest came directly as a result of the public talking to us about their concerns.”

NATURE comes under the spotlight in the next workshops at Nantwich Museum over the half term holidays. The drop-in workshops take place from 11am until 3pm on Wednesday October 29 and Thursday October 30. The cost is £2 per child who must be accompanied. Large groups are requested to book in advance. Half term funA 26-YEAR-old man has been arrested and released on police bail following a serious assault in Nantwich on Saturday October 4. The assault is believed to have occurred at around 2.40am outside a takeaway in the Swine Market area. The victim, a 21-year-old man from Whitchurch, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Detective Constable Lyndsey Burton said: ”At this point enquiries into the incident are still on-going and we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident.” Anyone with information should call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 134 of 4/10/2014.

RESURFACING work on the A500 has produced an unexpected spin off for a local Scout camp. More than 300 tonnes of planings, the top surface removed from the worn-out road, were recycled to improve the South West Cheshire District Scouts campsite at Milldale, Blakenhall. The Scouts had asked for the planings for a new car park, but contractor Ringway Jacobs and surfacing firm Eurovia offered to lay a 350 metre track through the campsite free of charge. The Milldale campsite is used by all Beaver, Cubs and Scout groups across South Cheshire. Rob Cave, of the Scout Association said: “We were only expecting a stockpile of planings that we could use for our car park but when

Ringway Jacobs offered to surface the track we were delighted. “This is great for the youngsters and organisers as the track through the site was in a very poor condition with muddy pools to walk through. “We would like to thank Cheshire East Highways for this generous donation.”

Wybunbury Councillor Janet Clowes said: “I know this site very well having had three sons attend Beavers and Cubs; I have even camped here myself, helping to prepare enough food for upwards of 60 hungry cub scouts.”

LOCAL families got to the core of fruit growing at Reaseheath College’s popular apple festival earlier this month. The fruity festival, held at the Nantwich college as part of a national celebration of the English apple, featured 100 rare varieties of apples and pears, some dating back to Roman times and some of more recent origin. Horticultural experts were on hand to identify apple varieties, answer queries on the production of apples and other fruits and suggest answers to problems such as the control of pests and diseases.

Many visitors arrived with fruit and foliage for identification or brought in their own apples for juicing. Varieties such as Millicent Barnes, which was raised in Chester in 1903, and Bee Bench, which is local to the Nantwich area, were among rare varieties brought in by families. The festival, being held for the 23rd consecutive year, was aimed at encouraging gardeners to preserve old varieties of apples and soft fruit by growing them in their own gardens. Pictured are Alfie Deabill, dad Simon Deabill and juicer Jimmy Holland.

Crunch time at collegeNANTWICH’S Sainsbury’s store has donated all the proceeds of its cheese sales form its stall at the Nantwich Show to the Wingate Centre. A cheque for the £1,600 raised was presented to the supermarket’s charity of the year earlier this month. The impressive amount was down to the hard work of two of the store’s employees who work on the cheese counter, Dominic Walker and Wendy Gibson. They spent the whole day preparing and selling the blocks of cheese to sell at £1. Rona Moloney, of the Wingate Centre, said: “We really appreciate how hard Dominic and Wendy worked to raise so much money for the Wingate Centre at the Nantwich Show.”

NANTWICH FC continued their mixed form in October, now sitting mid-table in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League. Dabbers boss Danny Johnson admitted he was ‘gutted’ following the side’s 2-1 home defeat to FC United. He said: “It’s what this

league does to you. “It’s a really horrible tough league and it can knock you back. “It can kick you in the guts and it will knock you back to where you were. “The lads in the changing room were gutted and really disappointed.

“Shaun Dowling, he has got his head in hands and he is absolutely gutted.” The Dabbers had gone ahead through Aaron Burns, but two goals from subs Tom Greaves and Tom Brown in the last 15 minutes of the game gave FC United all three points.

Man of the match Dowling added: “I am disappointed, the lads have all worked hard. “But a mistake from me has cost us the game.” Dowling was a seventh minute sub, coming on for Adam Jones who had to go off injured.
