But thanks to my daughter, her love of marshmallows, and our need to conduct a project for Blossom Hill’s Science Fair, I learned a lot through this fun and delicious experiment. I know that parents reading this might roll their eyes at the idea of promoting sugar in a child’s diet, but over time as a parent, I have learned to relax a little and allow my daughter’s interests to lead the way (no, she doesn’t get to eat candy everyday!). The important point is to train your children to use their powers of observation, think critically, and to see cause and effect for themselves in a way that they can relate to. In this case, the question posed was: What happens if I change the proportions or the timing of the cooking of the ingredients? How do the changes affect taste and texture? You’ll be able to see the results of this experiment at Family Science Night this Friday between 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) at school, along with a couple hundred of other projects that our kids will have put together. Better still, the science committee hopes that students, wearing their science fair t-shirts, will stand by their boards for at least 20 minutes and answer any questions from curious parents. The science committee is excited, as always, to see what the kids have come up with this year. Just as a reminder, projects were due to be dropped off at the MPR today. Students receive their science fair t-shirts upon project drop off. And, remember: Your children’s exploration of the world around them doesn’t have to stop after the science fair. COME JOIN THE FUN AT FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT!

Until last week, I had no idea just how easy it is to make marshmallows at home, and how mixing different proportions of corn syrup and sugar together changes their consistency.

In addition to all the classes at school, in the wider Bay Area, and online, UCSF’s Bay Area Science Festival maintains a calendar of talks, walks, and other science-related events and exhibitions year-round. On a housekeeping note, please remember that Shir Hadash’s parking lot is not open for parking on Friday night. See you at school!

Fisher Musical Theater Presents

RoaldDahl'sJamesandtheGiantPeach

A new musical for the whole family to enjoy, featuring a wickedly tuneful score by the Tony Award-nominated team of Pasek and Paul and a curiously quirky book by Timothy Allen McDonald. When James is sent by his conniving

aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach... and launches a journey of enormous proportions. A delightfully offbeat adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl adventure,

critics rave: James and the Giant Peach is a "masterpeach!" Performances are March 9th – March 12th. Get your tickets at http://fisherhsc.seatyourself.biz.
