Ms. Sowers-Adler was named one of New York City’s top 15 cabaret acts of 2010 by Andrew Martin of Nitelife Exchange. Rita’s Italian Ice Vero Beach Relocating

There is telephone scam tar-geting local residents in the Fellsmere area. The follow-ing story below has been released by the Fellsmere Police Department to make citizens aware of this scam/fraud attempt.

On November 20, 2013 at approximately 1:00 pm, a resident of the City of Fells-mere reported that she re-ceived a telephone call from an unknown male identifying himself as a representative of a company called “Program Energy.” The male caller initially spoke to the com-plainant in fluent Spanish but switched to English during their conversation.

The caller told the complain-ant that the City of Fellsmere recently “passed a law” re-quiring all city residents to have their air conditioning units and “heater units” in-spected “due to fire hazards from the dryer unit.”

The complainant said the male caller tried to “pressure her” to make an appointment for the inspections and that the fee for the inspections would be $49.00.

The complainant became suspicious because she be-lieved the City of Fellsmere would have notified her of such a change in her monthly water bill. The complainant said the male caller became more aggressive in his at-tempt to schedule an appoint-ment when she mentioned calling the City of Fellsmere to verify the “law change.”

The City of Fellsmere has not enacted any new ordinances or resolutions requiring man-datory inspections and any resident who is contacted by anyone for such an inspec-tion, whether on the tele-phone or in person is asked to report the incident to the Fellsmere Police Department at 772-571-1360.

One of Vero Beach’s favorite frozen treat establishments is on the move!

Rita’s Italian Ice will be re-locating to a brand new loca-tion on or around December 5th.

The new location will be on US Hwy 1 near 12th Street in Vero Beach. It will be lo-

cated behind Carabbas near the Five Guys And Fries and Planet Fitness.

According to the owners, you can still purchase your gift cards prior to the move so you don’t miss out on this ultra popular holiday gift.

As part of their upcoming specials they are offering a

Free $10 giftcard with every $50 giftcard purchase, and free reg ice with $25 giftcard purchases.

For more information, Rita’s will be posting updates as they ready their new space regularly on their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ RitasItalianIceVero-Beach.

Eight Steps to perfect

Xmas cook-The time-honored popularity of holiday cookie baking remains strong even in today’s grab-and-go society.

* Get organized. Read the recipe thoroughly.

* Keep it simple.

* Use the right fat. Some cookie recipes only achieve their best fla-vor and texture with butter. Hope-fully, those recipes will specify “butter only; no substitutes.”

* Measure accurately. Metal or plastic measuring cups are intend-ed for dry ingredients such as flour and sugar. When measuring flour, stir it in the canister to lighten it and then gently spoon into a dry measuring cup and level the top with the straight edge of a knife.

* Chill dough properly. The chill-ing time given in a recipe is the optimum time for easy rolling and shaping. If you need to speed up chilling, wrap the dough and place it in the freezer.

* Use a powerful mixer. An elec-tric stand mixer is the best way to mix heavy cookie dough. With a handheld mixer, you’ll probably end up needing to stir in flour by hand, which can be a nightmare.

* Choose the right cookie sheets. Look for shiny, heavy-gauge cookie sheets with very low or no sides.

* Know your oven. Experiment with the temperature of your oven. If your oven typically cooks items faster than the recipe calls for, adjust accordingly. Don’t bake cookies for too long. They should be light brown around the edges and look a little underdone when they come out.

Cool the cookies on the cookie sheet initially and then transfer them to a wire rack once they can be lifted with a spatula with-out breaking them. Once they are cooled completely, you can deco-rate them or store directly in an airtight container.

Cell Phones for Soldiers Host Added

Victory Center at IR Mall OnboardPak Mail Beachside has ex-tended their successful Cell Phone for Soldiers campaign to the Victory Center Military Store located in the east wing of the Indian River Mall of-fering free boxes, pickup, and shipping of the phones.

The Victory Center store, which is a non-profit 501c3, sells various type of military items from camo to accesso-ries to flags; nearly 50% of the store’s funds goes to provid-ing bus transportation to vet-erans to the West Palm Beach Veterans Medical Center.

When asked about the part-nership with Pak Mail Beach-side to host a Cell Phones for Soldiers box, Marty Zickert the President of the Veteran’s Council said, “We are veter-ans serving veterans here and to know that for each phone donated troops can have upof

wards of two and half hours of talk time to loved one back home; it was easy for us to say yes.”

Cell Phones for Soldiers, cre-ated in 2004 by Robbie and Brittany Bergquiest, on aver-age the program distributes 12,000 calling cards each week to bases around the world. To date, Pak Mail Beachside has collected over 100 phones since October and hopes that the second drop off point in the mall will be a wonderful addition to acquire as many phones as possible during the holiday season.

For more details about how the Cell Phones for Soldiers program works or any other questions please call Susan Lorenz of Pak Mail Beachside at 772-231-0021.

Rare Earth Gallery Making A Buzz In Downtown Stuart

Rare Earth Gallery is mak-ing a buzz in downtown Stu-art as the recent recipient of the City of Stuart’s quarterly Business Buzz Award. The award is presented by Stu-art’s Community Redevel-opment Agency.

The gallery was founded 38 years ago and has been in historic downtown Stu-art since 1991. Rare Earth Gallery recently completed a renovation of its unique and handcrafted artwork, in-cluding an expanded gallery space with new displays, new artists and new artwork from more than 70 artists. The gallery specializes in original art and gicleés, ce-ramics, glassware, wood bowls and vases, oil and watercolor paintings and photographs, handcrafted jewelry and pottery among many other gift items.

Steve and Becky Binder, owners of Rare Earth since 2009, were presented a Cer-tificate of Recognition at a recent Coffee with the City Manager. The award is given to “buzzworthy” busi-nesses for helping to create a positive image for the City of Stuart and its popular CRA district.

“The gallery has a 30% in-crease in retail gallery space with unique artwork for

homes and businesses” said Binder. “Rare Earth has become a destination for art-minded customers. We support our community with our annual HeARTS 4 Hos-pice fundraiser around Val-entine’s Day, and with more than 60% of our artists being Floridians.” Binder was just elected 2014 President of the Downtown Business As-sociation. DBA’s purpose is to promote community pride and unity by actively con-ducting community events throughout the year.

Binder is coordinating a re-opening of the gallery on Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gift pack-ages are part of give-aways throughout the day. Re-freshments are available.

The Buzz Award was first presented in 2009. Four businesses are recognized each year with the city demonstrating its growth in business since 1986 when the City Commission started a revitalization project of the downtown area.

Rare Earth Gallery is locat-ed at 41 SW Flagler Street in Historic Downtown Stuart. For additional information, contact 772.287.7744 or go online at www.rareearthgal-lery.com.

Planning for the holidaysNo matter what time of year it is, the kitchen is always the busiest room in the home. That’s especially the case during the holiday season. With the added stress of planning the perfect menu and creating the ideal holiday atmosphere for your guests, it’s no surprise that many people feel overwhelmed with the planning process.

One major stress reliever is to create a planning list prior to those get-togethers - which can help give you peace of mind, even if you anticipate a full house. With this “Countdown to Guests Timeline” from Peter Thorn-hill, executive chef at LG, you’ll feel prepared to take on whatever the holiday sea-son brings!

Two weeks out:

Planning in advance is criti-cal for hosting a successful family gathering this time of year. At this stage, plan out your menu, keeping in mind the number of people you are expecting. From this, create a shopping list, and note what menu items can be made ahead of time.

One week out:

Do your grocery shopping now. If you can, try to sched-ule your trip in the middle of a week day, so you can avoid the large crowds. Schedule the prep work for everything on the menu and prepare those items that can sit for a couple of days without per-ishing.

Also tackle the major house-cleaning - try and do one room a day to help spread out the task and make it more manageable.

Three days out:

Gather the dishes you’ll need for preparing and serving the food, and give them a good wash, if needed. If you’re serving a turkey, be sure to thaw it in the refrigerator. Also take the time to deco-rate your home. Use seasonal flowers to create DIY center-pieces.

One day out:

Prep everything you can. Peel potatoes and carrots and store them in cold water in your re-frigerator. Cut up vegetables to store in freezer bags in your refrigerator and tear up bread for the stuffing to dry out overnight. With all of this prep work, your refrigerator is going to be put through its paces. New Energy Star certified French-door refrig-erators like those from LG with a special Door-in-Door compartment within the re-frigerator door allow you quick access to your most commonly used and favor-ite foods - like milk, eggs or juice, without having to open the entire refrigerator. This feature ensures less cold air escapes, conserving energy.

Also preset your stations. If you’re creating a drink sta-tion, precut garnishes, pur-chase ice and have every-thing else in place. The same goes with the dining room ta-ble. Preset the serving dishes and polish any silverware, if needed.

The day of:

Timing is crucial to pull ev-erything off. Be sure to eat a complete breakfast, be-cause you’ll need the energy! To ensure all your food is cooked and ready to serve

Planning for holidays cont....without delay, select LG ranges feature Infrared Grill technology that eliminates the need to pre-heat when broiling your turkey, while still allow-ing the food to be juicy in-side and crisp on the out-side. Some models offer two separate oven com-partments, which means you’ll have flexibility to cook multiple items at different temperatures saving you time to focus on other planning details. This allows you to pres-ent your menu items hot and ready to eat, all at the same time.

“While you have your main dishes, sides or des-serts in the oven, prepare your salads and drinks to

chilled in the refrigerator, and check over the guest areas to make sure they are stocked with the necessi-ties,” Thornhill says.

Clean-up tip

Take advantage of timesav-ers to help with clean-up af-ter the holidays are over. For example, many new ranges feature EasyClean technol-ogy, cutting oven cleaning time from hours to minutes and without the use of harsh chemicals or high heat.

With these smart tips, you’ll be able to maximize effi-ciencies enjoy your guests this holiday season.

Just be sure to take the time to enjoy the holidays!

These codes apply for the Redbox kiosks. Most of these codes will work once per credit/debit card use. You can reuse these codes by using different cards each time you use them. Pre-paid Visa cards work very well for this use. Unfortunately, some of these codes expire eventually.
