FRESH APPROACH TO LOCAL NEWS

TWO TIME WINNER OF THE ANNUAL EKURHULENI AWARDS: BEST PRINT MEDIA

TIMEStameBOKSBURG - BENONI

“The discussion around freight, and positioning and aligning it more optimally, productively as a generator of economic value, needs an ongoing deeper discussion,” says Dr Ismail Vadi, MEC for Roads and Transport. MEC Vadi was speaking at the 2014 Freight Summit, which was held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on 20 October.

The 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan for Gauteng forecasts that by 2037, or thereabouts,

the vehicle population of Gauteng is projected to increase from 3,5 million to 6,5 million. Consequently, Gauteng road-users during morning peak hours could increase from the current 2.2 million to 3.8 million by 2037.

It is with this reality in mind that Vadi addressed participants at the summit.

According to Vadi, Gauteng’s freight plan (how goods are transported, imported and exported) needs a strong supporting road network in order for the economy to prosper in spite of the increasing motorist population and product transport demands. “An efficient transportation system is a critical element for sustainable economic development.

The present high level of congestion on large portions of the Gauteng road network is therefore a major cause of

concern. It leads to a loss in productivity owing to longer travel times and increased fuel consumption,” Vadi said.

Apart from the influence of freight on the province’s economy, the safety of motorists on the roads is another crucial factor that was discussed at the summit. Vadi referred to the tragic horror crash on the N12 Voortrekker Road in Alberton recently, where a truck plunged into 48 vehicles and killed four people.

Barely three days later there was another crash on the N12 involving two trucks. According to Vadi, the Department is determined to create safer roads.

However, due to the impact of freight on our economy, the intervention cannot be one-sided. Overloading of freight vehicles is another issue that the Department aims to curb. Many drivers avoid strategies of law enforcement, such as weigh bridges,

and take alternative routes. Vadi calls on the freight sector to stick to the Keep Left Pass Right rule; to comply with the speed limit and to adhere to load restrictions, as negligence on the road, in the end, impacts our economy negatively.

One way in which the Department aims to create safer and more efficient freight transportation, is via the development of the Durban-Gauteng freight corridor by 2030, which should alleviate freight congestion on public roads.

This month Eskom, the Ekurhuleni Municipality and the EMPD have partnered to eliminate illegal connections in the Gauteng area. The fi rst area targeted was Tsakane Extension 10.

“The removals started at 8:00 and we were done by 11:30. 100% of illegal connections were removed in that section. We promise to do a follow-up and see if they have not reconnected themselves again in the future,” said Nkuli Nzimande from Communications at Eskom. Earlier this year Eskom launched its Save a Future Leader campaign, which was introduced with the aim of protecting children in rural areas from dangerous illegal connections. The Tsakane project formed part of the implementation process of this campaign, and it is the fi rst physical step towards eradicating illegal connections.

According to Nzimande, “The danger of these illegal connections is that little children may be hurt or killed, and many have been in different areas, so we trying our best to eliminate this problem. This partnership will continue until there are no illegal connections. We plead with the communities throughout Gauteng to please report even when they suspect that there are illegal connections, we will come and we will remove,” Nzimande advised. Eskom, the Ekurhuleni Municipality and the EMPD will visit neighbouring areas in Gauteng soon to look for further illegal connections.

Total devastation is an euphemism when you hear that your loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer. Your initial reaction of shock will soon turn into a feeling of helplessness. What, where, who and when?

A “rollercoaster ride” of highs and lows, anger, acceptance, fear and anxiety will begin. The situation will also force you to look at your own fears about illness, weakness and death.

Involving the childrenIf the diagnosed person has young children, adults should:* Be open and honest about the situation* Remember that their anchor in life is under threat, so they should not be kept in the dark* Encourage children to talk about their feelings and to ask questions* Explain anything that changes their daily routine* Inform their teachers about the situation* Depend on them to some degree, because they want to be a source of support* Encourage physical affection for the sick person

Some Dos and Don’ts for family members to consider:

Do:

• Take your cues from the person diagnosed with cancer• Let them know you care• Respect their decisions* Include the person in your usual plans and events• Listen without always feeling you have to respond• Expect good and bad days• Keep the relationship as normal and balanced as possible

Don’t:

• Offer advice they did not ask for• Be afraid to talk about the illness• Always feel you have to talk about cancer• Be afraid to hug and touch• Be patronising by asking questions like, “How sick are you today?”• Make statements like, “I can imagine how you must feel.”• Treat them differently• Avoid statements like, “You are brave” or “You are strong,” since it puts pressure on them.

Carnival City is proud to present one of the newest, brightest stars in the South African music industry – SAMA Award-winning songstress Naima Kay – as part of its highly anticipated Reconciliation Day concert, In the Company Of, taking place at the Big Top Arena on 15 December 2014.

The exceptionally talented, fast-rising young performer joins a star-studded line-up of artists for the show, including Freshly Ground, Bhudaza, and Wanda Baloyi. “We are excited to host this emerging young star on our stage for the first time. Although she has only been performing for a short time, she is making spectacular strides and winning hearts across the country. Carnival City is ever committed to giving local talent a platform to shine, and we are looking forward to Naima lighting up our stage,” says Jaco Saaiman, the Entertainment Manager at Carnival City. The Port Shepstone born beauty has always believed that she would one day make a career out of music. Music has always surrounded her and she has a fond appreciation for Miriam Makeba, Dorothy Masuka and Mama uBusi Mhlongo. But it was only after she had spent two years working at the Post Office that she was discovered by Touch Africa Records’ Mdu Ngcobo while performing at the Ugu Jazz festival in Port Shepstone. He spotted her talent immediately and proposed a record deal to her. The 23-year-old singer, born Lungile Khumalo, jumped at the opportunity and took on her stage name Naima Kay. Midway

through 2013, she released her first album to wide acclaim, and then went on to win the 2014 South African Music Award (Sama) for Best Newcomer.Kay’s first album, Umsebenzi, is clearly rooted in her Christian beliefs, but it is also a hip and fresh interpretation of Afro-pop. Her tunes have been remixed by the likes of Heavy K to create a more urban dance sound, but the messages in her songs remain the strongest element.

Tickets to the concert are available through Computicket. The ticket prices range from R230 to R400. For more information visit www.suninternational.com or phone 011 898 7000.

SAPS members from the Vereeniging Flying Squad arrested fi ve suspects after being called to the scene of an armed robbery in the early hours of Sunday 19 October.

They arrived at the corner of Fourteenth Avenue and Cason Roads in Boksburg North shortly before 02:00 to fi nd a silver Renault with fi ve occupants. One of them pointed a fi rearm at the offi cers and, while they were trying to apprehend him, he was wounded in the lower body.

All fi ve suspects were arrested and a licensed fi rearm was recovered. The wounded suspect was taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital for treatment.

On Wednesday 15 October at around 15:30, a motorist from Buhle Park was shot dead on the N17 westbound near the Alberton bridge.

The driver was in his Nissan LDV with a passenger when he picked up two men near the Alberton bridge. The hitch-hikers allegedly shot the driver in the forehead, fatally wounding him, but left the passenger unharmed.

Apparently in an attempt to speed away, the driver crashed the vehicle into the freeway barriers. The two suspects fl ed the scene and are still at large.

It is suspected that the perpetrators came from the nearby informal settlement, as there is a footpath from it to the N17 freeway. The passenger informed the police that the two men hitch-hikers had claimed they were on their way to Johannesburg.

Motorists are warned to be vigilant if their vehicles break down in and around that location. Additionally, motorists are reminded that stopping on the freeway is an offence and very dangerous, unless such action is beyond the driver’s control.

Police recently arrested a Zimbabwean national for selling dagga in the area around the Hyperama and McDonalds near Rondebult Road in Boksburg.

After observing the man meeting several people and exchanging items with them, EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit members approached him and found him to be in possession of drugs. They confi scated 34

small packets of dagga rolled in foil paper and valued at around R350.

The 35-year-old man was charged with possessing and dealing in dagga at Boksburg Central Police Station and is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

The hunt is still on for two suspected hitmen who ditched a fi rearm at Windmill Park taxi rank on Thursday 16 October.

While on an early morning patrol around the volati le Windmill Park Taxi Rank, EMPD Public Order Policing members noti ced two suspicious-looking men in denims and duster coats. When the Metro Police offi cers made a U-turn to approach them, the two men showed the police a clean pair of heels and in the process dropped a 9mm compact pistol.

The recovered fi rearm has been booked in at Dawn Park Police Stati on.

Several concrete leads are being followed by the police in an eff ort to apprehend the two suspects.

Police are looking for witnesses to a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on Pretoria Road south near the ERPM Golf-Course in Boksburg West on 7 October at about 15:05.

A motor vehicle collided with a tree and the driver sustained fatal injuries. There was a bystander on the scene who left before the attending Metro Police Offi cer could record his particulars.

Any person who witnessed the incident should please contact the investigating offi cer, Warrant Offi cer Manie du Preez, on 011 306 0000 using reference: Boksburg North CAS 128/10/2014.

Two men who were found in a suspected stolen vehicle with cellphones, Indonesian currency and a handbag were recently arrested while trying to fl ee.

Freeway offi cers on routine patrol along the R24 eastbound just after the Barbara Road turnoff noticed a suspicious-looking white Nissan Navara with three occupants at around 06h45 on Monday 13 October. When they approached the vehicle, the Navara screeched to a halt and three men jumped out and bolted on foot. Two of the men were apprehended and one managed to evade arrest.

The two suspects failed to convince the offi cers of their ownership of the vehicle and could not provide satisfactory answers about a woman’s handbag containing R400 cash, as well as Indonesian currency estimated to be worth R20 000 in rands. Four cellphones were also found in the vehicle.

The duo, both in their late twenties and residents of Hillbrow, were charged at Bedfordview Police Station with being in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, possession of huge amounts of foreign

currency, as well as a lady’s handbag with cash. They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 14 October.

CONFISCATED & ARRESTED : the Nissan Navara and the two suspects

Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot in the Zaya section of Vosloorus on Sunday 26 October.

The soccer player was tragically declared dead upon his arrival at hospital. Seven people were reportedly in the house of Senzo Meyiwa’s girlfriend Kelly Khumalo at around 20:00 when two suspects entered the house while another waited outside. During an exchange in which robbers ordered Meyiwa to give them his phone, he was shot and killed.

All three suspects fl ed the scene. The police have offered a R150 000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza said: “This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it - for Senzo’s family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and for the nation.”

You are stressed, panicked and fi lled with anxiety about the Matric exams, and you are not even writing them - your child is.

Seeing your child stressed and fearful is daunting, even for the strongest among us. As parents we need to remember that if we are happy and stress-free, our children will be happy and stress-free. During the Matric exams, your job as a parent is to achieve a balance between being too anxious and too relaxed. Therefore, your child’s stress and your own stress should be m anaged in a healthy way. Achieving this will help your child to learn and concentrate at an optimal level.

10 tips for Mom to ease the process:1. Remember that although

Matric exams are important, your child’s whole life does not depend on them, although it may feel like it at the time.

2. Listen to your child’s concerns and reassure him or her. Tell your child that you believe in his or her capability.

3. Be patient and understanding by showing him or her as much support as possible.

4. Make sure that “brain food” like fresh fruit is readily available. Try to limit the intake of coffee and sugar.

5. Encourage your child to take regular breaks and to occupy these breaks with some form of exercise: for example, taking the dog for a walk.

6. Provide him or her with practical support: for example, silence and a private place to study.

7. Encourage your Matric to get enough sleep in order for the brain to be able to function optimally.

8. Reduce daily pressures by, for example, reducing daily chores in and around the house.

9. Encourage positive thinking. Make your child believe “I can.”

10. Remember to celebrate the results.

As a parent you should be involved, but not too involved. You should set limits, but allow freedom. Encourage excellence, but do not expect perfection.

He timed his second shot perfectly and fi nished 20 metres before the green, while Duminy overshot the pin.The Ekurhuleni junior chipped to six feet and drained the birdie putt for victory. This past Saturday the Lions and Western Province competed for the 2014 Absa Currie Cup at Newlands. It was a nail-biting match, but in the end WP edged past the Lions to claim a 19-16 victory.

By half-time WP was already leading 13-0, which did not predict victory for the visitors. However, the Lions fought back hard during the second half. The team scored their first

penalty kick only five minutes into the second half. A try and a second penalty kick followed shortly afterwards and tied the two teams at 13-13. The Lions were relentless, but poor kicking ultimately led to the team’s demise. After WP inside centre Jaco Taute planted the first try of the match, WP was set on winning the Cup. WP has always been a strong contender for the Currie Cup: from 1982 to

1986 WP has won the Cup every year. The team last won the Currie Cup in 2012 and was set on claiming it again this year. The Lions last won this title in 2011. WP flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis was named Man of the Match for his exceptional goal-kicking, which gave the champions the edge on the scoreboard. It was a close match, but a well-deserved victory for WP. This year is the 33rd time that WP has won the Absa Currie Cup title.
