Day 10 - Thursday, Oct. 25: LisbonThis morning we cross into Portugal, visiting the city of Evora. A walled town since Roman times, Evora retains many fine palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a Roman temple possibly dedicated to Diana. We take a guided tour of the city before continuing to Lisbon, capital of Portugal, for a two-night stay. Breakfast and dinner

Day 11 - Friday, Oct. 26: Lisbon We tour the fascinating city of Lisbon, spread along the River Tagus before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. We see the Monument of the Discoveries, erected to commemorate the Portuguese expeditions that

landed in Brazil, plotted the sea route to India and the world’s first circumnavigation. We drive in the afternoon about 90 miles north to Portugal’s most famous Marian shrine, Fatima, where legend says Our Lady appeared to three young shepherds in 1917. Her message was a call for peace since for three years Portugal had been fighting alongside the Allies in the First World War. Day 1 – Tuesday, Oct. 16: Depart PortlandWe depart Portland for the transatlantic flight to Madrid, Spain.

Day 2 – Wednesday, Oct. 17: MadridWe arrive at Madrid-Barajas airport and transfer to our hotel to relax. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 3 – Thursday, Oct. 18: MadridThis morning we tour the city, made capital of Spain by Philip II in 1561. The city’s golden age in the 16th and 17th centuries produced many fine buildings and attracted artists from all over Europe. We drive along leafy avenues and see the statue of Cervantes’ fictional hero, Don Quixote, in the Plaza de España. We pass Cibeles square, Gran Via, the Christopher Columbus Memorial, Calle Mejor and Puerta del Sol. We visit the Cathedral and tour the Royal Palace, largest in Europe, with 2,800 rooms, and still used by King Juan Carlos for state receptions. We spend the afternoon and evening at leisure, maybe to visit the Prado Museum or enjoy tapas in one of the fine restaurants. Breakfast

Day 4 – Friday, Oct. 19: CordobaWe leave Madrid by the south highway and travel across Castille to Toledo, UNESCO World Heritage Site, former capital of Spain and the country’s spiritual center. Built in a spectacular setting encircled by the River Tagus, the city reflects the brilliant period of Spanish history when the cultures of East and West flourished and fused. We visit the Cathedral, seat of the archbishop, established in 1227, and see the magnificent sacristy, with its vaulted ceiling painted by the Italian Luca Giordano, known as Luca fa presto (Luca does it quickly) since he painted with both hands! The sacristy also houses a series of paintings by the Greek artist El Greco, who lived and worked in Toledo for the last 35 years of his life. After some free time for lunch, we drive south to the city of Cordoba in Andalucia, Spain’s most evocative region. Breakfast and dinner

Day 5 – Saturday, Oct. 20: Granada This morning we tour Cordoba, which greatly benefited from the long Moorish occupation during which Muslims, Christians and Jews lived peacefully together. We visit the Mezquita, one of Spain’s most unique buildings, where a Mosque was transformed into a Cathedral after the expulsion of the Moors. We then walk through the old Jewish quarter, where narrow streets and white walls conceal cool patios and floral gardens. Later in the day we drive across Europe’s largest olive growing area to Granada, which grew in importance following the Christian capture of Cordoba in 1236. For the next two and a half centuries the Kingdom of Granada flourished, until the final expulsion of the Moors from Spain by Queen Isabel the Catholic in 1492. Breakfast and dinner

Day 6 – Sunday, Oct. 21: Costa del SolWe visit the Alhambra, one of the most remarkable citadels ever built, standing on a hill commanding views of all of Granada. Built for the Nasrid Dynasty, the richness, variety and originality of the decoration nearly defy description. We descend the hill to the center of Granada to see the Royal Chapel, where the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabel testify to their definitive victory over the Moors. We continue to the Costa del Sol coast for a two-night stay. Breakfast and dinner

Day 7 – Monday, Oct. 22: Costa del SolWe enjoy a full-day excursion to Tangier, Morocco. Separated from Spain by the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is an intoxicating mix of North Africa, Spain, and France, blending exotic mystery, interesting history, beautiful vistas, unspoiled beaches and friendly people. We walk through the Medina and see where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic along the beautiful coastline. Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8 – Tuesday, Oct. 23: Seville This morning we drive through the Andalucian countryside of olive trees and white painted villages to Ronda, built at the edge of a ravine cut by the Guadalevin River. The cradle of bullfighting, the bullring is one of the oldest in Spain. Following some free time, we continue to Seville, Andalucia’s largest city, for a two-night stay. Breakfast and dinner

Day 9 - Wednesday, Oct. 24: SevilleWe enjoy a morning tour of Seville, from where many voyages of international discovery departed, including that of Christopher Columbus in 1492. We visit the Alcazar, or Royal Palace, incorporating sections from many different phases of construction. We walk through the Barrio Santa Cruz, the most colorful neighborhood in the Old City. We see the Cathedral, one of the largest in Europe, built on the site of a Mosque. It contains the tomb of Christopher Columbus. The afternoon and evening are spent at leisure, possibly to enjoy a Flamenco show. BreakfastRoyal Palace - Madrid
