SUPPORT COORDINATION FINDING GENUINE & RELIABLE SUPPORTFinding genuine, reliable support coordination for her teenage son felt like an endless battle for Williamstown mum, Maraid. It was not until she met Gateways Support Services Support Coordinator Ashesh that she finally felt supported. ‘If you don’t have someone like Ashesh, it is just so overwhelming. He’s taken the time to get to know me and my family and especially to get to know Duke.’ Maraid says. She says reliable support coordination has been vital to ensure Duke can fully participate in daily living and activities with his family in a meaningful and enjoyable way. Ensuring families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds understand their plans is also a key part of what Gateways Support Coordinators do. ‘(NDIS plans) are intimidating for a lot of families and language barriers make it even harder for them to understand,’ Ashesh says. ‘If we’re working with a Vietnamese family, for example, we have a Vietnamese Support Coordinator here at Gateways Support Services who can interpret the plan with the family. We also have three Support Coordinators from Indian backgrounds.’ To learn more about our Support Coordination services call Gateways Support Services on 9396 1111 or email [email protected] Read Duke’s full story on our website www.gateways.com.au

Meet the team

MEET BRIDGET! OUR NEW CAMP COORDINATOR 1/ Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background before becoming Camp Coordinator?I studied Social Work at RMIT University, then ended up working in admin for 5 years before joining the team at Gateways in reception and finance 18 months ago. I always hoped to put my degree to good use and move into a role that I was truly passionate about. Becoming the Camp Coordinator has allowed me to do just that – it is a role that is dynamic, rewarding, participant-focused and functions within an amazing team. I feel very lucky.

2/ What does a day in the life of a Camp Coordinator look like? A day in the life of the Camp Coordinator includes lots of planning and organising (which I love!), and liaising with participants, families, our wonderful support workers and the rest of the western Melbourne team to achieve great things.

3/ What qualities make a good Camp Coordinator? To be a good Camp Coordinator I believe you need to be organised, responsive, motivated and innovative. Oh and… you have to like planning holidays... Who doesn’t love that??!

4/ What is your favourite thing about working at Gateways? My favourite thing about working at Gateways is collaborating with the supportive, positive and driven western Melbourne team. The team is fully committed to delivering the best services we can for our participants, and we never stop striving for improvement, quality and growth.

5/ What are you most looking forward to? I am looking forward to continuing to evolve our camp services so that we are giving our participants what they want for their getaways and supporting them as best we can to achieve their goals. We aim to provide a diverse variety of camp options, such as the recent addition of monthly weekend escapes for adults. We want our camps to be adventurous, fun and relaxing... with plenty of opportunities to make friends and learn new things. I am excited to see the ways in which we are able to further develop the camp program for all age groups – so watch this space!
