Shortlybeforethedeathofactorandcomedian,W.C.Fields,afriendvisitedhiminhishospitalroom…andwassurprisedto indhimthumbingthroughaBible.AskedwhathewasdoingwithaBibleinhishands,Fieldsreplied:“I'mlookingforloopholes.”
Overwhelmedbythecoldhardtruthofhismortality,hewassuddenlycon-frontedwiththefactthatallhislifehehadbeenavoidingthetoughquestionofwhathappenswhenlifeinthisworldcomestoanend.Andthisconfronta-tionlefthimfranticallythumbingthroughabookhehadbeenstudiouslyavoidingallhislife!
Fields’replytohisfriendsummarizestheapproachthatmostofusadoptwhenitcomestothetoughquestionsoflifeandoffaith…avoidanceseemstobetheorderofthedayformostofus.
WhenAlistairandIdecidedthatwewouldspendthemonthofJulyfocusingonMatthew13–achapterrichinimageryandsymbolismfoundinthepara-blesthatJesususeshere–Iwasratherexcited(mypreferencehasalwaysbeenforamoresystematicandseriesorientedapproachtopreaching).Butthisexcitementsoonturnedtodread,whenIrealizedthatIwouldbetheonedealingwithverses24-30,theParableoftheWeeds.AParablethatdealsinevitablywitheschatologyandjudgement!Twosubjectsthatweinthemainstreamof21stcenturyChristianityjustsimplyaren’tcomfortablewith.

Madiba Day 2017 Parkview Pre‐primary children brought sandwiches, bread and biscuits for the homeless who
are fed at our soup kitchen daily. Jaco received the food on behalf of St Columba’s and took
the children and staff into the church, where he spoke to them, and said a prayer regarding
helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
