CHESHIRE East is set for a massive increase in jobs and homes over the next 15 years, according to a series of reports. Council leaders say new evidence gathered during the suspension of the examination of the Local Plan shows that the borough’s economy is likely to grow much more quickly than expected. They insist that the increase in new homes – needed to provide for rising numbers of aspirational working families – will be achieved without any

major impact on the green belt. Economic development consultants have projected an average growth rate of 0.7 per cent per year between now and 2030. As a result, the council has to make plans to accommodate an estimated 31,410 new jobs, likely to be created in Cheshire East by 2030. The initial version of the Local Plan envisaged net jobs growth of 13,900. This growth would create a need for 36,000 new homes by

2030 – 7,000 more than were identified in the submitted version of the Local Plan. Council leader Michael Jones, of Nantwich, said: “When we began work on the Local Plan in 2009, we were in the midst of a deep recession, during which the UK’s GDP fell by 7.2 per cent. “In 2012, the sun started shining again and Cheshire

AN evening of Midsummer Music comes to the Civic Hall in Nantwich this month. The performance on Sunday June 21 will feature the Nantwich Concert Band and the Rode Hall Silver Band. The new musical director of the Nantwich Concert Band is Nick Birch. Nick (pictured) is a euphonium player with Fairey Brass, recent winners of the

North West Regional Finals for the second year running. He conducts his first formal concert with the Nantwich band, in a joint performance with the Rode Hall Silver Band. The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 adults and £5 concessions.

work, to be submitted to the Inspector by the end of July in line with the agreed timetable. It is anticipated that initial examination hearings will then resume in the early autumn.

POLICE have carried out raids on homes in Nantwich and Crewe as part of an ongoing investigation into human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Raids were carried out at properties in Nantwich, Crewe, London, Bristol, Stoke, and Preston. A 49-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with the investigation and are currently helping police with their enquiries. They were arrested at properties in Nantwich and Crewe. A number of women were found inside the properties and are believed to have been brought to the UK from

Eastern Europe. They have been removed from the properties and are being spoken to by specially trained officers. The operation, led by Cheshire Police, involved a number of agencies and forces across the UK including The Met and the National Crime Agency. More than a hundred officers were involved in the ‘strike phase’. Specialist officers were used to gain entry to the properties and detectives carried out detailed searches. Detective Inspector David Browne from Cheshire Police, who has led on the operation, said: “Human trafficking and sexual exploitation stems from organised crime and targets

some of the most vulnerable people in our society. “The action taken today shows the combined efforts of a number of agencies in tackling this issue. “The strike phase this morning is the result of months of hard work by a dedicated team of officers from Cheshire Police. “During the investigation, intelligence and evidence has been gathered enabling detectives to piece together their case. “Our enquiries are very much ongoing at this stage and we will continue to work with colleagues in other agencies to ensure that anyone suspected of being involved in this type of crime is dealt with.”

A CRACKDOWN by Cheshire East Council has led to the prosecution of three benefits cheats who fraudulently claimed more than £30,000 of taxpayers’ money. All three offenders have been sentenced by magistrates and will now have to repay the illegally-obtained benefits in full. Tracy Wrench, of Blagg Avenue, Nantwich, admitted fraudulently obtaining £7,067 in housing benefit, Council Tax benefit and Council Tax support by failing to declare she had savings totalling £16,000. Wrench, 42, was sentenced to a 12-month community order with a requirement to do 130 hours’ unpaid work. She was also ordered to pay £395 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge. The two other separate cases involved offenders from Crewe and Wilmslow. Cheshire East Council has taken steps to ensure that the overpaid benefits are repaid in full.

NANTWICH Town Council will receive some good news this month when the latest accounts for the year ending March 31 2015 are presented. The draft accounts indicate that the operating cost of the Civic Hall has fallen in 2014/15 to £89,800. In the previous financial year, 2013/14, the cost was £121,000. A spokesman said: “Since the transfer of the Civic Hall from Cheshire East in May 2012, the council has introduced

more efficient working practices and is looking to make operating savings year on year whilst not increasing hall hire prices. “This is in addition to making substantial improvements to the hall to make the venue more attractive. “Earlier this year the long overdue refurbishment of the toilets was completed and staff carried out a range of repairs and decorations to improve the appearance of the main hall.”

REASEHEATH’S florists are celebrating after taking a top prize at RHS Chelsea, the world’s most prestigious flower show. Anna Eite, Zoe Sillito, Emily Wiseman and Fiona Davies were crowned runners-up in the RHS Chelsea Floristry College of the Year competition last week. The students, who were accompanied by head of floristry Sue Poole, were also awarded a silver medal for their impressive stand. Anna, Zoe and Emily have completed diplomas in Floristry and are continuing their studies at Reaseheath while Fiona is studying

for her Master Diploma in Professional Floristry. The team created a spectacular display for an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme featuring a giant table, teapot, cake and chair, set off by an eight foot high mushroom made by our engineering department. Sue Poole said: “I am hugely proud of the way the team pulled together to create their display and delighted that the quality of their work was recognised by such highly regarded judges. “The girls did an amazing job considering they were under added pressure to perform to world-class standards.”

THOUSANDS of visitors flocked to Reaseheath College last month to join in the annual Family Festival. The Nantwich campus was packed with families, many of whom had travelled from outside the region to enjoy the hundreds of activities and displays on offer. A giant Tyrannosaurus Rex called Tyrone proved a great hit among young visitors as he roamed the lawns while TV personalities the Fabulous Baker Brothers, Tom and Henry Herbert, drew in the

crowds with their cookery demonstrations. Another highlight was a display of natural horsemanship and daring trick riding by the highly trained Atkinson Action Horses, which performed at the college’s Equestrian Centre. The action packed programme, themed on science and nature, also featured a calf show, sheep shearing, a farmers’ and craft market, student horse riding displays, a fun dog show and displays of classic cars.

NANTWICH Town manager Phil Parkinson’s busy close season has continued with the signing of promising centre midfielder Matt Bell. The 23 year old former Leek and Mansfield man is another strong addition to his squad. Manager Phil Parkinson said “He is another young exciting player who has impressed me greatly, both in terms of his ability and desire to play for the club. “His addition pretty much finalises my midfield preferences at this stage, though we are still working hard to strengthen the squad further and hopefully we will be in a position to make more announcements in the coming days.” Matt joins Jon Moran, Josh Gordon and Sam Hall in arriving at the Weaver Stadium this summer.

Speaking of the signing of highly rated former Leek Town skipper Sam Hall, who helped them to the Division one play off final this year, Phil said: “Sam will bring quality, experience, leadership and goals. “He has an uncanny knack of scoring important goals and we are extremely pleased to have him at the club as he represents everything we are trying to do here.” Unfortunately Ben Harrison has informed the club that following discussions with Telford, he has decided to leave Nantwich and join the Shropshire-based side next season. Parkinson said: “This is obviously disappointing as we made Ben an extremely good offer to stay and continue his development with Nantwich. “But the lure of testing himself at the next level right

now, has obviously appealed and we wish him all the best. “As I have said all along I only want players who are single-minded about playing for Nantwich Town at this time.

“Whilst we are looking to strengthen our options at centre half I am more than pleased with the quality that we have been able to secure elsewhere, especially so early in the close season.”
