We are seeking compassionate and dedicated Nursing Auxiliaries to join our staff bank providing palliative and end of life care in our modern in-patent unit in Edinburgh. The great benefit about being on the Hospice staff bank is the flexibility it provides for both you and the Hospice. You have control over when you want to work to fit in with your lifestyle and other commitments. Shift availability varies but examples of our core shifts include an Early 07:15-15:15, a late 12:15-20:15. A nightshift is 19:45-07:45. Other shifts including shorter shifts may also be available. As a Bank Nursing Auxiliary you will: Implement the agreed care plan to help individuals to be cared Communicate effectively and appropriately with individuals and their families Undertake simple dressings as required Assist individuals with administration of their medication Carry out any essential domestic duties Encourage/support mobility and abide by moving and handling guidelines Assist with nutritional needs Be able to provide accurate observation Work to ensure the standard of infection prevention and control are followed at all times

2. JOB PURPOSE

To assist the nursing staff in the delivery of the highest quality of nursing care to palliative care patients who are facing a life threatening illness and to support their family and friends.

3. DIMENSIONS

To assist in the delivery of high quality nursing care to a team of 15 patients and their families

Report to the team leader relevant information regarding any physical, emotional, social or spiritual concerns the patient may impart, that requires the intervention of qualified staff.

Responsible for safe care of patient valuables

With Ward Clerk ensure medical supplies stock levels within patient areas are maintained

4. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT

To provide high quality specialist palliative care to patients with advanced progressive disease for whom there is no cure. Through a multidisciplinary team approach, the focus of care is based on providing the best quality of life for each individual patient as well as supporting their family, friends and those important to them.

To assist in the delivery of high quality nursing care of patients, maintaining their privacy and dignity at all times including bathing, toileting & assisting with feeding, assisting patients on oxygen therapy

To work as a member of the nursing and multidisciplinary team under the supervision of the qualified nursing staff reporting changes as appropriate

The post holder works to established Hospice policies, procedures and protocols with supervision available. Patients are admitted into the hospice from home, hospital or day hospice. There is an ongoing need to be actively involved in the administration of patient and family care, offering a listening ear and communicating throughout each shift, appraising qualified staff of any relevant informal meetings with qualified staff daily. Performance appraised formally annually.
