Volume 2, Issue 48 First Sunday of Advent

November 29, 2015
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Happy Advent! To put it another way – Happy New Year! This is the first day of the new liturgical year. We begin once more to retell the story of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This story has been told for more than two thousand years. It still has relevance and meaning. We hope that as your church family, we can help you kindle, or rekindle, a spark of God’s loving grace in your hearts. Happy Advent! Blessed Advent! On December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, we will also be announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy that Pope Francis has proclaimed. Deacon Lex has accepted my invitation to lead us on our in-church pilgrimage of mercy and reconciliation. I hope everyone associated with our parish will radiate a spirit of mercy and compassion in all we do. I have great confidence that Deacon Lex will call us to new insight and opportunity to avail ourselves of God’s abundant mercy. One such opportunity will be at our Advent Parish Penance Service to be celebrated jointly at St. Therese’s in Cresskill on December 8 at 7:30 p.m. December 13 will be opening day to the Archdiocesan Capital Campaign, We Are Living Stones. Next weekend I will be speaking at all Masses to recruit volunteers. We need at least fifty volunteers to do the detail work of the Campaign. I ask you to hear this appeal with an open heart. It is not about me – it is not about the bishop – it is about our Catholic faith and the ability to sustain it. Many are already talking about the movie Spotlight. I have not yet seen it, but I certainly intend to see it. The film “spotlights” the terrible sin of abuse of children in our Church and by our Church’s ministers. May God forgive us for this hateful evil in our recent past and may God and diligent honesty and integrity preserve us from it ever happening again. I am quite sure we will be talking a lot more about this in the next few months. Feel free to share with me anything you wish to say about this or any other subject. Let me say again: Happy Advent – Happy New Liturgical Year – Blessed Year of Mercy.
Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
fr. Dan

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Catechesis Promotes Knowledge of the Faith and Teaches the Christian How to Pray
with Christ
“Terror always seeks to separate us from those we most love. Through their suffering, courage and compassion, Parisians are reminding us that the common bond of humanity is strongest when the need is greatest. We pledge our prayers for everyone who suffers from this horrific violence and our advocacy to support all those working to build just and peaceful societies. Our prayers go out to the people of Paris in the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks, particularly the victims and their loved ones. We pray for all people who are victims of terrorism and mass murder and for all the refugees around the world who are fleeing similarly evil acts of brutality and savagery.”

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Jubilee Year of Mercy also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the conclusion of Vatican II.
Let us pray…
Lord Jesus Christ, Throughout your life
you were merciful with people. You made friends with everyone –
rich and poor. You healed the sick, gave sight to the blind,
and fed the hungry. You forgave people who hurt you.
You were patient and kind. You taught people to follow you.
Help us to be merciful in everything that we say and do.
We ask this with the help of Mary, our Mother of Mercy.
Amen.
