The National Lotteries Board (NLB) held its third annual Stakeholder Indaba from 22 to 24 September at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. The aim of the Indaba was to create a discussion opportunity between NGOs and government.

This year one of the main themes was youth unemployment. According to recent statistics released by Stats SA, the youth demographic is the largest unemployed group in South Africa. Stats SA also found that social grant benefi ciaries increased from 2.6 million in 1997 to 16.6 million in 2012.

According to Department of Trade and Industry Minister, Dr Rob Davies, the NLB

hopes to uncover new partnership ideas that can address the youth unemployment and welfare dependency situation in South Africa: “The National Lotteries Board’s annual Indaba is one of the biggest face-to-face gatherings where both government and the NGO sector come together to discuss the challenges facing our country."

"Youth unemployment is one such challenge. As government, we are implementing various measures to facilitate the development of our youth. However, there are only so many direct training programmes and employment opportunities that government, as an employer, can create for our youth. I urge you all to take this issue of youth skills development very seriously."

"The National Lotteries Board has committed signifi cant fi nancial resources in the past to youth development programmes and they

will continue to do so until we can bring youth unemployment under control,” said Davies. The NLB will look at ideas put forward by potential benefi ciaries and specifi cally look for programmes that will uplift the youth within communities.

This year’s Indaba also marked the NLB’s 15 years of existence. In the past 15 years, the NLB has distributed more than R18 billion to benefi ciary organisations in the sports and recreation, arts and heritage and charity sectors.

According to NLB Corporate Services Executive, Modjadji Makoela, the Indaba should assist the NLB board with establishing funding policy standards , that would hopefully target the problem areas within communities, and limit the risk of fraud. This standardisation process will be based on insights gained at the Indaba.

The Ekurhuleni Business Initiative is a business networking forum where businesspeople from all walks of life get together to create profitable and mutually beneficial business opportunities.

EBI CEO Chris van Biljon explains that it is vital for businesses in today’s modern day economy to create business platforms. The aim of the EBI is to enable businesses to connect and share common goals, ambitions and strategies with one another - which would be difficult to do without a common platform like the EBI. Through their links they can then share resources and skills, and enable their businesses to become

strategically positioned on the front-line of the ever expanding frontiers of the unfolding global market. The EBI puts as many as 100 businesses in touch with one another every week through networking meetings. For more than 12 years members have met loyally every Monday evening at various venues throughout Ekurhuleni. Every week another member has a turn to host a networking event and to deliver a presentation to the members. Last week David Troskie from Imperial Nissan Boksburg hosted the EBI event. If you are interested in becoming part of the EBI, contact Chris van Biljon on 073 763 9426 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

Loyal gamblers of Carnival City can look forward to a brand-new wide area progressive jackpot - Sunstriker. If the thrill of winning a mega jackpot of R1 million or more gets your adrenaline pumping, then this machine is a gaming experience not to miss.

Sun International launched this new, national mega slot machine at a grand VIP gathering, which was held at Carnival City and co-hosted by the Locnville brothers. Piet Swanepoel, Slots Manager at Sun International, said that Sun International casinos had been moving away from mega jackpot machines, but, because of popular demand, the group was re-introducing this mega jackpot trend. The first step in this direction was the launch of the Duma gambling machine a year ago.As from Tuesday 23 September 2014, the Sunstriker machines, that pay out from R750 000 up to R1,5 million a jackpot, went live for the first time in South Africa. Swanepoel explained that wide area progressive machines, such as Sunstrikers, are linked through the Internet and every player nationwide contributes to the pot. This means that the grand

total escalates faster, and bigger jackpots can be won. Sunstriker’s sister machine, Duma, paid out R39,5 million in only 18 months, equalling about two mega jackpot winners per month nationally, said Charl Geyser of Simplicit-e Gaming, which supplies the machines. After the grand unveiling, lucky VIP guests had a chance to play the Sunstriker for the very first time. There have been no winners yet, but the machine is slowly gaining momentum and one lucky player will soon have the privilege of taking the first pot.

CELEBRITIES: The Locnville brothers attended the unveiling.

On Friday 19 September, a few dedicated Benoni residents gave their time to do a clean-up of the parklands around Farrarmere Gardens, Farrarmere Community Centre, Benoni Nursery School (Village) and Belvedere School.

Paul Rotherham, Jacaranda FM presenter and long-time resident of Benoni, brought his two children along to assist in the clean-up. In total, 40 bags were collected in about three hours, which included all sorts of broken and dumped equipment; even computers, vacuum cleaners and tyres. Samantha Choles, PRO for the Paper Recycling Association of South Africa, who organised the clean-up, said the following: “We are looking to engage the local community of Farrarmere Gardens by providing some rubbish bags and encouraging them not to dump their rubbish. A message that I do want to emphasise is that we don’t need special clean-up days, mornings or afternoons – we can each do our little bit: firstly, not to litter; secondly: to educate others about littering and recycling; thirdly: to clean up the areas around us – from our pavements to around the block. I would like to make a special appeal to businesses and shopping centres to take pride in the areas in which they operate and educate staff about taking their lunch packaging to the closest bin, not sweeping garden debris and litter into storm water drains. If everybody did a little bit in their own little space, we would make a big difference.”

Choles further encourages communities to recycle: “what does create jobs is recycling. It is estimated that some 100 000 people earn an income from recycling, through formal employment or informal collection of recyclables. And sadly, only 5% of South African households recycle their paper.”

Choles advises residents to follow these easy steps to get started:

1. Separate waste into the various recyclables.

a. Paper, cardboard, milk and juice cartons

b. Plastic, cans and glass

2. Go to www.mywaste.co.za to find your nearest recycling drop-off site or agree to keep your recyclables in a bag for an informal collector.

3. Go to www.prasa.co.za for some helpful paper recycling tips.

THANK YOU: Samantha Choles and the clean-up team

If you have seen the movie Divergent, then you should be familiar with the fear test completed by all the rebel factions. For this test, the rebels are injected with a serum that makes them hallucinate their worst fear. In the movie, Tris has to overcome various obstacles, such as a Houdini glass box slowly filling up with water, ridiculous heights, quicksand - and even more terrifying scenarios. This past week I experienced a Divergent scenario of my own: being surrounded by trucks. I have a somewhat exaggerated and borderline abnormal fear of trucks on a highway, especially during traffic. Passing trucks in the lane right next to them, or seeing a truck creep awkwardly close to my boot in traffic with no regard for a safe following distance, are two things I cannot handle. If I ever had to be in Divergent, I am positive that this would have been my fear scenario: being surrounded by overloaded trucks with wheels as big as my entire i10. Do you have a fear to overcome? How do you plan on overcoming it?

1) Why did you enter Mr SA?

It’s something that I have always wanted to do since I was younger. I saw it as not just a massive feather in my cap, but also a chance to stand up, be heard and make a difference in the lives around me. It is an accolade that can only be earned for the right reasons, so in doing so, it will truly be a huge achievement for me.

2) What has been one of the most rewarding experiences of your Mr SA journey so far?

One of the most rewarding experiences is definitely putting smiles on peoples’ faces, giving them the gift of hope and assuring them that all will be OK.Sometimes all people need is a tiny gesture of love and a glimpse of hope - and that alone can change their outlook on their current situations and empower them to aspire to greater heights.

3) What initiatives/projects have you been involved in?

Particularly this year, I have been involved in many different initiatives that are quite close to my heart, namely children and animals. From hosting a ballet event for women (both young and old) at the Joburg Ballet, to assisting animals in finding foster homes, to collecting blankets and food for the underprivileged at the Salvation Army, and most recently, bringing National Heritage Day to a charity home called New Beginningz, where I had the pleasure of braaiing for these precious kids and spending the day with them on 24 September.

4) When is the Mr SA camp? And what will the contestants get up to there?

Everything surrounding the news of the camp is still quite under wraps, as it will serve as a teaser for a big announcement coming soon towards the end of October. What I can tell you, though, is that there is a reality series starting at the end of October on Tshwane TV which you can watch on the DSTV bouquet.

5) When is the final event?

The eagerly anticipated final event is bookmarked for December.

6) What tasks have they set out for the contestants in order to stand a chance to win this prestigious title?/ What does this competition require of the contestants?

Well, since the start of the competition, way back in January, we have been given many challenges and tasks - each one quite different from the next,

and ranging from charity to brand awareness to community projects and maximum media exposure. Through these numerous challenges, we have and are being scored. The SMS voting also contributes towards the grand total at the end.

7) If you win, how do you plan to inspire the young men of SA? I saw that you are doing a Man of Honour challenge on FB; are there any attributes you feel men in SA need to develop or improve on?

Yes, Mr South Africa launched the #MenOfHonour campaign this year, showing the public how upstanding gentlemen of the community should in fact carry themselves. It has also allowed the public to get to know us better, by reading our views, comments and write-ups. It is a #100DayChallenge campaign and it has proved very interesting, and challenging at the same time, as you never know what tomorrow’s challenge will be. I am thoroughly enjoying it though, as it certainly pushes one’s thought processes and creativity to the next level.

My message throughout the year is, and has always been, clear from the word go. My message to the youth is “So Can You” !

8) What would you say to someone who thinks that Mr SA is a beauty pageant? How would you describe its purpose and relevance?

I could certainly see why someone would consider Mr South Africa a beauty pageant. I would be lying if I said physical attributes didn’t play a role. But it’s so much more than that. Carrying a title of this stature is an honour and a privilege for anyone. The purpose and relevance is simple - to be the best Man of Honour you can be. To teach the younger generation that humility, honesty, manners, respect and empathy toward others certainly goes a long way.

9) What is your full-time job or career apart from Mr SA?

I am in the media industry. Apart from my Mr South Africa duties, I run my own media business called CMDC (CliveMaistryDotCom) that I started back in 2010.I supply clients (predominantly television) with video content and fillers for their respective channels, as well as adverts. I am also a television presenter. You may have seen me on SuperSport Blitz. I am currently on tellytrack, where I present a show called The Racing RoundUp, covering all entertainment based news from the world of horse racing. Staying with presenting, I am also a presenter on The Tech Report which can be seen on eNCA. You would have heard me on 5FM, on the Weekend Breakfast Show with Elana Afrika and Mark Gillman a few years back. During 2014 I was also selected as the Brand Ambassador of McNabs and one of the faces of Sorbet Man.

10) Why would you feel proud to be an ambassador of this country?

I think we have such a beautiful and diverse rainbow nation. So much potential amongst our youth still needs to be unearthed. I really can’t imagine a higher accolade for an ambassador!

You can vote for me by SMSing ‘MRSA 017’ to 47439

A woman in her 20s was killed and man in his 40s was critically injured last Monday, when a bakkie and light motor vehicle collided head-on on the R51 Pretoria Road in Benoni.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found the two motor vehicles lying on the side of the road. The light motor vehicle had caught alight in the collision but the fi re had already been extinguished by a passerby. Paramedics assessed the scene, fi nding

trapped inside the smouldering vehicle a woman who had, tragically, already succumbed to her multiple injuries.

One occupant from the bakkie had sustained critical injuries while four others escaped with minor to moderate injuries. Paramedics provided the patients with advanced life support before transporting them to nearby hospitals for further treatment. The cause of the collision is not yet known, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

Around 12:16 on 23 September, Ekurhuleni Metro Police members responded to a call for assistance made by Netstar vehicle tracking company members chasing a Toyota RunX stolen hours earlier in Edenvale. EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention members managed to corner the vehicle at the intersection of Black Reef and Heidelberg Roads in Wadeville, with the result that the vehicle was recovered and the driver arrested. The fi ve-door black Toyota RunX was reportedly stolen that morning at 08:30 in Edenvale.

The 38-year-old driver who was apprehended and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle at Elsburg Police Station was found wearing gloves, presumably so as not to leave his fi ngerprints on the vehicle. The dashboard of the RunX was found ripped, the ignition was tampered with and the gear knob was missing.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

A man and a woman tragically lost their lives after a helicopter crashed and burst into fl ames in Germiston near Rand Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The helicopter was a Matrix recovery helicopter operated by Henley Air, which was returning from a vehicle recovery mission . Paramedics and members of other emergency services arrived on the scene and found the remains of the burnt-out chopper.

Tragically, by the time the paramedics arrived, both of the people in the helicopter were dead.

A 22-year-old man was killed when two light motor vehicles collided on the R23 just after the Benoni Road exit, on the morning of Saturday 20 September.

ER24 paramedics found the deceased man ejected from his vehicle while his passengers sustained only minor injuries. One of the surviving occupants was transported to hospital for observation.

The driver of the second vehicle was not present at the scene when the paramedics arrived. Local authorities are s till investigating the cause of the accident.

SAMA-Award-winning Afrikaans pop artist Bobby van Jaarsveld and multiplatinum-selling singer Gerhard Steyn are billed to perform with internationally acclaimed rock band, The Parlotones, in concert at Carnival City on Friday 10 October 2014.

The two talented performers replace electro pop duo, Locnville (LCNVL), who regretfully had to cancel their performance at the event. The Parlotones will headline the concert, performing a rocking two hour set. Fans are set to get “up close and personal” with the four-member band which has achieved multiplatinum-selling status in South Africa and gained global popularity touring the world. The show – a Thikho Events Initiative – will feature the band’s chart-topping hits like Push Me To The Floor.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the uber popular Parlotones on our stage this spring and we are buoyed by the news that they will be joined by two of South Africa’s most popular Afrikaans pop performers. Music fans

are getting three top acts in one awesome show. The concert promises something for everyone, with authentic South African pop and rock combining for this spectacular musical event,” says Jaco Saaiman, the Entertainment Manager at Carnival City. Voted by the public as Cosmopolitan’s Sexiest Man in 2011, Van Jaarsveld is certain to have the ladies swooning as he performs songs like Spieeltjie, ‘n Vrou wil dit hoor, Net vir jou, and Kyk waar is ons nou. Since bursting on to the music scene in 2006 with his first gold-selling album Duisend Ure and winning the Best Newcomer Award at the Huisgenoot Temp Awards, van Jaarsveld has entrenched himself as one of the country’s best-loved Afrikaans pop artists.

Tickets are available through Computicket and range in price from R185 to R285. The show will kick off at 19:00 at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena. People who booked for the original Redefined event, featuring The Parlotones and LCNVL, will have their tickets honoured at this show.

This year Carnival City hosted the spectacular A Festa Portuguesa from 23 to 28 September. This exciting outdoor festival offered an absolute Portuguese cultural extravaganza of good food, live music, theme park rides and more. Even though the event took place in Brakpan, people from all over the East Rand made their way to the popular entertainment destination. Apart from many stalls, entertainment, such as Mi Casa and Bombocas made sure that guests were properly entertained at every turn.

Cenotaph of Dan wa Moriri is the very first commissioned play of So Solo, a new creative property of Wits Theatre that features Witsies Gerard Bester and Toni Miyambo. Wits Theatre hopes to be able to publish an anthology of these plays every three years, since it is crucial to the development of South African arts that playscripts become artefacts of our shared cultural heritage.

A hairdresser, a father, a son, and a sofa…in an attempt to locate his notion of his “father” and map the fading footsteps of history, a son tries to reconstruct his father through barely remembered moments from the past, fading images, sepia tinted memories, truths and half- truths… As parts of us recede into the past and distant memory, what is left in the present is nothing but the ordinary. Gerard graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand Drama School in 1990 with a BA Dramatic Arts. He is an actor, arts administrator, director and teacher. He has also worked for various organizations as a project manager. Imitation, it has been said, is the sincerest form of flattery. On Facebook, however, a fake profile can do serious damage to one’s personal life, social standing and business or professional reputation.According to the Facebook website, they do “not allow accounts that pretend to be you or someone else, use your photos, list a fake name, don’t represent a real person.” Provision is made by Facebook for users to report fake pages, but there are millions of fake pages and Facebook is not always efficient about responding to complaints.

Lately, however, this social media group has been insisting that users operate under the names that appear on their identity documents, which has angered some drag performers and LGBTI persons who prefer to hide their real identities. On the other hand, a Vancouver man recently had to enlist the help of a local media consumer activist to persuade Facebook to remove a photograph of his wife which had been stolen from her page and used to create a fake profile under another name. [http://bc.ctvnews.ca/facebook-under-fire-over-response-to-fake-profile-1.2001452] In South Africa Facebook rapist Thabo Bester used 13 aliases and fake Facebook advertising to lure models to so-called photographic shoots that actually turned out to be opportunities he had created to rape them. What about fake Facebook profiles used for the purposes of cyber-

bullying? These are easy to create with the help of fake email addresses that the likes of Google, Yahoo and Hotmail allow to be set up for free. Although Facebook’s chief security officer Joe Sulllivan told CNN in 2012, “On Facebook we have a really large commitment in general to finding and disabling false accounts. Our entire platform is based on people using their real identities,” discovering the identities of Facebook impersonators can be challenging when cyber-bullies hide behind fake Facebook profiles created with anonymous email addresses - as a court order is required to identify someone using an anonymous email address.[ http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Fake-Facebook-Profile]Already in 2012, there were 83 million fake Facebook pages, which the social media moguls classified in three groups: duplicates, misclassifieds and undesirables. Duplicates make up 4,8 of the total; misclassifieds, which make up 2,4% of Facebook pages, are not people but groups or organizations; and undesirables – at only 1,5% - are pages set up for purposes such as spamming. [http://edition.cnn.com/2012/08/02/tech/social-media/facebook-fake-accounts/]

So, there is hope. If you are a victim of a fake Facebook profile set up to harass you, you are just one of many; and, as this problem increases, prospective employers and others searching your name on Google will have to bear in mind that not everything on the Internet is as real as it seems.

As South Africans celebrated Heritage Day last Wednesday, the library and information services sector – which plays a critical role in telling, preserving, storing and creating access to records of our heritage – was in its third day of the 16th Annual Library and Information Association’s (LIASA) Conference. Over 650 delegates representing approximately 200 organizations in the field attended the conference, which was proudly hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Boksburg. Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, a former librarian herself, expressed her department’s full-hearted support for the library and information services sector, stating that they shared a common goal towards the

preservation and promotion of the country’s cultural heritage. “As we celebrate Heritage Day, we must sit and read to our children like we used to sit around the fire and listen to elders tell stories. Libraries play a critical role in telling, preserving and making stories that are made accessible to the nation and thus promote the heritage of our country, ” said Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi. The annual LIASA conference has, over the years, emerged as the highlight of the library and information services calendar. It is an opportunity for practitioners to engage with international and local experts on current trends, to share best practices, to locate libraries on the national development agenda, to focus on libraries in schools, and to enhance the skills and competencies of the professionals in attendance. In her address during the opening session of the conference, Professor Rocky Ralebipi-Simela, the National Librarian and CEO of the National Library of South Africa, said that the state of South African libraries after 20 years of democracy has improved tremendously, but there is still room for development.

She highlighted that the conference is about uplifting the profession of librarian. “Libraries are a place of social cohesion and social development and as librarians we change people’s lives daily because the work we do impacts on lives,” she said. There are over 1800 public libraries in South Africa which cater for the various information needs of communities.

Dr Zakes Mazibuko, Consumer Campaigner African Centre for Biosafety, writes:

South Africa is the largest producer of genetically modified (GM) crops on the continent. 86% of our maize and over 90% of our soya is GM. All our maize meal brands thus have high levels of GM maize and all our breads have high levels of GM soya in the soya flour. However, the consumer is not afforded the right and the opportunity to choose if they wish to consume food that is produced through genetic modification (technological engineering of seeds). With three of the world’s major seed companies operating in the country, South Africa has become a channel through which biotechnology machinery operates in the whole continent.

GM crops are problematic in ways other than that the consumer is forced to consume food that they have no choice in. GM technology affects the small agricultural producers who cannot afford expensive GM seeds; farmers cannot save seeds, which is an age-old farming practice, and this affects food sovereignty as the rich countries which own the GM seeds control the prices of seeds and the associated herbicides, and thus the prices of food; GM crops mean that developing countries depend on rich countries for food supplies and this pushes out the margins of food insecurity further for the country’s poor majority; and major research on GM crops conducted on rats in France has showed increased tumours.

It is for these reasons that we as consumers call on the authorities to enforce laws that ensure correct labelling on all food items, and that food retailers are serious about the rights of consumers to choose what they wish to eat by proving non-GM alternatives to our maize and bread staples.
