FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Blossom Hill Families,

This month our ABC Readers are exploring When Sophie Gets Angry – Really, Really Angry… by Molly Bang. The goals for the students in the accompanying lesson plan developed by Mr. Bolin and delivered to all K-5 classrooms are:

1. Students will identify their feelings and express them in healthy, safe ways. 2. Students will learn to stop and think when emotions are strong. 3. Students will learn that they have personal power over how they respond to strong

emotions, in themselves and others.

As we all know, it is a critical life skill to manage emotions and behaviors in order to get along with others and handle the ups and downs of everyday life. Below are a few suggestions to help your child recognize their emotions and manage their own behavior.

Encourage Self-control Play games that require your child to think before they act. For instance, try Red Light, Green Light. Name a way for them to cross the room or yard (skip, hop, tiptoe). They will have to resist the urge to move unless you give the “Green Light” and make them stop when you say “Red Light.”

You can also tell your child what you expect before heading into situations that are challenging for them. Maybe they tend to put random items in the grocery cart. Describe what you want them to do instead, such as getting permission before taking groceries off a shelf. Then, let them know you noticed this desired behavior when they do what you asked.

Be A Coach Ask questions or make gentle observations and suggestions when your child is frustrated. Say they are upset because they cannot solve a math problem for homework. You could guide them to acknowledge their frustration and recommend that they take some deep breaths, a break, or temporarily switch to another assignment.

You can also talk about how you deal with your own feelings. You might say, “I’m aggravated about this message from the cable company. I’ll call customer service once I have a chance to calm down.”

By collectively recognizing our emotions and feelings, we can validate their origins and work together to share strategies that help us all to lead a happy and rewarding life.

In education together, Lisa Reynolds, Principal

FAMILY WELLNESS Please join us for monthly discussions with Clinical Psychologist, Michal Ramon, regarding family social-emotional wellness at home and at school. Michal is a practicing clinician and has been involved with Project Cornerstone at Blossom Hill for many years. She brings knowledge regarding how to: model and foster prosocial behaviors; teach conflict resolution skills; nurture a sense of community;  and generally, navigate a growingly complex and fast-paced society. These elements are also reinforced with students in their classrooms through monthly Project Cornerstone readings and discussions.

All Blossom Hill adults are welcome! Please feel free to bring your younger children if you find yourself interested in attending but do not have childcare.

The last two meetings of the school year will be held on April 16 and May 14 from 1:15 to 2:30 pm in room B3.

SCHOOL BUS FEASIBILITY STUDY In February, the Town of Los Gatos began a School Bus Feasibility Study. The first parent survey revealed an overwhelming positive response from the community. As a recap, the primary goal of the project is reducing traffic congestion near schools. This work is being conducted in coordination with, but independent from, the schools. To further refine where the service will be offered and what features are most important, in a more in-depth survey is underway. The survey was sent last week to all families in the Los Gatos Union School District. The survey closes April 8, 2018. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and stay informed. If you have questions contact [email protected].
