SPOTLIGHT A PARK: JOY PARKJoy Park is a 44 Acre park located at 2615 Joy Road. The park has beautiful paved and soft surface trails showcasing the wonderful natural resources on the site. In early 2016 we will be celebrating the grand opening of the City’s first full scale public art project with wonderful amenities that will add play value to the park. Joy Park is a true hidden gem in the City.

Register for FIVE or more days and each day (including field trips) are only $28.00! Before Care (7:00AM - 9:00AM) or After Care (4:00PM - 5:30PM) is $5.00 per child per day. FITNESS CENTERMaplewood Community Center’s newly renovated fitness center offers state of the art cardiovascular and strength equipment. Our wide variety of cardio machines includes treadmills, ellipti-cal cross-trainers, step mills, summit trainers, stationary bikes, stair climbers and rowers. Most machines have an entertainment system, allowing you to watch television or use your iPod during your workout. We also offer weight training equipment to work ev-ery part of your body. A certified fitness professional can provide initial and ongoing instruction on how to use the equipment to meet your goals.

GROUP FITNESSEnjoy access to over 80 complimentary group exercise classes every week! Classes are held in our two studio spaces, the spin-ning room, the lap pool and the gym. AQUATIC CENTERThrilling family fun and fitness adventures await you. This fabulous aquatic center features a 6-lane lap pool, an interactive leisure pool (zero-depth), a 120-foot twirling water slide, and a soothing hot tub. A jaunty, interactive submarine takes center stage in the zero-depth entry leisure pool allowing children to climb inside the access hatch, slide out the turbo prop, or take a seat at the submarine’s control console. Children can peer through the interactive periscope, play with pressure activated sprayers and floor geysers, or use the submarine’s control panel to push button activate the sub’s roof-top spray guns. Murals of the coral reef and other underwater wonders grace the walls of the facility.

GYMBring a group of friends and challenge them to a game of basket-ball, volleyball, pickle ball, floor hockey or badminton. A variety of other fun gym activities are available and posted on the monthly gym schedule.

As children grow older, they reduce outdoor play activities. Some youth maintain their physical activity levels by participating in organized sports (teams), but others are left on their own, and exercise less and less as they get older. This class is designed to give youth ages 10 and older who are interested in working out at the Maplewood Community Center, a head start. They will learn basic fitness principles for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and be taught bodyweight exercises and machines that are age appro-priate. Passing this class will qualify the participants to utilize the fitness areas. Cost is $36.00 ($26.00 for MCC members).

Mind-body, Core Strength, and Core Stability are keys to a healthier lifestyle through mindful movement and Pilates. A Pilates Reformer is elegant, spring-based resistance equip-ment that allows one to work very precisely, developing strength and flexibility. Pilates teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. There is an emphasis on proper breathing and correct body alignment where quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. These movements create a sleek toned body while simultaneously alleviating pain and reduc-ing stress. MCC will now be offering Personal Pilates Reformer Training. Participants will learn and apply technical skills and moves such as inside cut, outside cut, croif and more. YOUTH SOFTBALL The softball season will begin league play the week of June 12 and conclude with a season-end tournament. All games are played in Little Canada, Maplewood, Mahtomedi, and White Bear Lake. Practices will begin approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the season. All ages as of January 1, 2016 determine league age.

T-BALL AND POP-UP LEAGUES (AGES 4-8)The t-ball and coach pitch programs are designed to teach the fun-damentals of baseball and softball to girls and boys. The program emphasizes individual growth, cooperation, fair play as opposed to competition, and most importantly fun. All games are played as controlled scrimmages – NO SCORES ARE KEPT. In order to provide a positive learning experience we use a ball designed for safety while at the same time developing confidence and skills. The Sunday t-ball teams will always hit from a tee. The Pop-up and Mite coaches pitch to the hitters. These leagues will be 10 game seasons.

Monitors follow an established, ten-stop-route; listening for frogs after sunset. Learn about Minnesota frog species, their calls, ranges and how monitoring works. Monitors must commit to three nights, each in a specific date range, April - July. For night-owls only! Free. Pre-register by April 5th.

NO-DIG GARDENING METHODSAT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTERSATURDAY, APRIL 23, 2:00 - 3:00PMPut down that shovel and retire the tiller! Organic Bob will give you step-by-step instructions for proven methods of gardening without digging. Not only do these techniques improve the soil, but they are also easier. Organic Bob will teach about Deep Mulching, Constructing Raised Beds, and more! Bob Dahm is a popular speaker, offering sobering, humorous and inspiring insights into organic lawn care, gardening, season extension and more. Garden clubs, eco or green events, community educa-tion, garden centers, churches, and remodeling fairs are some of the venues where talks are given. Fee: $10 (free for community garden members). ADOPT-A-PARKThe goal of the Adopt-A-Park Program is to provide an opportunity for interested parties to take part in maintaining our park system. By providing this opportunity it not only encourages and promotes community involvement but also allows us to beautify and improve our parks. All Adopt-A-Park projects should aim towards benefiting the majority of park users. This opportunity is available to any individual, family, resident, group organization, or business who is eager to help beautify our parks. The Adopt-A-Park commitment period is between April 1 – October 31. Applications are accepted throughout the year and require a minimum of once a month dedication. ADULT ATHLETIC SIGN SPONSORSHIPThe adult athletic sign sponsorship is a unique marketing opportunity for local businesses. Maplewood Parks & Recreation has started an outfield sign program at Goodrich. This is an opportunity to purchase one, two, or three 4’ x 8’ outfield signs that are visible from the softball fields, as well as North St. Paul Road. Goodrich houses the entire adult softball program (summer, fall and late fall leagues) and hosts multiple youth tournaments throughout the season. The funds from these sponsorships will go directly to maintaining and upgrading this facility keeping the fields suitable for the high level of play they receive. JR. POLAR FOOTBALLJr. Polar Football is a volunteer youth sports organization committed to building teamwork, understanding the fundamen-tals of the game, developing skills, encouraging sportsmanship and most importantly having fun playing football. The program is open to residents that live within or attend school (public or private) within the geographic boundary of North St. Paul - Maplewood - Oakdale and is part of the North St. Paul Athletic Association. The football program is open to all youth. The goal of the football program is to encourage sportsmanship and to teach the fundamentals of football. Flag Football is available to boys & girls entering Kindergarten up to 2nd grade. Tackle football begins in 3rd grade and continues through 8th grade. NORTH POLARS FASTPITCHThe North Polars Fastpitch Association (NPFA) is a non-profit organization established to foster the girl’s fastpitch softball program in the area of Independent School District 622, which is within the boundaries of North St. Paul High School. This includes all or portions of the communities of North St. Paul, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and Oakdale. The association exists to fulfill the girls fastpitch softball needs of the community and is the primary advocate of the traveling program. The association supports good sportsmanship and the sound development of softball fundamentals within the community to ensure that girls participating in the program will have a positive and rewarding experience that will maximize personal and team growth. The association requires quality coaching and provides an atmosphere for learning softball skills for both coaches and players. The association sponsors membership in appropriate leagues to encourage quality competition.
