THE 10th Midnight Walk in aid of St Luke’s Hospice proved a huge hit once again. The event boasted some 1,200 walkers and 200 hard working volunteers. The ladies left Reaseheath College passing ladders of memory candles, providing a reflective moment for those walking in memory of loved ones. Participants chose between a testing 6.5 miles or a gruelling 13.1 miles. They were rewarded with refreshments at the MMU campus in Crewe before being turned around to do it all again on their return to Reaseheath.

Hundreds of people, many in their night clothes, came out of their homes to encourage the walkers. The walkers crossed the finishing line to a well-deserved medal, a cooked breakfast and the knowledge that between them they had pledged over £145,000 to the hospice. Jane Thompson, of St Luke’s, said “With monies already raised and the addition of gift aid, local hospice care should benefit by over £175,000.”

FOUR men have been jailed after they filmed a dog brutally mauling a fox to death in Nantwich. The gang watched the dog carry out the attack while they claimed they were out ‘rabbiting’ The case came to light after they were spotted acting suspiciously near an active badger sett on land near to Brookfield Golf Course in February 2013. Police were called and when officers searched the vehicle they found six dogs – some of which had serious injuries, and hunting paraphernalia. The men said that their dogs had attacked a fox accidently while they were out catching rabbits and showed the police the fox’s body. The police arrested the men and contacted the RSPCA.

Reece Welsh, Ryan Kennedy and John Daly, all from Liverpool, and Daniel Ratchford of Standish, were sentenced at South Cheshire Magistrates Court. Daly was jailed for 22 weeks, Welsh for 16 weeks, and Ratchford and Kennedy for 12 weeks, all for animal cruelty. They were all banned from keeping dogs for life. RSPCA inspector Anthony Joynes said: “These men had set out for a day’s killing spree. “Their van was stocked up with all the equipment they needed for a day’s killing, the hunting paraphernalia found included shovels, locator collars on the dogs, and of course the dogs. “They were out for a day of hunting and would kill whatever they could find.”

THE Crewe and the Nantwich & District Branches of The Royal British Legion will be setting off from Barony Park on a special sponsored walk next month. They are inviting people to join them on the King’s Shilling Walk, launched to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One. Members of both branches met last month to officially launch the event. They were joined by members of the Crewe Army Cadets and representatives from Bae Systems, who are manufacturing and donating the commemorative ‘King’s Shilling’ which will be awarded to all those who

finish the walk. The day on August 3 will begin at 10am with the walk from the Barony Park along the Sustrans route to finish at Queens Park in Crewe. There will then be a picnic, stalls and activities, with music by the Co-Op Funeral Band, South Cheshire Pipe Band and the Police Corps of Drums. A service of commemoration will take place at 2pm at the Boer War Memorial when people will be encouraged to plant a cross or a poppy. There will be a free shuttle bus back to the Barony Park. PUPILS at Millfields Primary and Nursery celebrated the school’s 50th birthday with a party that crossed the generations. Former teachers Connie Jones (78) and Angela Lloyd (83) joined the youngest pupils four-year olds Tia Smith and Isaac Knight in cutting the birthday cake. And the choir and school band performed a medley of songs from the 60s to an audience of former pupils, staff and teachers to mark the 50th birthday. The school, on Marsh Lane, first opened in January 1964

but the official opening took place later that year. Acting deputy head, Samantha Williams, who organised the day-long celebration, had put out an appeal for former teachers, pupils and support staff to get in touch to help them celebrate the half-century. She said: “We’re thrilled by the number of people who came along to help us celebrate including former catering staff, school crossing patrols, teachers, pupils, admin staff and also friends and family of people who worked here.”

(cont. from front)to import cannabis. A Dutch national, he was the co-owner of Baan Flower Trading. His primary role was to travel to Amsterdam and attend the flower auctions but also visited a separate industrial unit where he would supervise and assist in loading boxes of cannabis. He would also liaise with those supplying the drugs. Klootwijk would then return to the UK by air, separately to the consignment. Barrie North, aged 71 of Audlem Road, Woore, was sentenced to two years imprisonment. He worked as a courier and used hired vans to travel to the likes of the south of England, Liverpool, and Manchester, to deliver drugs to local dealers. All of these rentals and journeys would tie in with the return of the refrigerated lorry from the Netherlands.

A NANTWICH councillor is calling for urgent action so that buses do not have to by-pass a village centre because of irresponsible parking. Willaston councillor Brian Silvester said: “This is happening far too often and it must be stopped. “One evening a constituent, who is awaitng a new knee, had to walk all the way from Crewe Road to the centre of the village because the bus could not get through. “I am asking the police to take immediate action against the irresponsible parkers. “I am also calling on Cheshire East Council to speed up the parking survey for the village, for which I have been pressing for a long time. No further delay is acceptable. “We need to seek realistic solutions to the ongoing parking problems in the village and then to implement them. “It is not acceptable for the bus service to be curtailed in this way.”

GOLFERS have pitched in to help raise cash for a Nantwich school football team. Crewe Golf Club Ladies have been fundraising over the year by running golf events, raffles and coffee mornings to help support sport activities in their local community. The money they raised was divided between several local community projects for sports related items and Millfields Primary School in Nantwich were one of those recipients. The money has helped to buy the school team a new kit. Andrea O’Neill, sports co-ordinator, said: “This was something we had dreamed of for our football team but it would have taken us some time to raise the amount. “With this donation we were able to have the team all kitted out and looking smart in time for the last games of the season. Carole, whose children attended Millfields, said “We strongly feel that sport activities are very important to children of all capabilities.”

by Jonathan WhiteTHE 35rd World Worm Charming Championship took place at Willaston Primary School last month. Participants in each of the 144 plots had 30 minutes to collect as many worms as possible. There were ‘traditional’ plots for teams of two and ‘tag-team’ plots for teams who wished to change their pairings throughout the ‘charming period’. Techniques included vibrating a garden fork, singing and playing a musical instrument. The Chief Wormer’s trophy for youngest wormer with 64 worms was won by 29 day old Arwyn Davies. Most Promising Newcomer Award with 184 worms went to Lucas

and Melvyn Mostran. The Heaviest Worm trophy was won by Liam and Patrick Martin with a whopping 5.84g. The trophy for Most Worms, with an impressive 394 worms, was won by the Bowden family with dad Andy, son Dale and nine-year-old Georgia (pictured). The event included representatives from Australia (259 worms), the Philippines (81), Holland (202), Switzerland (114) and India (84). Other activities included a performance by the Willaston School Percussion Band, Willaston Scouts Ninja Poi Display Team, dancing by the X Academy of Performing Arts, and singing by TheFunkyChoir.com.

Almost a hundred people enjoyed the summer sunshine at a recent garden party held in support of Nantwich Museum. They were guests of Deana and Gerald Emerton, who made available their house and garden in Acton. An afternoon tea of sandwiches, cakes and tea was prepared and served by the ladies of the Nantwich Inner Wheel led by Mrs Emerton. Nick Dyer, chair of the board of trustees of the museum, thanked Nantwich Mayor Christine Farrall for attending, all those who had helped and contributed and Gerald and Deana for their generous hospitality. The event raised more than £1,000 for museum funds.

NANTWICH Town boss Danny Johnson has hailed the capture of former Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Phillips. The Dabbers chief said: “Steve needs no introduction to the people of Nantwich and Crewe “He has made around 600 football league appearances and has become a legend at Crewe Alexandra since joining them in 2010. “He has appeared in two Wembley finals in the last couple of years and is now a coach at Liverpool Football Club. “Joining Nantwich Town and giving something back to the local community was a driving force in Steve’s decision to join us. “I am really looking forward to working with someone of Steve’s experience and ability. “Steve is another part of

the jigsaw and along with the signing of Steve Jones will provide us with plenty of know how and help to bring success back to Nantwich Town Football Club. “The club is fully aware of the excellent work Steve does for his charities and we will be looking to support him in any way we possibly can. “We are working hard behind the scenes to develop community cohesion as the club has always been based around local people.” Touching the inssue of further new recruits, Danny added: “I have been in talks with a central midfield player that I have admired for a number of years. “Last season we lacked creativity and goals which is something I have looked to address. “This particular player in my opinion should be

playing higher up the non league pyramid and should we finalise a deal he will certainly bring creativity and a few goals. “I am also looking to bring in a target man and a young centre forward who will both add great dimensions to the squad.

“Steve Smithies and I have also identified 3 or 4 local young players who we will be working with us throughout pre season. “I am very hopeful that these young players will follow in the foot steps of Peter Green and make an impact this season.”

IN SAFE HANDSDabbers welcome former Alex keeper Steve between the sticks
